I'll be Back! I loved this diner. They had me immediately as I walked down Canal Street and saw the architecture of the building itself. Then when I entered the door, the ambiance screamed vintage diner and the cooking was true Home-Style. The menu was so vast, I could not decide what to order. There were so many items that either are a favorite breakfast item of mine or one of my featured list here on Yelp. I was tempted by the Chicken and Waffles and The Biscuits and Gravy, but went with a simple Egg Breakfast. I choose two eggs, hash browns with bacon and wheat toast. My eggs were done right, over easy. So many diners over cook "over easy" eggs, but not here. They also made my hash browns crispy and the bacon was crisp, thick cut and wide. My wheat toast was a thick slice making for a perfect foundation for an egg with bacon sandwich. My waitress was friendly, provided service with an early morning smile and made sure my coffee cup was never empty. For me that is a good diner server. I had the tiny booth next to door which was perfect for people watching in the diner and those out on the street where Canal intersects with Roosevelt. No need for my iPad, I was totally entertained. If you google "best milkshake in Chicago", the first hit is a Time Out Chicago article boasting WPG's millkshake as the #1 vanilla one in the Windy City. Their vanilla comes with drizzles of caramel throughout. Best idea ever! We moseyed on in after the Soldier Field 10 mile race, and it didn't take me long to decide I wanted a burger. I moved to the area a few months ago and have been DYING to check out this place - it has the vibe of an old school diner which is awesome! The decor definitely matched the vibe with unique light covers, wall pictures, and the white tiles and shiny red seats. Service was pretty good, the servers were friendly and attentive, reminded me a bit of what you see of diners in TV shows. I was a bit disappointed in the food, though. Everything was cooked well and nothing was wrong with it, but there wasn't much flavor. We had the Philly cheesesteak and southern fried chicken and waffles. I love old school diners because you typically get a lot of home cooking for a good price. I also love to try anything that Guy Fieri puts his stamp of approval on. White Palace Grill filled all of these check boxes for me, but unfortunately it fell a little short. White Palace Grill is located in the heart of the South Loop. I'm impressed with the way the area built up around it and let the Grill shine. Parking surprisingly wasn't that difficult. While they don't have their own lot, there is ample street parking around so it was easy to park and walk over. For an old school diner, there is a large amount of seating. We were directed to the back and sat at a booth by the window. The menu is as large as you would expect. There are many different breakfast and lunch options. My dad was excited to find a lot of Hispanic options as well. (He LOVES chorizo.) He ended up ordering a Mexican chorizo omelet with grits, while I went for a piece of chicken fried chicken and cottage cheese. Strange combination, I know, but nothing jumped out on me as "I had to have it" so I did my best to stick to my sad keto fad. Our server was pleasant but semi-absent. She had a large family next to us she had to cater to so I understood. Our food came out shortly after we ordered. It was good. I don't really know what to say, honestly. The chicken fried chicken was hot, and the gravy didn't need too much salt and pepper buuuut it still needed it. My dad had a large amount of grits that needed some love from salt and butter. The chorizo omelet had a fair amount of flavor in it, but I would be concerned if chorizo didn't carry the meal. It was all just...okay. I'm not typically at a loss for words but I don't have any positives or negatives. I think the main kicker, and why I would give three instead of four stars, is that the price did not reflect the quality of meal. My dad and I spent $35 before tip on our meal. Since it was a-okay in my book, I don't think our meal was worth that amount. It's not even a high dollar sign by any means. However, certain price points come with certain expectations, and the ambiance and food quality of White Palace is more of Denny's type of price tag for me. If I were in the area, I may come again. But it's definitely not worth going out of your way for like I did. read more

