We've been coming here for about 10 years and we have always been satisfied with the pet care and service. The staff have always been very professional and friendly, and the upgraded facility is really nice. I would like to give special kudos to Dr. Rikes. She recently detected a mass in our senior cat's abdomen which another vet office overlooked. It was later discovered to be terminal cancer and we had to make the hard decision to lay him to rest. It was our very first time and we were heartbroken, but Dr. Rikes was extremely gentle and made the overall experience very comforting. Though I am still mourning the passing of my pet, I feel very much at peace and grateful that Dr. Rikes was the one to be with us. Thank you! read more

I can't believe it's taken me this long to write a review for WV. They've been our primary vet since 2010. Started out with our English bulldog, Bernice. We'd adopted her from a rescue and, as is common for EB's, she was a fabulous, adorable girl who loved everyone and everyone loved her... and a walking pre-existing condition. The EB community has two go-to vets in So Cal. Neither one is even remotely close to us. We were warned that taking her to any vet other than the two everyone goes to will wind up costing you a fortune because when a vet sees an EB, they see serious $$$. And that was true with the first vet we took her to. Good vet but we were never able to walk out of there without incurring a bill under $300. A high school friend recommended Dr. Mike at Western Veterinary, back when they were at their old location on PCH. Said he and his girlfriend took all their animals there and that you couldn't ask for a better veterinarian. So, we took a chance - and it was a chance well taken! Not only is Dr. Mike amazing but his entire staff is, too. Every vet who has joined the WV team over the years - and we've seen most of them because my husband and I have dogs and cats of our own but are also very involved in animal rescue and I run a cat rescue group - have been top notch and nothing short of amazing. We've been there so often over the years that we joke that we should probably have our own personalized parking space. Over the years our dogs have undergone stone removal surgery, corneal debridement, corneal grafting, bilateral entropion surgery, treatment for mange for a newly rescued bulldog, bladder flushing, treatment for UTIs, hernia repair, major dental work and tooth removals - some of the procedures new and innovative - all at a fraction of the cost that specialists and other vets would have charged - and done with superior expertise. For our cats - both personal and rescue - they've treated toe injuries, feline urinary obstructions, feeding tube insertion for a kitty who's original owner died and she decided to go on a hunger strike, repair of a distal femur knob fracture for a 5 week old kitten, eye removal and sealing for a 2 month old kitten who suffered head trauma, an experimental perineal urethrostomy surgery for our 13 year old cat, Spy, who, after two stays in the hospital for catheterization and flushing for urinary blockage, needed this surgery or he would die. The vets at WV - in particular Dr. Kim (who is, sadly, no longer there because she decided she was going to go into dentistry instead) and Dr. Eileen - are not afraid to try new things and expand their skill set if there's a procedure required that they've not done or not done regularly. And every single time they have, the results have been amazingly successful. We usually ask for Dr. Eileen because she's our favorite, but all the vets there are amazing. We just think she's the MOST amazing and love her dearly. Oh, and yes, they do spays and neuters, snap testing, vaccines and offer treatments for URIs and other common issues. Running a rescue group, I see a lot of invoices from vets in just about every county in So Cal as our foster parents are located in every county here. I know the range of cost for certain basic procedures to major surgical procedures for various issues and medical emergencies. WV's prices are great! Granted, they do give us fabulous discounts because my husband and I are longtime clients but, still, even without that, their prices are fair and you'd be hard pressed to beat their skill and expertise as well as their care and compassion. I cannot recommend them enough. Everyone I have recommended them to over the years - just as our friend recommended to us so many years ago - has loved them and become lifelong clients, too. Unless we move out of state, for as long as WV is in business, we will always take our fur kids and rescue kids there. Can't imagine ever going anywhere else! read more

