This review is long overdue. We stayed here in October of 2017. The cabin was clean and had everything you would need already stocked minus the food. After we arrived and unpacked we made a quick trip to nearby grocery store were we bought everything we needed for a weekend. We actually even ran into the owners at the grocery store. They are very friendly and always make it clear that if you need anything to ask them and they will provide. The cabins are far enough from the main road that you aren't bothered from the small town traffic noise and spaced out enough that you feel like its just you and your cabin in the middle of the woods. We stayed at one of their pet friendly cabins and I brought along with me my German Shepherd. We already are planning on returning this year in fall/winter time with a couple of friends, can't wait! read more

First of all there is no lighting or signage directing you where to go so we had a very hard time finding the cabin. When we eventually found it, we had no way to get in. We had booked on AirBnB and are familiar with that process. The check in instructions on the app and in the email said to contact the host for check in instructions. We sent a message to them on the app and got no response. We called their phone number shown on their listing. It is not an operational number. We ended up having to call the AirBnB customer service number. They were also unable to get ahold of the host. AirBnB refunded our money and we had to check into a motel nearby. It was a long frustrating night. read more

The rental that we stayed at here was just ok. We got the hot tub inside but I wouldn't go in it. Place was run down and seemed very much like a rental. There was a dual fireplace that you could enjoy from inside the fam room or the bedroom. It was the only heat in the place but it worked out ok. read more

Arrived looking forward to relaxing in a quaint cabin. Initially we thought this will be nice. Being told the office was open until 5 we started to settle in. We realized they had very limit wood for the fireplace and no matches to light it. I called the office at 3:30 with no answer and left a message. No one returned our call. Then we found there was no heat in the bathroom which was very cold. Had to RUSH taking a quick shower. Then we noticed some of the lights had burned out bulbs. Still waiting for a return call from the office. Very poor customer service, especially when paying over 200 a night. Next time I'll be looking elsewhere. read more

We stayed in the Delux cabin # 38. We wanted the delux because it had been raining alot and was looking forward to the gas fireplace. We were told we couldn't use it because it heats up te cabin too much. I was cold in the morning and would of been nice to run it for a short time to get the chill off. They shouldn't charge extra if you can't use it. Also kitchen floor under the table was dirty. We're not staying here again. read more

Stayed the weekend before Thanksgiving in Cabin 1 and it was great. The cabin was older but clean. Not spotless but well maintained and well kept up. The wood burning fireplace in our cabin was awesome. Location is great. The back of the property is a short walk to Woodland Lake Park with a good amount of easy hiking/walking trails. And there are a ton of great restaurants nearby. We had breakfast at Darbi's next door and it was great. We will definitely be back! read more

There are a few things going for this place: weather in the evening - the air is clean and fresh, it's cool and quiet; water pressure in the shower; and water quality. To call this place a "resort" is a stretch. It is a bunch of cabins in between two roads. There is no grass, little pebbles cover the whole territory and make a crunchy noise as you walk; all you see are tree trunks. Cabins look nice from the outside, but quite disgusting on the inside. Floors are covered in a terrible shaggy brown carpet. There is a couch and an armchair that are made out of fabric that looks as if it were never cleaned (and it probably was not). To open a window, a guy that brought us to the cabin stepped on a couch and did not even dust off his footprint. Wooden cabinets in the kitchen do not close as they are covered in a thousand layers of lacquer. Kitchen table and benches were sticky from, probably, never drying layers of lacquer (no wiping/clanging helped). Refrigerator was missing shelves and could not be regulated so all our food, milk, water and sodas froze. An electric stove took forever to heat up and only 2 out of 4 burners were working. Bathroom was totally gross: cracked toilet seat and sink, tub with a rusty drain hole, a disgusting medicine cabinet. Towels were grayish and thin. Bedding seemed to be clean except for one of the beds that had a sheet covered in hair and jizz (a new sheet was provided by the office upon request, but we had to change it ourselves). A top of one bed was right under a widow curtain which made the bed unusable as no one wanted to sleep with their head under a curtain or with their legs hanging off the end of the bed or with a head in the hallway. The most horrible, however, were blankets. Naturally grey they had a brownish hue and I'm willing to bet a large sum of money that they have not been washed in months, maybe years, or maybe never. The bathroom was supposed to come stocked with facial tissue - did not have it; makeup removing wipes - 1 for 3 nights stay; bar of soap for the shower - 1 piece for 4 people, 3 nights stay; bar of soap for sink - 2 tiny bars. Glad we brought our own stuff. Outside garbage cans were not emptied until the end of our stay which was quite unpleasant. The last surprise was when before departure I was taking out kitchen garbage. Our garbage can had a huge burned through hole I knew nothing about as it had a garbage bag inside when we arrived. The edges of this hole caught on a full garbage bag and ripped it on a side as I pulled it out, spilling some of the contents. All interactions with staff by me or anyone from our group were less than pleasant. Asking for a sponge as the one in the room was quite gross, a roll of paper towels, or a garbage bag was met with a surprise as if those things are not supposed to be used. These interactions could have been avoided if we had an extra paper towel roll, a new sponge, and an extra garbage bag already in the cabin. We had a nice time sitting outside, but being inside was tough as every minute I wished I could levitate so I don't have to touch anything... read more

