I should have known that wouldn't make good sandwhich bread (too hard and chewy) but they really should have known- they're bakers. Really the only good thing was the cookie. Let me tell you about my love for biscuits and gravy. I love them; however, not too many places can actually get the awesome flavor of gravy down. I usually rely on just eating my sister's biscuits and gravy because I can count on her. Other times, I've had to douse my meal with hot sauce to get any flavor. Mind you, I'm Mexican and I need the extra flavor in most of my meals. I'm visiting Lawrence for the first time as one of the biggest KU fans to have ever lived in California with absolutely zero ties to the university in my family. Anyways, I'm staying with my former math teacher from high school and volleyball coach and while she's off teaching and after I dropped off her daughter at school, I found my way to WheatFields thanks to yelp. Upon arrival you order at the front and they basically have your food ready by the time you finish paying. It was interesting that I was given a cup and told to fill it with my coffee of choice and they would put the steamed milk in it for me. After that my half order of biscuits and gravy were ready and I sat down to eat and work on my laptop. At first bite, I was thoroughly impressed with the flavor and it only got better as I kept eating. They definitely add a noticeable kick to it and you can see the red pepper flakes in it. It's not spicy though, it just has so much flavor. The half order was plenty enough for me, I can't imagine how big the full order is. Stopped in here for a quick, but hearty breakfast while on a road trip. It was a good spot! I had an omelette with lots of fresh veggies. Their bread is delicious and fresh, you can tell they use high quality ingredients. We went on a Sunday morning and just beat a large crowd, so be prepared to wait in line if you come at prime time. I didn't have one of their cinnamon rolls but they smelled great and they are HUGE! read more

Wheatfields might seriously be the best bakery I've ever seen in the US. Their bread, cakes, and pastries are excellent. Their lunch menu on the other hand is kind of bland. For example- all of their sandwiches use high quality ingredients but they lack a kick. There is almost no mayo, mustard, or other garnishes in the sandwiches. The sandwiches themselves are very small and leave you wanting more. In fact, they're kind of a rip off. I recommend skipping the sandwiches. Buy your own baguette & make yourself a mean turkey, basil, and tomato sub back at the house. read more

I love this place. I practically live here. The food is excellent, the staff are perfect, and the bread and pastries are to die for. Four stars instead of five because of the eternally shrinking sizes. The baguettes used to fill the paper bag, now they are a mini baguette. The carrot cake used to be a huge piece, now it's half the size. Classic breakfast comes with only one slice of bread now; used to be two. Even the sandwiches seem smaller. I appreciate the European portions - they were never the obscene portion sizes some restaurants serve - but you didn't have to shrink them more. Why? Why? Why? The place is extremely busy. You must be turning a huge profit. We customers are noticing the shrinking sizes. Also the coffee, served from huge carafes, is often not very hot. read more

Since I live in Lawrence and go to church right across from Wheatfields i can't help but notice the millions of people that come in hoping to get the best piece of bread in the world, and they come out happy people telling themselves job well done going to this place. The service is so great that on Monday when the power went out they still kept on making bread. If you haven't had a piece of Wheatfields bread then in my mind you are not fully human yet. The coolest thing about Wheatfields is that one time they won an award for best donuts, and they don't even make donuts. You will be more than astonished when you have your first piece of Wheatfields bread, and the second, and the third, the the fourth, and so on. I wish they had a bakery in Denver! Their bread is full of rainbows, clouds and unicorn sparkles. Magic stuff, peeps. The dude & I shared a pastrami on sourdough rye and a turkey on walnut sage. And two chocolate dipped biscotti. Then got two loaves to go. It made our drive through Kansas so much fluffier and almost bearable. I'd have lunch here every week if I could teleport!! I like it. A simulated food co-op for off duty professors and their ilk. You order at the counter, they give you half the stuff on a tray and bring the rest out to you. You grab your own cutlery and fill your beverage cup. The comrades/interns/junior bakers bus the empties from the tables. Nice salads and specials and, of course, bread. The sunrise, sunshine, whatever morning coffee blend is worth getting off your keester, up out of your chair, and getting yourself a refill (refills are unlimited but cups are small - it's like some clever Scandinavian solution to giving everyone unlimited refills without instantly draining the carafe). Overall: food is good and the atmosphere is nice. This is also your go-to place for croissant and the like in Lawrence. read more

