When my friend and I decided to come here, I was really excited by all the rave I've heard about this place. I heard this place was beyond underrated and served pretty decent diner food. Maybe it was what we ordered, but I left this diner with a less than okay impression. We ordered grilled cheese and strawberry Belgium waffles with whip cream. The grilled cheese wasn't melted all the way and I was still able to see the unmelted slices. Also, the waffles looked good at first, but the whip cream melted way to fast. It just showed me the quality of the item they use for the food isn't the best. I don't know if I will give this place another shot. Good, sweet diner gods. That is who have blessed this place. Came in after a long day of walking around and shopping July 4th sales. My fiance and I were pretty tired (hungover really) still from July 4th and didn't want any silly salad business. We needed comfort food. White Palace was there to deliver. We each thought we were going to go for breakfast for dinner - perhaps some waffles, an omelette, or a skillet of some kind. Then I saw it...I saw their chicken and waffles option. I had been debating if I truly wanted breakfast or if I should go for a savory dinner... It's just like that girl from the Old El Paso Hard and Soft Tacos commercial. WHY NOT BOTH? So yes, I went for it. And it was glorious. My fiance decided to have their Gypsy Baquet skillet and it was also incredibly tasty. Everything about our meals was classic, felt like home and made just right. No fancy fixins or additions - just good ol' diner food. I don't know why this place has such low ratings! I found the food to be delicious, and I shared a skillet with my BFF & we were both full and satisfied! The place is pretty janky, but I like the diner atmosphere. There are some weird rules about pre-paying if you have a party of 5 or more and paying $3 per person if in a booth. Second visit here was as great as the first. We had a very friendly waitress who was on top of keeping the coffee fresh. Our food arrived quickly and was hot and fresh. I had the veggie skillet topped with sunny side up eggs and rye toast. The skillet had a huge amount and variety of veggies- broccoli, spinach, onions, peppers, mushrooms. Excellent, friendly service and the food comes out fast! My mom loved her fried tilapia and the garlic bread. My patty melt was hot and delicious. This was by far one of the top three breakfasts I have EVER HAD!! Pancakes light and fluffy, eggs cooked perfectly, meat full of flavor, bacon crispy, sausage juicy. And my wife's biscuits and gravy were amazing, the best she's ever had, her words! Plus our food was out like four minutes after we ordered, no lie, and all piping hot and fresh, nothing sitting under a heat lamp. They have a lot of things on their menu, which is a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you look at it. I came here with my gf and she ordered the chicken and waffles, which she was really pleased with it. I ordered the Philly cheese sandwich. The sandwich looked really nice, but the beef didn't have much flavor in it. I think its because they cooked the beef in small pieces which caused it to get over cooked. Also, do not order the grits unless you want to eat it with hot sauce. The grits were really bland that you had to eat it with other toppings in it. I found the service and food to be really lacking. I ordered the biscuits and gravy, by far the worst biscuits and gravy (and that's saying something as most people in the north do not know how to cook true gravy). My friend had the burger and it didn't even look like real meat. Another review mentioned the tomatoes not being fresh which is very accurate. We moved to Chicago 6 months ago and have passed the White Palace Grill on countless occasions. Some part of me thought it would be totally overrated, but I was WRONG! I mean, it's diner food. We weren't expecting a gourmet experience, but we were so pleasantly surprised. One of the best grilled cheeses (diner style) I've ever had and by far some of the best service I've experienced. Our server (I think her name was Deylin?) was amazing. Super attentive, but not too much, insanely kind and funny. Loved her! And last thing to note. This was probably one of the most diverse spaces we've been in since we moved. Our biggest issue with Chicago, having come from NYC and the Bay Area, is how ridiculously segregated this city is. No, the outstanding part is that you get the full menu of perfectly decent dinner fare 24/7, "3AM on Christmas in a blizzard." Pancakes and omelets at 11PM, or steak for breakfast. Can't beat that for convenience and cravings. Once, a dining companion ordered chocolate chip pancakes with the chips scattered on top instead of baked into the batter as per usual. So, kitchen staff may vary. The waitstaff are usually friendly, familiar, attentive, but it's sometimes a mixed bag. They use a delightful vintage cash drawer that looks like it was installed when the building's cornerstone was in 1938... but hey, still works! Stopped by here after taking a mega bus to Chicago and before I left for the airport. The staff was very polite and accommodated me with a table where I could keep my luggage while eating. Service was very quick. I'll be honest I came here because I saw that Guy Fieri had featured this restaurant on his show and I'm a bit of a fan. You can definitely tell that this show has been on TV because they have memorabilia everywhere. They also have a vast menu but I have settled on the blueberry pancakes and I definitely was not disappointed. The quantity is definitely more than one person can eat but I tried my best. The blueberry compote on top of the pancakes was a little too runny for my taste but it was still delicious with the warm pancakes, cool whip cream and syrup that came with the entrée. Ok, so maybe the Windy City Rollers didn't exactly join us for the post meal, but I was so inspired by their kickass attitude and burly brandishing of tattoos and skirts, that I needed some eggs. The Texas Skillet, is like...phenomenal. No really, it is. Chili, eggs, cheese. Is there any better