We came here for brunch on Father's Day... Of course we ordered the Bottomless Mimosas! I had the WJ Breakfast which consisted of Scrambled eggs w/cheese bacon, sausage potatoes and a biscuit. I had been to Whiskey Jax on one other occasion and missed the brunch menu and was so sad about that. I don't even remember what I had to eat. That might also be because I was on a date with a new love interest and I wasn't really looking at the menu all that much, but rather, the roses he just gave me. Well that love interest is now close to being my hubby, and he wanted to take his gal to brunch. Because I love brunch! We were seated right away and then had a server come take drink orders. A Bloody Mary is a no brainer for me, sometimes even if it's not brunch time, he went with coffee. After that we sat there...talking and not really bothered however noticing that we had not been checked on and our beverages had not landed.  It was so long that one of the other staff members asked if we had been helped and said he noticed the napkins on the table but no water or silverware and thought we had seated ourselves rather than wait to be taken to a table. The drinks did finally arrive and we went ahead to order our food right away. To start were the Fried Green Tomatoes, because it's one of my absolute fave foods, and I couldn't remember if when I had them here before, were they good or not?  I then went with the WJ breakfast, which consisted of 2 eggs any way you'd like them, sausage patties, bacon, and then some options come into play.  You can choose between parmesan grits or home fries (I had home fries) and then also the bread you choose from a dew different things, I had a buttermilk biscuit and added a bowl of gravy to go with that. I thought about having the chicken and waffles, and I am a huge lover of shrimp and grits; so potentially these would be choices for a next time. My Favorite Beard decided on the cheesesteak omelet, and asked for the mushrooms and onions to be removed. This came with the choiceygvg of a side, he went with the home fries. The food didn't take that long for it to be on the table and it was piping hot. I was impressed with the quality and texture of my eggs, but he did not think that his were cooked enough and asked for them to be cooked a little longer.  This is where things went downhill for him.  His food never returned. His *entire* breakfast. I gave him some bites of my food to include the home fries cause they were hard, dry and flavorless to me but he seemed to like them a lot. I did really enjoy the biscuit and gravy, the meats were pretty good, and like I said there was something about those scrambled eggs that seemed like perfection to me. The fried green tomatoes might be something that I skip on another visit. They weren't BAD, but I think maybe there was too much batter, or the batter wasn't seasoned right...something wasn't amazing.  When he had drank all his coffee and no refill was offered, when my bloody was nothing but a dry glass with some veggies in the bottom, and I had eaten my meal, it was then that the original server came back and apologized about being quite absent.  She wasn't the person that brought my food, and she hadn't been back to know that his meal was taken back to the kitchen.  When she gave us the check, is when he asked if his food was just thrown out, since he didn't eat more than two bites of it, and we were obviously paying for it. He did say that the beef tips had good flavor. When the box was brought back to the table , the side of home fries was no longer there, it looked like they took his omelet, sliced off the portion that maybe had been a bit runny, and put it in a box. It wasn't warm, the cheese was not melted, and again he had no home fries, so ..hungry Beard.  There are enough things on the different menu's for me to want to come back and try again, but I can't say the same for him. read more

Whisky Jax is a 1/2 mile from where I live. I've come here frequently. We usually come during happy hour or at night when they have live music. We usually sit at the bar and the service is always great and the bartenders are always friendly. The place is very dark. I would not recommend it on a beautiful sunny afternoon unless you are trying to escape the sun. It almost feels too dark and I wish they would add some more windows. At night I do enjoy the ambience, they have great live music. The avocado fries are amazing. The bangin shrimp is also quite good. My absolute favorite item on the menu has to be their Fried Chicken N Grits. I usually get this every time I come but recently I started switching it up to try new things. I've had great meals and other times not so great meals. The burgers are also equally as good. They have some really crazy burgers on the menu with huge flavor all of which are