Meanwhile you look at your watch order an omelet and enjoy some hot coffee while they make several trips back and forth to the bathroom doing God knows what. You see other patrons doing the same thing. You nod at the sober ones as you sip your hot coffee and they drink their orange juice while watching their friends race yours to the bathroom. This restaurant used to be one of my favorite places, the food was always great and reasonably priced. However, I will not be returning to this restaurant ever again! I went with 3 other people for breakfast, and had the worst experience of my life. Our waitress didn't come to the table for 15 minutes after sitting down, our food (three out of four of the meals, anyway) came before she brought us silverware. My meal came out at least 10 minutes after the rest of the meals, and in two parts. I ordered chicken and waffles, a popular choice. The chicken was brought out 5 minutes after the waffles, and once I took the chicken off the plate to eat it with the waffle that had been getting cold waiting for the chicken, my boyfriend pointed out a hair on the empty plate. Throughout the the meal we found two other hairs in the food on different plates, and my chicken was grey and uncooked in the middle. We were made to walk around the restaurant to find a manager to ask for something to be done about all this. The head manager proceeded to accuse us of lying, as all of his cooks wear hairnets and hats (but nothing to catch the beard hair, like the ones we found). He wouldn't comp our meal, apologize, or make any effort to rectify the situation. Guy Fieri has this place on his list of Triple D hotspots. That along with other places on his list + plus his restaurants don't reach four stars + his 2 new shows = he's got a great TV personality but doesn't know much about food. I got out of working a late event and got a bite here around 11:30pm. I sat at the counter and ordered. My waitress was quiet but sweet. My cheese burger was overcooked and tough and the lettuce, tomato, and red onion were old and faded. But it did come with some friggin' good chicken farfalle soup. Kind of a shady scene and it would have been more comical if I wasn't so hungry and tired. While eating I see a waitress go verbally postal on the Middle Eastern cook calling him "falafel' and threatening to kill him. The manager who was siting right next to me did absolutely nothing. Then this GYNORMOUSLY OBESE cop kept going behind the counter to refill his soda. While walking through, his fat was knocking napkins, condiments, creamers around. I told him 3 and we we were waiting on our third person from our to park the car so we said okay we will abide by their policy. After 3mins of waiting a women of European descent walks in says she has a party of 4 and their was 3 of them the same big guy sat them straight down. I told the big guy that it wasn't right not to make a huge scene he said what you say. I said its not right and you are not right. Afterward We sat down and felt really uncomfortable so we all got up and left. To respond to your response below what you are saying is lies as far as the size of the party that was seated. The host claimed the woman's husband was parking. The woman's husband did not come the 5 mins we sat down before decided not to spend money in your establishment. As far as the staff being intimidated you must be talking about a different person because I only addressed this with your hostess. I told him calmly he was wrong when tried to explain I said sir you are wrong. Then we were seated and after talking with the members of my church we decided to leave. I'm a pastor and we did not cause a scene but we just walked out with no comment left the free water on the table. To lie to try and discredit what I have said is wrong and I hope you all change your heart and the way you treat people because it's 2016 and no one deserves service the way you do business. As far as your staff being 70% African American. I don't know if it's true or not but on Sunday morning I only saw 3 African Americans out of a staff at least 15. Really terrible customer service. We sat down and got two cups of water. Then... nothing. They ignored us for over 20 minutes while people around us were getting served. Makes you wonder if the server bad some personal grudge against my wife and me. After being ignored for too much and assuming raising a fuss would result in our food promptly spat in, we just left. No one bothered asking why we were leaving without ordering when we left because, again, their service was terrible. read more

I've been wanting to go to the White Palace Grill since we moved to the South Loop, but found an unwilling taker in my boyfriend. After I noticed signs featuring Guy Fieri on the front of the restaurant, however, I decided to renew my pleas and finally convinced you-know-who to go. And he liked it! Funny that! White Palace Grill is a throwback to the days of old, when waitresses buzzed around the diner on rollerskates and milkshakes came with your meal (don't expect that here, it's just a reference). This bright restaurant has a very 1950s feel that I loved. And the food was exactly what you would expect from a diner - burgers, fries, and breakfast. Actually, the menu is quite expansive, and while I can't speak to most offerings, I can say that if you go the burger/fry route, you'll leave happy. The waitresses aren't the friendliest people I've ever come across, but the manager was extremely polite and welcoming. As many people have noted, White Palace Grill is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and it's almost always hopping. But I've never noticed a line, probably because service is extremely fast. For those complaining about the restaurant refusing to split a check or requiring pre-payment (I would too if a group of drunkards came into my diner at 3:00 in the morning), those rules are very clearly posted on the walls of the diner, so please don't feign surprise or stupidity. read more

