I remember my first exposure to White Castle were these frozen reheatable sliders that they would sell in a grocery store. My dad used to love them, and would buy them every week. I thought they were alright.. but I wanted to try it in the actual restaurant. So.. I've always wanted to eat at this joint since 2004... when I first watched Harold and Kumar go through a crazy journey to satisfy their hunger at White Castle. Yes I waited 6 years, so I did have pretty high expectations. People from around the area kept calling it the In N Out of the east coast.. so I really wanted to try it for myself. As I walked in with my sister and uncle, I was surprised that it was so crowded. From looking around at all of the black and white photos posted on the wall, it seemed like this place had a lot of history. Maybe that explains why most of the customers were an older crowd. I ordered a chicken ring with cheese, an original slider, a bacon cheeseburger, and their new savory loaded fries with bacon, cheddar, and ranch., Each slider was done in 3 bites. I'll admit- the burgers seem cute & scrumptious in their little cardboard box homes, but looks are deceiving. They taste like miniature versions of burgers from McDonald's or something. In fact, they kind of taste like the ones I got from the grocery year many years ago. The fries kind of made me sick to my stomach so I gave the rest to my sister. My uncle, who is a NJ native, isn't even a fan of this place. He told me White Castle used to be really good a few decades ago when they used real beef. Now, it's just processed mystery meat. I don't know why people compare it to In N Out when they're not even similar. Burgers aren't even on the same level in terms of quality. It is a lot cheaper though. 2.5 stars. read more

Food was good however they do not offer vegan cheese at this location for their impossible burgers. I do not like ketchup so my burgers were a little dry, I did get extra onions. My friend had a few regular cheeseburgers and he said they were good. Haven't been to a white castle in a while And was excited. Everything was fine as far as the drive-through but the mozzarella sticks, the onion rings, and the chicken sliders all tasted like fish meaning that the oil is not changed and they're mixing it which is disgusting. Coming here was a hike - 35 minute drive. Came around 10pm and got my food quickly. It was even still hot by the time I got home! The sliders are only 75 cents if you buy them individually, and they're out of this world - unlike any other fast food burger. There are some great combo deals, as well. I grew up eating White Castle. My grandmother worked for them for 25 years at a different location. So, foodwise I'm biased. I'll always give the food a good review as the recipe doesn't change. If you've never went, go. Little square burgers on square buns, in little square boxes, or, sliders, as they've become to be known. And, they're always adding to the menu. This location: Fairly clean most of the time & the service is adequate. There is 1 particular employee who always seems to confuse your order while you're telling him because he asks you questions while you're ordering. He's somewhat of a strange dude. The prices are average, & they have combo options to save a few bucks. All in all, not a bad trip out for some classic Jersey fast food. The drive-thru cuts in on the go-around lane, so if you're parked near it, & trying to back out, you may be blocked in waiting. I advise parking in front. And, beware the seagulls. Yay, it's White Castle! For some strangely inexplicable reason, I love these little ratburgers. I don't get over here very often, even though its only about 5 minutes from home - I usually come here with my cousins in the summer; it's kind of a tradition these days. The food may not be of the highest quality (GASP - a perception I'm sure White Castle would hotly contest) but hey, it is what it is. Sometimes you don't want an Angus burger or filet mignon. Sometimes these greasy little mystery meat burgers are exactly what you are craving. It helps that they make them where you can see them though. As long as you are realistic in your expectations, this place is great. Definitely defies the usual fast-food mold of McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, etc. You have to really WANT to come here. 11 years after the great Harold and Kumar came out, I was finally able to satisfy my curiosity and cravings for the famous Sliders! I've lived in Texas and now California, so the closest I've ever come to having white castle was through the microwaveable ones from Walmart. Now it just so happens that I've finally made my way out to the east coast on business, and the first thing that came to mind was "where's the nearest White Castle?" So why the 3 stars?? Well, I was honestly disappointed that the sliders didn't meet my expectations. Why? Because for so many years people have told me that the frozen version from Walmart just isn't same. But based on my food today, I beg to differ. They were very much the same...well actually its sad to say that their frozen version is a little better. I know, it should NEVER be that way, right? Now, am I saying the food was bad? Nope. Again, I'm just disappointed that the difference in taste was nearly zero. Also, the sack of fries were not that great and needed more salt, but then again I've never been a fan of crinkle style fries. As for service, the staff was friendly and my food(12 cheese sliders and fries) came out quick. No gripes there. Where I'm from the only White Castle we know is the microwaveable sliders from the super market. With recent circumstances I was able to visit a real White Castle. We spent the money and ordered the crave box of 30 sliders to make a memory. The staff was nice enough to even give us another crave box, box so we could both have one. The sliders were the best tasting sliders that me mr Hawaiian shirt and my friend have ever had on our taste buds. The bathroom was a bit lower end but who the hell cares the food was absolutely amazing. This is the first review I actually rated before typing. While