Have an older dog adopted from the local shelter and took her here for her checkup. Lucy, my fur baby received excellent care from the veterinarian. The office staff and the techs were also really efficient, professional and pleasant. We had the sad task of euthanising our pet of 14 + years and totally at random picked these people. My feather baby was not feeling well on Wednesday morning and I was so anxiously calling around to find him an appt. All the avian vets are so overwhelmed with the patient volume due to Covid. The front desk staff was so sweet and told me they would try their best to get me in. A couple hours later, I received a call from a lady, I was too panic to even ask for her name. She checked up on how my bird was doing. After she heard the birdie got a little better and started to eat again, I can tell she felt relieved as I was. She told me to keep an eye and also gave some advise on bird diet. There was no charge on the call, no suggested tests, or no any kind of sales. I truly believe she called because she cares and she has passion for what she does. I was able to get my bird in with a different great vet. But I felt like I owe a big thank you to Western Ver group. So I called again 2 days later to check on her name, Kristin told me I probably talked to Dr Gilman. My dog got injured and I called this vet for help because I took her there multiple times before. She was shaking because of pains. The front desk lady immediately declined my request because no appointment available per her. I was willing to wait and asked for the emergency care with extra fee - she declined instantly because only one vet working at night. I used to go here with our dogs so I am familiar with the facility and now remember why we left....I cannot tell you disappointed and frustrated that I am with them....I called in regards to a stray cat that has an open abyss on its side....They told me they could not get me in until Monday.....When I conveyed to them I was not sure the cat would make it that long as it is oozing puss and has an open wound.....The response well not sure what to tell you.....I believe that ALL vets should take an interest in helping out the strays of the world and their staff should be more helpful and caring....The gal I spoke with could care less and I am just appalled..... read more

We've been going to WV since we first got our dog at 10 months old. She's a senior now but doing well; because she's a senior, we make sure to get a yearly checkup. The vet today spent a lot of time checking her, and asking me questions. I was impressed. We have gone to other vets (when we couldn't get into WV). Other vets spent no more than 5 minutes looking her over, and then charge $100 checkup fee. So I find, WV is still a very great veterinarian to use for your pups. read more

WVG has friendly veterinarians. The front desk is another story. Their facility is nice and clean. I like it and I am happy with the care they provide. However, I feel like they always try to upsell me by offering services or treatments that my dog doesn't necessarily need. For instance, I brought my puppy in because his tummy was making weird noises; they diagnosed him with Pancreatitis, something that is common in puppies because they tend to eat every little thing. They gave him a shot while we were in the office and also prescribed two different medicines for him to take at home over the course of one week. I went with their recommendation on all treatment. Later I looked up exactly what type of medicine they prescribed and found that the shot they gave him was simply the liquid version of the pills that they prescribed....definitely unnecessary! They also suggested that I put my puppy on a bland diet for the next 7days and suggested that I use their dog food during this time. Because you can only purchase the suggested food at WVG, I decided to go with the traditional bland diet: rice and chicken. During this visit they also told me that they noticed that he has retained K9s and suggested that I get them pulled when I brought him in to be neutered. I ignored this advice because he was 6 months at the time, and sure enough, a set of those retained k9s fell out a month later all on their own. Again, I like the level of care that they provide and I am happy with them. They are not pushy when they offer services so I just suggest that you do your research before agreeing to any treatment to make sure it is absolutely necessary. Also, they offer pet insurance, which I think helps big time. read more

It was always felt like a family atmosphere in the past but now my sense is that it is strictly a "business". Paid a few thousand to have a major knee surgery done to my dog (TPLO) done on BOTH of my dogs knees. They must not have a sterile environment for surgeries because 4 years later they are flaming infected and needed to BOTH be removed. Found out they used a proto type plate that can't be removed with out a specialists tools. This office was not properly set up to do surgeries, they didnt have a surgeon even on staff, they out source and have a surgeon flown in. This veterinary office costed me an extra 5000$ and put my dog through ALOT of stitches and pain.. They also used my dogs blood for a transfusion to another dog with out my permission, not happy about that either. Don't take your chances here, it's a real roll of the dice , go to a real veterinarian. read more

