This place I just enjoy so much!!! The style of ordering is similar to Jasons Deli BUT WAY MORE FASTER for the most part they get your food to do pretty quick (when its not immensely busy) Ive heard the Biscuits & Gravy is to die for but every time I come in i don't get there early enough and its all SOLD OUT! But their pastries, quiches, salads, muffins all for the most part have been tasty! Their salad and empanada I got once was good but I think just depending on your taste buds and liking the beets and dressing were a bit too much bitter and sour for me, the empanada was good but just a bit over cooked and too hard to cut in with STILL not bad food by any means still tasty but not necessarily amazing. The hash browns however Im not as impressed with their just SOOO PLAIN! They need more seasoning or at least salt. This is the most amazing bakery in the country. I travel extensively for work and pleasure and have had bread and pastries everywhere and NONE come close to the breads. As far as bakeries go, this one is tops for Jayhawk Country. Their loaves are of an old-world variety - ancient grains, modern grains, and the chaff in between. I have consumed many a loaf, and had long admired their tact and concern for adhering to principles of baking seemingly long forgotten. The bakery has been a dying art, replaced by sacked and shelved "artisan hearth loaves" at any store. Wheatfield's is a trip into the wood-fired past, pulling edibles through time from ancestral ovens to be purchased by you with a smartphone. Their dining area and diner of sorts is quaint, and befitting the quality of the artisans next door, working through dawn to provide a community with a warm and hearty sustenance. Nothing is more satisfying than the penetrating smell of fresh bread melting through the morning hours of hunger, and the wonderment of the coming day's revelations. If you can afford quality, would that you visit the WheatField's Bakery Cafe. I don't know if it's still the policy, but when I went to school at KU, every Thursday, Great Harvest and I believe Wheatfields would donate their bread to the on-campus church down from the Union, and a great community feast would be had around their bountiful generosity. The great owners and artisans of this place have sustained a city in so many ways. Patronize when at all possible, and revel in the majesty of quality breads: Ciabatta, Sourdough, the divine Pecan or Walnut-Raisin, the formidable Pane della Famiglia, the crusty baguette, or the pedestrian Pain de Campagne. I never get biscuits and gravy. I'm a Yankee so we just don't have it out here. So when I was visiting the lovely Lawrence, Kansas, a town way more hip than I was expecting it to be - I was told to stop here for breakfast. I asked the lady young lady upon ordering what she recommended - she said "biscuits and gravy" and man there could not have been a better recommendation to be had on that Tuesday morning. They were great! When you go there (and you better) get them. Oh, and get the half-size -because the half size is huge as it is! The gravy really had a nice fennel sausage flavor to it with just a little bit of pepper spice - and the biscuits were light and soft - made fresh there. It was delicious. I love Wheatfields Bakery. I stop every time I'm in Lawrence. The highlights? The pretzels are great. The scones are fantastic (but you have to get there early to get them). Mostly very reasonable. 3 stars for cashier service- For some reason whoever works in that position when I visit is often *so unfriendly and unappreciative. Gentleman put sev dollars in the tip jar from the register after I paid! As a former waitress- You do not actually deserve a tip just bc. A tip at a counter is quite ridiculous unless you're going *above and *beyond. Yes even during these times. 3 stars for accommodating customers during this time. There were several employees eating in the large closed dining area while the rest of us were all scrunched up trying to figure out where to go. Weeding around outside needs attention if you are to have tables there (which we used). Please *always ask if we want forks rather than just not include them (we had 3 salads!). read more