combination? Served in a real, cast iron skillet, hot to my shiny red plastic covered booth. Mmmmmm. hit the spot, especially after turning my nose up at $5 hot dogs at UIC Pavilion. For realz? $5 hot dogs, get out of town. I got the Tex Skillet at WPG for like, $7, and it was enough for 4 people. Of course, I ate it all myself. Don't judge me! Our waitress was delightful, which is no easy feat at a 24 hour diner anywhere. She was spunky, even. Whipped up some fabu chocolate shakes (with extras) and refilled on the DC's more than adequately. I assume they get quite the array of characters in here...in our short experience we saw a guy totally decked out in Navajo poncho and long beard, and a breakdancer. A few funny signs: 1. diners between the hours of 1am and 6am must prepay. I wonder, how do you know how much you will eat? Do you give them a credit card like at a hotel? Interesting. I've never prepaid a meal. 2. There is a 2 hour time limit on booths. I get it. Those booths are comfy, we were tempted to stay an extra half hour past eating/commiserating just to see if they'd kick us out. They did not. After day 2 of having muddy fun at Lollapalooza we were starving, every place in downtown was packed with people getting their grub on. We decided to find a place that was not so much in downtown. Yelp to the rescue, we found this diner right away, sure it was after 11:00pm and was a couple of blocks away, plus going over a bridge but with the stellar reviews, photos and not to mention everyone's favorite TV chief and host Guy Fieri visited this place and even had them on his show it must be a great place to eat at! This cozy little diner sits on the corner of Canal St and West Roosevelt Road; it's everything that I was hoping for: Double doors (for those cold windy, snowy, or rainy days) Sweet with just a hint of mid-west/ east coast attitude servers and hostess ("hi guys, how many" pops gum) Juke Boxes on the table with all the hits of yesterday The seats were a ruby red with glitter and the tables looked like they could have been from the 40's or 50's. Our server was the nicest person we could have asked for. If only I could remember her name, I would have given her props! She took our drink orders and let us look over their rather large menu, which consisted of: Breakfast (served anytime) Appetizers Lunch and dinner They even have blue-plate specials!!! Dessert Was having a hard time trying to decide if I wanted the Midnight Train-Three Southern Fried Chicken Tenders and one original waffle OR The 2x2x2x2 breakfast: 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausages, and 2 buttermilk pancakes Oh the choices, and if it was up to me and I could eat anything I wanted and not gain a ton of weight I would have ordered both! But because I do have a rather small tummy, I went with the 2x2x2x2 breakfast! After placing our orders, I had a small request to ask our server. I am picky when it comes to how my scrambled eggs are cooked so I asked her if she could ask the chief if he could make sure not to burn my eggs. She smiled and said of course I can. She even followed up with me after she placed the order saying that the chief could do that for me and it was not a problem. People watching is a must here, you have your fellow Lollapalooza-ers, bar hoppers who need to sober up, the clubbing peeps who just want to eat and sit down for awhile, cops, hipsters, college kids, families and other fun loving people that like to come out late night to eat. They do have strict rules here for after 12am. No split checks and I believe 2 cups of coffee per person at the table, if you are in a group, you all have to order food you cannot just sit there and not eat or just have water. It took awhile for our food to be delivered to our table, but that's okay we were in no rush to head back to the car. The server returned awhile later with our food, I was impressed my eggs were yellow and fluffy no brown burn marks anywhere! Make no mistake this plate was not small by any means. There was plenty to share if you had to. The eggs were great (probably the best I have had since I was younger), the pancakes were fluffy and big, bacon was crunchy and the sausages had a hint of spice! Service was great; we were checked on enough to make us feel like a true customer. When it was time to pay the manager at the counter was sweet she kept calling me mami and sweetheart. I've hit up White Palace a few times, and my negligence to review it ends now. Let me cut to the chase. I think this place is a tad over-hyped. I grew up and still live in an area where diners are abundant. I've never hard to worry because in my neighborhood, diners are operating around the clock, filling their obligation to society by making sure drunks don't go home on an empty stomach. I truly am blessed. No, the American diners I've grown accustom to may not have enchiladas or tacos on the menu. But truthfully, that concept scares me a little. If I want Mexican food, there's plenty of late night taquerias open, fulfilling that same duty. Suffice it to say, I don't look at White Palace as place to come out of the way for. I've had everything from burgers, grilled cheese, chicken fried steak, chili, and a wide array of appetizers. It's all hearty and good stuff. But as I said. Not something to make a special trip for, in my eyes. But I have 20/40 vision. So if you'd rather go and find out yourself instead of taking my word, I wont be mad at you. If I were to give White Palace a rating it'd be NC-17. You definitely don't want to bring the kids, but if you're looking for some late night entertainment that's not a strip club then this is diner theater at it's finest. The waitress was not interested in us from the get go. She asked us how we were doing as she walked by without even looking at us. She looked annoyed that we were there and when I asked her to give me a suggestion she gave me attitude. I asked her what she liked better the chopped steak or the chicken fried steak. Her response "I don't eat pork" UMM last time I checked that was beef, i would of thought someone in food service would know the difference but alas I was wrong.