We had been taking our dog here for 5 years with out any problems. They were always kind, welcoming and gentle with him. But all it takes is one incident to ruin it. We knew something was not right and brought him in to get checked. Within 2 weeks we had been there 3 times and were told the same thing. He is over weight and probably has arthritis. Each time we were sent home with a new pain medication. On our third visit we were finally able to get x-rays done and found out there was more going on then him just being over weight. It was suggested an ultra sound be done, which we had to do at a hospital in lawndale since the earliest appointment here was not until the end of the month. The ultra sound was done and WVG was suppose to contact me with the next step. After 3 days I finally got a hold of them to find out the my dog had a tumor and needed a biopsy. And since there was no availability we went back to the hospital. Our dog ended up passing at home not even a week later. With all the calls we had made before this unfortunate incident, WVG did not show any concern or urgency in helping us to get him better. They only pushed us off to another facility. I understand times right now are difficult, but when a worried pet owner comes to you telling you something is not right more should be done then just saying your dog needs to lose weight. I am not one to post bad reviews, and unfortunately it was one horrible incident that led to this one. Should we decide to get another pet in the future, we will not be coming back here. read more

Finally had the courage of returning after the loss of the beloved Dr Mike. I had the good fortune of knowing Dr Mike over 3 years since I relocated to the South Bay from the Valley. Dr Mike took such great care of my sweet Lenny to the end and welcomed our new fur baby, Walty. I still remember Dr Mike's words, "Ryan, you will rarely see me, this is a handsome, healthy pup". Words can't describe how much I miss that kind, unique, amazing soul. He had the magic gift on making every customer feel like family. In the words of so many, he is and was irreplaceable Out of respect for Dr Mike and his family, I returned some 5 months post his passing. It was hard for me and I think of him so often. Sadly the warmth, compassion, and family type atmosphere has changed. From the staff on the phone, to the tech, to the assigned vet, the whole experience was just simply cold and almost scripted. Sure, with the passing of the legendary Dr Mike, I knew things would not be the same, but I expected that extra effort, extra smile. It was just plain empty and cold. Here's a first, even before my pup was tested and worked up, I am sternly asked to review the suggested charges and sign away in consent. Surely I understand the process, but the class and scope of the "way" that Dr Mike made that happen is simply gone. Did they do their job, yes, no doubt. But whose to say, 100 other local vets are not as competent. What separates the true Western Vet experience is the customer service and feeling of being a member of the family. That's what Dr Mike excelled at. Surely he was a great vet, but he was an even better human being and he knew the importance of keeping customers happy and calm, no matter the storm that lies ahead for their beloved pet. Ok, maybe I have sour grapes that no one replaces, Mike. Not many professionals exude that skill set. I strive too, everyday in my practice. I'm just disappointed that those behind the scenes either have not worked hard enough at least half way to meet those high standards or endeavored to achieve them. Will I return, probably so. Though only for Dr Mike's sake and his legacy. Was I expecting more, no doubt. I hope this review allows the staff to reflect on it's reputation. It's just not competent work. It's compassion, its warmth, it's making your customer feel safe. Those qualities are just not there. In life, nothing remains the same. I just hope that they realize the lofty standards the Dr Mike has set. I truly pray for the peace, happiness and good fortune for Dr Mike's wife and kids. I can't fathom the loss, I was just a client and I am devastated. Dr Mike you embodied everything that a true professional exemplifies. Western Vet is our go to vet. They have provided excellent care for our dog for the past four years. Their staff is patient and caring. You can tell that they are passionate about what they do. This vet is the BEST!!! I would recommend anyone to them and will continue to! My pug suffered a severe injury to his front leg. After taking him to a vet near my home (Huntington Beach) and being treated poorly and basically being told that my dog had kidney failure and to put him to sleep because I couldn't pay the thousands of dollars upfront to do the reconstructive leg surgery, I had called around to MANY other vets and was turned down by all. Like most pet owners my dog is my family and couldn't even fathom putting him to sleep or giving him up to an adoption service that would perform the surgery at the cost of me giving up my dog. My moms friend had referred me to Dr. Mike and his WONDERFUL staff! From the very first phone call I felt welcomed and relieved of stress and sadness. I took my pug to his office and they performed the surgery and took such good care of Hue, my pug! Dr. Mike and his staff actually care for animals and not just trying to make a quick buck of of you. They took the time to follow up on Hue after the surgery with emails and calls and anytime I called or had questions they were with there with no hesitation. I live in Huntington Beach and will gladly make the drive to Hues new vet because the service and staff is SO great! Every time Hue goes to this office he is literally pulling me to the door....that just goes to show you how great their staff is when your animal is not afraid of going to the vet. **UPDATE** This review is after Dr. Mike's passing. ***** My dog has been coming here for 10 years, as well as her puppies. We recently rescued a dog and called to make an appointment. I clearly said that we have a certificate from SPCALA for the second exam, and the receptionist said that that was fine. Came in on a Saturday afternoon for his appointment and the receptionists on staff said they do not accept these vouchers. I stated that the person I made the appointment with cleared it. They went on to say they don't have anyone on staff to confirm this, so they called the director Jennie Cruz to inquire. The receptionist then hands her cell phone to me and the director repeatedly said that "we don't offer free exams" and "the person you spoke to has been with us for years and knows the policy so I don't know where the miscommunication came from..." - alluding to the fact that I had tried to scam them into giving me a free exam. I explained to her I've been coming here for a decade to show that we've been loyal patients, and she went on to lecture that the miscommunication shouldn't have come from her staff's end. She offered no help, no support and continued to condescend me on the phone until I felt I had to end the conversation before getting upset. We will now have no option other than to remove our senior pup from their patient list because if they show this little care for the people that are loyal customers, absolutely zero care for shelter animals (judging by her tone when the director said "we offer no free services to shelter or rescue animals", I can't imagine them giving any care at all to my senior pup or any dog. Which is very unfortunate seeing as she could have established a fulfilling, wonderful relationship with a vet from the beginning. Don't go here if you love your animal. read more

