    Chicken Gumbo
    Jose C.

I placed an order of their Jambayala and their Chicken Gumbo. It's essentially a takeout place only, although they do have some tables in there, but seems uninviting and away from the entrance. The food was ready before the promised time and pickup process was smooth. The prices are definitely on the higher said, especially for a takeout only place. They got dine in prices here if you know what I mean. The food was good, which is important but I still felt I overpaid. The jambalaya came with shrimp, chicken, sausage and green & red bell peppers. The rice was cooked to perfection and overall a very properly made and delicious dish. The gumbo came with your traditional chicken and andouille sausage with rice and scallions. The gumbo was flavorful as well? But would have either preferred more rice or the rice to be served on the side so you could add it yourself at home. I would definitely come back for this gumbo. I also bought a caramel cake slice which they get from Brown Sugar Bakery. Definitely a must order. I'm not sure when I'll return, but if I'm ever in this area again, especially in this cold, that gumbo will be the first thing on my mind.

If you're looking for a southern inspired way to grab lunch or get something for dinner or even something to grab and go while you're on the run, I highly recommend this place. I actually ordered for them twice in one week because it was so good. The catfish sliders. I also got salad from there as well. Me and my walking buddy were out for a walk and by the time we got there, our food was already ready, which was great. Also, this food is super budget friendly with the catfish sliders being $9.99. That is such a deal for fries and two catfish sliders yummy. They have ample dining area but street parking honestly is limited, which is why I feel like people are mostly picking up to go or getting food delivered. A lot of people were talking about them on Facebook in the South Loop group so I had to check them out. You can actually see inside the kitchen where they're cooking stuff too, so there's transparency on that end as well. They they also have other specials such as a chicken sandwich or a hamburger deal for like 5. From salads to gumbo's entrées, such as pasta Alfredo there is everything on this menu. It's owned by the same guy who owns virtue so you know the food is good.

Have been wanting to try this restaurant since last year; finally got the chance this afternoon. Very inviting with all of the colorful, welcoming decor on the outside. Once inside, you are immediately hit with the smell of home cooking with lots of spices in the air. My order included a honey glazed salmon meal that came with mashed cauliflower and green beans. I also ordered the pork chop meal that came with two pork chops, rice with green peas and roasted brussel sprouts. I also ordered a side of cornbread that comes with two small pieces and honey butter. To top the meal off, I ordered caramel cake slices. When I finally made it home and was able to eat, I first noticed how nice the portions were. Enough for two days. Lol. Then I noticed how pretty it was plated in the to-go containers. Just because your order is to-go doesn't mean it can't look good. Anyway, everything was delicious and flavorful. I have lunch for tomorrow. Two things to know; this establishment is carry out only and the have a really cool loyalty program. Sign up, save money off your next purchase.

So I need to update this. The Chicken Alfredo is addictive, and I sometimes add shrimp which takes it to another level. Definitely try this! I have ordered from this place so many times now as well as their sister restaurant Virtue. Top-notch food for sure. Other amazing things I've tried are: - gumbo - rotisserie chicken - honey fried chicken - pork chop meal They have not let me down yet. Please don't change that darn Alfredo pasta dish! It's perfect with the right amount of chicken, sauce, everything.

Our kitchen is under renovation and we are sick of takeout, but we decided to grab food from the only James Beard winner from Chicago this year...Erick Williams did not disappoint. We've been to his sit down restaurant, Virtue, but weren't sure what to expect from here. So flavorful and comforting and generous portions to boot! It was delivered nice and hot and we ate until we were beyond full and still had leftovers. This is not your average takeout. I think they only offer to go, but we will absolutely make this part of our regular rotation.

I was extremely surprised by this place! It's mostly carry out but they do have a couple of tables on the mac n cheese side. The portions were big and made with care. The absolute highlight was the chicken gumbo and the cornbread. The cornbread is more cake texture than a traditional cornbread you're used to but it's so good and addicting. The Cajun pasta was also so good! Highly recommend. It was quite quick and tasty.

