Ok folks, here the scope on what the Heck. This is one of the best bar and grill the area for really great food. Love the atmosphere of a log cabin with wood burning fireplace. The owners come form the twin cities bringing with them the best sandwiches, salads, and dinners that are healthy and tasty. My favorites are The Greek gyros and the Monday night Chicago style hot dogs. (Both are awesome). Something you don't see being served around here much. Their pizza is homemade and and taste fabulous. I recently had their spinach salad that was unbelievably tasty. Trust me you will enjoy eating here. read more

Stopped in again on Memorial Day. Had the Mediterranean Chicken Wrap and my wife had the BLT Wrap. We shared a half sandwich with each other. Both sandwiches were outstandingly good. The Wrap's were I must say decently sized. Could not have been more perfect. Every ingredient was fresh along with the lettuce being crisp and cold. Wraps were fresh tasting and refreshing on a very hot 92 degree humid day. Service was friendly and prompt with drinks to the table quickly. Try the Wisconsin's Best Ice Cream next door in the gift shop. It's to die for. We have been dining at this restaurant since 2006 and we have noticed new owners are keeping this restaurant very clean. Love the huge big screen TV's. Can't wait to watch the Baseball Playoffs and the World Series again. This is a great FAMILY place without a bunch of drunk morons that we have experienced elsewhere in the area. Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary hosted a Birds and Beer here and we had a great time! We used the back room, which had space for 40 people and a television for the presentation. This would make an excellent space for any type of small event such as a meeting or reunion. The owners, Denise and Dan went out of their way to make sure our group was comfortable and well-fed. If you think this is "great pizza" then you are either a Minnesota tourist or have not been coming to What The Heck often enough. Regardless of pizza in two cities about two hours to the SW, and in a different state...local (Burnett and Washburn County residents) recall the day when What The Heck didn't make customers say What The Fck??!! Before the current owners, the popcorn was tastey, the pizzas cooked timely--and delivered to your table in a reasonable amout of 20-30 mins, even on a busy night--and wait staff were not replaced every 2 to 4 months. Order any pizza and it will now take 60 to 80 minutes. Even when you or your party are the only customers in the place. When asking why things are taking so long, management will say your pizza was "just put in the oven." They will then tell the busboy, who doubles as the chef, to put your pizza order in. Your order will arrive, but it will likely have been 90 mins now and the pizzas delivered to your table are not the ones you ordered. Don't worry you can always reorder. And wait another hour and a half. What the fck?! Well it's been 90 mins and you're hungry, having spent the previous hour and a half snacking on the parmesan cheese and overly-burnt popcorn. Choose any random day of the week and your experience will not vary. Really. On a busy night, look around at all the unhappy families and customers. Just sigh and realize we are now all in the same boat. Same crappy service; same distasteful experience. I wish the current owners would take a clue from the playbook of the previous owners and learn how to keep customers happy. The What the Heck tradition nowadays is really just a $hit stain in one's underwear. It all went downhill the day the current owners fired Shirley. Check out "The Shop" (behind A&H Market/gas station) or Glider's (in Webb Lake). Heck, even the Voyager Village bar (above their golf shop) all have better service. By the way--to the current owners & staff--put less oil in the popcorn and learn how not to burn it every single time. That would be a good step toward improving things. read more

Have have been going to what the heck for over 20 years. Never had a worse experience than today. When we got there on a Sunday afternoon there were 8 customers in the restaurant. We ordered four burgers and after an hour's wait was told that they ran out of buns and that it would be soon. After another 15 minutes we were told that they were almost ready. 10 minutes later we asked about them and we are told that they had to go get buns and they couldn't speed. When we told them that they should have told us about being out of buns 5 minutes after we order the waitress with the piercings made some excuse about heat exhaust exhaustion in the kitchen because it's so hot. read more

We have a cabin near by, and used to love the Friday night fish fry -- those were the days that they even had a salad bar. That was so long ago. We hadn't eaten at the What the Heck for years, so we gave it a try. Came in on a Friday night around 6, with no waiting. That could be a good sign.... Or a bad one. We got nice, limited menus. I thought "Good. They only cook what they can do well". My wife ordered a pizza, my son, the fish and chips, and I splurged on the 1/2 chicken dinner. No happy hour as other reviews mentioned, but they did have $1 off Moose Drool taps. The food? Pizza was very bland. The fish was like Swanson's out of a cardboard box. The chicken was not very flavorful and juicy, which should be priced at under $10 instead of $14. The Cole Slaw was warm, and my fries were cold. No refills on our waters, and the waitress was not interested in us at all. Total bust in my opinion, and we won't be back. Go to the Shop, or MacKinzie's landing if you want good food. I'd avoid this place unless you are desperate. Sorry What the Heck. I used to love you so. read more

