a variety of cans of kombucha
    Mimi S.

I've been a fan of Whalebird since stumbling upon their tent at the farmers' market. I try to fill up my growler whenever I'm in town. Super easy since refills are all over--Whole Foods, Seeds, Spark Yoga. I've recently seen Verve coffee carry it up here in the Bay Area which makes me happy. The taste of Whalebird is amazing; fizzy, no weird strands floating, and full of flavor. My favorites are pamplemousse and ginger. I finally got to visit the brick and mortar last week. The worker (didn't catch her name) was super friendly and gave us a tasting of all the kombucha on the menu. Loved the seasonal batch of strawberry damiana. Heard they're releasing hard booch. If you're local, sign up for the Growler club!

The booch, the booch, the booch is on fire!

The booch is on fire! Recently discovered Whalebird and we're loving the booch, as they say. While we haven't had the pleasure of visiting their taproom -- but that will happen! -- we've picked up numerous cans and flavors around town. Whalebird is fresh, crisp and refreshing, and it's easy to see why you find it all over the Central Coast. While each flavor is unique and distinctive, we've taken a real liking to the Lavender Lemonade and decided to place our first online order for 16 cans. Wouldn't you know? The order arrived the next day, smartly packed -- no styrofoam or waste; just die-cut cardboard (that can be recycled) to separate and protect the cans. I'd be remiss not to mention that their customer service is top-notch, too. A shout to Hannah for the quick and helpful replies. Gotta love a business that makes a great product and provides great support.

After buying some at a local pizza place I was surprised to find local this place was. After we went to the beer brewer we came here. This place is nothing like one of those giant beer breweries. When you walk in, look left and you can see where they brew. This place is more like a bar. You walk in and the bar is right there. Their are taps against the wall and a tiny college fridge behind you. I think they had 8 on tap. I tried all of the flavors and came up with my 2 favorite. I got the Lavender Lemonade and Manguava. I have to admit, after you try them all, they taste very similar. You can no longer taste the lavender or guava. When I was in the pizza place I tried theParadise Peach I really liked it too. It wasn't on tap or available for sales. If you like Kombucha or you want to give it a try, this is a must visit. There aren't many Kombucha breweries I know of in where I live or vacation. Check Yelp, they have deals when you check in. Whalebird is the real deal. Give their Kombucha a try.

    This is really good!

Cute storefront and modest tasting room. We tried all their kombuchas except the hard stuff (no license for that). Great friendly service. Got some swag too. Wish I can find their booch in Bay Area.

If Whales could drink this delicious brew, they may fly too :)

UPDATE! ~~~~~~~~ NOW SOLD AT WHOLE PAYCHECK MARKET- near the Gelato Area. They have it ON TAP! WOW... & have lots of big cool bottles for you to fill. Refills of the huge bottle are $9. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I FEEL LIKE A WHALEBIRD after drinking their Yummy Kombucha! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Discovered the Whalebirds, Jake, & sample all kinds of yummy Kombucha at the SLO SAVOR Central Coast Festival. I would say that Jake & Whalebird was by far my favorite, after trying tons of other stuff. Not only is their product amazingly fresh, good, & priced fairly, but Jake is a super nice guy who knows his stuff. He took his time discussing & teaching me about the finer points of K making. I also have a standing invite to their Brewery & hopefully a look around. They also have a club, which is kind of like a wine club. I think you buy the initial WB bottle for $12.50/mo & then pay $2 for each refill. That sure beats Whole Paycheck Market by a mile. You also support yet another amazing local start-up business in the SLO area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Also: ON TAP ----- WHALEBIRD IS A MUST TRY..... SO SAVORY, FRESH, & AROMATIC YOU WILL FLY LIKE A WHALE-BIRD.... LIKE ME.... :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ P.S.- If you see me & see how much I eat... I am definitely a "mature" hefty WHALE......bird? But hey, how else can I do your Yelp reviews justice!

Tonight was trivia night, too bad we got here late and just made it for the last question. Open 7 days a week from noon till 8pm, 9pm or 10pm. Metered street parking. We arrived at 6:30 pm, which was a good time since the food and drink lines grew from 6:50 pm onwards. I recommend heading out 10 minutes early in case you get lost. Our rideshare drove past the alleyway entrance twice lol. They didn't see the small printed sign for Bang The Drum Brewery on the metal fence. Go down the alley and turn left, following the signs for Bang the Drum at Suite 160 (not 130). Then, walk up the ramp towards the foresty tree area; there will be another sign for the brewery. We saw an outdoor patio and several indoor tables with names printed on them for trivia night. No one checked our tickets, but the staff we interacted with were nice. Walk-ins for trivia night can claim any unmarked table. Luckily, our table was far back so I didn't need to use my ear plugs. It would have been too loud for me if we were next to the speakers. I enjoyed the event and didn't have problems with the logistics. My only complaint would be that questions were much harder than I thought. Many references were geared towards the older millennial generation. DRINKS ORDERED - Pinot Noir ($12 - Stephen Ross). It was good. Normally I don't like dry wines, but I appreciated the light body without tannins. The wine had dark cherry notes. - Rose ($10). It was just okay; I preferred the pinot over this. - Kelsey Blood Orange Cider ($9). It had a good balance of fruit and bitterness with a savory taste. The cider was dryer than I expected, but I enjoyed it more than the other one. - Kelsey Pineapple Cider ($9). It was just ok. I didn't taste the pineapple, but it was slightly sweeter than the blood orange. My bf seemed to enjoy his Lucky Day IPA ($8) and also went for the pinot. FOOD ORDERED - Soft Pretzel with Beer Cheese ($6.50). Chewy pretzel with a dark crust and big sprinkles of salt (but not too salty). The beer cheese tasted great; we ate it all up! - Spicy Veggie Curry Pot Pie ($10). The pie was ultra flaky and soft. I enjoyed the mild curry filling inside. Delicious! DESSERT ORDERED - Blueberry Mascarpone Pie ($5.50). It tasted alright. The blueberries were not so flavorful, and neither was the mascarpone cheese. There was too much moisture in the filling. While parts of the crust managed to stay crumbly, it also lacked flavor.
