Had our 2013 VW cc towed there because the Triple AAA tow truck driver said he knew a mechanic that would be much cheaper then a dealer. We took the car because the car lost power and was sputtering. I told The mechanic/owner that this was our errand car and I just need it to run and I didn't want to spend a lot of money. He comes back and said he did a diagnostic and it needs a major tune up and will cost $1170! I asked him what was wrong with it and he gave me some long story about how the diagnostic came back with all kinds of problems and they had to trace all the problems. I asked him to name some of the problems. He said I needed 1. Mass Air flow Sensor 2. New Coils 3. New spark plugs 4. Oil change Really? $1170 I let him do the MAss Airflow Sensor replacement for $440 because he was going to charge me $170 for the diagnostic anyway and a MAS airflow sensor costs about $100 so I let him fix it for an extra $170 which was still way too much! MAS airflow sensor literally takes about 10 minutes to replace. Whatever so that means this guy was going to charge me $730 for an oil change, coils and spark plugs!?!!!? I went home and did it myself here's the break down. 5 quarts to synthetic oil from Walmart $21 Oil filter $5 Went to Autozone to scan the vehicle and found out only 2 coils were misfiring. 2 coils from autozone for $80 4 spark plugs for about $50 Total parts roughly $150 Labor: to anyone who doesn't know about cars it takes about 20 mins to change the oil, 5 minutes to pop the coils and change the spark plugs. So less then 30 mins for everything. Steven at Westside Auto was going to charge me $730 for those couple things and pocket $500 for about 30 minutes of work. This guy is dishonest. I just had all 4 rotors refaced on my Jeep Grand Cherokee and my SUV rides like new. Considering that a certain Jeep dealership in Van Nuys that carries the name of a famous basketball player told me that I needed brake pads all the way around and new rotors on the front and that the car was unsafe to drive (Steve told me there was 80% F and 50% R remaining and that the rotors had enough for another brake job in the future), I left very satisfied especially after spending less than 25% of the amount that the rip off dealer quoted! We brought our car in for a clattering sound in the front right wheel well. Steve informed us the shocks had gone out and needed replaced. No surprise; the car isn't new by any means. We picked the car up that evening and were told the shop had checked and corrected the alignment as part of the procedure. That makes sense, right? I mean, they replaced part of the suspension, so an alignment sounds expected. But the good news ends there. Driving home, the car pulled right, which had NOT done before. Holding the steering wheel level with both hands, the car consistently veered to the right. In order to go straight, we had to hold the wheel turned left about five degrees. I returned to the shop the next morning with this complaint and Steve assured me they'd recheck the alignment. But when I picked it up at the end of this second day, there was NO CHANGE whatsoever to the car. He showed me paperwork saying they rechecked the alignment, and explained that they do something to lock the steering wheel in place for the process. I don't know if there is something suddenly wrong with our steering wheel that wasn't wrong before we brought it in (i.e. they broke our car), or if their equipment is faulty. But with him returning it to me in the same obviously faulty condition in which I left it, it's obvious they didn't take the car out and test drive it for themselves. His solution was that I could leave it with him for another day, but what hope do I have that they'll do better the third time around. He didn't demonstrate any sympathy for his shop's failing a customer but was laid back to the point of apathy. It costs me money to stay home from work while they fix my car, and he didn't offer any kind of customer service compensation whatsoever. I would have expected some kind of partial refund for the continued inconvenience of leaving my car with them three times longer than appropriate, but nope! TLDR? The shop did work on our suspension, messed up the alignment, and are either unable or unwilling to fix it in a positive customer-service manner. We're looking for another shop, and I suggest you do too. Edit: Today I discovered that they overtorqued the lug nuts on the wheels so much that one of them twisted off. There's only the sad, short, stub of a broken lug left. The other four lug nuts are there, but I'm not touching them yet. I left a message with Westside but haven't heard back yet (it's Sunday). If I don't hear something favorable from them first thing in the morning, I'm reporting them to the California Bureau of Automotive Repair and AAA, who has them listed as a recommended shop. read more

Highly recommend! A very responsive, knowledgeable and fair place. I went there with my Volvo when it was having a problem that clearly needed a mechanic to diagnose and address. (Obviously, I'm not an expert.) My dealership is more expensive, but I didn't know what to expect here. They took care of me and didn't take advantage of me by trying to upsell or anything like that. I'm obviously not a car expert and someone else might have tried to upsell me when they saw that and was there alone. They're down to earth guys. You're not going to a mechanic for sweet talk. They patiently answered all my questions even when I asked them more than once in clear, short ways I could understand. That's how you get repeat business. I researched a AAA authorized repair shop for a local mechanic. I made an appointment for oil change as it's a minor thing that would be good to check them out. My husband's home recovering from surgery & I didn't want to take more time than necessary, appointment was important to me. When I arrived, I motioned to employee outside where I should park as there's no visible parking lot. He ignored me. Walking in, employee sat to eat and still ignored me. I walked into office & realized I had tried this place 7 years ago when I bought a used Toyota & wanted to check if anything needed repairs. At time, they gave me a long list of "repairs" costing an outrageous sum. I didn't have them do ANY work. I figured since this was years ago, I already had an appointment for oil change, may as well just get it done. I told Steve I'll be walking in the area. Returned after about 40 minutes. Guess what? Car hadn't been touched. Employees are "at lunch" and he can't guess how long it'll take. I said I could have gone to a drive through, Steve just kept making excuses. I demanded my paperwork & key. Tore it up and LEFT. Don't bother here. Will notify AAA when I have time. read more