very tasty. One item that needs work are the wings. They just can't seem to cook a wing. Every single time I've ordered wings they are always undercooked! I ALWAYS order them well done and despite asking for this they are always soggy and the big wings are still pink inside. They really need to improve this. The beer selection is pretty decent and they do a happy hour. Their cocktail menu is pretty standard. The whisky selection is excellent! We had Fried Green Tomatoes for an app. They were well fried and seasoned to my liking. I tried the Inside Job cocktail but the bitters were a little strong for my palette. Still good. For dinner I had Korean BBQ brisket, my wife had Mac and cheese and banging shrimp. Both meals were excellent. For dessert we had pineapple coconut layer cake. The flood was excellent. The atmosphere was nice with plenty of space between tables. They do karaoke and brunch. The only reason we didn't rate higher was: 1. We waited for a bit to be seated. 2. And for the 3 Wood Mushroom burger was overcooked (asked for medium rare got medium well) and seemed to be very stingy with the mushrooms. I visited Whiskey Jax with a few girlfriends while on vacation. There was a live band playing inside the restaurant which my friends and I enjoyed but that might not be everyone's scene, especially if you're looking to talk/catch up with your dinner guests. We shared the fried green tomatoes with goat cheese and the whiskey blue chips. The fried green tomatoes were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside! Goat cheese was the perfect topping. The whiskey blue chips are crispy potato chips loaded with blue cheese, bacon and balsamic -SO GOOD. I would recommend the whiskey blue chips for sure! For my entree I had the tuna poke tacos. Honestly they were just okay. With such a large menu I would try something else. The burger that my friend ordered looked much better. Both indoor and outdoor seating! read more

Yeehaw! A country bar with live music. I was looking for a place to go one evening and I searched yelp and this bar popped up. As I walked up to the door, the music was almost deafening, so I knew I had to go in. It took a while to be seated but the hostess sat me close to the bar on a high top. I recently attended a dinner at this really cool new gastropub spot off of Baymeadows called Whiskey Jax. There we got to meet Chef "Red" Goens who had a long resume of wonderful restaurants he's worked in. With that being said, I knew we'd be in for a treat! With a name like Whiskey Jax, I knew there had to be something special about whiskey at this restaurant and we found out that they carry 120 different ones!!! We tried two of their specialty drinks (whose names I can't recall) including the Raspberry concoction which reminded me of a margarita, and this Bourbon concoction which was good but WAY too strong for my tastebuds. Now on to the food! My favorite part! Course #1 Bold City Beer Cheese Soup- What I loved most about this soup was that it was topped with puff corn! I learned that this is something that's common in the upper mid-west. It definitely had the malt flavor that accompanied the cheese nicely. Course # 2 Avacado Fries: This was my FAV dish of the evening! I never would've thought that this would be something I'd enjoy but I was pleasantly surprised. The avacado is breaded in a seasoned cornflake panko and finished with a cilantro creme fraiche, citrus chili sauce, and fresh lime. Make sure you ask for the "Nasty Sauce", the chef's special hot sauce. It complimented the fries perfectly and is OH SO GOOD! Course # 3 Seared Tuna: So this was my first time trying seared tuna, believe it or not. I've just never been excited about food that isn't "well-done". It wasn't bad. It was made with Togarashi, a Japanese 7 spice and paired with a delicious cucumber slaw and wakame salad that was marinated in a whiskey brine! Mmmmm! Course # 4 Truffled Ribeye: There is nothing like a good ole, tender piece of beef! It's even better when it's a Grass fed 14oz Ribeye grilled and topped with house made truffle butter. I enjoyed the steak with some of the "Nasty Sauce" I had left over from my avacado fries. It was a nice mix! To go with the steak was a delicious parmesan cheese risotto made with spinach and sun-dried tomato. I really enjoyed this course. Course #5 Fireball Apple Cobbler: This was a nice twist on the classic Apple Pie a la mode! The ball you see here was infused apple cobbler topped with cinnamon toast crunch fried ice cream!!! I know right! Chef says it's their best selling dessert. I've never had fried ice cream before so it was nice to finally try it! I enjoyed my visit to Whiskey Jax! the service was great and they had live music which is always a plus! One more thing you may like is that they are open until 2am daily! So if