I never had a macaron prior to trying one from Whisk, however, I thought the fluffer-nutter flavor was unique and yummy. The size was also larger than expected and fun to eat. I was happy to discover that nearly all of the macarons are gluten-free, so I was able to enjoy nearly any flavor - a rarity in a pastry shop. If you are the type of person that thinks Hershey's chocolate is just as good as any other chocolate, and bread is just a vehicle for deli meat, then you won't appreciate Whisk. If you appreciate a baked yummy made by someone who actually knows what they are doing and didn't skimp in the butter, then this place is a must. RVA is a foodie town, no doubt, but Whisk is the best bakery around. If we go to RVA, we don't leave until we've brought back a bunch of nummies for the road. Coffee is also good, but you can get that anywhere. My son is addicted to the Kouign Ammans.....I'm no expert but I think they know how to make these. I like the macarons that are as big as your face and the blondies. They have frozen chocolate chip cookies to go which are a good price for huge yummy chunkier cookies that you can pop in the oven. For muffins, I like the melt in your mouth coffee cake ones. I've never tried their cakes since I'm not a local, but if I were, this would be my birthday cake go to. Also, they have sandwiches on chewy baguettes. Overall not a huge selection, but great taste. And don't miss the Nina Simone mural on the outside wall.... it's pretty damn epic. read more

Finally made it to Whisk after drooling over their photos on Instagram for quite some time. What peaked my interest mostly was the ice cream macaron sandwiches. However, when I got there, I was distracted by other things! First, the inside is quaint. They are making the most of the space they have, but it was busy so I was able to snag a table right before they were all gone. I did see a sign about an outdoor patio, which I wish I had checked out, but with some rain on and off, I just sat indoors. So, I placed my order for a butter croissant, salted caramel peanut macaron (caramel & peanut...yes, please!) and a small black coffee. Yes, I'll take all the carbs :) When my name was called for my order, well Erin actually, minor details lol... I grabbed it and took my seat. I dug into the croissant first since it was nice and warm. It was super flaky and huge! After a few savory bites, I had to try this macaron. It was so delish! There were other flavors that I wanted to try as well, but definitely glad I picked this one. After I finished, I placed my dishes in the bin that's located where the napkins, utensils, etc. are. Spring is finally here, which means it's time to venture the city to find some good iced coffee. Okay maybe not that. But I had a strong craving for coffee and some type of dessert. I've had my eye on Whisk for a second now and had a chance to sit down and try what they got. Very clean, small space, lots of light (it's on the corner of Main and 21st Street). Fairly busy on a Saturday afternoon! We decided to eat in, a few VCU students also took the change of scenery to sit and do work (that convinced us to stay). Macaroons! Even though I didn't get one, they look delicious, I suggest you take a sit and try a macaroon and a latte. We got a Campfire cookie, double chocolate brownie and two iced coffees (it's hour outside so we passed on a warm latte). The Campfire has great mouthfeel, it kind of melts in your mouth. It's soft, fluffy, right amount of chocolate, with a marshmallow filling. The double chocolate brownie, man, probably should have eaten this by itself because it's hella sweet. It has a chocolate fudge on top with chocolate shavings on one half. Then a slight crisp at the bottom of the brownie. It's great, but not with an iced coffee (oops). Tasted fresh, not completely overpowering when you eat it slow. The coffee was good, of course we had to fix it up how we like, cream, sugar for days. But I feel like we should have tried a latte or something, I feel like those get a bit more love than say an iced coffee. Since it's in walking distance, we shall be back. Whisk is definitely one of my favorite places in RVA. All the coffee drinks I've had here are good. They also have housemade syrups to customize your drinks. I love that they have honey lavender syrup, as lavender lattes are probably my favorite drink to order at any coffee shop or cafe. I also really like their iced coffee. My favorite thing about Whisk has to be their macarons. They're seriously so yummy. They're perfectly crisp on the outside and chewy on the inside. The filling is also not too sweet. The flavors I tried most recently were buttered rum and raspberry & rosewater. I actually really liked the buttered rum. The flavor reminded me a bit of butterbeer. Raspberry & rosewater is probably my favorite flavor macaron that they have. It's sweet and fruity with a subtle rose taste. After months of living vicariously through Instagram posts, I finally got to try their ice cream macaron for myself. Totally worth the hype! I can definitely see why they run out so quickly. The texture of the shell was still good, it wasn't overly frozen to the point of being crunchy and hard (I've had that happen to me when trying ice cream macarons before and it was honestly one of the most disappointing experiences ever.) I have absolutely fallen in love with this little coffee shop. My husband and I have stopped in on several occasions and are please with the COVID precautions that are in place, including the mask requirement. The staff has always been very friendly and willing to answer any questions and provide recommendations. The french bun and blueberry muffin were my favorites until I tried the raspberry cream cheese muffin which is absolutely delicious!! I love a dirty chi a Whisk knocks it out the park with the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. Today I tried their season drink a "coco moco" which was also a yummy version of an iced coconut mocha. Time for an update! They now have free wifi! Yay. That, and it seems like their offerings are getting better and better each day. When I came last week, it was still during Lent and I gave up sweets. So, sadly, I couldn't try a macaron. I still maintain that their patio is one of the best kept secrets in Richmond. I do wish that there was a way to access it without having to go outside and walk around, but that's just a minor detail. This is a MUST TRY bakery that anyone who lives in RVA or is just passing through RVA, need to try. I've been here twice and they both have been a wonderful experience. I love the display that they have to present their baking goods. I love following them on their Instagram and seeing their Macaroon Macs. I heard about this place through Yelp and finally made my first trip downtown specifically for this bakery. The pictures are exactly what you expect (maybe more). I was hardcore craving for some baked