We went for the first time recently. They have really good pub food. My husband had a great burger with jalapeños and onion rings. It was cooked exactly as requested and reasonably priced. I had a Cobb salad that was very, very good. We will be stopping by again next time we're up at the mountain. They were short wait staff when we arrived. I'm surprised that this restaurant in little town can produce such a wonderful burger(Whistle burger), well the burger is so huge since it has two burger meat in there. Franch Toast was okay and above average. I also surprised that they execute "serve yourself" policy. Outdoor is pretty during Summer hour and sunny. Many locals come and sit and chat. Our visit at the Whistle Stop was spontaneous; we'd seen it from the road while headed up to the Skyway for dinner, thought it looked quaint, and decided to pull in and check it out, on the way home. It's a little on the dive-y side, but has touches of charm throughout. Our server was a little timid, yet very friendly, attentive, and efficient. My wife ordered an off-menu cocktail (something akin to a hot toddy), which they were able to assemble to reasonable accuracy; most other dive bars we've visited are missing one or more vital ingredients to make this happen, so kudos for them! The outdoor patio was cute, and heated, but we'd had enough of the cold and wet, so we remained inside. We weren't hungry, but I glanced at the orders of nearby patrons, and noted that the food seemed decent, with hearty portions and very reasonable prices. Seems like most of the Sunday night guests were locals, unsurprisingly, and they seemed to be enjoying themselves, so I imagine this pub is a local favorite. We LOVED this place. Checked out reviews of multiple restaurants in the area and this one got lots of good ones so we called to ask if they require reservations. The lady who answered just laughed, saying "We're a dive bar. Just walk in!" Got the Cobb salad and prime rib. Both were delicious. Food is good sometimes great but staff can be poor on service especially the big grandma lady Kay and owner. Quick back story: I live in the area and I've honestly only been here for karaoke when out of town guests visit and feel like scratching that American Idol Tryouts itch. I've only experienced heavily poured drinks & shots here....until tonight. Tonight was an experience that literally shocked me. Been driving by this place for a while, and once a week or so, I see their billboard out front illuminating their dinner special for the night; short ribs. Folks, I LOVE short ribs. Whistle Stop's rendition of one of my favorite dinner items is pretty dang fabulous. Pot roast tenderness, resting on a nice bed of mashed potatoes. Texas toast on the side, with a salad. It's truly excellent comfort food and I'll surely be back again to try other menu items. **Their mushroom beef soup is also luxuriously creamy and divine** This mountain never ceases to amaze me with all these beautiful hidden gems! This place gives off a dive-vibe because it kind of is. Or used to be. But don't be deceived. There's a really creative and talented person running the kitchen, and they come up with some amazing specials that you should never miss. The food can be really outstanding, ranging from a meatloaf night to a mushroom soup with locally sourced chanterelles and an Oso Bucco that will melt in your mouth. There's always one good special or another. They do a pretty passable breakfast, too. Service is really friendly and good. Love this place. I only wish they would put the lottery machines back into their own little space so we can go and dine there as a family again. read more

We are local and I will say that we always experience excellent food and very friendly service from the wait staff and the bar. Even the chef has come to check on our approval of the diner and say hello. You will be surrounded by a very outdated 70's 80's decor vibe, but that's what you get. Better as a bar, not so much as a restaurant. I was trying all of the breakfast joints in the 5 mile radius of my rental cabin and happened upon this bar, surprised that it served breakfast. So I came in here thinking it was set up and staffed as a restaurant, but realizing the one bartender and one cook didn't usually expect many people. Six people sat before us and were a bit high maintenance, which isn't conductive to a half a row of bar patrons and us who just want some hot eggs. We were patient as usual, seeing this guy run around trying to please. He brought us coffee, no cream. We finally ordered, typical egg bacon hash browns and a breakfast burrito. We had no silverware. The food came actually hot, but nothing special. I really felt sorry for the guy. I suggest this establishment gets rid of breakfast and just serves lunch and/or pub type food. That and to expect to have extra staff over the holidays. Would not come here again for food. read more

Excellent diner food with lots of stuff made in-house, and great service. We came down the mountain in a snow storm, and our previous go-to, The Barlow Trail Roadhouse, was closed, so we gave the WS. HUGE portions of well made breakfast food. I had the two egg breakfast with links, hashbrowns, and a biscuit. Take my advice... GET THE BISCUIT! It's homemade, and they half it and the griddle it with butter. It's freaking delcious, and the perfect vessel to scoop up your eggs and stuff. Server was fun to talk with and gave us some tips to explore in the area. Bonus, Mono vodka is only a fifty cent upcharge from their well, so go ahead and splurge! read more

Walk inside, shut door and turn around and look at cleanliness of front door. The menu is confusing as biscuits and gravy was listed under egg breakfast and directly under it says egg breakfasts include country potatoes or hash browns & toast or pancakes. Although biscuits and gravy is listed under the egg breakfast it doesn't include eggs and toast or choice of hash browns. Everything was like a giant pile of smoosh. I had the Vegetarian Omelet Breakfast yesterday, it was hot and OK but DO NOT upgrade (PAY EXTRA) for a biscuit...horrible wad of dough soggy-soaked in grease, it had no resemblance to a biscuit, more like some pancake dough dipped in a skillet, not brown or fluffy, but gummy and greasy. Our waitress Roxy was adorable and trying hard, but details were missed as far as service, drink requests and/or refills. Table of four family members. Was hard to get something to drink (never did get glass of water as requested) We were ready to get up and try and get our own coffee. We will avoid for breakfast again. Friends dropped into this lovely bar & grill while in the area. It has quite the character with the flavor of a Scottish Pub. Great food, fun people, attentive staff made for a great visit. Had a nice mix of locals and tourist with everyone having a great time. The beer garden gave it a nice feel with music, horseshoes, and plenty of outside tables for everyone. The best part was the local bar dog, Charlie hanging out with the rest of us making sure everyone who came in was welcome. If you are in the Portland/Mt. Hood area stop in, have a beer or drink and enjoy. The new owners are welcoming and making this a great local place for good food and some laughter. read more

After passing this place many times on our way from Carson City, NV to Poulsbo, WA, we finally decided to stop here for a late lunch. I'd call it Divey-Chic... Lots to love in here, if you like old style eatery-bars. As another reviewer mentioned, the ciggy machine looks a bit out of place. I liked it though because it reminds me of my youth - before the advent of political correctness and it's negative effect on our country. So, on to the food. I ordered some HUGE burger (wish I could remember the name of it) that took all I had to stuff it down. It was damned good, and so were the fries that came with it. Wifey got a BLT which she said was excellent. The lady who waited on us was good old fashioned friendly. Quick with a joke and a laugh, she was perfect for this place.