you're having one of those late nights and want something wholesome to eat, make your way to Whiskey Jax! I am also looking forward to the bottling of the "Nasty Sauce"! I had this spot book marked, cause I read some reviews on here about it, it looked good so made our way there on a Sat. night. It is decorated nicely, dimly lit, with a cool atmosphere, part bar/part restaurant. They have a stage area for live music (every night of the week except Sunday we were told) Now to the food: we started with a few beers the Pumpkin cider was delish! Very sweet and full of spice and refreshing! This is just a seasonal brew they serving right now. The apps we got were the Bangin Shrimp and fried avacado..... the shrimp were good, you have prob tried these before at other places but these were in a little bit of sweeter sauce and had tail on. Now to the Avacado fries, we got these out of sheer curiosity...i love avacado, but it needs seasoning on it......these kinda tasted like fries bits of nothing...lol.....avacado itself just doesnt have much taste, but with the two different types of dipping sauce it was good, fried anything is good! For entree's: We got Bourbon Salmon-great flavor, loved the veggies on the side, Short Ribs-a mans dish, fatty yummy beef, and Corned Beef-love corned beef with cabbage and potatoes, great flavor......everything was good, we all enjoyed our dishes, but it seemed they were a bit over cooked, particularly the Salmon. So I decided to give this place a second chance because after my previous negative review the owner, Tom had reached out to try to make things right. They really did. First off the food was wayyy better than before. Good quality, well seasoned burgers that are well cooked and the flavors were spot on. I had the Martha's Summertime Blues Burger with bacon, bleu cheese fondue and arugula. It's served on a pretzel bun and was cooked to a perfect medium rare. The fries were hot, fresh and cooked to a perfect crispness, but not over cooked like last time. My wife had the shrimp tacos with mango salsa and absolutely loved them, she also had to get the fantastic Parmesan grits that was the standout from our last visit again too. Seriously, what a difference another visit made in turning me from an unhappy customer to one who'd happily come back again. Tom took care of us and made sure that things went way better this time. My first visit to Whiskey Jax was...unremarkable? The setup was nice, the vibe/service was good but I just wasn't blown away by the food. I ordered the WJ burger ( Mixed greens, tomatoes, red onions, whiskey pickles, peppercorn aoli, and cheddar cheese served on a brioche bun) without the cheese so maybe I just ordered wrong? The burger wasn't bad, it just wasn't especially impressive. Last week I visited for the second time and had a great experience. We tried quite a few items and my verdict on my first visit is that I absolutely ordered wrong the first time. We started with the bold city beer cheese soup and it was the best beer cheese soup I've had. Typically beer cheese soup is way too heavy and rich for my tastes but this version is on the lighter side and perfectly flavored. And how can you go wrong with a soup topped with Parmesan popcorn?! Easily one of my favorites of the night. My other favorite was the avocado fries. The breading was light and didn't overpower the avocado at all. The sauces it was served with are the perfect compliment. This is on the menu as an appetizer but I'd be happy to have it for a meal (it's also on both their happy hour and late night menus). We also had the seared tuna (again, an appetizer that I would happily order as an entree). The seasoning wasn't my favorite but I enjoyed it. We also tried a newer menu item, the truffle ribeye with truffle butter, spinach, sun dried tomato, Parmesan risotto (from their Facebook so the menu description might be a little different). I was so full by this time I only managed a few bites but the seasoning was great. I really enjoyed the risotto (one of those things I tend to hesitate to order since a lot of places can't pull it off). Very tasty, great flavor and nicely cooked.To finish things off we had the Fireball apple cobbler. I have a weird thing about cooked fruit/fruit as dessert so the cobbler part wasn't for me but the fried ice cream on top was fantastic. I love that Whiskey Jax is open so late (2 a.m. every night) and has so many happy hour, late night, ladies' night, etc. deals. They have live music 6 night s a week, too. First things first, if I could give this place more stars I would. I came here for brunch this morning to celebrate a girl friends birthday. I've been here before but never for brunch, and I'm glad I did. There's this breakfast cafe in Orlando called Keke's Breakfast Cafe, and I've been looking for over a year