Sassy service, no frills food, and anything comforting your stomach can desire. Of course, I had a lovely grilled cheese, served just the way I was craving it: two thick slices of white bread and some melty processed cheese, perfectly toasted. Add a side of crinkle-cut fries and a cup of homemade veggie soup and I was healed! (All pink chicken references aside, thank you very much.) A Texas skillet, patty melt, and French toast also went down with abandon at my table, along with two of the largest chocolate shakes this gal has ever seen (they even put whipped cream and a cherry on the extra glass!) I had to write my review for White Palace Grill today after seeing the news about Blagojevich saying he's "blacker than Barack Obama." The news crews wanted to find black people to interview about this comment, and I could immediately tell they went to White Palace Grill. Hilarious. You know how Emma on Glee walks around disinfecting everything? That's usually how I feel when I walk into diners - armed with antibacterial gel and trying not to convulse into an itch attack. However, White Palace Grill is a CLEAN diner. CLEAN!!! Maybe it's all of the bright white fluorescent lights that make me think the place is clean. Or the sharp red and white tiles. Or the fact that it's 3 am and I can't believe I'm wide awake with friends who want to eat eggs rather than watch each other play Xbox. Either way...::wide eyed::...CLEAN. I had a hard time deciding what I wanted from the glorious 2-sided, laminated menu: one side for breakfast, the other side for lunch/dinner options. Initially indecisive, my friends started 20-questions with me which led me to want bacon. I got the 2222 Breakfast: 2 eggs over easy, 2 pancakes, 2 sausages, 2 bacon. Fast service, an inexpensive menu that covers a HUGE range of things, a giant jacked-up parking garage right behind it, and great service. I seem to be one of the few reviewers who has been here sober, during the day for a normal meal. When my parents were in town for graduation we decided to go here one afternoon to grab a bite to eat, and I was honestly in awe. The food here is wonderful. So fresh and homemade tasting, I almost couldn't believe it. First of all, my mom had their chicken noodle soup, which was the soup of the day. If you have been raised on campbell's or never had homemade chicken soup drop what you are doing RIGHT NOW and rush to White Palace because they know exactly how to do it. Real chicken broth, with fresh crisp vegetables and actual, recognizable, large pieces of chicken. I was pretty much blown away by it. I had an omelet, mostly because they one of my favorite foods, and it was exactly the way I like it. Perfectly prepared eggs, with the contents having been sauteed prior to folding them in the egg...which makes SUCH a difference. Also, LOTS of cheese, which really is the best part of an omelet anyway :) Their sandwiches are excellent and really, I can't think of a single thing there I wouldn't want to eat. The waitress was the traditional mom-type diner waitress who always had a great quip prepared. And when she heard I had just graduated from college she told the owner, who wes actually there in the kitchen supervising, he gave me a free milkshake. OH MY LORD this milkshake was thick, creamy and obviously made just for me. It came with whip cream and a cherry on top. This is everything that a girl could possibly want in one cup. Heaven in iced diary form. So, basically they are a really friendly restaurant, with excellent food and an adorable dine atmosphere. My boyfriend and I came to this diner for dinner. We were excited thee was a Guy Fieri poster on one of their walls. This place MUST be good if he was here, right? And it was, mostly. EXCEPT FOR ONE THING. I ordered a deluxe philly cheese steak sandwich. The deluxe option included soup, the sandwich with fries or fruit, and a side of lettuce and pickles. I got everything I wanted except the lettuce. When I asked the waitress, she said my order doesn't include it. She got pretty mad when I pointed out what deluxe meant straight from the menu and proceeded to make rude comments in Spanish to another waitress about us (she didn't know I spoke Spanish too). In the end, I was charged an extra dollar just to get the lettuce for my sandwich that it was supposed to come with in the first place. This place won't receive one star as they try I imagine and perhaps I came in when better chefs were on rotation. That being said I think Guy Fieri is full of shit when he came and ranked this place so highly. The burger I ordered was mediocre at best and a bit on the over done side; the veggies that came with were what you may have had in grammar school as a kid and obviously straight out of a can; they were soupy, tough and sad looking. The soup options were clam chowder