On Monday, Aug. 14 I went to When Pigs Fly about 2 PM with my two grand girls and wife. We went down to the beach behind the restaurant and had a great time swimming, sunning and hunting sea glass. ABout 5PM we walked up to the restaurant and HIT the JACKPOT! On Mondays, "little piglets" (under 13) eat free with each adult meal. AND... Birthdays eat free. It was my wife's birthday and we had two "little piglets" with us. I was (almost) embarrassed :-) Anyway, I got the full rack of ribs. Comes with 2 sides - I got Cowboy caviar (baked beans with pieces of BBQ pork and sausage and BBQ mac n cheese. They were both really good! The ribs were dry rubbed. (I am fussy about my ribs). They were very meaty but could have been done a little longer (however - I would rather this than done too much). The little piglet meals were amazing = you get an entree' choice,cut fries and a sundae! Regular price is only $3.99 to begin with!!! One piglet got a pulled pork sandwich - it was huge with texas toast. What a bargain even if you paid for it. The birthday girl got a terrific BBQ chicken salad. It had cranberries, walnuts, spring mix, fetta cheese, blue cheese and Guacamole - with the chicken. Best salad she ever had and she has had thousands of salads. There is an outdoor bar and music on the weekends. Terrific sunsets over the lake. I heartily recommend this place to everyone. The BBQ is not quite top notch (which is why I gave it 4 stars) but all the rest is great! BTW - all this cost me $30 - not including drinks. read more

We walked up to this place from the beach. Service was good, the owner was a super nice guy, and the kids had fun running around. The BBQ wasn't really smokey, but the brioche bread was a nice touch. The kids complained about the macaroni cheese but they are jerks and hate everything. One of the kids got a kids pulled pork sandwich and it was huge! Great value. I had a nice really nice salad- but would have preferred something like spring mix over iceberg lettuce. If we're in the area, we'd probably come back. read more

I have always talked highly and recommended When Pigs Fly until we stopped in the other day for dinner and drinks. We walk out back sit down at the bar just as we sit down bartender comes from behind bar sits down beside a customer eating and starts a conversation. Bartender sits there at least 5 minutes without any acknowledgement of us sitting there. When she goes back behind the bar another couple walks and she goes to them still no acknowledgement we were sitting there. I complain to owner I say it is Ridiculous that we sit there like that, owners response was that was my opinion. Service is always poor when we have been there but we went because of location. Told owner we would not be back his response GOOD. read more

Good food. Really, really lousy service. I mean awful. I went tonight with ten guests. We were seated immediately and the drinks came out promptly and correctly. It was all downhill from there. I received half of my meal when seven others got all of theirs. About 40 minutes later, after some incredible excuses, the other half came out along with the food for the other three people. One person received the wrong food in the first phase. Then the wrong food again. And then the right food the third time. This was long after the initial wave and second wave of food. I'd estimate that it took about an hour between the first entree service and the final sandwich came out right. Totally unacceptable and absolutely no apology or discount on the bill. Great lakeside views! Staff is friendly and the food is good, but slow. Be prepared for that. We had pulled pork, chicken and brisket sandwiches. The chicken was great, the pork had a few bits that were dry. The brisket was great tasting but easily half of it was impossible to eat, like brisket jerky. Literally, I'll eat here again when pigs fly. Terrible service, host was clueless, took 90 minutes to get our food. Chicken was dry, ribs were 95% fat. Kids macaroni and cheese and grilled cheese were made with nacho cheese.. waitress didn't tell us when our food was coming, didn't offer me a second drink, and finally had to walk up to the host to ask where our food was. Then waitress took almost 15 mins to ask us how our food was, and if we needed anything. I will say, my food was good. A year after visiting this funky joint on Barcelona Harbor, smack on Lake Erie, I was pretty amazed. I wasn't too kind in my original review about my first experience---two separate visits last year; the first, abysmal, yet the second, pretty good. Which left me confused, yet with hopes that this potential goldmine would strike gold. After all, the restaurant is on a great spot on the beach which features one of the most truly astounding sunsets I've ever seen in the world I've traveled, and it has a cool, laid-back beach vibe and a diverse menu and excellent presentation. If only service and the consistency of the food could be improved, I originally remarked, it would take me to BBQ heaven. Well, guess what? Pigs DO fly. The place has improved 100% and it makes me so happy to report this. I've been there twice already this week alone and have absolutely enjoyed all I've eaten there. Recommendations? Stick to the BBQ (I'm still not a fan of the brisket; it's not quality meat and just doesn't taste right.) The sandwiches are terrific. The wings are terrific. The sides are still a little iffy: last year I wasn't convinced about the freshness of the coleslaw and had some difficulty with the fried pickles, but they are much better than I had last year. Practice makes perfect---and it brings home the fact that what we think as great "junk" food is really hard to pull off. Could there be improved service? Of course. But there seems to be a team effort afoot and the wait staff is kind, courteous, and friendly. I'm still not sure what the interior design of the restaurant is trying to say; it looks a hot mess, to be honest. But if it's summer, why be inside? Grab a table on the patio, a few drinks, a couple of huge platters of BBQ, and enjoy. read more