The pizza is thin crust and pretty decent. But it is a tad spendy for a thin crust pizza. The place is kind of cool. It's an old log cabin with a big fireplace in the center. The outdoor deck is really nice and perfect for late summer festivities. Please note, if you plan on going there, you are going to wait forever. I don't know why it takes so long but you will grow a beard waiting for a pizza. Drinks are decently priced and there is a good selection at the bar. read more

I have been coming here with a retreat group 3 times a year for 6 years now and the food has always been fantastic. The groups have been anywhere from 14 - 22 people and as much as I try to remember to give them "warning" we are coming, often times that is not the case, but they always do an outstanding job. For the gluten free eaters they have a shrimp salad that I really love. Others have gotten their gluten free pizza and I have heard nothing but great comments about it. Their taco pizza is fantastic as is the walleye and jumbo shrimp. I think the only thing I haven't gotten myself is a burger, but they do have them. The prices are reasonable and it is just a cool place to go with a name like What The Heck! They do have cute little gift shop, but it is very easy to miss. Just a little shed side building to the back of the restaurant. I would like to see on better sign on there otherwise you probably will miss it and you do want one of their t-shirts. read more

I would highly NOT RECOMMEND going to this "restaurant." The service was absolutely horrendous and the wait was even worse. We waited over two hours for a pizza with a 19 month old and didn't even get it. Multiple tables that arrived after us got their pizzas before us and we asked multiple times for an update and our waitress told us there was no update. That best guess is that the waitress is incompetent and didn't put in our order. I will definitely be letting everyone know not to give any business to the incompetent owners of this horrible establishment. read more

Really, What the Heck? I've been coming there with friends whenever I'm in the area, for nearly 20 years. It's been a tradition to stop in at What the Heck for pizza, etc. every time we visit. I've always recommended What the Heck because they serve good pizza, reasonable prices, and until today, friendly service. The kitchen is pretty small, so you can expect to wait a little longer for food, but it's not been unreasonable. All the other good things about the establishment have made it worth the wait. Until today. 3 Women and a Guy walk into a bar. (And it's no joke.) There are 5 or 6 people sitting at the bar, and 2 more walk in behind us. A very pleasant young woman (I'll call her Server #1) takes our order, which includes 4 burgers, beverages, and an order of fried asparagus. It's not busy in the restaurant, with just our table and one other. It's slow enough that the other server/employee (whom I'll call Server #2), is standing on the other end of the room munching on food. We received our beverages and fried asparagus (which was delicious, by the way). After what seemed to be an unusually long wait (an hour), we inquired with Server #1 about our burgers. She tells us they are almost ready, and will be out very soon. More time goes by. The 2 people who came in after us have ordered a pizza, and are eating it already. We still don't have our burgers, so we inquire with Server #1 again. She tells us she just checked on our order, and they were out of buns, so someone had to run to the store to get some. Seemed like an odd answer, to not have buns an hour or so after opening. It was mostly odd because she had told us quite some time ago that the burgers would be "out very soon". More time goes by. We asked if the buns had even arrived yet. We are also curious as to whether the burgers have been cooked and are sitting there, or whether they are waiting to cook them until the buns arrive. She tells us "the burgers are cooked, yes, but... but... oh, I just can't explain it." Well, there's no need to, because none of this is making sense anyway. We respectfully communicated to Server #1 that after being there nearly an hour and a half and still not knowing the status of our food, we'd like our check, please (for what have received) and we'll move on. Server #2 walks over to our table and reiterates that they were out of buns, and she had to drive into town, and it's not a short drive .... Yeah, we've already heard all of this. May we please just have our check? We've been here almost an hour and a half and we are just going to move along. Server #2 becomes defensive. With what I would call a snarky tone and an attitude, she tells us how she "wasn't going to drive fast and get a speeding ticket just to get our buns." No apologies from her. She continued with unwanted explanations about the small kitchen, and how hot it was back there, etc. And then, with the bad attitude tone, she asks us: "Have you ever heard of heat stroke???" (I have absolutely no idea what any of this has to do with our missing burgers? If it's too hot to cook in the kitchen, then perhaps you should close it today.) One of the gals in our party responded to the question about heat stroke without any words, just a sound of frustration (kind of a half sigh/half throat sound of "uh"). Server #2 looked directly at my friend, tilted her own head to the side, and MIMICKED her. I could not believe it. I'm pretty sure I stood there with my mouth open for a few seconds before I realized that I had to get out of there right away. Server #2 was not going to let up, and this was not going to end well. I am typically pretty laid back and patient, always treat servers well, and I tip generously. I don't ever recall being treated this way by a server in my entire lifetime. She should not be working in a service industry. Two of us went up to the bartender/owner(?) to pay for the beverages and appetizer we consumed. He tells us the burgers are ready now, and they will bring them out. I explained that it didn't matter, we were leaving. He offered to wrap the burgers up for us to go, and also to comp the burgers. He did charge us for what we consumed, and I think he should not have even charged us for that under the circumstances. Especially after I told him that I was so angry that I could not stay there for another minute, and that we didn't want the burgers now. I hope the message was loud and clear. If you are willing to GIVE us the food and we still don't want it, then you have really offended us. As long as Server #2 is still employed there (blond with lots of piercings), I will not be visiting or recommending What the Heck. Come on What the Heck, we know you are better than this!!! read more