this location may not be the most convenient it is White Castle and it is absolutely essential to the area. Let me explain. Before moving to Point Pleasant I lived all over the Ocean and Union county areas. What made me the most happy to come back to the Salt Life was knowing that White Castle was within reach. Every. EVERY other fast food type of establishment down here is just about awful. It wasn't always but it is nowadays. From Roy Rogers to KFC to McDonalds to Burger King to Checkers (ironically located right next to White Castle) to Boston Market to Friendly's, you cannot pay enough for a good fast food experience in this area. You walk in to any one of the others and immediately you can feel the I don't give a shit air about the place, interestingly enough like most of the White Castles in the Union County area as well. And it's off putting. And I am being fair here because I don't like to cook much at home so I love me some on the go grub. The only other place that comes to mind that serves up a good burger in the area is Smashburger. Totally different type of burger but the only other one done right near me. The service other than these two places is horrible. No management or staff give a fuck anymore and it shows because they do not hide it. This location does leave something to be desired BUT but it is nowhere near the slummy I don't give a fuck bottom of some of it's cousins back up north. Try either of the Elizabeth locations, or the Union location and you will see the stark contrast between the different chain locals. My personal favorite White Castle location is ROUTE 22 W GREENBROOK, NJ but since I live nowhere near that one this location does just fine. It's on the same scale as the Menlo Park one if that clears anything up for anyone. At any White Castle it's the food that matters. You know what it is and what it should be. That's exactly what you get here so yes I am a fan. I am also grateful to have a location not horribly far away. On a lazy weekend it is actually a nice drive and the best part is I know it's worth it. So to every other fast food chain down here I invite you to keep sucking because I cannot be the only one who'll just eat more White Castle. Oh yes and it still hits the gut almost immediately after. Well I can cross another of the fabled Fast Food places off my list. I'd never been to White Castle therefore I was curious to try it. I'd had the frozen facsimile from the supermarket but I wanted the real deal so myself and a few other intrepid Yelpers got in a car and took a 2hr road trip up to Toms River. I'm sure to anyone with easy access to WC would think this is foolish but I've done similar foolish and senseless things such as getting a college education. Honestly, the fun was in the journey therefore the end meal was just a bonus and didn't have to be amazing. ( It wasn't). None of us were expecting to be wowed, which made the experience less disappointing . Sliders have become trendy so the choices at WC seemed cutting edge; Mini Burgers, mini chicken , mini fish and mini surf and turf ( a burger and a fish patty). I thought the Chicken rings ( chicken nuggets in the shape of an onion ring) were interesting. The fries were pretty good, reminding me of Chickie and Pete's crinkle cut style. To be honest, I didn't see a big difference between the fresh made burgers and the frozen ones I've tried. Both are on the soggy side but are tasty due to the onions. Overall, the experience was just as I expected, marginal fast food. I'm actually happy that there was nothing there that wowed me enough to make a return trip. If I ever get the craving, I'm content to nuke the frozen ones. read more

The Castle deserves nothing short of 5 stars. Delicious, greasy goodness. Don't come here if you are on a diet or trying to watch what you eat. Sliders are addicting. You may say you're just going to have a few but that usually generates 10-15 for me. White Castle in Toms River is also awesome because of it's location to Seaside Heights. My friends and I usually take a walk on the boards to build up an appetite so we can savor White Castle on the drive home. I live about an hour from there, but it is well worth the drive. You can't live in NJ and say that you've never been to White Castle (even though there aren't any in South Jersey). On a very good day you will be lucky enough to meet Leslie who is one of the nicest employees of the Castle that I have ever met. He always make conversation and holds the door for us on the way out. I volunteered to be our intrepid navigator through the rough choppy seas of New Jersey shore traffic. These 4 Yelpers decided to road trip to White Castle to sample their iconic burger sliders. Think Harold and Kumar go to White Castle meets Bonnie and Clyde, with a dash of the Breakfast Club. When our bisexual clown car pulled up at the Tom's River WC, our appetites were in fine form. Our group ordered a large assortment of burgers, chicken sliders, and fries. WC fries are nothing special in my book, not a big fan of the crinkle cut. The burgers were kind of hilarious. The meat layer is akin to an ancient dishrag that's been used and washed so many times it's nearly disintegrating. The onions and pickles add the only discernible flavour. One could probably eat 10 of these because there is so little substance to them. However, the surprise winner of the night were the chicken sliders. They are made of actual chicken breast with a recognizably natural meat grain!!!!!! You can imagine my surprise. The BBQ sauce on the Western is a bit sweet, but the onion rings on top make up for it a bit. Skip the chicken rings. As you can see from my review of the Howell location, I'm a bit of a "craver" from time to time, and have the horrible urge to shovel tiny soggy burgers into my maw until I'm nearly sickened. Whenever I don't feel like hitting the highways to make the 30 minute trek out to the Howell location, I come here. To be honest, this WC is a really mixed bag. I know what you're thinking - these chains are all the same, and you're right - to a point. While the interior and food quality is pretty much