This was without a doubt the worst dining experience of my life. My family of five (three young children) arrived around 7:15 after a long day on the road. We were hungry and ready for some barbecue! We were told it would be about a 30 minute wait, but we could wait down by the water. The view was beautiful and we didn't mind waiting while the kids enjoyed skipping rocks in the lake. After 45 minutes we checked to see if they were ready. There were several empty tables, but none had been bussed. The hostess (who became our waitress) walked over to a dirty table, brushed the crumbs off the table with her hand (great Covid protocol!) and told us we could sit there. Among the bbq sauce smears. So we sat, ordered drinks, nachos, and dinner. The nachos came a while later, with no plates, napkins, or silverware. Starving, we dug in with our hands. I poked around at other tables to find some forks and just found other people eating with their hands. We asked for silverware but got none. We pushed the nachos aside and waited, hoping the food would be better. The food came a while later. 4/5 meals were greasy, tasteless, and sub par, but edible. My meal was horrific. I ordered a chef salad which was said to come with fried chicken strips, hard boiled eggs, thousand island dressing... it was lettuce, tomatoes, and cold, soggy French fries with barbecue sauce dumped across it. I'm insulted that anyone would think this was even edible. I was told (by two waitresses) that the chef quit while making it, so this is all they had. They had no problem taking it off the bill. I feel very badly for the staff here. They are clearly undertrained, undersupported, and understaffed. But as much as I feel bad for them, if you like eating food, I'd highly recommend going anywhere else. Oh, and we did get our silverware, long after the meal came, and after requesting the bartender to bring us some. So essentially it was a 2+ hour dining out experience where I ate nothing. read more

Ordered Takeout last weekend. Great location, however, the food quality was severely lacking. The brisket looked like it was leftover from the previous day...completely overcooked, tough, and dry. The Ribs also looked like leftovers, the bark was just completely burnt, and rub was dusted on top. This place was a spectacular find! Its a hidden restaurant situated on Lake Erie. Ample room with a bar and a few tables when you first walk in. Back room with plenty of tables and an outdoor patio with bar and live music. Bob Seger music the night we were there. The restaurant is a chicken, pulled pork and ribs joint. My friends and I were just looking for coffee or a drink as we were heading home from a road trip. We ended up trying appetizers: the "Frickles"- Beer Battered Butter Pickle Chips Served with Chipotle Ranch. Oh my gosh yummy. Next was the Redneck Nachos. As the menu states, House made Tortilla Chips, Aged Cheddar Cheese Sauce, Diced Tomatoes, Sliced Black Olives, Spring Green Onion, Cheddar Jack Cheese, Jalapenos, BBQ Sauce Drizzle, Sour Cream. You can add chicken or pork. I thought BBQ sauce would be odd on nacho's but that was not the case. The sauce was sweet and delicious. Next item was Bo-Deans Fried Bacon Mac n Cheese. You receive two patties that look like crab cakes. Very good as well. We are going to bring our husbands back for the ribs. Service was excellent and staff was friendly making this a wonderful experience. The outdoor patio- A Fire pit for a chilly night and a board walk that leads down to the beach Also, a volleyball area. Great place to watch the sunset over the lake. read more

