Nah, it wasn't that far. Mattie came to our table, explained to us our options. We picked the Harvest Soup, they started veggie choppin'. We slurped down our bowls, not having a clue. Waiting on a vegan wrap, and burger, Lou's Blues. Consumed it all, while listening to friendly chatter. Enjoying a healing tea, so nothing would be the matter. I had heard very good things about this place, and since it is located just across the river from us, figured we should try it out. This is a typical, small-town eatery- 6-7 tables inside, but they do have outdoors seating for the warmer times of the year. Service is prompt and friendly. Food was okay- not at the level that I had heard about, but decent. Was disappointed in the homemade corned beef hash- it consisted of literally 90% potatoes, 10% corned beef. Omelets were freshly made, but for, on average, $10 per, I was expecting much more. Overall a decent place to get breakfast, but there are better options in the area. read more

Just got back from spending Labor Day weekend with some close friends and there was a daily excursion to the Whistle Stop for breakfast/brunch. The staff is welcoming, friendly and treat their customers as extended family members. The owner/chef Hedy even offered free mini hurricane cocktails this weekend along with the wonderful menu offerings. She personally left the kitchen to mingle with her patrons sitting under the canopy in their behind the small inside dining room and checked in/chatted with all. Coffee was offered throughout the meal by her lovely daughter who was our server. The hurricanes were terrific and the food is always top notch. The various eggs benedict choices I've had are stellar including the Neptune, served with smoked salmon and caviar roe. The special Duval St. Benedict from her recent jaunt to Key West was wonderful, served with salmon, kale, shallots and creamy cheese. mmm The breakfast sandwiches we tried were all tasty as well including the Southern Belle, Irish Jig and Flying Dutchman. The benedict options are also served as omelets with additional choices to boot. We did not venture too far into the lunch options over our three visits this weekend but the Reuben was definitely a winner. One of my friends was slightly disappointed in her steak wrap but all in all this was a wonderful place for breakfast/brunch and not to be missed if in the area. My daughter & I stopped in for the first time today WHAT A TREAT!! Maddie was our server, Anthony was the cook. Maddie was so informative and helpful and the absolute most pleasant server I've encountered in some time. The menu items are unique and FRESH. Our food was absolutely delicious and in talking to the owner I found out that at certain times of year there are special menu items such as the sage sausage which I ordered and took home for my husband who went crazy for it. I have 2 vegans &1 vegetarian in my family and there are yummy selections for all of them on this menu including vegan hot chocolate! Sat down for breakfast and was presented with some specials in addition to a stacked menu. I asked the chef/owner some thoughts and we decided on the Spicy Herbivore omelet with tea. Chef helped me with a choice of toast, cranberry nut, and recommended the berry marmalade! Delicious and the flavor profile depth in her cooking made my morning. Chef's special healing tea selection had me pause and give thought for what to choose. I was expecting a flavored tea bag and was met instead with a home brewed tea with complexity that matched the breakfast. We were greeted by a sweet girl who was both cook & server. Robert got a special Athens Georgia; sage sausage, sun dried tomatoes, garlic, onions and feta cheese. He absolutely loved the seasoning in the sausage. I manage to steal a bit and boy oh boy, it was tasty! I got the homemade corned beef hash, 2 eggs and toast ($8.95). The corned beef was more "beef" tasting, rather than the "corned process" (the whole salting and soaking ordeal) . If that makes sense? Robert really lucked out and got the better of the two.