goods and on a search for some mouthwatering macaroons. (Which I ended up buying $30-40 worth of baked goods. BUT, keep in mind...I was also getting some of these goodies for some coworkers too. I just couldn't pass on sharing this type of love in an insurance office. haha) So...for my second trip here, was actually a spontaneous decision made by my husband after our double date at "Shake and Toss" (a seafood lover's spot btw). We ended up getting the pistachio rosewater macaron, an oatmeal sandwich, and their feature macaron mac. Everything that I just listed was really delish. I had the oatmeal cookie before, and i love how soft it was when I took the first bite. The cream in the middle is made perfectly and probably the best oatmeal cookie I've had from a bakery. The macarons are wonderful, but my most favorite is their Macaron Macs. Those are the fantastic ice cream sandwiches that they have featured in their Instagram. You just HAVE TO try one. I will admit that I will get around to trying out their other baking goodies, especially their croissants. They look so fresh and flaky...my kind of croissant. So as a stated in my check in comment, I had heard mixed reviews of what I had expected to be a "French" Bakery. I would say that the Yelp average was spot on! I tried the Bacon Cheddar Croissant bread pudding. It was served in its original baking ramekin, warmed to order. Done well, bacon & Cheddar flavors were well present but needed some seasoning, cracked pepper would have boosted the flavor profile and elevated the total experience. 4.5 My companion had the Strawberry Nutella Croissant. This came at room temperature, pre assembled with Nutella spread and sliced strawberries. She felt it would have been much better had the Croissant been warmed and then made to order, rather than prepped in advance for quick service. 4.0 Although not on the menu, I asked if they could make a "Red Eye" to which they agreed. This turned out to be the most disappointing element of or experience. Either the person made made it, didn't know that a Red Eye is regular coffee with an added shot of espresso, or there use some very low end coffee. THE CHOCOLATE HAZELNUT BABKA! In four words, it's pretty much why you need to stop in and get a whiff of buttery, baked, golden brown and deliciousness and a peek at the other products Whisk has in store for your sweet (or savory) tooth! I stopped in here with Kristine M. on a visit to nearby downtown Richmond after seeing pictures and reviews of their assortment of macarons and their Bacon Cheddar Bread Pudding. On our first visit we bought an assortment of their pastries to try. Kouign Amann (pronounced queen ah-mahn) which is a sweet, buttery, puff pastry; Coconut Lime Macaron, Strawberry Lemonade Macaron, Bacon Cheddar Bread Pudding, and of course the Chocolate Hazelnut Babka. If you look at my pictures, all of the portions are a good size, especially the macarons which are bigger than the standard fare at most bakeries. The subtle crunch from the exterior of the cookies balanced by that signature chew combined with the creamy and flavorful filling inside made for an eye opening to eye closing macaron experience on this day. The Bacon Cheddar Bread Pudding we shared and was very flavorful. The only suggestion I could make for it to be better would be to have it more custard like as it was more dry even after being warmed up. As for... THE CHOCOLATE HAZELNUT BABKA! Man what a versatile piece of pastry magic this thing is and it's pretty dense too! The loaf is topped with a crumb topping and large chocolate chips and the interior is filled with a swirl of chocolate hazelnut awesomeness and REAL hazelnuts to amplify the bread eating experience to the nth degree! I've eaten slices of it toasted, plain, but my favorite has to be prepared French Toast style. If you want an eyes rolling in the back of your head experience just google a simple french toast recipe and substitute this for your bread, cut up a few strawberries and get your Emeril on by BAMMING it all over with some powdered sugar. #gamechanger When you drive by E Main St. you pretty much can't miss the big mural outside with the logo. My fiancé and I have been coming to Whisk for about a year now. It's certainly tough to find a decent macaron in Richmond, which is 95% of the reason we've been coming this long. The pastries (including the macarons) are inventive and flavorful. The macarons are certainly large (about the diameter of a hockey puck), which is great if you find a flavor you like, but if you stumble upon a dud, you've got four more bites to go. I much prefer the more traditionally-sized macarons that are closer to a fifty-cent piece. It allows you to try a bunch of flavors, without breaking the bank (or your belly). That notwithstanding, they are usually pretty tasty and the constant rotation of flavors means you aren't going to get bored with their offerings. Unfortunately, that's where the positivity ends for Whisk. The handmade beverages have all fallen well short of expectations. The lattes taste flat, and the iced coffee is weak and watery. As I stood in line today, I was watching the barista make a latte, and it was clear she either didn't know what she was doing or she simply didn't care. I watched espresso shots die in latte mugs for a couple minutes before having milk poured in to complete the beverage. Espresso should be integrated with milk within seconds of being pulled, lest they oxidize and turn bitter. I find it hard to believe that the barista didn't know this, and it's a shame that she ignored it and continued to complete the drink. The barista's apathy was sadly evident in all the employees we interacted with today. When it was our turn to order, we waited at the register for a couple minutes before we were helped. When she finally arrived, the cashier was brusque and unfriendly, not greeting us or even asking us what we'd like, but instead staring at us expectantly, waiting for our order. Her attention toward us was interrupted a few times as she would shout out other customers' completed orders without so much as an "excuse me" or even a "be right back", but interrupting me mid-sentence to yell a name and an order, set the plate on the counter, and then proceed to ignore the customer picking up their food, even when it was clear that some customers were confused as to whose sandwich was whose. We all have bad days, I get that. Unfortunately, the terrible service here appears to have become part of the culture and is now the norm, not the exception. If you don't like your job, go find somewhere else to work. It's sad that a shop that has such potential is dragged down by mediocre, entitled, lazy employees. I hope that there's some rapid employee turnover, and soon. Good pastries brought me in and kept me coming back this long, but the terrible service will unfortunately keep me (and likely others) away moving forward. read more