Our weekend away at Whispering Pines was absolutely perfect - from the crisp air to the tall trees to the beautiful skies, we loved every minute of it. The cabin was a wonderful, clean, cozy space to unwind; the bed was very comfortable and large; and the kitchen was perfect for a home-cooked meal after sitting on the front porch. Checking in and out was very clear and easy, and the woman at the front desk (I sadly didn't catch her name) was kind and helpful! We also loved that Darbi's was walking distance, and the hiking trails near the property were also fantastic. The cabins at this property are also spaced far enough from each other that it felt more secluded, which was a huge plus - some of the other nearby properties looked more crowded. We stayed here for 5 days, 4 nights and had a good time. To call this place a resort is a stretch. I was disappointed that the communal hot tub was not working and it looked like the self - serve laundry and dryer were not working. This place is not fancy but clean and the kitchen was very well supplied with everything you might need to cook all meals. I love the knotty pine paneling throughout and the beds were very comfortable. The furniture was not particularly fancy but it was adequate. The back porch is a big plus for you to go out and read or listen to music . Also watch for birds and other wildlife. The only drama we had was one night at bedtime, a BIG bug appeared on the bathroom towel and wife had a spell. I took the towel and gave the big bug a trip down the toilet. I will not blame WPR for that; after all, you are in the woods. This place was very clean and a cool respite from the heat . We tried to eat at Darby's next door but it was closed for some reason. However, there are plenty of places to eat around and the Safeway is within walking distance for any food you might want to prepare or take back to the cabin. read more

This was our first time up in the white mountains. We saw the reviews and wanted a get away for a couple days. It was so nice to have it so cool at night and morning. And the cabin was very clean Nothing fancy. We sat outside most of the time. No one ever came to disturb us. The only thing I would change is the chairs on the deck. They are small and wobbly. I say in them but if you were bigger they wouldn't work for you. My husband went out to buy a chair. If you are looking for simple and quiet and a very clean place to be this is a nice option. Very scenic drive from Tucson. A very pleasant surprise. read more