I thought the Mustard Seed had some great food, I have ordered twice from them, what needs to happen is that who ever owns the mustard seed needs to fire all of his employees, They do not know how to cook, I ordered the honey butter chicken with a Caesar salad and mashed potatoes, this food looked like a kid had been playing with his mother food. I also ordered a Turkey Burger for my mom, the burger was burnt and the cheese looked like an inner tube. I will not be buying or ordering any more food from them. I advise the people please don't eat at the Mustard Seed Kitchen

Solid. Food is always flavorful. Small casual dine-in area but mainly take-out. Order on-line. My regular. My kids love their chicken tenders.

    Cajun fettuccine with added zucchini

I ordered a cajun fettuccine and ate it like I hadn't eaten in days. And afterwards, I texted my partner to tell her it was one of the best pastas I've had. Mustard Seed Kitchen is Chef Erick Williams second restaurant. If you've been to his first, Virtue, you know what to expect. The food is excellent. It's dinner table plates prepared by grandma, only grandma happens to have a James Beard award. The food at Virtue, and now at Mustard Seed, is comfort food. It has comfort baked in but has a zest of newness; just enough for you to taste the edge of your comfort zone. Unlike Virtue, Mustard Seed is designed for takeout. It's the perfect place to order for delivery while still looking to eat right. I ordered from Doordash. Nearly 20 minutes door-to-door and the food arrived hot. When you order online, you can choose the sauce you'd like. In the description for this dish, it says its made with the creamy tomato and so I didn't venture to change it. I added on zucchini because I like zucchini and needed some extra vegetables. The cajun spices truly transform this dish, it makes the pasta. I tend to like spicy food and expected it to be spicier, but it had just the right amount of kick. I think even if you can't handle much spice, you'll enjoy this pasta. The shrimp was blackened just right; it was so good that I'm tempted to add on extra shrimp next time I order. The serving size is probably just enough for two. I set some aside had and had a healthy portion later. But if I was ordering for two, I'd probably add on an extra side to be safe - this place looks to have some amazing sides. If you knew nothing about this place - no clue who invented the recipes, what the business stood for - you might look at the price while scrolling through the menu and be sticker shocked. $20 for a takeout pasta on Doordash is laughable in Chicago. And this place doesn't even have the excuse that they're charging for takeout what they charge for a dine-in experience, it's a takeout kitchen! However, I encourage you to give it a try if you can. The $5 you'll save ordering a cheaper alternative elsewhere won't come close to what you'll have missed out.

Had the best time at mustard seed kitchen in south Loop, Chicago IL. Thank you for treating me like a queen ! @midwestmunching on Instagram for more This spot is new, with a takeout concept focusing on everyday eats that are approachable and affordable created by James beard -nominated Chef Erick Williams of @virtuerestaurantchi Got the steak, salmon, rotini shrimp pasta, mixed greens salad, brussel sprouts, fried chicken sandwich, gumbo, corn bread, and chocolate cake Everything was DELICIOUS and cooked perfectly. From time to time, I think about the honey mustard salmon and skirt steak SKIRT STEAK: perfectly grilled with herb relish + super crispy potatoes. HONEY MUSTARD SALMON : comes with asparagus and creamed corn. Delicious ROTINI SHRIMP PASTA: tomatoes + zucchini, onion, asparagus and FILLED with shrimp. Spicy & packed as you can see. Comes with garlic bread MIXED GREEN SALAD: Comes with crispy onion and a vinegrette BRUSSEL SPROUTS : char grilled perfectly, lightly sweet and carmalized GUMBO : not too salty and packed with chicken, andouille sausage, rice & veggies FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH : a signature of theirs, with special sauce, super crispy chicken & housemade spices CORN BREAD - comes with butter, nice and moist and had bits of corn too CHOCOLATE CAKE : super moist and decadent. Really rich and fudgy, which I LOVED They have housemade drinks like southern sweet tea & lemonade. Super fresh and made daily, nothing done overnight The flavors were spectacular! Highly recommend the salmon, steak, fried chicken sandwich, lemonade & chocolate cake!

