Ate at the White Mountain Cider Restaurant tonight with my wife and our 8 year old son. The food at this restaurant is amazing. I put it in my top 20 meals of all time. We come to North Conway every year and have skipped this restaurant because it doesn't have a kids menu, but they have pasta and butter that our picky son loved. My wife and I have the falafel entree as an appetizer. She said it was the best she's ever had and she loves falafel. I have the duck breast and would highly recommend it, it was cooked perfectly. For desert we had the Cider donut and ice cream. This desert stole the show! I highly recommend this restaurant. Top 20 of all time. read more

The exterior of this restaurant doesn't look very inviting, but wow, you step into a fine dining establishment inside. There is a wide bar backed by a mirror for those looking to enjoy a nice cocktail, a large old hearth for those cold winter nights, and limited seating, so make reservations. We went on a Monday night and this place was still packed. It's rustic farmhouse decor inside, but then all the tables are custom made of thick granite with a live edge. What a neat look. There's no kids menu but we felt that kids were welcome since they still had kids cups. We were invited to order for our 2 year old off of the casual fare menu which included a parmesan crust mac and cheese for $12. It was a huge portion and came with the vegetable of the day on the side. The beer and wine selection was decent but the cocktails were excellent. I tried the wisdoms hue, which was a dry vodka cocktail with hints of grapefruit, rosemary, and sage. It was this gorgeous periwinkle color. So delicious I had to have 2. The food doesn't come out immediately so you know the dishes are carefully prepared. We snacked on homemade harvest style bread with warmed butter. We had fried calamari for an appetizer, which was served with roasted corn and cherry tomatoes that themselves were bursting with flavor. We ordered the chilled cucumber soup special, which was described as cucumber, coconut milk, and basil. It was a little bit of a surprise when it came out very, very spicy. Now, I love some heat in my food as do other members of my party, but we all agree it was up there. Not to mention that it wasn't part of the description or I might have passed. We didn't finish the soups. The waitress inquired with the chef who then revealed that there was just "a little jalapeno." Well, it was more than a little, and that would have been nice to know. At $9 per soup, no effort was made to make amends for this snafu. For entrees, we ordered shrimp and scallops, the pork tenderloin, the duck breast, and a shrimp special served with homemade udon in a Thai curry sauce of coconut milk, yellow curry, and lemongrass. All entrees looked and tasted outstanding. The comments were that the pork tenderloin, cooked medium, tasted juicy like a steak. The shrimp special flavor was right on par with the best Thai restaurants. The shrimp and scallops were perfectly cooked and tender, served with a beurre blanc that was perfectly executed. The only dish that missed the mark was the duck. I ordered my duck medium rare, which is what I was told how the chef recommends it. As the waitress presented the dish, she said, "Now, that looks a little overcooked, so let me know if that isn't to your liking." Well, there is the second understatement of the evening. The duck was very small and was well done and tough to chew. She wasn't surprised that I sent it back. I have to ask that if the server could even tell a dish is not up to par, how can they not be embarrassed to serve this out of their kitchen? Are they banking on some customers paying $30+ for an entree and not complaining? Save yourselves the customer angst next time and just resolve to serve quality over quantity please. Well, at least the second try for the duck breast was delicious, crispy five spiced skin with tender and medium rare meat, and a much more reasonable sized breast. It was served over a soba noodle and arugula salad that had a bright citrusy dressing. However, no effort was made here, and no apology either. I think overall, this place has the best food and drink in town. However, they are also one of the most expensive, rounding out at close to $150 per couple for dinner. They also miss the mark "a little" with their service, serving specials with inaccurate descriptions and overcooked duck breast knowing I would send it back. There is no kids menu despite family attractions being the main draw to town during the summertime, and this restaurant is 4 minutes from Story Land. It is worth a visit to try, taking in their service with a grain of salt. read more

