I've been on the road quite a lot and I can't say I've had the best luck stopping by train stores. They either have just some new inventory and no used inventory at all or they don't carry O gauge. I was more than a little tired, but decided to give Westside a chance rather than going back to the hotel and I am so glad I did. The new owner Tina Marie was just a pleasure to talk to and she clearly is a passionate enthusiast herself. Her current main floor had a great selection including Menards buildings which you'd be out of luck on in this area as the nearest Menards is in Wyoming as of this moment. She offered to let me see the other space that has more estate and used inventory but I had already found everything I was looking for and more in the main section of her shop. If all that wasn't enough, you aren't going to find better pricing, not even on the web. I am really happy I made the drive and I promise you that you will too, so it is worth working this place into your day. The conversation alone was worth the visit. read more

I'm in Vegas for a couple days for work and decided to venture out to Westside trains to check it out based on previous reviews. I'm new to the hobby and my local store in Sacramento is full of grumpy old guys who may or may not be racist or at the very least not friendly. Westside is a cool little shop with tons of gems; Tina the owner is super easy to talk to and answered all my newbie questions and also gave me a ton of great advice. They have a ton of HO stuff and seemed like even more O and N scale as well. I spent almost an hour looking through the shop and the space next door (with a TON of great used stuff) and could've easily spent an hour more looking through stuff and talking to Tina. Pricing was great as well, picked up some accessories and HO rolling stock as well as a magazine for my flight back home. 10/10 would recommend to check out if you're into trains and I will definitely swing by any time in Vegas moving forward. read more

I can't say enough about the customer service here. Tina is so passionate about trains herself and wanting her customers to enjoy their trains. I had a train from the 50s that stopped working, along with some cars that needed some replacement parts, and she painstakingly did the research and put in the time to find parts and repair them. She knows everything about trains themselves and even turned us on to a very rare and valuable experience in Ely, Nevada with the Nevada Northern Railway. This place knows trains like no other and if you have something rare that needs some TLC or you would like to learn something about trains, this is THE place. This is a small business that has an extensive selection of vintage large scale items, as well as HO and N scale items. Their selection of Z scale items is limited and sporadic. I did find a couple of used Marklin HO items here for very good prices. The owner is friendly and provides good service. It's worth checking out! read more

This was my first visit to Westside and I was impressed with the owner's enthusiasm and knowledgeability. Her shop was well-stocked with expansion into a larger area adjacent to the main store. The shop caters to all scales from G to N, with trackage, Woodland scenery products and animated structures by Menards. The owner had that, "if we don't have it, we'll order it," attitude. I believe the owner said there were plans to build interactive displays to encourage customers to enjoy the fun of model railroading. All in all a very enjoyable experience. Thank you. read more

Went to this store in pursuit of my father's new N-scale train hobby. The staff was awesome and, though they had a small selection, they showed us everything they had and made suggestions on our project. We went there specifically for N-scale magazines which they had- and even had a few back issues that we bought. This is a small treasure trove for N-scale, HO-scale, and O-scale trains. The people who work here are the best - they give their opinions to you straight. There's no B/S; if you're looking for fake politeness, look elsewhere, because they'll let you know which trains they recommend and which products to avoid (Bachmann trains!). They carry big Christmas sets and random parts and pieces for your layout. There's a section of operating cars, a Woodland scenics corner, and random boxes of vintage stuff (tracks, buildings, train cars, etc). Sometimes you'll find the odd thing that doesn't seem to belong, but is perfect for your collection. Their prices are also really comparable to what you'll find on the Internet (vintage O-27 track for $2/section, anyone?). read more

The store is small and if you blink you will drive right by it. The inventory lacks compared to many that I've been to. I will say there are some obscure parts that I've found here that I have never seen elsewhere in my travels. I am an N Scaler and I try to utilize this store when possible. The owner seems nice enough, but I haven't chatted him up much. I would like to see a slightly larger N Scale inventory, don't expect to see couplers or decoders if you stop in here, they just aren't on the shelves, but I'm sure they could be ordered. read more

This hard-to-find little shop is tucked into a retail strip. You can't see it from the street. The man on duty (probably the proprietor, John McNeill), cheerfully demonstrated one of the train sets even though we clearly were just browsing, not about to buy anything. Displayed on one wall are collectible trains from yesteryear. I saw an engine that was just like my childhood toy. Suddenly I could recall its little whistle. Mine probably ended up in a dump somewhere. The shop has supplies for the HO, N, and O scale hobbyist. I felt like starting the hobby myself just to help out. read more

I'm an experienced n-scale railroader. Service was polite but a tad impersonal. I believe in supporting brick & mortar stores as much as possible, but it's hard to do when the store is closed three days of the week. I wanna pull for ya guy, but you've got to meet the customer half-way! That said, I did custom-order some Digitrax equipment from him, and my order arrived within a few days of placing the order! Prices are typical of B&M retail -- no complaints but no great deals either. N-Scale inventory is very thin; this store is a treasure trove if you're into Lionel. Forget about detail parts and accessories if you're an n-scaler. Scenic supplies are all about Woodland Scenics. Typical Kato inventory and retail pricing. Granted, there aren't many model railroad retailers in the Las Vegas valley, but we really need one a notch above this store. I get the feeling the proprietor runs the store as a retirement hobby, rather than an endeavor to create a thriving MRR shopping experience. read more

I sure do love my model trains, and this is one of a very few model railroad shops probably in the surrounding 250mi. Excellent selection of each gauge of model trains and supplies for all your building and modeling. I was actually shopping HO scale shipping containers on Ebay, Amazon, and bricks and mortar, and the Westside Trains shop ended up having the best prices of all as well as a very good selection of accessories. The owner is very helpful and was happy to take care of a few unique requests I had relating to my HO engines and I am a happy customer. read more

John's store is the only decent train store in Southern Nevada. Don't bother with Hobbytown since all they're interested in anymore is RC stuff. Westside carries N, HO, S and Lionel. He frequently has a good selection of discounted used equipment from other train modelers around town. read more

Being new to Las Vegas, I was excited to visit Westside Trains. I am an experienced model railroader, so maybe my expectations were too high. When I entered the store the person at the counter never even said a word to me. I guess customers are not that important. There was a lot of Lionel trains, but nothing really displayed very well. The HO products were few and basically for beginning modelers. Very few structure kits and certainly no craftsman kits. Equally lacking was any scratch building supplies other than a few plastistruct items. I always prefer to support local businesses, but it looks like I will have to go back to using online stores. read more