to find a place similar to Keke's in Jacksonville. I've been to places like Broken Egg, Mimi's Cafe, and Metro Diner thinking that today will be the day I find the perfect Eggs Benedict, but no luck at all. Finally, my luck changed when I came to Whiskey Jax this morning. The Eggs Benedict was cooked to perfection; the English muffin was toasted just right, the Canadian ham was delightful and the poached eggs were on point. I also ordered the Elvis cakes; which was Pancakes with chocolate, bacon and bananas. Those was mouth watering pancakes. I'm a Jersey girl, so I've never been a grits fan. My fiancé ordered the Shrimp and Grits. Oh my god! It was simply heavenly. The texture of the grits was something I've never experienced with grits before. When I think of grits, I think of runny oatmeal and i think that's why I've never liked it before. It almost had a mashed potato consistency. Mmmm, my mouth is just watering just trying to explain it LOL Overall, my experience here was awesome. I will definitely be back for more. Came here for an FSU gamewatching party. Drinks were really cheap which is always a plus! We were told it might take hours to get a table but really only had to wait 20 minutes and we had a prime location inside to watch the game. Only downside to watching games here is the TV's aren't that big. I love wings and my friends and I got 40, 4 different flavors. The best by far was the datil pepper, the one I liked the least was the buffalo. I think it's called bourbon buffalo, or something that sounds fancy but it's basically just buffalo which I'm not a huge fan of. Also got the mozzarella sticks, which were good, and the truffle fries which were decent. read more

First time at WJ. Went for Saturday brunch and $10 bottomless mimosas. They didn't disappoint with those mimosas. My glass never went empty through our entire visit. Service was really great. My shrimp and grits were pretty good. Not the best I've ever had but enjoyable. Maybe a little heavy on the gravy/sauce though. My husband and daughter each had the French toast (daughter added bananas and strawberries). She loved it, he thought it was good but not awesome. Our service and the bottomless mimosas are probably the reason for the four stars. Without those, I'd probably give three. read more

Very unassuming gastro pub with a great menu and decent service would be my description. The blue cheese balsamic chips were out of this world. I'm a blue and balsamic fiend so that made me happy. The hottest wing option left me a little underwhelmed, despite the zaftig portion. The ranch and blue cheese sauces left me wanting more they were so tasty. I had the chicken pear Brie sandwich with fries and my dining partner had the chefs burger which I think had an over easy egg, bacon tomato jam, bacon and arugula with Brie. Tbh, the toppings sounded good in theory but weren't executed harmoniously as they could be. Huge chunks of Brie (with rind/casing) that didn't melt made the grilled chicken kind of wet and cold like the pears. I mean a few thinner pieces might have helped pull it off. The fries were hand cut or cut in house and tasted pretty greasy and lacked seasoning. Double fried, maybe? I hate complaining but the apple cobbler desserts saving grace was the boozy flavor. The crumble was very oily and grainy unfortunately. I hate to complain in reviews but hope to try and re-visit to give it another go. Was here with a friend on a Friday night. We loved the atmosphere as soon as we walked in. There was live music and he was great. The waitress was very nice and knowledgeable of the menu. I can't recall of the exact name of my dish but it was Kentucky pork chop and my friend had a burger. The food was absolutely delicious. The pork chop had some sweet and crispy on the outside that just melts in your mouth. The burger was juicy. We expected it to be dry because she asked for medium well, but we were wrong. Last night we made an online reservation for 4and we meeting family who were driving in from Savannah. We were driving in from New Smyrna Beach. We arrived at 7:15. Reservation was 7:30. There was no reservation even though we had a confirmation email. A server spoke to us after a few minutes and told us she would seat us shortly. Another 15 minutes and we flagged the same server to let her know we were still waiting. We were placed at a high top. We ordered tea to drink. It was spoiled. Our guests arrived and ordered tea. They were told the restaurant was out of tea. I guess with a restaurant full of people on game night, they weren't going to serve this popular southern beverage the rest of the evening. Appetizers were served without appetizer plates. Entrees were ordered, including 2 filets. The server waited until the meals were ready to come out and stopped by the table to ask if the