Great service, rustic feel, delicious entrees, and need to get desserts! Our waiter Matt was super kind and on point. He never let our water glasses go empty - shout out o helping us be hydrated for our Mt Washington Hike! I had a taco special of the night which was very unique and delicious - the tahini sauce on top was a good touch. My fiancé had the Korean short rib sandwich which was even better than my meal so I had to eat half of course. It had just the right kick and the braised short rib was very tender and flavorful - definitely recommend getting this sandwich. My friend got the Mac n cheese and enjoyed it as well. Very happy we saved room for dessert because the apple cider donuts with ice cream is a must! It came with 2 full donuts and 2 scoops of ice cream and caramel. We also got the cold pressed cider which was very fresh. This restaurant definitely deserves all the stars for the great service, unique and delicious dishes, and great ambience. Cider Co. (aka White Mtn. Cider Co.) was recommended to us by the bartender at the Inn at Thorn Hill where we ate the night before (also excellent!). "If you like the food here, you'd also like..." she said. She was absolutely right! We have two new favorite places in / around Jackson, NH! Do not let the nondescript white house and the signs for their other / daytime Cider Donuts and Apple Cider business fool you! That business is in the red barn at the back of the lot. The restaurant is through the side screen door of the house. You'll feel like you're walking into someone's house at first but once inside you'll discover you're in the right place. We love to sit at the bar and eat "tapas style" from the appetizer and salad menu. Cider Co. is perfect for this. Great drinks, great apps and salads, friendly & helpful staff and (big bonus) nearly all locally sourced / organic. We wanted to try every app., but for this visit we went with the warm Spanish olives and almonds, wild mushroom polenta, chicken spring rolls (a special), scallops in watermelon gazpacho, and grilled romaine salad. Like I said, we wanted to try everything (lol). It all looked so good. But that was only half of the app. menu! There's much more to try next time. (The folks next to us had the homemade potato chips with toppings and it looked pretty amazing.) The Peak (organic) IPA was also very good. They take pride in the food they make. Even though the menu is not large like so many other restaurants, they make sure that whatever you order is made perfectly. The appetizer with the cheese and meats were tasty and can really be shared for four people. The pastas were delicious, even my kids said it was the best and finished every bit. My halibut was cooked to perfection, lightly grilled on the outside, but moist and juicy white flakes as you cut your way in. Complemented with the eggplant mash truly well. Mini blueberry pie was AWESOME - I don't normally like blueberry pies but this was fantastic - not too sugary/sweet and tasted of blueberries and the crust was great. The raspberry/white chocolate scone I could've skipped extremely soft, with almost the texture of a muffin than a scone. I prefer crispy scones but my husband loved it. First time guest at this restaurant for Valentine's Day dinner with my wife. I had a dish of scallops over black rice with a sour mustard mushroom sauce garnished with celery and bokchoi. My wife had the hanger steak that came with a wine sauce and a potato cake infused with sage. For dessert we had their signature homemade cider donuts with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. We started the meal with salmon tartare topped with pickled onions which was very tasty. The plate was also lined with some sort of cucumber gastric that was very tasty as well. Also on the plate was their homemade crackers which were light and paired well with the tartar. The scallops were cooked to perfection, and had a wonderful crust on them. The black rice was in my opinion kind of pasty. The sour mustard sauce with slivers of mushrooms was very sour and didn't match the rest of the meal. The flavor just didn't work. My wife loved her hanger steak that was cooked medium rare. The wine sauce was dark and rich and the potato cake was absolutely perfect. It was obvious that the chef had used very fresh sage. Her steak portion was very small. The meat looked as thin as fajita meat and there was about five strips of it. The cider donuts were cooked to perfection. They came warm and crispy on the outside. The vanilla ice cream complemented it very nicely in the caramel with the light sprinkling of powdered sugar completed the desert. The atmosphere, although very cramped, was surprisingly not very loud and was comfortable. The waitresses were friendly and talkative in the overall ambience was enhanced by the smell of a fireplace in the bar area. Both my wife and I believe that it was overpriced, but still we would go there again. Even though I wasn't thrilled with the scallop dish because of that strange sour sauce, the rest of the experience was worth it and I would be very willing to try another menu item. Every couple that came for Valentine's Day left with a rose from the restaurant, which was a very nice. Overall we were happy that we chose this restaurant for our special evening. read more

