Unpretentious and fantastic quality donuts. Some may look over this shop because they don't offer the unique flavors other shops have but it doesn't need to. They offer traditional flavors/types of donuts and they make them incredibly well. It took several visits until we found that magical OPEN sign in front of this little locally-owned donut shop. Jim, the owner and donut chef opens at 5 am and sells until the donuts run out (usually by 9 am). The shop is not fancy, but just plain old cute and non-pretentious. The walls are adorned with a mixture of golf, fishing and miscellaneous decor. Jim greets you with a big smile standing behind a case filled with freshly-baked assorted donuts. He recommends the glazed or cake donuts. He also serves coffee...nothing fancy, just coffee. Jim only takes cash or checks, no credit or debit cards, so bring cash. Most folks take their donuts to go, but there are three tables to enjoy donuts and coffee. I devour a glazed donut that melts in my mouth. Jim offers a donut hole to a toddler that just walked in. Drove by this place a few weeks ago, saw positive reviews on Yelp and had to give it a shot. Heard they run out, so set an alarm for 6am in a Saturday to come and snag some donuts. Great donuts & excellent customer service. We have 3 young kids & just moved to the area. We popped in for the first time ever and didn't realize they are cash only until we were checking out. We were going to just come back when we had cash but they insisted we just take them. I was blown away by the thoughtfulness & "hometown" touch. Everyone was wearing masks. Sanitizer at the door. Truly a local operation, I had the pleasure of trying a pumpkin donut from John this weekend. Every morning the donuts are hand made from dough to glaze! Come hungry, come early, and come with cash! White House has always been among the top doughnut places on the northside. So we had to check it out! We arrived at 8:45 on a Saturday and let me tell you, this place is popular! You could tell the doughnuts had been picked over a little as they didn't have as large of an assortment. We got 2 white frosting long John doughnuts and doughnut holes. This is not somewhere you're going to stand in a long line to have surly service from a horde of women that just want to get you out the door. I tried 2 on my first visit: a regular yeast-risen glazed, and a blueberry. Both were GREAT. Moist, light, fluffy, with flavors other than just "sugar". There were also Boston Cream varieties, Bear Claws, and more. The man behind the counter had to be at least 70 and his apron said "Donuts...the new Manna!" He was really nice and smiled. If I could give this place 6 stars I would. As a baker myself I'm pretty picky about what we pay for in terms of baked goods. These donuts are phenomenal. They are so light and they melt in your mouth. We love them because they are not super sweet as some of the other in the area. They have the best apple fritters I have ever had. The two older gentlemen that run it are SO sweet. They love conversation with the patrons and always fawn over the kids. It's a great family place to go in. They sell out fast! So if you want donuts on Saturday morning be prepared to be there before 830 or 9. There is very limited seating inside and is typically taken by a group of men having a lovely chat over hot cups of coffee. They only take cash. Stop by the atm on the way. The reviewer who said this is no Long's is right... It's better! Or maybe more accurately, different. Their cake donuts are the best I've found in central Indiana whereas Long's is known more for yeast confections. The actual name of the business is White House Donuts, which is not obvious given the non-descript signage and lack of any branding aside from a rubber stamp they put on a takeout box. 3 generations keep the shop which is pretty neat. Please be advised that the early bird gets the worm here: if you can't get there by 8am, I'd recommend trying another day (except for Sundays & Mondays when they are CLOSED) as the pickings will be slim. OR - call ahead, and have them set aside an order for you (*remember: it's 'White House Donuts' if you're trying to hunt down phone # or address on the fly). My absolute favorite is the blueberry cake, but other family faves include the iced old fashioned, chocolate cake, boston creme, and apple fritters. They'll often have seasonal flavored cake donuts and icing too like strawberry in summer or pumpkin in the fall that don't disappoint. Luckily we will call and they always ran out of everything except 1 item or donut and so we have them hold that one item but not sure if cuz we do too late or just eating leftovers that no one wants why but never hits the spot.