I came here recently for a wedding. The staff was welcoming and friendly. The entrance into the property off the main road comes up really quickly so be prepared to turn. They do have a sign but the entrance isn't very large. I checked in at the front desk and paid the rest of the fee (after previously paying ~50% deposit months prior to my stay). They gave me two sets of physical keys & a property map after which they guided us to our cabin. The property is a cluster of many cabins and there's even a big Victorian house on the outskirts for events. Our cabin accommodated four people and was rather spacious with a bathtub jacuzzi (as many others before me have mentioned) in the master bathroom. We did have some issues however with the hallway bathroom sink which kept clogging/draining slow (which other reviews have also mentioned the drainage). We called them and thankfully they came soon-ish to fix it. The cabin itself could stand to be updated. It seems really old which I suppose could be charming but wasn't really my thing. We also were missing some items like an iron but we did have an ironing board oddly enough. The windows didn't have any blinds, only thin curtains, so the room was fully lit around 6-7am which if you are trying to sleep past that time it would be rather difficult. Full kitchen was stocked with utensils, plates, cups, pans for cooking, etc. which was great. The property isn't what I would imagine a "resort" to be, having traveled internationally and to hospitality capitols like Florida, etc. so you will have to adjust your thought process if that is your view. It's a small little mountain-top town as well so be prepared for that (things close early, no Uber/Lyft available, minimal diversity, and best shopping option is a nearby Walmart). We stayed, I believe, in 2019. The cabin was clean, cozy and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. We will stay there again and look forward to it. The negative reviews I have seen for this country cabin resort fly in the face of the realities we experienced ourselves, and I challenge the veracity of them. This is a morally bankrupt business. Coincidently a new "glowing review" about customer service appeared shortly after this business was exposed on another site. Please read my review and make your call on whether you want to spend your hard earned dollars here. My fiancé reserved cabins at Whispering Pines Resort in Pinetop as a Birthday present to her Mother. She is a cancer survivor and requires two additional surgeries to repair scar tissue. Her surgeon had an unexpected opening so we wanted to cancel our reservation and was told she would lose her deposit since it was within 11 days of her reservation. Their offer was to allow us to reserve up to two months later but we cannot due to a required second surgery that will take place this year. We were even willing to provide a written note from her Dr. confirming the surgery but they still refused to refund the deposit. Communication with Whispering Pines Resort was via a call and email. Here's an exert from their email "I am willing to offer you the ability to transfer part of your deposit to another reservation. It would just have to be a reservation for prior to November 30th. " I wrote the Pinetop Chamber of Commerce CEO Cyndie Shaffstall, asking for their assistance. The response was disappointing. "Compassion works both ways. They are a small business struggling to survive and non-refundable deposits keep their losses lowered when they are unable to re-book a room due to short notice. Their business feeds their families." I was disappointed however I certainly understood their position. So...on Wednesday, September 2, I checked availability at Whispering Pines and every cabin is booked for the weekend that we were scheduled to visit, even the one that we reserved. You would think that the Chamber CEO would be horrified with the business practice of Whispering Pines Resort but they didn't. They pivoted the response away from compassion and wrote "We have investigated, at your request, and found that Whispering Pines acted in good faith and were compassionateUnbelievable. Please post a copy of the email, including date and time stamp that extended the offer through to May as we cannot find it. I disagree with your comment about numerous phone calls as we do not have a record of any phone calls or voice mails. Here's an exert that was sent via email on Aug 31. "I am willing to offer you the ability to transfer part of your deposit to another reservation. It would just have to be a reservation for prior to November 30th." Ever tried to find a cabin for just one night in the Show Low area the night before we had to be there. Whispering Pines Resort in Lakeside-Pinetop came up on an internet search and showed two cabins open. We called and they had unit 37 available so we booked it immediately. Upon arrival the next afternoon, we were welcomed by an athletic host who jogged on before us to show us the way to our cabin. He personally escorted us inside and reviewed the amenities and features. We were very favorably impressed with the layout and cleanliness, and particularly delighted our front porch was right up against the National Forest where we enjoyed a delightful hike. All the features were clean, efficient and worked just fine. the bed was very comfortable, the kitchen well stocked, and the sap tub delightful. We will certainly come again.. read more

Last minute trip just try to get away from the hot valley weather. Found Whispering Pines Resort online with a June weekday deal. Booked, packed and check in the next day. I normally did not have high expectations for all this last minute arrangement. Surprisingly! The resort is very beautiful, surroundded with lots of tall pine trees. The area is very serene and yet just steps away from restaurants and place interest like Woodland Lake,. The cabin is simple, kitchen and bathroom a bit out of date. Immediately off the main road you get surrounded by woods and gravel road. The office is located right at the front so easy to identify. Loved that it had a u-turn off the entrance road and parking so you didn't have to worry about cars coming in or out. Water features and benches are available to sit at. Hummingbird feeders are located throughout the property and at the water features. Polite and friendly staff and clerks. They are knowledgeable and were able to make great recommendations for local food and sightseeing. The cabins were fresh, clean, and overall private. We stayed three nights and four days only saw the neighbors about 5 times. Everyone was friendly and courteous. Cabins are well maintained and if you have questions the front desk is always available to answer your questions. Overall the cabin atmosphere and porch were charming and home feeling, the couch and bed could have been a bit more comfortable. I will definitely stay here again and again! read more

Cabins in the forest! These cabins are surrounded with trees. There are some restaurants and general stores nearby. Friendly staff. Ours was the deluxe cottage that came with a fireplace and jacuzzi, paid $145 inclusive of taxes and resort fee which was little too much considering the area. What I didn't like was the room heater - noisy and made this sound all night. Also they don't provide toothpaste/shampoo so remember to bring them along! Trying hard to find reasons to give them 5 stars but just can't. read more

