Western Sizzlin had multiple locations and was a NC favorite back in the 1970s - 80's. I don't think there are too many locations still in business, and I was surprised to see this one in Goldsboro. I was there for Saturday lunch. I went with their lunch special - 6 oz steak with choice of sides, trip to the food bar, drink, and dessert. Special price for the meal was $9.99 I made a salad from that part of the food bar. Not a huge variety of options, but all of the basics were there. The steak was quickly available. We got to the restaurant on a busy Sunday, granted. We let the administration know we had a party of six, as instructed. Our party included an older person who had a serious physical impairment. We went to find a table so she could sit down, being in pain. A person snapped at her saying that you can't save tables. We responded that we are party was walking to the table as we were literally the next party coming through the line. We were sent away to wait on another table. Seems she was saving the table for someone behind us in line. That made no sense to us. Such rudeness to those with limited physical abilities is horrendous!! The old standards like Golden Corral, Ryan's and others have either turned into pig troughs or were just out of business....where new lows in table manners are broken on a regular basis. All I wanted was a steak, potato and large salad bar. Walked in and was greeted by an inviting atmosphere and did the tray line while noticing example displays were fresh. All repeat, All staff was courteous and willing to make our visit pleasant. There were no fountains of chocolate enticing errant children to stick their faces in the flow, there was no loud din to try to outtalk and I felt proud to eat among our nations finest.... the men and women of the United States Air Force and their families from Seymour Johnson AFB. Full disclosure- I only purchased a buffet and did not try the steak. However, the buffet was very limited. They had four soup choices - but you only get a bowl of you buy that separately. No potatoes unless you buy a dinner .. only ice cream and very bad pudding as dessert choices ... no yeast rolls - what kind of a steakhouse doesn't have yeast rolls? The fried chick was good according to my husband but the rotisserie chicken was hard and flavorless. The salad bar was decent as long as you skip the tuna or chicken salad and the dressing choices. Only one 8 ft section of the bar had actual food choices for people who purchased the buffet... very limited choices... chicken, rice, beef tips and veggies -wait ...there was an unappealing spaghetti option at the front with some dried bread -maybe garlic bread strips... near the soup with no bowls. I visited this resteraunt at 08:26 pm and placed an order. When I placed my order, I specifically asked the young lady at the register for my toast to be buttered and toasted on both sides well done. She replied to me by saying "Sir the toast already comes toasted on both sides." Being that I realized she did not understand my request, I politely without any spite asked "Can I have it Buttered and toasted on both sides". She then said "Oh sure, you can just let your waiter know and they will put in the request". Fair enough, I walked to my table. I informed my waiter of my request and explained that I did not feel the young lady understood what I was asking for at the register. He replied by saying, "I'll put it in for you." When I received my order...needless to say my toast was barely toasted at all..but my food was hot. I waited several minutes for a request that I put in at the initial time of my visit standing in line to pay. By the time I received my bread with my dinner, the rest of my food was Luke warm enough to eat. Due to a prior encounter with the management at this specific location and the resteraunt being busy on this night..I decided to just eat the dinner "as it was given to me" and call it a night. Judging by the mid '90's awards on their wall, this place was the bee's knee's a few decades ago. This is supposedly one of the last Western Sizzlin's left that is operational. While this was my first time at a Sizzlin, it reminds me a lot of Ponderosa (which I've been to many times in my youth). You walk in and immediately get in line to order your entree. We ordered dinner and ordered a steak for my son and the salad bar for my daughter and myself. This was the first time there for us, so when the waitress gave us three salad plates, I figured the steak dinner came with a salad. My kids went to get their salad, and I looked at the receipt cause I thought it was a little pricey. They charged me for three full salad bars. When the waitress came by, I told her that we didn't order a salad for my son and he doesn't want it. She apologized for the mistake. I told her that the manager needs to talk to the cashier not to assume that everyone wants to have a salad. She went to get the manager so I could talk to her. The waitress came back without the manager and told me that the manager says it happens and to make sure that I say to the cashier next time that I don't want the salad. I also wasn't going to get my money back for the salad because he already went to the salad bar. He didn't eat it, but the manager couldn't even bother to come over to talk to me so she wouldn't know that. I would have paid for a side salad even though I have a tight budget right now. What can I say? Western Sizzlin offers the best deal in town if you're hungry for a steak but don't want to spend a bunch of money and don't care about fancy surroundings. They had a special going on...an 11oz sirloin, side (like baked potato, French fries, etc.) and Texas toast for less than $11. All four of us ordered this special. We were all very happy with our meals. My steak was prepared perfectly and was very tender. It wasn't overly seasoned but had a nice flavor. Didn't get the buffet (you can get that on its own for around $9 or as an add-on to your meal for around $4), but it looked very good! I might get that next time! There's a huge salad bar and choices like fried chicken and various vegetables. Even if you don't get the buffet, you can use the potato bar to load up your baked potato (if you choose a baked potato as your side) with cheese, butter, sour cream, bacon bits, chives, etc. Bread pudding and ice cream are also available off the buffet as a part of your meal. Anyhow, this past Saturday they had a 16oz. steak for 13.49........YES, THIRTEEN DOLLARS AND 49 CENTS, not Italian lira or Deutsch marks.....and it was delicious! I am a steak snob and gargle one regularly, and this one was a shame to eat, and the baked potato was excellent as well. This used to be one of my favorite places to get a steak. Angie and I went in there tonight. She ordered the BBQ Chicken Tips and I got a ribeye medium rare and a salad. Angie says hers was really good. My first steak came out almost grey on the outside and it was really pink but I tried it anyways. It was actually cold in the center. Our server took it back and when the second one came it was STILL grey on the outside with bloody juice on top of one end of it. I took a bite of it as well and it was just terrible and very chewy. I told our server to just bring me a box please and I would take it home and finish cooking it on the grill. She said just let me get your money back and I said that would be fine. She wanted to show the steak to the manager. She came back with my money and they charged me almost $9.00 for my salad I had made and charged me for The Whole Thing. I said I think you got my ticket confused I did not order The Whole Thing which is their buffet and salad bar. She said the manager said they were charging me that because I "could" have went back to the buffet and gotten what I wanted. I said I don't want nothing off of it. So all in all I paid $9.00 for a salad with lettuce cheese ham and eggs and Thousand Island. Only 1 salad Only 1 trip. Our server was FANTASTIC but the quality of my steak was absolutely TERRIBLE. Worst steak I have ever been served in my life. Paid almost $ 17.00 for it because I wanted a good steak and asked for the most tender one they would have. (I have trouble chewing) I ordered the steak Med rare. The outside was burnt, and the inside was well done. I could not cut the steak with my knife. It was completely hard as shoe leather. Went there New Years Eve place was half empty so no excuse for poor service and bad food but we got both. I ordered a thick top sirloin steak medium along with the salad bar. The steak came to the table almost burnt on the outside and rare on the inside. I sent it back and when it came back it was still rare. The waitress said you want me to take it back again. I told her No way it was almost black on the outside she said I will make him make you a new steak and he can butterfly it. I said no way if I wanted a thin dry steak I would have ordered a think steak. I told her just refund for my steak because my friend was almost done eating his steak that was also rare when he ordered medium. I can not choke down a bloody steak. The salad bar had brown limp lettuce and everything on it all tasted the same stale and old. I will not go back.