Had our first appointment at WVG yesterday and have nothing but wonderful things to say. The facility truly did feel spacious and clean like many of the reviews have also mentioned and everyone has been very friendly and welcoming. The parking at WVC has also been the easiest out of all the vet clinics I had been to. We came to continue care with the wonderful Dr Pang whom has been my dogs' primary vet for many years starting from before COVID times with my first dog who sadly passed away this passed August. I'm so happy to have made the move so my current two dogs can continue to receive the outstanding care she provides. It was especially such a breath of fresh air to be let inside an exam room again and able to discuss my dogs' care in person after 3+ years of appointments being over the phone. Totally worth the 16 miles drive to WVG! We'll be back in a few months when my younger dog needs updated vaccines but hopefully not before then! read more

I cannot say that I recommend this Vet Group anymore. I used to be a big fan but it has started to go downhill fast. They seemed overwhelmed here and unorganized. Dr Mike's legacy, I pray they they get it together here. They used to be very on top of things and the level of care was good but now it's really subpar. I will refrain from specific names and details but the follow-ups here are non existent and some of the techs handle dogs in extremely rough ways. They dont have anyone on staff here in the evenings so if your dog has to stay the night post surgery, they will be left alone unmonitored all night. Switched vets and am much happier. I can't believe I have finally found a vet that I love!! It took me 9 years. I went from one veterinarian to the next never feeling completely satisfied. I always felt I was either getting ripped off or my dogs weren't being diagnosed/treated correctly. This place forever has my business and my referrals. Dr. Mike is FANTASTIC! He spent great time with me discussing options and his thoughts. He wasn't gauging me with pricing. He was fair in pricing and gave me options. Because his pricing was fair I was finally able to afford a X-ray and office visit to learn if our dog was dealing with someone major (heart, lungs). Dr. Mike called me 3 times to follow up. Wow!!! And not to mention his office is BEAUTIFUL and CLEAN! Complimentary coffee & cookies for the customers. Beautiful restrooms for the clients to use and gorgeous fresh flowers at the front desk. Yummy hard candies at sign in were also another nice touch. I must say all these "extras" for their customers and their beautiful facility concerned me. I was concerned I'd see it in our bill. Not at all! He takes care of his clients (animals) and their owners. I hope this second location flourishes for him. He is sure deserving. Can't say enough great things! Just so happy I found him!!! Many years ago I adopt a cat for the one of the local rescues here in the South Bay. He was a tuxedo kitty and his name was Kona. He was a little ball of energy. Always running around, jumping from one thing to the next, launching random sneak attacks, just an all around amazing kitty. Unfortunately however Kona had FIV and as a result he passed away a little over a month after I adopted him. The reason I'm telling you this awful story is because there was one silver lining to the whole thing, and his name was Dr. Mike. He was the doctor that the rescue recommended I go to should there be any issues and I'm thankful for their recommendation. Dr. Mike is one the friendliest and most caring vets I have ever met. When I brought in Kona he immediately set to work to figure out was wrong with him. His work was diligent and thorough. It turned out to be an long road to discovering what was ailing Kona and I was hesitant to have all the diagnostic test run on him because I simply could not afford it. However what Doctor Mike did next, earned my gratitude and business for life. He ran all the necessary test at absolutely no cost to me. He said it didn't matter if I couldn't pay, that treating Kona was more important, and he did everything in his power to save my kitten. Even though Kona died, Dr. Mikes effort and compassion have had a lasting impression on me and I highly recommend him to anyone who wants a vet that truly, truly loves animals. read more