and chicken noodle; I opted for the former and learned that there are tomato based clam chowders; the soup was average. The second dish I ordered was the Grecian Tilapia, and from the menu description lead me to believe it was expertly prepared and high on taste; I don't know what the hell I was thinking as it was anything but. The saving grace to this entree was the greek rice that made it passable. The fish was over cooked, burnt on one end and looked like the cap came undone on the seasoning bottle; something akin to a young girl discovering makeup for the first time, too much. The nail in the coffin was when I asked the manager if I could charge my phone as it was on 16% and I figured I would be here for at least an hour; he asked if I was a customer and I motioned to the table directly in front of him with my winter attire and open menu. He said no. I just stared at him and took my seat. This review was written on my dying phone after the meal had been finished. I could forgive shit service or bad food, but not both; the twenty minute wait time to be served would have been dissmissable had other things been different. I opt you check out laurence fishery for some decent seafood on canal and cermak as that was where I intended to go originally, but hunger won out for me. We never got a chance to eat so maybe it's not fair to review, but I really don't think this place is worth the bother. It's just a dirty typical city diner with typical greasy menu items. The reason we didn't get to eat is because it was 30 below and a homeless person was in the doorway. My bf offered to buy him some soup and asked him to come in. The waitress and fry cook told him to leave. It was past midnight and we were the only patrons, so it's not like it would have bothered other customers. We sat down and looked at menus which were crusted with old food splatters (was that supposed to be for sampling?) and my bf stewed about the situation until he just got so upset we had to go so he could offer a ride to the shelter to the vagrant. The waitress kind of gestured to me while we were leaving and tried to explain that there was a history with this particular person and we should watch out. This is a pretty typical greasy spoon diner. However, it is a pretty good one. Best of all, it is open 24h and really comes alive at 3-4am when the late-nighters make it here...that's my favorite time to visit...3:30am on Sunday morning; the crowd is diverse and fun. The rest of the time it serves up all the good diner dishes you'd expect (at good diner prices you would also expect). The burgers are decent, as are the fries and milk shakes. You can get a good breakfast here all day long, though remember that Sundays are an inaccessable mess, thanks to the Maxwell Street Market...though if you're looking for that car radio which went missing last week...you can kill two birds and track it down after you come for breakfast. That said, I am very happy that this place not only survived the gentrification changes and strip mall big boxes which have come to the South Loop, but it has been rehabbed and is a bit less dingy from the effort. read more

Stopped by here after taking a mega bus to Chicago and before I left for the airport. The staff was very polite and accommodated me with a table where I could keep my luggage while eating. Service was very quick. I'll be honest I came here because I saw that Guy Fieri had featured this restaurant on his show and I'm a bit of a fan. You can definitely tell that this show has been on TV because they have memorabilia everywhere. They also have a vast menu but I have settled on the blueberry pancakes and I definitely was not disappointed. The quantity is definitely more than one person can eat but I tried my best. The blueberry compote on top of the pancakes was a little too runny for my taste but it was still delicious with the warm pancakes, cool whip cream and syrup that came with the entrée. I'm glad I went here instead of stopping by a chain and I definitely have to agree with Guy Fieri: this is a restaurant worth featuring. read more

The loss of two stars is for the chicken strips. They're far from something straight from a chicken, more of a McDonald's McNugget kind of chicken. They've been dissected, some stuff added, then squashed back together in the shape of a chicken tender. The taste is marginal at best, and the texture is fair. Stools up by the diner bar, and booths, and a large back room full of tables. (Larger than first meets the eye.) We got carry out. Took 10 minutes from the time we gave our order. Menu was about 4 pages longs with a little of everything in it. The portions are large. I tried the White Palace Grill on the recommendation of a friend. The place had been featured on Food Networks, Dives, Driven ins, and Whatever. The service was fun and friendly. The menu had many options to meet everyones needs I felt. I went with a skillet with scrambled eggs. Breakfast has become my new favorite meal and I felt this place was near one of my tops for breakfasts. I plan on returning when possible the only deterrent is the distance from my house. The day we went we even got to see a show. The police, who were in the restaurant eating, had to remove an unruly patron which added to the ambiance of the place. I was told Guy Fieri had dinners which was televised such as the greek chicken and veal parmesian and on my next make or