When we arrived around 7pm, it was a nippy 90 degrees in the cabin. It was OK, though, it eventually cooled off after midnight after opening all the doors and windows. Bonus: we got to smell the freshness of the Marijuana smoke emanating from the neighbors cabin. The bedbugs were especially welcoming after dark, I was fortunate enough to get bitten about half a dozen times. We're still checking to see that none of them made it home with us. Fingers crossed! The rickety, dry rotted stairs were quite charming and always kept you in suspense: are they going to collapse under you or will you make it to the door? What a rush! Looking forward to our next trip to the Show Low area, when we'll pass on this dive and stay at a hotel. read more

Affordable place to stay with multiple cabins centered around a courtyard with a tot lot, so this place can work for family reunions. We initially enjoyed our stay, but were forced to cut our stay short when the temperatures rose due to barely functional air conditioning. One of my co-workers recommended this place. Especially during this time of the year since it starts to cool down. Honestly, if you appreciate simplicity and want to get away from the city life this is the place to come to and just relax. I have done my fair share of travel and I am used to modern resorts but there something about these cabins that have exactly what you need. I went with my partner and we were able to have such a quiet and nice time together. We stayed in the spa deluxe pet friendly cabin (make sure that the cabin has a kitchen if you plan to cook) I accidentally booked a cabin that only had a microwave. Luckily, they called me to confirm my reservation and they were able to switch us into a cabin with full kitchen. Customer service is great. SUPER CLEAN! Even though the furniture and showers can be updated one would be able to be comfortable. The tv had an HDMI cable so we were able to use our laptop- make sure to download your movies/tv shows in case the Wifi starts to slow down specially during night time. Near by Safeway. Lovely trail behind the cabins. Definitely going to come back again when it starts snowing! read more

Was referred to this wonderful retreat by a local business I had worked with back in the early 2000's. Hubby & I ( and our dog) have been coming up almost every year since! We even rented the cabin for a half way point to do a day ride to New Mexico.The cabins are clean, private and close to a hiking trail to Woodland Lake- which is awesome in all seasons! We just got back from our Winter escape. There was snow, ice and the weather was cold but the late afternoon sun made our cocktail hour on the deck really nice! Places to eat ,drink an AZ beer, shop and hike.. all so close from the cabins. Front office is always happy to help w/ anything you need, even if you forget something in the cabin. read more

We just got back from a long weekend we went for my birthday. For my first time staying in a cabin, this was straight out of the story books. So private, peaceful and pleasant. We hiked to the lake and the area is just so beautiful around the cabins. I want to come back in the winter and stay when there is snow. I will definitely recommend and refer this place and return... My very large family just held one of our 3 year reunions we have been having for 45+years at this lovely oasis in the woods. We showed up with 70+ people, 4 generations ages from 6 months to 78 years young, as always needing a variety of cabin sizes and prices. We come from across the country so having fully furnished cabins is a must and with the large gathering area around the Victorian House the setting was perfect. Some of the cabins are quite old and a couple of people with allergies were affected but we have all agreed this would be a great place to return, maybe in 3 years! read more

I thought Whispering Pines was remarkably affordable considering the amenities provided. Cabin #17 was spotless (and I really do mean spotless). They provide silverware, firewood, everything you could possibly ask for regardless of how long or short of a stay you have. While there's other cabins around, it does feel like you're alone in the woods, with some of the cabin's opening out almost directly onto the hiking trail that eventually leads to a neighboring lake. We were totally comfortable and felt safe our entire stay. There's also plenty of big crows, squirrels, and occasionally deers to see. We will be back. read more

We have stayed here twice now. Summer of 2015 and this past weekend. Both times we have had a quiet and peaceful experience. We like cabin 30 since it has a Jacuzzi tub and is towards the back of the property which greatly decreases road noise. There is no maid service but they will exchange your used towels at the office. Decent Wi-Fi. Paved single parking space at your cabin. Mini kitchen has some basic pans, etc. read more

