Excellent service, beautiful grounds and decor, however the food was a disappointment, just average. I would return but just for drinks.

A Valentine's dinner that did not impress!…read more Valentine's has always been a very special holiday for me. My husband and I decided to spend the weekend in the Berkshires, which was lovely and quiet. I made reservations ahead of time for this highly rated wine bar and very close to where we were staying. First off, due to the previous weather/storms they had no street parking. But luckily we parked in a nearby lot. Upon arrival, the restaurant bar area was very nice and romantic. The server brought us to our table but I was a bit disappointed in the ambiance. I mean the bar area was a bit darker and the table that we were being seated at had a lot of light. Now, don't get me wrong, It was Valentine's day which screams romantic and there was no romantic vibe to this restaurant. After mentioning this to our server she did move us and turned down the lights a bit which was much better. Food/Drinks: The menu was not big at all which was nice. I ordered a dirty martini to start which needed more olive juice and my husband ordered a rum cocktail which he enjoyed. For starters, I ordered their Over Roasted Parsnip which was very good and filling. My husband had their Beet Salad which he said was excellent. For entrees, I had their Seared Duck Breast. I really enjoyed the caramel sauce but did not love the duck itself. My husband had the Oven Roasted Chicken Statler which was very dry he could barley eat it. Also, since this is a wine bar I will say the wines were nothing special which was also a bit disappointing. I wish they had something unique and special to offer especially being on a Valentine's Day. I feel this place may be more of a summer destination. Service: Service was excellent I will say. Our server was always asking how things were, checking on us and if we needed anything and asking about any additional drinks. etc. Also, the Manager came over to ask how everything was but he spefically looked at me. I think my husband would've mentioned his meal being dry if he looked at him as well but my husband could've spoken up too. We did say something to our server after she asked about the chicken dish, which they ended up taken off the bill which was very nice. Overall: I didn't love Alta Wine Bar my first time here, but I would come back in the spring or summer months when the weather is warm to try it again. Cheers~

Alyssa was friendly, attentive, and very easy to talk to, adding to the restaurant's welcoming and inviting atmosphere. We started with the Lemon Blossom cocktail, which was smooth, citrusy, floral, and incredibly easy to sip -- a refreshing and delicious way to begin the meal. For appetizers, we ordered the 110 Cajun Yellowfin Tuna, and it completely impressed us. The tuna tasted incredibly fresh, with vibrant flavors and the perfect balance of spice. We enjoyed it so much that after finishing the first plate, we immediately ordered a second one. For our mains, I had the shrimp scampi, while my husband ordered the Cajun-style Norwegian salmon with broccoli and roasted Brussels sprouts. Both dishes were flavorful, satisfying, and nicely prepared. Between the delicious food and warm hospitality, this turned out to be a wonderful dining experience.

But that said, the food is actually quite good. The portions are small, but while staying here, you can order as much as you'd like. Service is on point, the buffet bar is not bad as well. And everything that is served is served with an essence of healthiness. Sometimes the food could be overly salted, but you generally really can't go wrong here. Taste: 4.5/5 Value for money: n/a Ambiance: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Things we tried: 1) Moon burger: this is okay, the wheat bread made it taste healthier 2) eggs Benedict: tastes as it sounds! 3) Greek Yogurt: taste super healthy 4) scallops: this was super good and cooked to perfection when they offer it 5) halibut: cooked very well too 6) brown butter vanilla ice cream: this is something we kept coming back to Also it's a digital device free dining area. Meaning no phones.

The inside dining room has pretty basic decor and the outside dining area is kind of pathetic - it is concrete surrounded on 4 sides by buildings. There are a few small trees planted in the courtyard, but it is such a shame that the outdoor dining is in a made-man box when part of the point of being out in the Berkshires is to enjoy the beauty of the nature in the area. The overall ambiance was nothing special and it almost seemed like a restaurant for a conference center. The menus were the same for the 4 days that I ate here, with only small variations for the specials. Breakfast is waiter service, lunch is mainly an attended buffet though you can order made-to-order specials, and dinner is waiter service. The staff is ill trained - we did not even know that specials were an option on our first day here because the waiters did not inform of us those options. They routinely forgot what we ordered and did not act in a professional manner (aside from one waitress who was great). The portion sizes are comically small; the first night that I had dinner here, I ordered the bass and my husband ordered the steak and we each got about a 2-3 oz. portion of the protein. We were horrified though luckily they let us order more food than the "choose one" appetizer and entree after we complained. After we learned that, we ordered 4 apps and 2 entrees between the two of us for our subsequent meals. A lot of the dishes use the same sauces, so there is limited variation. Pro tip: if you order the brown rice bowl, you can ask them to top it with fish or chicken to make it a more substantial dish. Some of the food was really tasty (shishito peppers, chickpea fritters), but other dishes were pretty plain. I understand that they are trying to only have healthy options, but there was no explanation as to why certain items were on the menu or even the best way to pair apps with certain entrees in order to make the most nutritious combo. All in all, the restaurant is lacking in food variation, staff training, and ambiance. There are some good options, but it was disappointing given the cost.

The crowd was chatty at first but eventually realized what a show they were missing and all eyes were on Glori and her band. Cocktails are very creative and delicious but quite pricey. The food was tasty- the menu is limited - maybe only 6-7 options. We laughed at the Mini Chicken Schnitzels as a name that you would only find in the Berkshires to describe chicken nuggets. Im sure they were delcious but we went for a cheeseburger and the salmon carpaccio. My husband said that the burger was the best he has had for a long time. Just perfection! The salmon was great too- very finely sliced raw fish with a delicious sauce. I also got a salad which could have been half the size but it was really yummy with parmesan crisps.

The rooms are somewhat charming - a bit dated with older fixtures - but cute. If you are going to Kripalu and don't want to stay on campus, it's a nice alternative. The cons: We have been staying at inns and B&B's for many decades. When a place advertises "breakfast included" it typically means choices for a full breakfast. This really needs to read "continental breakfast included." The homemade muffins were very good, granola and greek yogurt also good (though would have preferred a choice of yogurts as I prefer vegan), some fresh fruit, slices of bread and a bowl of hard boiled eggs was all nice but not what I would call "breakfast included." Also, we noticed immediately that the room we had did not fit the description given to us of our room when we booked. We were told it had a mountain view which it did not. Upon asking about this, the gentleman at the desk kindly acknowledged that in his email communication he had inadvertently mixed up the room descriptions. This was not an issue and the room we had was fine but it would have been nice to have received some token of recognition for this miscommunication.