We were in midst of a wine tour and kept getting the same recommendation from everyone... you have to hit up When Pigs Fly.. so we had to. We got a nacho's app that was just "okay" we got meat on it and there wasn't a ton on there. The star of the show was the main course. We got a brisket and pulled chicken sandwiches that were fantastic. They also had a delicious BBQ sauce on them and some at the table as well. Hand-cut fries were a little like cardboard . This is the second chance I have given when pigs fly. I had high hopes from what people have said, but honestly, I am disappointed and disgusted. We ordered the platter with the 3 different meats and got the spare ribs as an add on. The meats we had gotten where very dry and over seasoned. The corn on the cob was either cooked to the point they we're mushy, or under cooked to the point it was hard as a rock. We had ordered the cowboys caviar and it was supposed to be BBQ beans with kabasi pieces, which happened to actually be cut up hot dogs. We were seated in the corner and seemed to be forgotten about. When the server did come back over to refill our drinks she filled the cups with the wrong drink. So we ended up drinking a mixture of our drinks together. (Coke and raspberry tea mixtures) Will say the frickles and the mac and cheese was decent but the rest was terrible, won't be returning, and definitely won't recommend to any one! Our first try there I had ordered a Carmel apple martini and there were fruit flies mixed in the the Carmel. The bartender seemed to not see the numerous flies suck around the rim, and in the drink it's self... No one could give an answer as too what was happening. Table next to us had 16 people, came in 30 min after us, paid and left before our food came. Had to beg for silver ware and plates. Lots of staff but no help. Cold flavorless bbq. Dry chicken. Corn fritters were the bee knees though, give credit where credit is due. Everything else is a dumpster fire. read more

To summarize: when our food was finally delivered (cold) we were not offered plates upon which to divide the BBQ for two and we had no silverware with which to eat it. When requested, the server said, "we are out of silverware, there isn't any clean," and left it at that. As if we were supposed to eat baked beans (very good) and sliced brisket (just ok) with our fingers! When we politely pointed this disconnect out to her, she went and found some and then (honest to goodness, no exaggeration) THREW it on the table! There were 4 servers on duty and never more than 4 tables in the entire dining room at any one time, yet our server was out of sight and nowhere to be found for ten, fifteen minutes at a time. We asked for water at the beginning of the evening and never even got that until our meal was half eaten. Just ridiculous. I was served a glass of sour wine but when she asked why I didn't drink it and was told it was close to vinegar, no offer of taking it off the bill. (To be clear- this is the second time I ate at this restaurant and I had a similar experience on both visits) Are you kidding me? The food is "good" the service is by far the worst I've ever experienced!! It's hard to talk about the quality of the food when there's son much to say about staff! Let's talk about "kids eat free on Monday!" That may be true but only after you argue about the hidden charges. My party was over charged more than $20 in "fees" and then forced to argue those charges. In one case the waitress told us that the kids drinks are supposed to be free but because they brought us a larger size, they had to charge us for the adult size. How about being charged $2 to switch the cheese on my cheeseburger to cheddar"? I'm ok with the up charge - if I'm told about it at the time I request it - not when I'm forced to argue it when the bill comes. Look...I can under standard that they may have some different ways of billing customers but I struggle with the way they don't communicate those charges and then argue with the customer when they question them. (And this is the second time I had this experience with this restaurant). I'd recommend you avoid this place because you never know what you're going to expect when the bill comes - and you may not want to feel like an asshole if you need to question a bunch of charges that you didn't know we're going to be there. read more