It's only been recently that I've spent much time in downtown Lawrence on weekend afternoons, so I'm not that familiar with the small and out of the way eateries. Today I stumbled on Wheatfield's Bakery and Cafe. As we walked by, the smell from the bakery was the deciding factor to go in. Pausing to study the menu taped to the door, a gentleman coming out smiled at us and said "go on in, it's all very good" He was right. The bakery counter is to the far right with all kinds of baked goods and breads. The aroma inside was wonderful. A vast array of sandwiches, soups and salads were presented on the menu over the counter. They also have a full breakfast menu. The Roast Beef and Cheese came on Country French bread, chewy crusted, flavorful in itself. The beef was generous and delicious, white cheddar cheese and a mild mayo/horseradish sauce. The Turkey with Cranberry relish was presented on Walnut sage bread, bursting with flavor of mild sage with walnut chunks baked in. Turkey was moist and a thicker cut than I expected. All was covered in a tangy cranberry relish giving the sandwich a sweetness that was the perfect garnish. Both sandwiches came with pickle spears. Heating or grilling would have made both sandwiches even better. On our way out, we examined the bakery offerings. Having just eaten and being stuffed I didn't purchase any for later. Upon arriving home, now I wished I would have bought a loaf of the kalamata olive bread, it looked wonderful. Oh well, there will be a repeat visit. Inside the cafe was an ecclectic flair with local artists work on display, and some interesting architectural features. Most noticeable was the mosaic tilework that started outside and wrapped around through the window frames into the interior wall. Depicting sunflowers, the tilework adds a little extra to the decor. Hmm. The more bread I eat at Wheatfields and Great Bread Co, the more I realize how different the quality is. Sure, Wheatfields serves sandwiches and breakfast, but the bread and service is sooooo much better at Great Bread Co! This time I got the frittata breakfast sandwich, and while it was good (I love me some omelets), the bread didn't taste as fresh as last time. My friend's classic breakfast plate looked very, very ordinary. That's all I have to say about that. Doesn't help that the service here is a bit emo. As in, too much sarcasm, lack of smiles, and odd smirks. Hmm. I know you guys are super busy most mornings, but everyone knows that carbs taste better with a smile! read more

Wheatfields has my favorite cheap lunch in Lawrence. For $5.95, you can get a cup of their soup of the day and a side salad with fresh bread. The side salad is FABULOUS with their honey poppyseed and is more like a fancy, small entrée salad rather than an iceberg, croutoned mess like you'd expect. Their baked goods are wonderful, and I'm particularly fond of their vegan almond ginger spice cookie and their cranberry walnut bread. I often find myself buying a loaf of the bread and toasting it for myself at home. So why 3 stars for a place I seem to like so much? Their staff. No one on the staff seems particularly excited to have you there, and some of them are simply downright rude. The last few times I've gone in, I've placed my order with the girl at the counter and she has treated me like I'm a nuisance. Most recently, my sister came home after ordering a cheesecake and mentioned that the girl at the front counter was rude to her. I'm willing to forgive the occasional aloofness of a staff, but when it becomes a habit? It puts a bad taste in my mouth that even their pecan tartlet can't fix. read more

WheatFields is the place to go for a fat, moist sugary sugar cookie. This is the cookie you get if you want to take a giant bite and not enunciate words for a long time while you enjoy the flavor of Mom's sugar cookie melting all over your mouth and crumbs dripping down your chin. Lunch: Turkey cranberry, Croque Monsieur, and even the peanut butter and jelly is awesome. Empanadas are usually pretty good too, depending on the flavor that day. Dinner: They change the menu monthly, but fried chicken on Wednesdays is always a go to. However, chicken pot pies with a little hot sauce on it is my favorite! A Lawrence institution brought to you by the same people as Free State Brewing is agreat spot for breakfast and lunch if you don't mind a bit of hustle and bustle. The food here is outstanding, though a bit on the expensive side. Very vegetarian friendly (I love the tempeh reuben) with a rotating list of specials as well as a quiche, empananda and focaccia of the day. This menu has something for everyone and focuses on the soup, sandwich and salad crowd. The lunch and breakfast menu are different and you can't order breakfast after the cut-off point. I always seem to be behind the person in line arguing about that fact. Their dinner options are somewhat limited though when I've gone I've always had an excellent meal. The logistics here can be frustrating. Food is purchased at the counter and more than once I've gotten my food and had no place to sit. It's best to scope out a table with your dining companion and have one of them reserve the table (staff frowns upon this). Just because the line is out the door doesn't mean there isn't seating as the lobby is small and shares space with those waiting for their baked goods. Be sure you are in the right line, because when it's busy you may not know. A staff member will ask your order while in line and they generally don't like indecisiveness. By the time they ask you what you ant to order, be sure you know it. Between the order taker and the cashier is a tempting case showing some of the daily specials as well as a variety of cookies. I find this kind of funny you can't actually see the daily special until you've already ordered it. Oh well. The cashier gives you a table tent so someone can deliver your order when ready. Soups, breads, sides and sometimes salads are handed to you right there while more complex sandwiches you have to be delivered. Personally I find this frustrating as manners dictate I don't eat my meal until everyone at the table has theirs. The food, though is worth the somewhat complex ordering process. The bread of course is the highlight, but what they put between the bread is quite tasty. Typically I get the special, but my ol' standby is the tempeh reuben (why the order taker always confirms with you that I know it's not corned beef is beyond me). The portions are small and the prices can be a bit deceiving as you might think you'll get more than you are. My experiences have been fraught with inconsistencies. Incorrect orders along with stringy meat and vegetables way past their prime have made me feel like I'm rolling the dice never knowing what to get. When it's good...it's really good. And when there are problems, the problems tend to be big. Overall I like eating here, though not on a regular basis as I never quite know what to expect. Will I get a table? Will our order come out right and in a reasonable time frame? The food here is worth these frustrations though , and I recommend it highly as long as you aren't expecting a nice relaxing sit down meal. read more