I was told I needed to get our brakes checked. I called Steve, based on the AAA recommendation. He said no problem and scheduled an appointment with me. We came in the next day (it was a little tricky to figure out where to park the car, but when I asked, several people immediately offered to help). We waited about 40 minutes. Steve gave me his assessment of the situation, said they did not need to be replaced and just to have them checked again in six months or so, refilled the brake fluid, and then charged us NOTHING. Vette lease was ready to come to an end and wouldn't you know it, I needed a brake job. Called the dealer and they wanted over $600.00 just for the pads, no labor! I made a few phone calls to places that specialize in brake jobs, and not one of them would give me an even somewhat firm quote, even with variables thrown in. Come on guys, you do this every day for a living and you cannot figure out parts and labor on a brake job? I looked on the AAA website and found Westside as an approved facility. AAA does a pretty thorough job of investigating who they recommend, I had found a past mechanic through them and was satisfied. I called the shop and talked to Steve. Steve called me back twenty minutes later with a pretty firm quote. Was it the least expensive, probably not. Did it seem fair if he did good work? Absolutely. Do I like walking blindly into an auto mechanic? NO WAY! Off to Westside I went. Hidden on a side street in CP, in an industrial area, I found the shop. Steve was pleasant and quick on getting me checked in and on my way. Calling me the following day (I had dropped off the vehicle late) Steve informed me that not only did I need front brakes, but rears also, AND ROTORS!! I thought, "OH SHIT!" He then told me he would use aftermarket parts that would be acceptable to the leasing company, and quoted me about $900.00 +/-. What was I going to do? Even at $900.00 it seemed like a bargain. Corvettes are 'spensive! They finished that day,,,,,,,,,,,,, and the whole damned thing came to (drum roll please) $720.00! They wanted $600.00 just for the friggin pads at the dealer, for just the front, and he did both sets, with rotors no less,,,,,, FOR $720.00! Later that month, wifeypie's car needed brakes too! Is that stuff contagious? Of course we took the vehicle to Steve. Two brake jobs later and we would return to Westside should we be in need of mechanical services. Westside Automotive came up as being geographically close to where I was going to be viewing the vehicle, and they seem to have a good reputation. I ended up taking two cars to Westside for inspection, and I believe their good reputation is well deserved. They were very thorough and Steve spent quite a lot of time going through the inspection report with me explaining exactly what each item meant and giving me a rough quote to fix each one. I called in advance to make an appointment for approximately 9am for an oil change (to be done while I wait). I show up around 9:30. I'm told that there would be a long wait because they're so busy. I asked if I could get a ride home to wait (they normally have a porter) but was told that they're "in between porters". Maybe they should have told me that when I called the night before. He then said next time I should come in at 7:30am but I remember clearly asking for a 9am appointment. They never mentioned any of these potential roadblocks until it was too late! Bottom line is they must be very good, so good they can afford to lose the occasional customer. Today it was my turn. Judging by the other reviews on this site, I'm guessing I caught Steve on a bad day, and perhaps his staff on a bad day as well. To recap my experience, my car broke down nearby and Westside Automotive was the only AAA affiliated shop around. They fixed my vehicle at a reasonable price, slightly above what I expected, no big deal. My issues started there, though. Upon picking up my car, I noticed that my AC stopped working. A cursory search revealed that it is fairly common for technicians to accidentally cut or disengage the wiring on the AC when replacing the alternator. Fine, I'm not happy, but perhaps we can have a discussion and get it sorted out. So I call the shop to discuss my concerns, and without any accusations, threats, or even allowing annoyance to enter the conversation, Steve informed me that I should just drop by in the morning to take a look. When I explained that I live nowhere near the shop, he was quite rude in his response and that he knew exactly where I lived. I asked if he had any affiliated shops that might work with AAA to get a solution, and he responded with a simple, "Nope." So you likely broke my car, Steve, and you're mad at me for asking you to fix it or at least help me find a place to fix it. Perhaps it was just a bad day. Perhaps they knew I don't live close by and would not be a returning customer and didn't care if I was satisfied. My parents taught me that manners are free. The fact is, if he simply had been polite I likely would not have gone to Yelp for this review for a bad repair. Try not to break down in Canoga Park. read more

Westside checked the front end and found it was only a tire balance that was needed. Major savings for me and much appreciated. Very honest folks which is hard to find these days. I was on a road trip recently with a friend and our five children. After stopping for a lunch break, my minivan wouldn't start. All the electrical functions were still working, so I suspected that it was something more serious than a dead battery. The AAA roadside assistant checked and determined that it was probably a problem with the starter. Since it was 2 p.m. on a Friday afternoon and I was almost 400 miles from home, things were NOT looking good. I was afraid we were going to end up spending the weekend at the Motel 6 in Canoga Park. While the kids and I spent the afternoon at the mall, his crew checked the car, verified that the problem was the starter and replaced it, and sent someone to pick me up when they were finished.