Our cat got lots of dark brown waxy deposits in one of his ear after we came back from vacation. We also found one dead spider and two dead wasps around his sleeping area. I tried to clean the ear, but could only get the ones on the outside, so up we go to the WVG. We used to go to the location in Lomita, but this office is closer. It was fairly new and as clean as the other location with kind and helpful staff at the front counter. Our first time seeing Dr. Higashi. She took our cat in for a very thorough cleaning and told us that it is kind of strange for an indoor cat to have infection like that, but it is only on one ear, so it was not coming from ticks or fleas (we did not tell her about the dead wasps, because we did not think it was relevant at the time) . That was a relief for us, but she did say that she did not like how it looks and wanted to do a follow up visit after treating the ear with medication drops, to make sure that it was not coming from something inside the cat's ear. 10 days later, we called and got Dr. Kim this time. She spent a good 5 minutes looking at both ears and confirmed that everything is fine now and wanted us to stopped the medication. We then told her about the dead wasps and she said that her theory was that most likely the cat was trying to kill the wasps but got stung near the ear or on his paw and then transferred to the ear. She then spent time looking at the cat's teeth and listening to his heart and then reported everything is good. We then casually discussed about our concerns and she made sure that all our questions were answered before letting us go. WVG is our vet of choice and we have nothing but good things to say about their staff and Doctors. PS. this location have Kurig machine. I could not help to pop one in for a fresh brew during my visit ;-) read more

After an atrocious experience at Lomita Pet Hospital, I decided to try out Western Vet. My dog had a skin issue and I didn't trust those weirdos over at Lomita Pet. First of all, they are way more professional than Lomita Pet Hospital. The receptionists at LP are very casual and pretty rude on the phone and in person. At Western Vet, everyone I spoke to over the phone was nice, polite, and professional. Good signs. They also call you before your appointment to give you a courtesy reminder, and are efficient with check-in and check-out. They're ready with paper receipts/print-outs of all the services you received, and all the products you purchased (I had to beg the receptionist at LP to print me a receipt!). I had a great experience with Dr. Kim, even though my pet's treatment was costly and she (my dog) needed multiple trips to treat her issue. I felt confident in the care that she received and it did seem like everyone working here truly cared about animals. This place is AMAZING! We just moved here from colorado and needed to find a vet asap for our welsh corgi. When I called they were able to get me in the same day for an initial visit/consultation with Dr. Kim. Dr. Kim was so sweet with my dog. Instead of doing the exam on the cold metal table, Dr. Kim sat on the floor and cuddled with my dog the entire time!!! It was incredible!! My dog was so happy she even did a few tricks for Dr. Kim and the staff! My dog ended up needing a tooth pulled and they were able to get me in within the week. The day of my dogs dental surgery, Dr. Kim personally called me right before surgery and immediately after to assure me everything went fine! I was extremely impressed that she took the time to personally call me about everything and it eased my mind!