Average a best. The place was busseling with people for lunch. Everything looked good but a few things were lacking. The staff was not very friendly, it was busy but there was barely any eye contact or any effort to make us feel welcome. The food was average, nothing special, obviously fresh but not much flavor. We were hoping for better with the dessert but the same was true. Ordered from a second staff member who was didn't even look me in the face and when I asked her opinion between two items she gave me a one word answer. I can't believe I'd never eaten here. I've had their bread and pastries on numerous occasions but never actually made it into the establishment to eat until today. Love the feel of the place. Super crowded at lunch and still easy to navigate and comfortable. Easy menu to navigate, and it's positioned up front so I don't have to feel like a dumbass squinting at a menu that's ten feet away while a cashier stares. Thoughtful. That's how I'd describe the place in a word. I had the pastrami, but I almost went with the turkey cran. What a great sandwich. Simple. Clean. And, I NEVER eat mayo, but I forgot to ask for them to 86 it, so I ate it anyhow, expecting I would open n scrape about halfway through. To my pleasant surprise, it was properly dressed in such a way that the mayo did what I assume it was invented for instead of oozing out of my sandwich and triggering my gag reflex. I was gonna go four stars just cause I usually save five for the best of the best. But damn, I ate mayo, and I wasn't just OK with it, I enjoyed the hell out of that sandwich. Everytime we're in Lawrence, my husband insists on going to Wheatfields and I have to say, we are never disappointed! Their sandwiches are delish (the #16 is great...and I am not even usually a fan of ham and pineapple) and you can't beat the olive bread! We have also done breakfast and very much enjoy the biscuits and gravy. I also recommend getting a piece (or loaf!) of their foccacia when they have it...often I find foccacia to be a little dry but theirs is done RIGHT. P.S. You can get a small selection of good wine and decent beer if you visit for dinner! P.S.S. GET THE VEGAN COOKIES. Seriously, they are amazing, particularly their ginger one! read more

This place was the standard Saturday morning 'pick me up' breakfast/brunch/lunch. Depending on the time I decided to wake up after some Friday night fun. The food is superb. I recommend the turkey cranberry sandwich with the salad. The salad is delicious with the perfect amount of beets, which I happen to love. The sandwich is also very delicious! It's this bread with nuts, berries and goodies baked into it, while the turkey to cranberry ratio is perfect. And the bread..... I can't say that I tried their pastries, however they always were a popular choice among other patrons. Their soups are a great choice as well. The atmosphere is great. Very college, hipster locale and very laid back. It is a legit hippy staff with dreadlocks and all. So the service is not necessarily all about customer service and efficient with attention to detail, but I don't think they are trying to be. Good thing their food is awesome. I had a large chai latte and my husband had a double macchiato. The total with tax was $26.89. They had many tempting-looking dessert items, and they also have a tempting-sounding dinner menu with reasonable prices. Wheatfields is one of the many reasons I wish I still had a long layover on Mass St. to transfer buses in the morning. Before Lawrence Transit changed their schedule, I had a twenty minute window in the mornings, which I often spent strolling down to this charming little bakery for breakfast in the morning. Barring the occasional lazy Sunday morning when I actually have time to whip up a morning feast, I'm generally not the type of person who likes huge breakfasts. This means I haven't tried any of their sandwiches or the biscuits and gravy everyone raves about. What I have tried (and loved!) are the bagels, the apricot and the herb & cheese scones, the muffins, and their multigrain brötchen. Additionally, the boyfriend and I have purchased loaves of their Country French bread here to go with our dinners a couple of times, and we've never been disappointed. I also love the fact that they use a huge wood-fired oven to bake all of their dishes, utilizing local resources for fuel and cutting down on their energy use. Many of their ingredients are also local, and they can often tell you exactly which farm they come from. As with most bakery-fresh items, the only downside to getting a loaf of bread here is that they don't have a great shelf life. This is due to the lack of preservatives in their foods, which is great for your body, but it does mean you have to finish off the bread within a couple of days if you don't want it to get stale. (I use this fact as an excuse to include extra carbs in as many meals as possible. What? I'm cutting down on food waste.) read more
