Years ago, long before Mrs. Picante del Monte and I tied the knot, we took the long drive north to…read moreJedediah Smith Redwoods outside of Crescent City, CA to camp and hike and cook over fire and do boyfriend & girlfriend kinda stuff. An outdoorsy gal to match my own granola-ish tendencies, she chatted up a couple of locals at the gas station about nice beaches in the area. An old gnarly hippie, who most likely spoke Boontling as his native tongue, told us about Enderts Beach on the south side of town, and off we went to seek our own insular Tahiti in the cool, perpetual overcast of extreme NorCal. We pulled off Hwy 101 and started down the long stretch of two lane highway, flanked by blackberry briars and wildflowers, to a nondescript turnout and a deer path heading out toward the dunes. Soon, we were walking through long-standing spider webs, as garter snakes skirted across our path, appearing and disappearing just as quickly in the thick green blanket of grass and blackberry vines. Along the way, we picked handfuls of the wild berries and popped them in our mouths, savoring the sweetness of the fruit, and the equally satisfying beauty and solitude of this place. Just a few yards from the trail, a black bear busied herself with her own berry gorging, seemingly oblivious to our passing. Truly, this was one of the most wild and untouched places we had ever been, and so close to the highway. The beach itself is wide and clean, heavily influenced by the tide and the relentless surf that pounds this part of the California coast into submission. Sand crabs, sand dollars, shorebirds, and--at high tide with the right bait-- red tailed surf perch are plentiful. An osprey hunting fish outside the surfline was a welcome sight, as was the occasional bear that would lumber along where the blackberries met the sand. Lots of driftwood, agates on the rock piles, and sea glass polished by the surf made beach combing productive. SoCal beaches can't even begin to compare to this level of natural beauty, even off the beaten path spots like Padaro, Blacks, and El Capitan. If you ever have the chance to enjoy a beach like Enderts or many other spots from Southern Oregon down along the Lost Coast of California, please take a moment to see nature as the Great Programmer intended it. It truly is a Thin Place-- a location where the distance between heaven and earth are significantly closer than average.

A quick glance at beaches not too far over the border showed Lone Ranch Beach as a quieter local favorite. Well signed turn off took us here right off the 101. There were only a few other cars. What a gorgeous, dramatic beach! Tons of driftwood, sea stacks and forest that comes right up to the water. Walking along here was a lovely, peaceful way to spend an afternoon on the coast. There were several picnic tables on the grassy area before the beach and it seems like a great place to spend the day if you're local. Very glad I found my way up here!

One of many beaches in Brookings OR…read more The beach is part of the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor in Brookings OR, a little further drive down after crossing the CA/OR stateline. We turned in the parking lot but it was full, luckily, we found a spot (well, we kinda made our own spot) LoL! We attempted to walk down to the beach following a trail to the left but it was somewhat unpredictable and a little dangerous so we turned around. The path to the right has a better access to the beach but we didn't go. Instead we just took in the coastal views from atop and watched the crashing ocean waves hit the offshore rocks. The beach features many scenic sea stacks too. There is a picnic area at the site. February weather was exceptionally sunny, no rain in sight, but it was windy. Despite this, the location is perfect for a quick stop at the ocean or mouth of the Smith River. It's about 10 steps down to the beach and offers great views of ocean & river. Huge flocks of pelicans and gulls rest on the beach along with loads of seals and sea lions. A great place for wildlife viewing!

This is one of my favourite "hidden" beaches along the Oregon coast. Closer to California than to…read morePortland, Whaleshead is part of the Samuel Boardman Scenic Corridor and it's not terribly well-marked so you have to keep a lookout for the turn-offs off of Highway 101 to get here. This is not a swimming beach, like the other beaches along Oregon and Northern California, the water is way too cold and turbulent and there are probably sharks in the area (since they like cold water). This is more of a walking and exploring kind of beach. Both times I came, I basically had the entire beach to myself except for some seagulls and the odd turkey-vulture that showed up on my path. You can walk, and walk and walk and not see another soul. Along with the setting sun against the sea haystacks, the photo ops and atmosphere here cannot be beat. With forested pines running along a cliff behind you, few beaches are as wild as this one, without a development in sight anywhere. Let's hope it stays that way because the natural beauty here is truly pristine and overwhelming.

This beach is conveniently located along highway 101 and you can easily pull over and park with no hassle. It's not too far from the pier, but surprisingly, it wasn't overly crowded. The sand is soft on your feet and it appeared to be very clean. It's definitely a locals' beach. I spotted lots of dogs and children running around. The tides are pretty low here and people were swimming and surfing. What I really liked about this beach was that the wind wasn't too strong. I came here in the early evening during the late summer and the weather was perfect. I tend to get cold easily, especially since Bay Area beaches are always freezing cold during all seasons of the year. But, South Beach was great! The weather on the North Coast is so different from where I live. It's not the prettiest beach that I've ever seen, but it's still a convenient place to stop along the Redwood Highway.

We happened across this dog friendly gem by accident and it was a great find. First there's a…read morebeautiful, dog friendly beach. It's certainly off the beaten path and during our time here only saw three other people and only one other dog. And they were pretty far away. The beach is a little unusual if you're not from the area and is made of this very small (most pieces were 1/16th to 1/4 inch) smooth rocks. It was really nice to walk on. Right along the waterline are very jagged rocks that look pretty hard to walk on, so it's probably not the best beach to plan on going for a swim. Besides the water is cold. There's plenty of driftwood and larger rocks to check out. The path from the park is a little steep and it could be a little slick when it gets wet. The walk up and down the hill is worth it. If you don't feel like taking your dog down to the beach there's also a large fenced in dog park on the other side of the parking lot. It's pretty bad, but we didn't see this at first because we thought the beach was so cool. We saw more people and dogs in the enclosed dog area than we did on the beach. If we're in the area again we'd definitely go back.

My first thought was that it is more remote than I had for some reason assumed. I really appreciated the relatively large spans of almost no civilization and all nature. Second thought, the entire Oregon coast is stunning...the most beautiful coast line in the country in my humble opinion. Rugged, treed, full of wildlife, serene. Third note, the corridor did have the most rock formations as compared to other parts of our coast, very fun to admire, especially from the higher vantage points of the many, many viewpoints along the route. Overall, a stunning area...but let's be real...it's just another jaw-droppingly beautiful piece of a state overflowing with spectacular sights.

During the colder months the accessibility to the…read morebeach is difficult, but not impossible, as they take away the stairs and put them back in the warm months. If you are looking for driftwood, there is no lack of it here as it piles up toward the cement walkway, while the beach is clear. Lots of cars lined up with people eating their lunch or just having coffee and watching the waves. It is a great beach to see whales without needing binoculars at certain times of the year. The January and February migration was fantastic this year and there were a few that lingered around still. If you like dogs and dog people, you will meet a lot of them walking along the boardwalk. Come in September and there is art on display for the month along the wooden boardwalk and you can vote for your favorite. Nice!