I wish this place was in my neighborhood. I wondered in here on a Sunday afternoon for some coffee and something sweet. They have a large menu and it made me smile to see how much they make in house. They have salads, sandwiches, soups, breakfast items, pastries and about 10 fresh breads. I wanted to eat more, but I was still stuffed from lunch. I ordered an Americano and then had a hard time choosing from the 8 different cookies, including a vegan peanut butter almond option. I ended up with the peanut butter chocolate chip. It was fresh and was the perfect size, not a monster cookie, but not to tiny either. It complimented to my coffee. They also serve dinner too and change the menu to accommodate the freshest ingredients. So many dishes sounds tempting. Next time I'm in Lawrence I will be back. What a great shop read more

I rarely explore the menu much, because the Turkey Cranberry is one of the best sandwiches in America...I mean, it has to be! It's all so amazing, the bread is heavenly (walnut sage bread or something like that), the turkey is enormously better than any normal deli. The few other things I've had are awesome. Cookies are sweet, gooey and delicious. For breakfast, I don't even normally like biscuits and gravy but love them here. They could use a better chip selection. For the most part, I adore Wheatfields, but occasionally something offensive will come along. They have a wide variety of offerings, and all are pretty tasty. Bread - nice selection of artisan bread, can get it sliced and they have a punch card. I enjoy the rosemary bread in particular. Desserts - they have a great case of fancy desserts. The eclair is pretty tasty. I had a small sandwich cookie once - not so great, too dry and not enough flavor. Tiramisu - awesome. Breakfast - I LOVE their biscuits and gravy. A half biscuit will more than fill you. I can't imagine getting the full order. At it's best the biscuit is nice and fluffy and the gravy is fresh, and it's worst you get an un-warm biscuit with kind of sludgy gravy. But it still tastes delicious. French toast is good; never tried their omelets or quiche, but have been tempted! Their breakfast sandwich is pretty awesome. Offensive item - the smoked trout. I don't know much about smoked trout, but was thinking smoked salmon. It was a really salty cooked piece of trout. It was so salty I couldn't finish it, which is unlike me. Chai is only okay, and they serve it in a pretty but kind of obnoxious mug. Sandwiches - I have had delicious sandwiches and disappointing ones. They all sounds good, but there have been a couple with French bread that was too hard to eat and made up most of the sandwich (and flavor). They have an awesome-looking dinner menu, but I have sadly not been here yet for that! Will have to go someday. Empanadas are A+ Seating is sparse - be prepared to scout tables if you come during a busy time. I wouldn't try to bring more than 4 people here. read more

I love to stop by Wheatfield's for a fresh baguette and dessert. The bread is amazing, I haven't found anything better in the greater KC metro. My wife loves the vegan cookies and 10 year old son loves the chocolate chip. I've sampled both and they are both tasty. I've ordered a chocolate eclair on a few occasions and it is super, super rich with a sweet custard filling and decadent chocolate topping. This is a fantastic and well run bakery. Being well run really makes a difference. I am going more and more frequently. Their pastries and breads are the best. Sadly, more and more bakeries have some really marginal pastries. Sometimes I leave a bakery wishing I just bought an expired Hostess product instead. NOT HERE! Everything is fresh and tasty. Amazingly - everything here is reasonably priced too! There are some fancy bread places in Lawrence and KC that charge over 8 and sometimes 12 dollars for a loaf of bread. This bread is just as good and usually at the $4 price point. No need to mortgage the house for a great loaf of bread or pastry. They have full meals here too. I'd give the meals a 4 star. Good food. Good price. I was excited to have their fried chicken special (one night a week only). It was pretty darn good but I hoped for better. Ditto for all their meals. I always leave with a smile and satisfied but I always expect the meals to be the same 5 star awesomeness as the bread and pastries. Possibly the best bakery in Kansas - I know of no bakery any better. This is our favorite Lawrence breakfast spot except for the seating, which is "first come fend for yourself". The coffee is really good but you must get up and fill your own cup which can also be competitive since the coffee pots are right next to the check out register. Despite these service deficiencies, the breakfast is well worth it, with traditional as well as trendier items on the menu. Their outstanding bread also makes their lunch sandwiches better than average. The hipster staff is always courteous. As a bakery, order and carry away from a wide variety of freshly baked breads and pastries. read more