I can't speak for the other cabins but ours was so completely devoid of charm that it was depressing...... 1. Couch has black spots and sags like you are sitting in a bucket. Like a couch you would find in the alley of a college town, with black soot spots. 2. Ants! Lots of ants! 3. Hole-gap-crack in the wall between the bathroom and bedroom, light comes through. 4. 2.5 gallon per minute shower head, I get it's Arizona but it was useless, at least you could unscrew it. 5. Toilet paper roll on thin 'rustic wooden' wall that acts like a giant sound board directly next to your head in the bedroom. 6. The grossest carpeting. Old and cheap. 7. Not even a lamp, just an overly bright ceiling fan with one light setting. Unscrewed the bulbs. 8. Few outlets, no power strips. It is 2017. 9. Terrible cable with the majority of it "needs to be activated", just the cheap channels. 10. Spotty wi-fi constantly dropping, I think all 30+ cabins share the limited bandwidth. 11. You might miss the "whispering" of the pines when they use a leaf blower to "sweep" off the small porches. 12. Hot water was not hot. 13. Bed was full, maybe queen, again saggy and a quality that you would find in the alley of a college town. 14. The cheapest toaster in the world set off the smoke alarm. 15. The refrigerator is old and has a buzz. 16. Window glass was cracked. 17. Mismatched table chairs were wonky and noisy and the table was leveled out with newspaper. 18. Very convenient to Pinetop's main road, so much so you will constantly hear it. .....over all it felt sad, dirty, old and moldy. The paneling, in combination with the gross carpeting, gave it an old basement feel and smell. One the plus side the towels and sheets seemed clean. And they seem to have a HUGE budget for pea gravel. read more

We have stayed here for about 4 times now. This last time, I was very happy to be able to find a place in August to "attempt" to get out of the daytime heat of the Valley. I was to get the handicap accessible cabin, which we have always wanted to get. When I made the reservation, I was assuming that we would be coming with our 2 pups. Our old girl pup was 17, and I thought we would be putting her down. Well, she decided to hang on for this last trip. We went loaded up with everything but the kitchen sink. Unfortunately, the August weather is providing little monsoon rain this summer. We have never gone here in August, and the daytime temps were pretty hot in the cabin. I had taken 2 fans, as they provide 1 with a portable swamp type fan also. My partner who has a traumatic brain injury was way too hot during the day in the cabin. With so much being closed down due to Covid, and the outside afternoon temps, she was very uncomfortable. So, we came home early due to the heat, and me trying to wrestle 3 leashes which included a very old pup, and a 7 month old pup. Surprisingly, I received a check in the mail yesterday for our early departure. What a wonderful surprise, as the Whispering Pines Resort had NO obligation to do so since we were the ones to leave early. Thank you Whispering Pines Resort. I have always said you were so kind, compassionate, friendly and helpful with everything. We will definitely be back when things cool, and we appreciate your professionalism when it was not expected. Love this place! My boyfriend and I stayed in Cabin 38, one of the luxury spa cabins, for a long weekend. The cabin was a great size for the two of us and our two dogs. The cabin was immaculate with sufficient bedding and towels. This particular cabin is at the edge of the property and was very quiet. The property is adjacent to the woods and a trail that led to a nearby lake where our dogs frolicked with the ducks. The property is also walking distance to Darbi's Cafe, which is a slice of heaven. We went there once for dinner and three times for breakfast! Whispering Pines had great amenities and the cabins are in better overall appearance than similar properties in the area. If you're looking for a sweet getaway in the pines, make your reservation now. I'm sure they fill up for summer. We will be back for sure...it was a nice retreat from the hectic city life. This is a 3.5 Pros: Cozy, quiet, comfortable, clean and private. For the price to have a full kitchen and a spa tub these were nice amenities. Plenty of bedding and pillows. Gas fireplace for heating which was both functional and added to the romantic, cozy ambiance. Friendly staff. Cons: The spa tub was difficult to use. You have to fill it half way, then wait 15 minutes to fill the rest of the way - kind of a hassle. Unlike a hotel, there were no shampoos or conditioners or emergency hygiene items if something was forgotten. It is a ways from Sunrise about 40 minutes. Ultimately - I would recommend these cabins over any hotel of the same price. read more

The grounds kept well. There are numerous trails for walking/hiking. Personnel helpful,personally led us to our cabin, opened it up and went over some details. Plenty of firewood for the cabin. Plan on going back next year for a longer stay. read more
