Nice place to pull up in the boat after a day on Smith Mountain Lake. (They advertise plenty of boat parking, which is not the case!) I had a lobster roll, which was filling and good. The place was packed for live music, so we had to sit in the glaring sun. But good for them to be packed! Server was friendly, but service was really slow. Two cold sandwiches took well over 30 minutes to arrive. Then a 10 min wait to get our bill, then another 10 minutes to get our credit card back. (This was well after the live music had ended, and a lot of people had left.) So, good food if you don't mind waiting for it and waiting after it. read more

Frequent this place a lot during the summer, wings are always great and beer is always cold, I absolutely LOVE the pickle shots and the Bombay Crush slushie, the staff here is amazing and Luke behind the bar never lets you get thirsty. One of the most laid back places I've been to in a long time. Servers are very nice & friendly, drinks are strong, view is stunning and overall a great time. I spent both evenings of my weekend here and they had live music on Saturday. Wings were pretty good too. Most folks arrive by boat. They have a great dock, restrooms were clean and the floating bar was fantastic. There's a parking lot, a dinner cruise leaves from this location too. They made a gin & tonic with club soda. When I said something they replaced it with a gin & water. I didn't say anything more as I didn't want to upset my friends. It's a popular summer drink and if they don't have tonic in the gun, either say so or buy bottles. Then the prices for the same drink ranged from $7 to $11. read more

The food was ok. Nothing to write home about. We waited far longer than other tables to receive our food. This meant our hush puppies were cold. Gross. The peel and eat shrimp were good. That's hard to mess up. The lobster roll was salty and forgettable. Since the hush puppies were cold, we asked for another lobster roll. But, the first one one was salty and lacking lobster flavor. Good thing since the "replacement" took over 25 min to arrive, we just cancelled it and paid the bill. We went on the night of the lighted boat parade. This was advertised weeks in advance. I love spending time on the lake. This marina has limited choices. The store that used to sell snacks and beverages has been on endless renovation. The restaurant is small. This is a place to go for fun and grab a quick bite. The atmosphere is loud and there isn't a lot of room. There are fun photo opps on the property. read more

The atmosphere at this place is great. It's open air on the water. The music is loud and fun. This seems like a dive bar that would be fun to hang out at after corona. I would not recommend getting food here. The thing we enjoyed the most was the Cuban sandwich, but even that was nothing to speak of. The wings were okay. I enjoyed the golden wings more than the chili lime because they were sweet. The pulled pork nachos were slightly smokey and the cheese was beer cheese (I would have loved it with a soft pretzel). The hamburger was 12 dollars, small with toppings that came in a plastic bag with what seemed like Kraft singles. Covid: I wouldn't recommend this establishment if you are trying to follow guidelines. There was virtually no social distancing between parties and no one wore masks. My husband and I visited Portside Grill on a busy Friday night. We really enjoyed the view, the music, and especially the friendly service. We had pork nachos and a burger. Both were good and served soon after we ordered. There is quite a selection of beer, mixed drinks, and frozen concoctions. The bartenders here were working their butts off making sure nobody was empty. There was live music, and since the place is small, it was loud. To us, was a very fun vibe. Easy to come by boat or car. Some of the places on the lake don't have much boat parking, but that is not the case here. It's open air and very casual. read more

This is the best and only bar on the water in Smith Mountain Lake. It is expected to have a wait on the food. This place literally gets packed. You know what you're getting yourself into before you even arrive. It's not like any restaurant on the water. Its THE restaurant. It's the main attraction and all the locals and visitors want to experience it. They have a variety of foods you can order while enjoying the view. We finally got to try Portside and had a great time! We loved the laid back lake bar vibes and the live entertainment was excellent. The view of the lake and the sunset over the trees was an added bonus for our evening out. The pub food wasn't too bad either. We ordered some wings and enjoyed them with their jerk sauce. We also split a shrimp po boy and a lobster roll and both were tasty. The lobster roll was actually two rolls on warm buns with a cold lobster salad, and the po boy was on a grilled panini with cheese and large whole shrimp. The po boy felt like it was missing something but I couldn't quite pinpoint it. I have to mention that the service here was great. They didn't seem understaffed at all and the customers and employees all seemed happy. I saw the bartender making some crazy cocktail out of a Corona and decided to give it a try after my server told me it was a Portside specialty. I don't know what all is in it, but it was actually really good! Portside is a short drive from Mariners Landing and the SML state park, but it would be a pretty decent boat ride. Mariners is at C6 and I believe Portside is somewhere between R18-R22. read more

We visited some family at Smith Mountain Lake this past weekend and they kept talking to us about these amazing "chicken wings". We thought okay, sure, whatever, sounds great. However, we had no idea what we were in for. We headed over to Portside by boat, lashed up our boat, and saundered on down the pier to the outdoor dining area. The restaurant is on the water and ultra casual! (Just what you want when you are in your swimsuit!) Place your order at the bar for a bucket of beers and several orders of wings - then find yourself a seat at the bar or at one of the tables and get ready for goodness. The buckets of beer are icy cold and just what you need when its 90 degrees outside! Then - come - the - chicken - wings! The wings are grilled fresh to order, amazingly seasoned, and then - you douse them in the "secret hot sauce" that's located on every table - and OH - MY - GOD! These are unbelievable. They are piping hot, spicy, juicy, and you cannot stop eating them! If you are ever visiting SML or just love wings - this is a must try! read more

Great lake pub. What it lacks in friendly but discombobulated table service it greatly makes up for with the food and convenient premade frozen drinks. The grilled wings are obviously the star of the show but due to the "wing shortage" there have been some days they are out of wings. Despite my anger at the wing-outage during my last visit I decided to go with the "street chicken." It was sliced, boneless and sauced chicken thigh that was really awesome. Only criticism is that it was really "lonely" in the bowl it came in. I would recommend getting some chips to scoop up with. This place is a gem. read more

This used to by my families favorite place to eat on Smith Mtn Lake. But once the government removed the mask mandate, they seem to have fostered many problems: 1. There is no host anymore 2. There is no "line" to get in, the servers don't help you find a seat. We tried to eat there today and someone said, "the tables are first come first serve" then left immediately. 3. The servers will help people they know get in front of you so they don't have to wait... 4. That's probably just the start of it, I can imagine waiting ages to get your food there on a busy night because they're so disorganized. read more

Nice little spot on the water. Had a group of seven show up and find seating right away. You have to order at the bar. Don't make the mistake of sitting down and waiting for service. You'll be waiting for quite some time! When you place your food order at the bar be sure to order your mixed drinks as well. They have a beer stand by the front entrance but that's a beer only stand. I went for the wild berry sangria. Perfect for a scorching hot day. The food is pretty standard bar fare. No fries though only chips. They do have a glazed doughnut burger that looked ridiculous but was apparently pretty delicious. Don't know that I have that amount of gluttony in me though. The prices weren't terrible and everything else was about what you'd expect. Will definitely be back next time I find myself on the water and in need of a break! read more