The atmosphere of this restaurant is great and it is beautiful inside, however needs some work with its staff and food. The waitress we had was not knowledgable at all, she took our order and basically never came back to check on us until we had to call a different waitress for help. We added ribs to our order and they were so dry and basically inedible, very disappointing. We also found a hair in our food which was a major turn off. At the end of our meal, our waitress was MIA again so we asked a different waitress to find us the manager. When I go here I definitely go for the setting and not for the service. When we got our food we asked for silverware and never got it. After another 20 minutes we flagged another waitress down to ask for a box to take our food because we never got to eat it since we didn't have silverware. She brought boxes and our check and our waitress still never came to get the check so we ended up having to go up front and wait another 20 minutes. The second time we came, we brought a guest with us. There was a 20 minute wait, which I could understand if they were packed, but they weren't. We saw several empty tables from the door and the bar was empty. As we waited in the bar, we were asked if we minded sitting there and we could get waited on faster. So we did. Well... My husband and I bought the Que for two. Definitely not worth the price. Like the first time, we had to ask for plates...and butter for the corn...no salt or pepper on table. The pulled pork (hunks) was dry, the sliced beef inedible. My guest asked for a milkshake for dessert. Took three waitresses and 20 minutes to get that! Had to ask for a straw and a spoon! So we wandered in to When Pigs Fly today, it was quiet, Jeff Beadle met us at the door. He is one of my favorite basketball referees and was very receptive to us and explained the menu to us as we sat down. We sat in the dining room and placed our orders, my son got a Cheesy Mac n Rib Grilled Cheese sandwich served on Texas Toast, he said it was incredible and ate every single bit of food on his plate. My wife ordered the My Boy Blue, without a bun, and enjoyed every bite of it. I ordered the Que for Two, with the beef brisket and the sweet potatoe fries, the brisket was perfectly seasoned but the sweet potato fries were a little to sweet for me with the cinnamon and sugar on it. I cut the sweetness with the bbq sauce which was a good addition. I am looking forward to stopping there this summer and enjoying the outside area and the view of the beach. It is a great dining experience and you should stop in and try it out. read more

Location is cool. The food is good. Dog friendly; outside, just like any restaurant. The waitress brought out ice water for the dogs. Very Cool! We always pick a corner away from people cause some people don't like or can be afraid of dogs. Totally cool with that and we try to respect that. The only problem I can see is that it seems the waitresses have to run a long ways to us outside which slows down service. Don't have the answer to fix that but kept them from getting 5 stars from me. Will go back again for sure! read more

If you like dry rub ribs, you will like this place. You can't beat the atmosphere! What's not to like about sitting outside looking out at the lake! Despite what other reviews said about the service, we had no problems. The food was okay. The ribs were cooked perfect in my opinion. They were in-between having a little tooth to them and falling off the bone. I am not a fan of dry rub. I feel that there was too much rub on the ribs and it masks the taste of the meat. We also had the quesadillas. I wish whoever put them together took the time to distribute the meat evenly. Literally half of the quesadilla had no meat in it, just cheese and bbq sauce. You could back off the bbq sauce and have your guest add it at the table. The brisket was very tasty! read more

We went to this restaurant last night and we're very disappointed. We are from Texas and nothing about this restaurant was true Texas BBQ. The food was awful the brisket not even cooked in a smoker!! There was no smoker rings on the so called " brisket" . Plus the brisket had very little taste. Everything is on Texas toast and the corn bread that came with the meat meals was awful!! Unable to eat most of the dishes. Which took a good 45 min. to an hour to come out of the kitchen. The waitress was pleasant but not attentive at all. Over all the worst BBQ place we have ever visited. Which is sad because the place was very scenic. BTW to the owner , real Texas BBQ is smoked with Mesquite , Oak and/ or Pecan wood!!!!!! read more
