Cool kitchy 80's Prince themed speakeasy. Drinks are great! Limited food menu, just a few bar apps.

My two girlfriends and I ate dinner upstairs and then came down for some drinks. We would have had a perfect night there aside from the male bartender that was bald. He said his name was Ryan. One of the girls in my group wanted to go back to the hotel and me and my other friend wanted to stay because there was a drag show. We told the male bartender that we would be back because we were going to walk her to the hotel to make sure she made it safely. We went ahead and paid for the drinks we had already drank. (All three of us had one mixed drink that he brought to our table. The next was a shot that we went to the bar and got and brought back to our table. The last shot was the female bartender that brought it to us. So he literally took ONE singular order and brought it to our table at this point) We then walked our friend home and came directly back. We were gone for maybe 15 minutes. We got back and tried to get more drinks. My friend waited for at least 15 minutes trying to get a drink and was ignored. She started talking to a couple of other people at the bar and was trying to buy them a drink as well. Ryan, the bald tall bartender looked at my friend and told her "to be honest I'm not going to let you start a tab because you're a shitty tipper". He wouldn't even let her explain herself (though in my opinion she shouldn't have to) We told him we would be right back and we don't tip people until the end of the night because we tip one big amount. She got teary-eyed went ahead and left him a $30 tip. We didn't buy any more drinks the rest of the night because that was embarrassing and insanely rude. We tipped the people in the drag show so we spent our money on that instead and had a great time. If I was the owner of this business I would be getting rid of that guy as soon as possible. That's how you ruin your business. If that guy is more concerned about his tip than serving drinks, that place is going to go downhill quick. It's kind of unbelievable that a grown man had a little tantrum over only getting a few dollar tip when he only served us one singular drink at that point. Wild. And again, we were there to order many more drinks and stay the whole evening and then tip a generous amount at the end. I've been a server and I cannot imagine not serving because somebody only left you a few dollars when the night was JUST getting started. Also to be honest the lemon drop martini that he made me was ass. I'll post a picture of it though.

(They clearly saw me there; we made eye contact and the one guy wasn't even doing anything.) After about 10 to 15 minutes of waiting with no service, we were about to leave when a server finally came to our table. Since they were obviously busy and weren't keeping up with the crowd that night, we tried to order two drinks each so they could save a little of their time and we could relax without worrying about if a server was going to take our order again before the end of the week. The server very sharply said that he was NOT going to give us two drinks at a time, CERTAINLY not with drinks of this high alcohol content. We ordered one drink each, cashed out and bounced. The cocktail I got was fine; I could make a slightly worse version at home at a fraction of the price (or even two at once!). We we were told later by a friendlier Salemite at a bar with a better vibe that there is a Massachusetts state law that prohibits having two drinks at once at a bar. Fair enough. Had our server told us that, unfortunately, he wasn't allowed to give us two drinks at once -- instead of making us feel like idiots/degenerates for daring to ask -- we probably would have dropped a lot of vacation money there that night. Oh well; we had a great time at the other places we went.

I got a kick out of being handed my food by someone in a pig mask. Other reviews give you the low-down, so I'll discuss the food. The menu (only one item, or one item plus snacks) is posted by the intercom. On the evening I went, it was a pulled pork sandwich. I opted for the snacks option, and it came with root beer, Utz chips, and an oatmeal creme cookie. The sandwich was delicious. I got one for my dad too, and he loved it. The pork was well-seasoned and the bacon was thick, crisp, and tasty. The bun was also good. I feel like buns are often an afterthought with sandwiches, but not here. It was a high quality Kaiser roll, and it held up to the toppings (pork, bacon, slaw) well. The house-brand root beer was also good. If you find yourself in Salem by 5:15 p.m. on a Wednesday evening, get in line for Back Alley Bacon and enjoy.

She and much of my family really like this place and rave about it, but my overall first impression was definitely a mixed bag. My mom made the reservation for Saturday at 4:45pm in the dining room. We arrived a little early, so she showed me around the beautifully renovated building. When we checked in with someone, they redirected us to the bar area downstairs as they were holding a private event in the main dining area. Okay, not a big deal to us. However I could understand if someone else might get a little annoyed at being told they had to go to the bar area when they specifically asked for the dining room on their reservation. I have to say that I do love the downstairs bar area, it's classy and has a vintage speakeasy vibe. We were quickly greeted by one of the guys working the bar who was super nice and did a great job. For a drink I started with their version of an espresso martini, which was a good start to the food experience and gave me high hopes. They brought us out some popovers which to me were just okay. For an appetizer we got some buffalo chicken dip, which was quite delicious. For dinner my mom got a Caesar salad (which I tried a little bit of and thought was good) and a flatbread pizza that was on special. I decided to be a little bougie and went with the braised short ribs, and I regret to say that the dish fell flat for me. The short rib did come apart okay when I stuck my fork in it, but it was kind of chewy, bland and overall really didn't have much flavor. The menu also states that the short rib is served with broccolini (which is a milder, sweeter version of the green vegetable) but it came with regular plain broccoli instead, which I was also quite honestly disappointed by. With all that being said the polenta was my favorite thing on the plate. I'm a little conflicted. The place is beautiful and the staff is so nice. But with how much it was hyped up to me, I was a little let down. I'm kind of thinking that I should've went with another dish? I really want to truly love this place, so I'm sure I'll be back with family at some point to give them another chance.