identical to every single WC I've been to, there's a few things of note here. The good: The staff is incredibly friendly, service is beyond quick, and they keep the interior pretty clean. Burgers always come out hot, although sometimes the bread can be a little dried out (not sure why). The meh: Unlike the Howell location, the soda machines here are under lockdown. Want to get a small soda and refill it halfway through your meal? Gonna have to buy another soda - no free refills here, something that always ticked me off given the fact that soda is almost 100% profit anyway. Also either the prices have gone up, or this location is a bit higher priced than the Howell / Eatontown stores by about 10c each. This location also seems to attract some of the craziest / stupidest / weirdest people you'll ever come across. This ranges from morons who hold up the line because they can't grasp the concept of buying hamburgers in bulk, to ripe smelling people who can out-stink the onion steamed burgers. It can be amusing or terrifying, depending on your tolerance. Either way, it's still a great cheap place to eat in the area, although I still prefer the Howell location. read more

I find White Castle impossible to resist. It's a combination of nostalgia and the fact that their burgers are SO DAMN delicious on their little steamed buns. I no longer live near a White Castle, so anytime i'm traveling and catch a glimpse of a WC, I swerve the car immediately into their drive through line and get going! In addition to the classic burgers, there are some new items on the menu, most notably, breakfast sandwiches (steamed on those mini buns as well) and mini tot-like corn dogs (epic). If you want my advice and this is your first time, order two cheeseburgers and prepare to be transported to some new happy place you may have never known existed. At this particular WC, the drive through line moved quickly and the staff was friendly and efficient. The only reason for 3 stars instead of 5 is that while White Castle burgers are among my favorite things to eat on this planet, I do acknowledge that this is fast food and not necessarily good for the heart. The Tom's River location approximately 1 hour and 20 min from my South Jersey residence, and i have made this trip half a dozen times and they get better with age. In addition to your visit, please take note to read a letter written about a White Castle employee from a customer about the great customer service that every patron receives. I got four regular burgers, fries and on top of that two jalapeno burgers, two bacon cheese burgers and a chicken sandwich and i ate all. Coming home from the Jersey Shore and what did I find?? A White Castle!! All you East Coasters need to appreciate this cuz there are zero white Castles on the West Coast :( I grew up eating these cute little burgers and this White Castle's location did not disappoint! Service was great and very speedy. What's cool is at this location they have a glass panel where you can see them make all of these mouth-watering burgers. Just wish that there were locations in Seattle and Kansas City!! The nastiest employee grabbed our money out of my husbands hand and wouldn't reach over due to laziness dropping the change to the ground.She was sarcastic taking our order which had to be explained to her 3 times until she finally understood while we tried to order a cravecase. She then had the nerve to ask us to pick up 15 cents off of the dirty ground which she dropped out of her hand. I typically don't see the point in reviewing fast food chains, being that they're essentially alike with varying levels of bathroom cleanliness, but these idiots from California are really pissing me off. My wife thinks California is a cesspool, and that everyone who lives there is either retarded or delirious; I don't share her views, but based on what I'm reading, I'm beginning to come around to them. Anyone who ever said that White Castle is "the blah blah of blah blah blah" is flat-out full of shit. White Castle is White Castle, and it isn't like anything else. Yes, they taste a bit like the frozen ones. Why? Because they're the same damned thing, nitwit. White Castle isn't anything like In-N-Out ; I can't even imagine how someone could assert that, unless they were talking out of their ass. But lots of people talk out of their ass, don't they? Here's the short and sweet: you either love them, or you hate them. Here are the details: they are steam grilled, so the buns get moist and greasy, soggy at the edges. That's the best part of them. The cheeseburgers cost you 200 calories a piece, and you probably need 6 or 8 of them; you can eat more, possibly a lot, but it's not advisable. You will get indigestion, sometimes very badly; buy a bottle of Gaviscon. The fries do suck - they are limp, and getting limper by the second as they wallow in their carton or bag. The fried clams are great, but I don't see how you can make a bad fried clam, unless you start with a bad clam, or undercook them like a White Castle french fry. The chicken rings are a tasty filler to keep you from eating 12 burgers, all the while ensuring that you receive the correct overdose of sodium. The shakes are almost impenetrable - you could theoretically suck your eyes into your head trying to drink one. Most White Castles are badly in need of having their post mix systems cleaned, so the soda is frequently terrible; not as bad as at a stadium or arena, but it can run close. White Castle tastes best late at night, when you are either very drunk, very high, or both. If you are very drunk or very high during the day, White Castle also tastes delicious. Eating White Castle burgers for breakfast while you are sober will make you wish you were dead for the remainder of the workday. If you come here, come here for the burgers, and either enjoy them for what they are, or don't. Please understand though, that failure to appreciate them is a failure on your part, not on the part of White Castle. You just weren't raised properly, and that's okay, but you don't have to wave your ill-bred nature in everyone's face by verbalizing your feelings.