Absolutely fantastic food. The dishes seem to have been based off of traditional, comfort food, but have a modern twist to them in taste and ingredients. We had their Special House-Made Chips with Gorgonzola and Corn Chowder to start and we were blown away. I made a reservation for White Mountain Cider for later in the evening, but arrived quite early for the reservation. The accommodating staff at the restaurant were able to seat us in their cozy outdoor area, that has heating lamps and blankets for the cold fall and winter months in New Hampshire. For an appetizer, we ordered the roasted beets, which was a wonderful way to start our meal with lovely textures and flavors. I ordered the harissa roasted cauliflower for my entree- I was pleasantly surprised with the at least 3 vegetarian options I found on the menu. The dish was overall pretty good, but the sweet potato purée was quite salty, so I wasn't able to finish the entire meal. The cook of the cauliflower was great and the accompanying sauces were creative. My boyfriend ordered the Pork schnitzel, which he enjoyed, but wasn't amazed by. The truffle fries we ordered as a side were excellent and well seasoned. Our waitress was very attentive, refilled our water often, and was overall very pleasant. So we gave WMC another try after a disappointing meal the last time. They certainly redeemed themselves this time. We had the lamb bolognese with gnocchi and truffle fries for appetizers. Fries are crispy, probably twice fried so they were addictive and delicious. The gnocchi was not what I expected since it came out in blocks rather than little puffs but it was a great starter. For dinner, I had the steak and my husband had the braised short ribs. The sauces for both dishes were amazing. Broccolinni was cooked perfectly. Potato gratin was ok but a little heavy for me. We were stuffed so we took the rest home and had it for lunch the next day. Maybe we caught WMC on a bad night last time but I'm glad we didn't drop them off our go to list for this area. read more

Our last meal on our White Mountain vacation was at the aptly named White Mountain Cider Co. While I expected their cider to be featured more prominently, I soon discovered that their culinary repertoire was probably more intriguing than I had originally expected. We started with some drinks and the Portuguese seafood chowder along with the duck terrine. The drinks were excellent, which was the first tip off that we were in for a good night. They served modern classics along with some old standards. We each had two drinks that night and all 4 were excellent. My "American style" vieux carré, in particular was very nice. The food was the second pleasant surprise. The Portuguese seafood chowder was absolutely spectacular. Loaded with seafood, full of deep flavors and a large portion for only $9. I would come back for this dish alone any day of the week! The duck confit terrine was excellent as well, rustic in style but well balanced with the berries both in terrine and as a sauce. Our main dishes failed to disappoint as well. One quibble, my scallops were overdone. They weren't scallop pucks just yet, but in New England I expect scallops cooked gently, not cooked through to well done. However, the seafood risotto they were paired with was 100% spot on. So good in fact, that I was able to overlook the error in the scallops to a large degree and still rate our meal at an overall 5. One final minor detraction was the service. It was professional and sufficient, although at times was a bit curt when faced with rather simple inquiries, such as whether or not the neighboring table had the dinner portion of the special or not. Oh, almost forgot to review the dessert. This is my final test for a restaurant that was able hit (almost) every other note culinarily speaking. If they can pull off dessert too, then they're playing in the majors. Unfortunately, as common with very good restaurants, the dessert was only average despite the rave reviews online. The donuts weren't anything to write home about and the caramel sauce was overheated, despite the excellent ice cream it was all topped with. I would say skip the dessert and have an extra drink instead. All in all this was a wonderful last evening, with a meal that exceeded expectations all over. Will definitely come back! read more

Is this place way overpriced? Yes. But is it worth it? It is. It really is. The food was exquisite. Those artichoke fritters, the broccolini, even the kids sausage alfredo was perfection. Chef, you are a GD gift. We sat outside and it was lovely. (Minus the cars whizzing by nearby.) If you are a "foodie" you will enjoy this place a great deal. All others, do not go.
