I would not let them take care of a maggot let alone one of my bird babies. The fresh water tanks with frogs in it had dead frogs. No humidity, water bowl or UVB on the chameleons. A couple struggling to shed due to lack of humidity. No UVB on the poor Bearded Dragons. They looked stressed and one had a sore on the top of its nose. Water bowls were way to small for them to soak and one looks very thin. Tortoise enclosure was dirty and small. Torts should not be housed in and see through enclosure. The large bunny's cage was disgusting and way to small for a small bunny let alone a bunny of that size. A lot of the animals are marked not for sale. Store pets!!! I hope they are not breeding them because the way these poor animals are kept would not produce healthy babies. The over all store was dirty, smelled awful and made me sad for the animals. People think they are saving animals from places like this when they buy them but they are making so they can keep the doors open and buy more animals to sell. I was there today and it wasn't busy, but the shipment was being unloaded. I pulled my ticket but no one was calling out numbers. I finally asked a woman for help but she said "I don't work here but I'll let them know". At that point I just left. I've been ignored there for 25 years going back to the old Latham location. One positive experience I had was a few years ago. They had species plant I wanted but there was only a couple left. The salesman informed me that they had some that were yet to be unpacked in the back room. Long story short he was reprimanded for selling plants that weren't yet in the display case (in front of me while I was checking out). That ruined the experience and made me feel I did something wrong. So I guess I never had a positive experience, I just witnessed someone going above and beyond being treated like trash. It's sad to say, but I'm actually happier walking in and not seeing anything I want to buy. The stressful part is seeing something I want and having to jump through hoops to get someone's attention and get service. These fish require different water parameters and have very different temperaments, which creates stress and weakens their immune systems. Stressed fish are far more likely to develop ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, or "white spot disease"), and once one fish is infected, the entire tank is at risk. Unfortunately, stores that mix species like this often deny responsibility and may mislead customers to avoid refunds or replacements. For anyone buying fish from any store that displays mixed species, I strongly recommend quarantining and proactively treating for potential bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections before adding them to your main aquarium. This precaution protects both your tank and your fish.

I don't agree with keeping him in the store (he does get to come out of his cage for a spell when the store closes) but Gene, the owner, believes that the bird, who he rescued 17 years ago, is happier there. Overall the store has a sizable collection of retail items and sells fish, small birds, rodents, and reptiles. They also feature adoptable kittens from SPCA, who are always surrounded by boys and girls and woman, cooing over the cute babies. If I still lived in Ithaca, Pampered Pets wouldn't be my first choice for supplies, but I wouldn't avoid it altogether, either.