manager had been over. We replied, no. She advised they had no filets. She served our guests their burgers while she took a new order to replace the filets. Our guests didn't want to eat until all food was served so they ate cold meals. My Velvet Rooster entree did not include the cinnamon whiskey poached pears. There were 5 kids (3-6 yrs old) running all around the restaurant. The trivia host was a fill in. Server had to be stopped or flagged down for refills. No manager in sight. Overall a big disappointment. We were polite and tipped well in spite of the issues. I know these are the times we are living in, but we dine at restaurants every day that are experiencing staffing issues. This has been by far the worst experience throughout the pandemic. read more

Getting there going east on Baymeadows was weird, thanks Google Maps, but I made it there. We go in and were promptly greeted by Reed, the manager (?). He held the door open for us and just made us feel welcome. The place wasn't that busy as we were promptly seated in a booth under a giant mirror on the far left. The decor said "Cool Western-style bar" with a mini stage for live music. I wonder if they have line dancing there. The table arrangement was set up weird in front of the "stage" but then it was re-arranged as a Christmas party was filing in. Thursday night is Ladies Night unbeknownst to us. $3 House brand cocktails and wine and $5 select appetizers. Awesome sauce! Our waitress Sunshine was good, she had mentioned that some other people had came in based on Yelp and that she didn't know that Yelp was such a far reaching community. So far reaching in fact, my friend and I met another Yelper who was seated at the bar. We decided to just get appetizers as we weren't hungry enough for entrees. They had a new one, the Chef's Cheese Platter. Sunshine said they just added it to the menu and it was $10 on Ladies Night so we shared it. It had port wine cheese, fontina (I believe)?, a brie wheel with baked apples, melon balls, grapes, and crostini. That was pretty good and I hope it's an item that stays on the menu, but I would prefer that the grapes be seedless though as I felt that I kept biting little pebbles. Next was the Avocado Fries which were excellent! The cilantro lime crème fraîche to dip them in was the icing on the cake. The habanero-type sauce? Not so much. Lastly, we tried the Seared Tuna. This was a huge disappointment. We had thick pieces of tuna but it wasn't seared enough for us. Maybe if the pieces were thinner and seared longer but would have been better. The avocado aoli with the sriracha chili sauce dabs helped the taste. The Wakame salad tasted like it was missing something though I'm not sure what. Really delicious food, excellent service, and a great value for the price! Hubs and I had the WJ Mac as an appetizer which was a solid, satisfying Mac and cheese. It had the creaminess I love and the bacon flavor really came through in the cheese sauce! Hubs had the corn beef and cabbage which was a huge portion of meat that was so tender and flavorful. I've been here several times now and really enjoy the atmosphere here. The food is great and the drinks are made even better. They have live music here a lot of evening's as well. We haven't had any issues with service so far either. If you're looking for an extensive whiskey list, stop here and check it out. You won't be disappointed. read more

Staying in a nearby hotel for a few weeks and happened across this place by accident. Didn't seem like much as I walked to the door but once inside I was greeted by friendly staff and a warm atmosphere. Sat at the bar my first visit and had a burger and a beer. I was a little skeptical ordering what looked like a fairly fancy burger at a bar but I was pleasantly surprised. Ordered the Dirty South and had nothing but positive thoughts dancing around in my mouth. I enjoyed my meal so much I brought someone else from my class the next day. This time we sat at a booth and I ordered the crab crusted mahi. It was a tad salty at first, though I may have just gotten a concentrated bit of something as the remainder wasn't overly salty at all. Overall, great food, reasonable prices, cold beer, good atmosphere, and somewhere I plan to visit again a few more times before I head out of town. read more

This place is a little divey in my opinion. Not impressed with any food options at this point. But I'll try again as friends tend to really enjoy this spot. They have trivia night on Mondays... also haven't tried but many say it's a blast. Drinks are decent, reasonably priced. The live band last night was pretty good, the crowd... ehhh lol. But a 10 for people watching, which is really just free entertainment. We had a good time even though the music wasn't my cup of tea. Pretty crowded on a Saturday night.