Horrible service, not worth the time. Waitress was rude, no greeting, threw menus on table without saying anything, and over 1/2 our order was missing, so she asks what are you waiting for? It was 2 kids pizzas and a cheeseburger... somehow our food was given to another table... also there was no toilet paper in the restroom. Told waitress, she literally grunted at me so I asked "what?" And she didn't say sorry or anything for our trouble, just responded "I'm working on it." Finally the food comes. Waitress doesn't have anything to say to me or my mom or the kids- who now have to wait even longer to eat (and we've been in the restaurant for almost 2 hours at this point) because the kids pizzas just came out of the oven and are too hot... but she goes over to my dad, puts her hand on his back and says "here you are sweetie" when giving him the cheeseburger. Very awkward considering she didn't say anything like that to the kids, my mom, or myself! Bill comes, there is no apology for the horrible service or wait time. No adjustment to the bill. After I asked, she did take 10% off our bill but didn't offer any type of apology. The food tasted good but the burger wasn't as good as Gliders, and we wasted almost 3 hours of a Saturday night sitting there in that sh- hole read more

My family recently picked up a large order of pizzas and appetizers from What the Heck. The food was ready quickly and everyone agreed it was delicious! The pizza was really good. What I really liked is how friendly the bartender and staff were. They were genuinely happy to have our business. The only reason I didn't give them a perfect five stars is that their broaster was broken; next time I would like to try the broasted chicken! read more

We went to pick up the pizza after an hour and were told it would be another hour and a half if we were lucky. Apparently take out just keeps getting pushed aside. And they seemed to think telling a customer to wait an additional 90 minutes was OK. Just horrible service and no consideration for their customers. They were so busy they didn't care about anyone, but they lost a customers in us who might actual go there when it isn't a busy night. Very poor operation. read more

We went one last summer and again tonight. It seems very short staffed.We had an extremely long wait last summer when we dined in. The pizza was good but overall, dinner and drinks took 2.5 hours. Tonight, we decided to give them another try but simply order 2 takeout pizzas. They said 45 minutes. So we waited and drive the 20 minutes to get there. I got in and it took 10 minutes for the staff to acknowledge me. I explained that I was there to get my pizzas. I was told it would be Al least another hour. I asked why I was told 45 minutes? Was told they were swamped. They had my number and did not even call about the delay. The restaurant looked to be only half full and not packed. Someone from the kitchen came out a and yelled at the waitress right in front of people making it very uncomfortable. I left without my pizzas as I could not wait an hour plus with kids waiting. It's too bad this place can't get their service up to par. read more

My family and I have been eating at WTH since 2003 and we have always been big fans. During the summer months, the restaurant is crowded and the food takes a long time. The wait-staff is hit or miss. We have had crabby waitresses and very friendly ones as well. Food is average but the pizza is great, even though it takes a very long time to cook. We recommend the garlic chicken pizza! read more
