    Scallop watermelon crudo. So good!
    Michelle F.

The scallops were spectacular, and both the Crudo and the risotto. The watermelon with the scallop was an amazing pairing and the arugula and vegetables really topped it off. The scallop and lobster risotto was so hearty, with large chunks of lobster and six large diver scallops.

Stumbled across this gem of an ocean view restaurant and patio while exploring PEI! AMBIENCE (5/5) Looking for a tasty outdoor (or indoor) bite while overlooking the harbor? Saunter over to the Wheelhouse! The charmingly nautical bi-level restaurant - which boasts a group table in its cool upstairs turret alcove - has an expansive outdoor deck with lots of seating. FOOD (4/5) Like many places on PEI, Wheelhouse specializes in local seafood and produce. We ordered: Lobster Melt: friend liked her warm fresh lobster roll slathered in melted cheese. Fried Chicken and Dumplings: while I was startled that the dish came dry instead of the creamy chicken-and-flour dumpling stew I was anticipating, Wheelhouse's take combined crisp fried chicken nuggets with hot fried PEI potato balls - pretty good! SERVICE (5/5) Friendly! One of the waiters answered a ton of our questions about the island, including pointing out the oyster socks in the harbor and neighboring fishery that provide the restaurant with its daily catch.

Quaint and fresh dining room with unparalleled view of the harbour. Delicious tender blue mussels and pork belly scallop as a quick snack before our deep sea fishing excursion! Highly recommend! Quick and friendly service! (Go during lunch time) Wear sunblock and bug spray!

Excellent fresh food with a menu full of unusual items and titles. The service was delightful and welcoming. We had the "Fiddler's Green" (named after the Tragically Hip song) salad and seafood chowder accompanied with Grandma's raisin bread. Delicious!!!!!

Recommend! Best meal I've had on the island to date. The poached cod was truly excellent.

We were lucky to get one of the last available outdoor tables! Sarah, who helped us, was very pleasant and helpful. We started off with the baked oysters that came 3 ways: with champagne cream, Rockefeller and miso aioli. We loved them all although I thought the champagne cream was a a tad salty. We also shared the perfectly cooked salmon served with romesco and pickled onions. This dish stole the show! Each bite was a symphony of flavors, every component complemented each other. Alas, the 2 dishes were not enough and made us order a dozen more of 3 types of oysters, They were all really good and served with Mignonette and cocktail sauce. Needless to say, we left with big smiles on our faces.

It's on the corner of the main artery and a side street, which is pedestrianized. They offer unbelievably fresh beautiful oysters on half shelf for happy hour. Those were some of the best tasting oyster's we have ever had. Highly highly recommend. The staff are welcoming and attentive. They also have a great selection of wines by the bottle or glass. Ideal afternoon activity . The restaurant is beautifully decorated with booths, high tops and window tables. You can also sit outside should you desire. They have heating lamps if needed.

    The Monarch - Monarch burger

    The Monarch

On my first visit to Monarch since moving back to New Glasgow, my wife and I came on the evening…read morethat they debuted their new spring/summer menu. The ABC salad was a tasty good mix - spring mix, roasted apples, bacon aioli, cheddar curds and cornbread croutons. The star of the show was definitely the bacon aioli which had a killer smoky flavour and elevated the dish. Pulled pork sandwiches have been an ubiquitous menu item for more than a decade, but Monarch did well by it with a savoury pork that wasn't mushy and overcooked and a red cabbage slaw that was flecked with coconut for a unique take on a standard pulled pork pairing (PPP). Bonus points to Monarch for the GF option for the bun, not to mention how much of the whole menu can be made GF! A side of crunchy thyme chips were everything you'd want in a chip and a nice textural contrast to the sandwich. My coconut haddock was a wonderfully well-executed dish - flaky fish and a crisp, coconut crust that wasn't *too* coconutty. A dill aioli added a tartar-esque flavour, and the roasted potatoes were an herby complement to the fish. The coconut slaw made another tasty appearance. On a return visit, we were there on one of Monarch's monthly wine nights. At four courses - each with a paired wine - and a $60 price tag, this has got to be the best quality per dollar in town! The meal started with a rhubarb and radish salad. The fresh, local veg and tart vinaigrette paired well with an acidic Ontario Riesling. For the main, a cut of Red Mountain beef tenderloin was *so* tender and although tenderloin isn't always the most flavourful cut, the quality of the locally-sourced meat stood out. Roasted veg and a pop of vegetal brightness from pea shoots rounded out a delicious dish. A Chilean Carmenere had a really unique flavour profile; I'm admittedly not familiar with the varietal, but it stood up well to the beef and was of great interest on its own. A cheese course eased our taste buds back down and an Australian chardonnay had a big enough flavour to hold its ground against the salty umami of the aged cheese. To cap our delicious meal, a loose apple and rhubarb tart, with a healthy (figuratively) dollop of whipped cream was a great send-off with mix of sweet and tart, and the crumble breaking up the soft apple and rhubarb. A lightly sweet sauv blanc with a hint of acidity finished off the wines. Monarch is a star on the local food scene and if you're not darkening their doorway, you're doing your taste buds a grave disservice.