The staff were really welcoming, for an early morning. I got the hot chocolate. Honestly that's exactly what I needed that morning. It had that real Mexican chocolate taste. Thick, creamy, smooth and rich. The cinnamon came through warm but not too strong, plus a little extra on top that hit your nose before the first sip. Sweet and it almost had this slight earthy note too... hard to explain but good. It even had that little design on top, like the ones they do on cappuccinos. Didn't expect that but it was cool. I finished it slow. Didn't wanna rush it. Just sat there taking small sips and enjoying it while it was still hot.

It feels upscale but still comfortable. Service was attentive and paced well, especially considering it was Restaurant Week and fairly busy. The Restaurant Week menu offered a great variety. We started with the crispy arancini, which were perfectly golden on the outside and creamy inside with a rich glaze that added a nice depth of flavor. The wild mushroom risotto had great earthy flavor and was very rich, definitely a heavier dish but satisfying if you are in the mood for something indulgent. The gnocchi were soft and pillowy with fresh basil and roasted tomatoes that brightened the dish nicely. For entrées, the filet mignon was cooked beautifully, tender and medium rare with a flavorful sauce that complemented it well. The chicken parmesan had a solid crisp and good seasoning, though it leaned more classic than standout. Portions overall felt fair for the prix fixe price. Dessert was a sweet finish. The tiramisu was light, creamy, and not overly heavy, which we appreciated. Overall, 4 stars. Great ambiance and solid execution across the board. While nothing completely blew us away, it was a well done Restaurant Week experience and I would definitely come back to try more from their regular menu.