break visit I will order along those lines since so far i'm not very moved by white palace enough to want to frequent it. The service and establishment were nice for the time I went but I can tell for weekends and afterhours its probably a madhouse, and nothing wrong with that. Yeah Buddy!! Diners Drive-ins and Dives didn't disappoint when they visited this place. This place is busy, busy - but thats ok. Anything worth waiting for has to be good. Went on a Sunday morning around 10am after a night of Chicago Pizza and after drinking enough beer to qualify for a water boarding warm up session. Needless to say - my body was in serious need of carbs and maybe a pedialite drip... so, pancakes were in order. Ordered the full stack of buttermilk pancakes (5), 2 over easy eggs, a side of bacon an coffee. We sat at the bar - so we got a great look at the workings of this iconic location. The waitress' were great, friendly helpful, full of whit and most importantly a smile. Had a great conversation with them while waiting for our food. Food came in about 10-15 minutes - hot, delicious and cooked perfectly. I can pack away some serious food - and these 5 pancakes proved to be too much for me. Leaving a small amount for the garbage. Parking can be difficult, street parking - meters are 7 days a week and its $4 an hour to park. Waitstaff was terrible, we saw our waitress 3 times, 1 when she took our order, 1 when she brought our food and when she brought the check. I wouldn't recommend this place at all. But if you go during the week, or in the middle of the night, like any good diner customer should, then it's fantastic! Order anything off the menu at any time of the day. I so wanted to like this place. My friends and I always pass this up after a night of drinking and have always wanted to try it. I finally saw it on Diners, drives ins and Dives and gave me the urge to try it even more. Well after another night of drinking we remembered this place, so we came here and we will never go back. I don't mind going to Dive places, if the good is good, but it really wasn't all that. Much would have preferred Hollywood Grill. My omelet was gross looking and tasted way too oily, corned beef hash was waaaaaaaaay too salty, it's a salty meat as it is and I think they dumped a pile of salt on it even more, my friends weren't to pleased with their meals either. However, it's diner food at 4 in the morning, we really don't have high expectations, but the reason why we will NEVER go back... the VERY big family of rats that live near the restaurant. The place could have 2 entrances, but seeming that one entrance is blocked by a family of rats, that entrance is closed off. We did not see the rats until we were served. They sat us by a window in the back and we noticed that the bottom part of the windows are borded by cardboard. we didn't know why, we figured, "maybe it's a drafty place" then we saw the rats. at least 10, no joke! Apparently there is a dumpster back there which of course attracts a lot of rats. Its just not something I wanna see while eating, drunk or sober. White Palace Grill has been open in Chicago since 1939. It received national attention when Guy Fieri stopped by for an episode of Diners Drive Ins and Dives. Guy made this place out to be a must visit when in Chicago. Guy couldn't have been more wrong. The pictures speak for themselves. White Palace Grill serves diner fare. The best thing I had was the Hormel chili. All the food we ordered was dry and bland except my sister's barbecue beef brisket. The barbecue beef brisket was corned beef smothered in barbecue sauce. It was disgusting and alarming that people have been ordering the dish for over 50 years. Adding insult to injury they serve Ore Ida fries at White Palace. Ore Ida fries are hands down the worst form of fried potato. The meat inside is never fried enough. 9 times out of ten the food accompanying the Ore Ida fries on your plate is garbage too. They are a poor menu decision on chef's part. Not bad, but not amazing. Extra thick French toast is not extra thick, although tasty. Overall clean restaurant. Service was ok - just like everything else here not bad, but not great. If you are in a pinch this place will do. read more

I've been going to this place since I was in high school and it is still one of my favorite food spots. Open 24 hours and unusually fast service and wait time it's one of the better choices for breakfast especially on weekends. I've never waited more than 10 minutes for a table or my food and it always comes out hot and tasty. Simple and good food, cheap price, nice people. And they have coffe-mate creamers which I love to use so much even when I come here at night I get decaf coffee just so I can have it. Classic diner feel. 24/7 and HUGE menu. Could be a go-to place for breakfast/lunch/dinner if it was closer to my area. Not the fanciest place since it's been there for a while, but who cares because reasonable prices and our waitress was super thoughtful and nice. I got the chicken and waffles which was pretty decent except they were just chicken strips instead of traditional. They accidentally made me two eggs (yay), and the french toast was dense and filling, "melts in your mouth" as my friend said. But overall, the taste of the food was predictable. Typical diner, but would possibly come again to try other things on the menu since that was my first time. read more