Yum! Craving bread before leaving Lawrence, I walked into Wheatfield's to bring some home for dinner (not that I didn't dig in after getting to my car--somehow managing to save some for my meal). It was awesome! Of course, I had to choose between the leftovers of the day (didn't walk in until 6ish), but my multigrain bread was delicious! Had bits of sunflower seeds, oat and wheat, was soft inside and the crust was crispy. And right now they have little pumpkin pies for the season! They were delicious, and just the right size! Please, please come to Kansas City... WheatField's has the best ciabatta I think I've ever had. It's super crusty and crispy on the outside and then soft and fluffy on the inside. It's really dreamy. I went to WheatField's a few days before we were leaving town so I couldn't get a lot but I tried the ciabatta (split and toasted with butter for breakfast...so yummy) and a few of their cookies which were all divine! As I've mentioned, I'm pretty critical when it comes to cookies and these all had good balanced flavor. My husband stole the almond macaroon that I was saving (the only one I really couldn't eat on the way home from Lawrence because I was SO FULL) so I didn't get that one BUT I have all kinds of plans to start driving to Lawrence for bread (and cookies) every week so will try the macaroon soon!! This place was super cute. I only did a take out order but was impressed that they were able to handle a pick up order for 9 in a short amount of time during lunch rush hour. The breads and everything looked delicious and I can't wait to come back and try some of their baked goods. All the ingredients were super fresh and the establishment was cute. It's more of a clean- Panera bread kind of cute but the baked goods more than makes up for what it lacks in design. This was my go-to spot ... for coffee & cinnamon rolls on Sat. mornings, Kalamata olive bread and ciabatta rolls during the week, and Snickerdoodles for a regular pick-me-up. Still a great place to grab & go: - Empanadas are flaky, delicious, and filling - Crisp side salads with beets, chickpeas, cucumbers, sunflower seeds, onions, croutons - Quiches were ... mostly sold out (my mistake, arrived too late in the day). Wheatfields Bakery Café was exquisite. The service was impeccable and my hungry child Aidan loved his ciabattini sandwich. As the young ones say, "it was absolute flame, omm!" My other two sons Jay and Liam also loved the ciabattini sandwich. As Liam says, "it was tight." I also loved my croissant sandwich. Unable to stomach another elementary school quality hotel complimentary breakfast, I found myself at WheatField Bakery Cafe. Thank god! Great selection of options from pastries to breakfast items. Had no experience with the lunch, but the menu items sound delicious! Friendly and somewhat hipster staff. I have been here twice for breakfast it was not my favorite breakfast spot. I am a very picky eater though. I thought the portions were not sizable for the price and nothing special about what I had. The food wasn't bad but it just wasn't anything that impressed me. Needless to say I've only visited twice and it was during busy periods. I have heard though the fresh bread is amazing so I will have to give it a try. -1 haven't eaten at Wheatfields for 20+ years perhaps but when I came back to Lawrence I really wanted a fruit tart (10/10 in the past). Wow, the short-ish white girl on Tuesday, 3.16.2021, ringing up bread sales, the exasperated boy taking sandwich orders who made my wife feel foolish because I asked them to ring up the sandwiches and bread together. Literally the first truly ugly experience in Kansas ever. She made me feel very bad and I truly regretted destroying memories of going there the first 7 years of its existence, and fun delicious lunches and wonderful pastries after Saturday Suzuki classes. The tart has lost flavor(2/10). There's hardly any custard covering the chocolate covered crust both of which are tasteless. Well, the memories will ..... no, they are tainted now. There's NO LOVE there. Why? What happened? [I think Wheatfield's must have another owner]. Not able to submit 1 star I can still recommend the bread. The wonderful turkey & cranberry sandwich (4/10) is a far cry from the panache of years ago (10/10), and many many past sandwiches. I'm stunned. I mean, the Carnegie Deli stayed the same until it closed; same for Charlie Trotter's. Yes, Wheatfield's was also a great place to eat. Colissessano's in WV went way down after Spider died. This place was just what we were looking for. The food was fresh and fast. All sandwiches tasted good, came on interesting bread and as a bonus they had good coffee, bread to go and excellent macaroons. I would go here again for sure.