A Chicago classic and one of the few all night diners in the city. This place is the best for after hours hunger and early morning breakfast. I have been coming here for years with my friends and we always get the best waiters. They joke with you, give recommendations, and compliment you like an old family friend. I liked how it's such a retro diner as soon as you walk in. It makes you feel like you're in old time Chicago. Someone greeted us right away. Welcoming service. You can order breakfast all day long. I got the Philly cheesesteak for $11.29 for the deluxe. The deluxe comes with soup and your choice of fruit or fries. I got the fruit which included pineapple, honeydew, and grapes. It was good. The pineapple was on the sour side. The cheesesteak had cheese, pickles on the side, mushrooms, onions, and green peppers. The steak is cut into cubes so it falls apart easily especially since there wasn't a lot of melted cheese. It says on the menu that it's smothered in melted cheese--it's not. The cheese had no flavor. I thought it was okay. The steak was cooked well. It didn't really have much flavor. It is a good portion for one person. I also tried the chicken and waffle li'l jay for $12.79. It comes with three southern fried chicken tenders, waffles, and eggs with cheese. I thought it was okay. None of it had remarkable flavor. This is the best 24 hour Diner I have EVER been to. Came here after a few drinks at a local club. The place was packed for 3 am. Lots of animated people and the staff was wonderful. This place is as Chicago as Chicago gets. There is wonderful artwork and memorabilia on the walls that really give a feeling of Chicago. There is a letter from Mayor Daley and photos of famous people that have eaten at the White Palace Grill. I have been wanting to come here for quite sometime. A couple of Sundays ago, I came into Union Station. I decided to walk to the restaurant. It was about 5 blocks from Union Station. There was no line. You just come right in and they tell you to sit anywhere. There are very few places that you can sit at the counter, and they had about 12 counter seats which were not occupied. It was just me, so I decided to take a seat at the counter across from the kitchen. It was off-peak and about 3:30 pm in the afternoon on a Sunday. After I sat down, I was immediately greeted by a server named Patrick, who was rolling silverware and commented that my sweater could almost pass for an ugly sweater contest. He was a friendly and chatty chap. Seemed like everyone was. The staff working there that day, generally seemed to be happy and get along - goes a long way for ensuring for a great customer experience. Patrick told me some tall yarns about receiving some honorary degrees from some universities, being a MENSA member, winning a bunch of technical awards, awaiting a case to be won. At first I thought that I was being pranked or that this was some sort of custom at the White Palace Grill, to spin a bunch of far fetched tales. However, Patrick did show me his MENSA card; so that part of the conversation was validated. I will have to wait and see for the other claims. I enjoyed the chit chat as my food was being prepared. Made the time fly. And speaking of time, my order was up within less than 10 minutes. It was seriously that quick. I ordered the Santa Fe Tex Mex skillet with eggs over easy atop a bed of potatoes, diced vegetables and chorizo, with a side of pancakes, which I upgraded to chocolate chip, for about $2.50 extra. The skillet was good, and a decent portion, but it was not great. What could have made it truly great, was if the chorizo wasn't burned. I was enjoying the top most part of the skillet, but as I really dug deep into it, it seemed that either the grill was not thoroughly cleaned or the chorizo was burnt, as there was this crispy texture to the chorizo and a smoky flavor to it. Regardless, I ate the whole thing - it was still pretty good. The pancakes were fluffy and good and were a decent size. They were definitely more like short stack pancakes as opposed to the large hub cap platter size. There were some chocolate chips inside them and some on top of them, but I requested more and my server, who was Kayla, was awesome. Without so much as a blink of an eye, she says, "you got it" and immediately speaks to the cooks in the kitchen through the divider and within less than 30 seconds, I receive a little cup of chocolate chips. Kayla was awesome. Courteous. Efficient. Customer Focused. Both she and Patrick asked periodically if I needed anything, such a refill on my water or anything else. Overall a good experience. I will go back. I may try something else on the menu, as they have a wide variety of dining options. Haven't tried their shakes or desserts yet, and may give that a go next time. Also, very diverse crowd of patrons. I loved it. From the staff to the patrons, the heterogeneity that is Chicago was truly represented at the White Palace Grill and there was this cool vibe that no matter who you are, whether it is an IVY league grad or a shop worker coming off shift, the bond of being a Chicagoan transcends it all and connects us. read more

Walked in here for lunch on a Tuesday. Was greeted by two of the associates as soon as I walked in the door and asked to sit wherever I liked. As soon as I sat down, the server brought water and asked if I wanted anything else at the moment. Saturday morning at 4:20 11/16 I was out with a friend from out of town wanting to show him a great breakfast joint In town. Instead of the usually welcoming greeting. My friend was harassed by the security "officer" to take his hoodie off. Respectfully he removed his hood. As we sat down he continued to speak about my friend and his hoodie. Even calling over another security to inform him of my friend. Calling my friend goofy and cloin a loud tone as to let us know he was talking about us I was unaware of any dress code enforcement. My partner went in and ordered the ham and cheese omelette, corned beef hash & two eggs, and a side of corned beef hash. He was charged $39 and given NO receipt. Once he got home we realized that the side of corned beef hash was not here or a receipt. So I called White Palace and was told they DO NOT GIVE RECEIPTS only ticket numbers. I was then told we were charged $29 not $39. The cash register person 100% charged $39. I was told they never charged for the extra side of corned beef hash so I said how was it $29 then? Then she does the math on the phone and says you're right it should have been around $26 and that we can come all the way back for our money. At this point I'm be dry upset. Despite the place looking kind of like a dump from the outside, the food inside is pretty tasty if you know what to order. The mushroom burger is fantastic, and the grilled cheese, chicken strips, and BLT are good go to lunches as well. Avoid the fish by all means, and if you get crummy fries that seem like they were microwaved, don't hesitate to send them back immediately. If they don't get something right the first time, they're usually totally cool about trying again as long as you tell them quickly. It's great that it's open 24 hours a day but the area around it isn't super great, so be cautious when leaving if you head there late at night. You won't see any problems in the place, though, at least I've never seen any. Also - the pictures show big Coca Cola signs on the outside but they recently switched to Pepsi, which is a bit of a shame since the food tasted really great with a Coke. read more

Not classic, but cool urban ambiance. Sometimes I just go there and order a coffee or two and start sketching or gossiping. Really cool ambiance. Service: pretty awesome and consistent. Been there there for a couple of times and have mixed experiences about service. But never a bad experience. They are really happy to help you and always smiling. Take your time to order food. Sometimes we stayed there for hours even after we finished our food, just sketching. They never kicked us out, sometimes they just came and appreciated what we were doing. Food: no complain about it. It never disappointed me. The price is a bit high, but when you see the quantity, you won't complain again. I never could finish my whole meal. Try meat loaf, its awesome. You will get all kinds of American food choice here, that's one plus point. I certainly recommend everyone around UIC to try this one out.
