We just felt like we were visiting a friend's place; that's the best way I can describe Whippletree Winery. You know their wine is good when you head home with five bottles after your tasting! We loved everything about this winery. We stumbled upon it during our trip to Center Harbor, and wow -- I can't wait to return. As soon as we got off the car, we were welcomed by the staff, who invited us in and asked where we were visiting from. They were so friendly! We opted to sit outside due to the nice weather and had the most pleasant afternoon doing their $15 tasting, which included 5 of their wines. You get to pick any of their wines for the tasting, even the premium ones! They do it all -- reds and whites and roses and everything else in between. Their fruit wines were some of the best we've ever had. Our server, whose name I wish I had gotten, treated us like family. This place is just incredible. Had the best afternoon here with some friends. Their tasting room is smaller but has some tables and a bar. The owners are very passionate about their wine and it shows in their delicious varieties! They have so many to choose from! My faves were: Villa grande, mountain bear, perfect table. I even bought a bottle for a Christmas gift and everyone else bought at least 2 bottles! What a spectacular local winery. Truth be told when we were first nearing the location we were quite skeptical....then when the sign directed us into what looked like someone's home we questioned the decision altogether. Boy are we glad we stayed. Everyone from the staff to other guests were incredibly pleasant and the wines were remarkably good! We are not usually fans of non-grape based fruit wines but many of their non-grape varieties were outstanding! So glad we have such a gem close by. While headed home at the end of our summer visit to the area we saw a "winery" sign with an arrow. We made a note to check out out the next time we were up here and finally got the opportunity. It was very busy as there were two different local events and "tours" going on while we were there. It was quite chaotic and if it wasn't for that this may have been a four star review. They were extremely overwhelmed by the amount of people that were there. It was good for them as a newer business to be able to get the word out, but frustrating if you weren't part of one of the tours and wanted to do a tasting. Everyone there was really nice though. It's a bit out of the way on wooded road and up a long driveway. It's a really cute little spot inside and has a welcoming feel. This is going to sound a bit snobby, but in most cases you have to lower your tasting expectations if you are a red wine lover going to a New England winery. The varietals that produce a fuller-bodied red just can't be grown out here. Whippletree does have a wide variety of wines and I'm happy to say some pretty good heavier reds. I do think they cater more to the sweet wine crowd, but this red wine lover was satisfied. We walked out with a few bottles of Cranberry Shiraz, which we'll pour on Thanksgiving and bottle of Villa Red. I will definitely visit again and expect it to be a quieter, more laid back tasting at which point they will get another star. It's worth a stop if you are in the area. read more

Found this hidden gem last weekend. Weather was great do we say outside. Had a blast with other people there. Lauren the owner and wine maker was fantastic!! Made recommendations for us to try. I usually drink white but ended up choosing more reds. Liked all!! You get 5 generous samples for $ 6.99! Plus let's you sample others too. Brought a different friend this weekend and she too loved everything!!! Was damp dreary day and we sat inside. Great way to spend the afternoon!! I was there last week with my girlfriend after seeing there sign on Rt 16. I thought we would stop in. We had a great time meeting the owner and sampling wines. All were good, some were better. So we decided to buy some wine to take home with us. The wine I purchased was DEFINITELY not the wine a tasted. The wine a tasted was a average $15 bottle of wine you buy at package store. The wine I purchased was a poor " home made wine". I have been making wine myself for many years and know the difference. I recommend enjoying the wine tasting, but buyer beware. We heard about this winery while we were at the Tamworth Farmers Market and glad we stopped by. It's quaint and tucked away in the woods off the beaten path but close enough to the main road to make it an easy stop. We were immediately greeted and had a seat on the porch. The wine list was extensive and featured classic wines as well as creative blends and fruit forward wines. We ended up buying a mixed case to bring home Connecticut.