We chose to dine at Girl & the Goat in Chicago, a restaurant we had never visited before. The acclaimed restaurant by renowned chef Stephanie Izard truly lived up to its stellar reputation! One of the first things we appreciated was the convenience of the restaurant's valet parking, located right by the front patio. At $22 for up to four hours and $26 for four to eight hours, the rates were quite reasonable for the area. As soon as the three of us stepped inside Girl & the Goat (we had made a reservation for 6:30 pm on a Friday), we were warmly greeted by one of the two friendly hostesses, and were promptly led to a comfortable four-top table with a banquette and two chairs along the wall. We felt fortunate to have one of the better tables in the dining room, as some of the others were positioned very close together. The nearby two-top tables, in particular, were quite small and placed only a short distance from ours. The restaurant's rustic-industrial décor was dark but trendy and stylish, the lively and vibrant vibe was warm and welcoming. However, I have to mention that it was really loud in the dining room, as guests seemed to be enjoying themselves and talked loudly.  It was hard to hear our server and the staff who delivered and explained the dishes to us.  Our server, Yazmin, was extremely friendly and attentive.  It was very sweet of her to wish us a happy anniversary both in the beginning  and at the end of the meal.  She also checked in on us several times during the evening.  Now, on to the food and drinks. I started with a glass of the NA Sparkling Rosé ($17), which was light, crisp, and quite refreshing. My husband ordered a glass of Le Colture Prosecco ($18), while our daughter chose the Sun Kid ($18). She enjoyed her drink, although she felt the portion was a bit small, as the glass was filled with a lot of ice that took up much of the space. Since the restaurant offers small to medium plates which are shareable, Yazmin advised us to get 5 to 6 dishes for 3 people to share.  We decided to get 5 savory dishes and 3 desserts to share: Savory dishes: - Chickpea Fritters ($20), goat yogurt, green chutney, sev spice crunch, pickled rhubarb. - Pan Roasted Halibut ($37), miso-Marcona almond butter, spring onion blueberry nuoc cham. - Roasted Pig Face ($28), sunny side egg, tamarind, cilantro, red wine-maple, potato stix. - Goat Empanadas ($24), smoked tomato-corn salsa, roasted poblano crema queso fresco. - Confit Goat Belly ($38), strawberry goat braise, smoked yogurt drizzle, pickled strawberries. Desserts: - Vacation, Please! ($16), toasted coconut crunch, lemon passion fruit sorbet, rum-soaked pineapple cake. - Berry Yummy Par-tea ($16), earl grey soaked sponge cake, yuzu curd, spiced blackberries. - Chocolate Basil Brownie Bash ($16), olive oil semifreddo, chocolate fennel crunch, basil granita. The meal was just phenomenal!  All the savory dishes were cooked perfectly with bold flavors; the meats were tender and full of flavors.  There were dishes that we normally would not have ordered if we saw them on menus of other restaurants.  Here, we tried them and were delighted that we did!  Our consensus is that Roasted Pig Face is our most favorite! It is everything we love in a comfort dish -- crispy on the outside, meltingly tender inside, and packed with rich, balanced flavor.  We will definitely order this again!  The Confit Goat Belly is a close second, with buttery, fall-apart meat and just the right balance of richness, acidity, and crunch. For dessert, "Vacation, Please!" is the one that we will always come back for. The toasted coconut crunch adds texture, the lemon passion fruit sorbet brings a refreshing tang, and the rum-soaked pineapple cake ties it all together with just the right amount of sweetness.  The other two desserts that we ordered were also very good.  The staff even brought out a scoop of Chocolate Ice Cream on the house, with two lit candles to celebrate our anniversary - a thoughtful touch that made the evening even more memorable.  This dessert spread was the perfect ending to an incredible meal. I'd like to mention that the restaurant added a 4% surcharge to the bill, which the customer may request to have the surcharge remove if you choose.  We let them keep it. We spent about two hours at the restaurant. The savory dishes came out very quickly, the pace probably was even a tad too fast, but the desserts made up for it by taking a longer time.  We did not mind as we were still full, and had time to enjoy the ambiance more.  I would say it is a restaurant great for group gathering and celebratory functions, but not so much for intimate romantic date night.  All in all, it was a wonderful dinner, we look forward to returning again.

I was there the other week (I've been here at least five times before), and a busser--not our…read morewaiter--started clearing both of our plates before we were finished eating. We each only had a couple of bites left, but it definitely gave off an "okay, you're done now" vibe. Then he went to take the green beans (arguably the cult classic on the menu), and we still had more than half of them left. I had to stop him and say, "Yeah, we're not done with those. We paid for them. Can you put them in a to-go box instead?" For context, it was about 20 minutes before closing, but we ordered with plenty of time and were already eating with a "get in, eat, and get out" mindset. I've just never had someone at a restaurant start clearing plates while we were still actively eating--without asking, "Are you finished?" "Can I clear this?" or "Would you like a to-go box?" It was just... "You're done, these are leaving now." We were there for less than 45 minutes, left about 15 minutes before closing, and spent over $200 (not including the tip). With so many options in Chicago, I don't see myself coming back here.

The calm, bright Mediterranean interior welcomes you into what feels like a cool summer day. Started with the black truffle puff bread -- felt like eating a cheese pizza with anchovies, deep and umami and honestly some of the best bread I've ever had. Would come back just for that alone. The tasting menu delivered from start to finish. The Manchego cracker came out crispy with a light creamy interior from the cheese and a hint of saltiness from the ham on top. The roasted mussel toast was next abundant mussels paired with Calabrian chili butter that took it over the edge, one of my favorites from the meal. The pasta was fresh and light with a deeply flavored sausage that complemented it well. The prime picanha closed out the savory courses perfectly tender, juicy, and the romesco sauce alongside brought a nice lightly sweet and smoky balance. Dessert was the pistachio which I don't typically gravitate toward but this one was well balanced and a nice finish to a great tasting menu.
