Stopped by for a pre Cinco de Mayo lunch. Day was a bit cloudy and found parking right in front. I got the beef birro taco and the hubby got the chicken taco. Also ordered a side of guacamole. The star of the show however was the blackberry sangria.. Atmosphere was really cozy and loved all the beautiful paintings on the wall. Food came out really fast. They had a table with all the fixings. We had a good time. On our way out, picked another bottle of wine. Always so many choices. So excited for the coming season of events. Will definitely be back. White Silo Farm & Winery is a rustic farm, vineyard & winery that opened in Sherman, Connecticut in 2000. It was opened by the Gorman family, including Ralph and his son Eric. Ralph has a degree in engineering and had previously worked as an engineer, a chemistry teacher, a physics professor and a consultant. He grew bored, wanted to try something different, so in 1985 he decided to purchase a 17-acre parcel of farmland in Sherman that had previously been part of Upland Pastures dairy farm. The Gorman family intended to continue the farming tradition and preserve the land for generations to come. They planted crops of raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb. The circa 1780 dairy barn and silo were completely renovated and converted into a tasting room and production area. By 2000, the winery opened to the public. The initial wines made available were fruit (non-grape) wines, crafted from their own farm-grown fruit. The Gorman family planted their first grape vineyard in 2010 and additional grapevines were planted in 2016. My wife and I visited White Silo this past weekend. To celebrate my wife's birthday, I took her for a drive in Western Connecticut to see the fall foliage and explore some wineries. This was our first visit to White Silo and it was our first stop of the day. The property was lovely and the interior of the barn was very charming. We decided to order some wine flights so we could sample several of the winery's offerings. Between the two of us, we sampled their "Upland Pastures White", "Rhubarb", "Sparkling Red Raspberry", "Upland Pastures Red", "Farm White", "Upland Pastures Rosé", "Blackberry Sangria", and their "Apple Cider". We decided to purchase bottles of our two favorites (the "Sparkling Red Raspberry" and the "Apple Cider") to take home. White Silo also offers light food options as well. We shared the winery's "Hummus Plate" and "Gourmet Boxed Lunch" while we enjoyed our flights. The boxed lunch, which changes seasonally, included a turkey sandwich made with arugula and White Silo mustard, quinoa salad, a mini cheese plate, mixed nuts, and a chocolate turtle bar. It was the perfect amount of food to enjoy with our wine samples. Overall we had a very relaxing experience at White Silo, complete with a live musician. We highly recommend White Silo to visitors traveling through this quiet part of the state. We hope to be back! read more

Eric (an owner) and Leighann were so easy to work with; they communicated clearly and regularly and the party was a HUGE success! From the venue itself (gorgeous) to the staff (attentive but not intrusive) to the recommended musician (Guy Tino - fabulous!) to the wine (HIGHLY recommend either the Rhubarb or the Upland Pastures White) to the food (truly outstanding) this event will go down in my memories as one of my all time favorites!! Stopped in when in the area as I knew of their Sangria (mix of two wines) from a wine festival several years ago. Soooo good. Staff was very friendly and the wine tasting was a good representation of their better selections. I am not a fruit wine lover so stayed with the grape varieties mostly. Although the rhubarb ones are intriguing. If you are open to some different tastes they can help select ones to fit. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but anyone that rated this locally owned winery less than five stars is mistaken. This spot is the perfect way to spend a Saturday. They have seating spaced well throughout the winery, a walking trail, the most welcoming crew, and some of the best pizza I have ever had. The wines were fantastic, we did a tasting and enjoyed the variety of classic reds, whites, and their fruit wine options, including blackberry, raspberry and rhubarb. They even had a port like wine that I loved! They have live music Saturdays and make homemade pizza with completely homemade and grown ingredients from the farm from 2-5pm. read more

I went to White Silo Winery for the first time recently and loved it! It's a fairly small winery- but that don't let the fool you... their wines have big flavor! I tried a bottle of the Cayuga White, which is semi-sweet. It was so delicious and refreshing! I also ordered a cheese board that had a variety of cheeses, meats, and nuts, which were all amazing (the crackers were also excellent). Probably my favorite part of this place though is the location. It's located on a fairly quiet road and they have indoor seating as well as outdoor. The outdoor seating is up on a small hill which gives you a nice view of the property. White Silo is also part of the CT Farm Wineries Passport- they have free copies of passports inside, which the employee at the counter will stamp for you. Visit at least 12 of the listed farm wineries located throughout CT within the year and you can submit you passport to be entered into a drawing for prizes. There's also an app you can download on your phone with a digital passport that you can use to check in when you're at the various participating locations. Also the staff here were very friendly and let me try a few different wines before choosing which bottle I wanted to buy. I would definitely recommend checking it out this summer! read more

In the middle of a pandemic, we search for safe getaways outdoors. After a hot summer hike at one of the state parks, we did a quick Google search for wineries close by. I called White Silo to check on whether they were open. Someone super pleasant answered the phone and told me their hours. They are not doing wine tastings due to COVID-19, but they are selling bottles. We decided to take a gamble and check it out. We arrived and saw a beautiful tiered seating area. What an incredibly peaceful place. The staff is very friendly and indicate that our safety and health is of utmost importance. They disinfect chairs and tables after anyone has sat at them. They provide single-use plastic cups (more sanitary). Their menu consists of fruit wines only. We found a table in the shade to enjoy our blackberry sangria (a mix of blackberry and rhubarb). There is a placard on each table asking us to keep our masks on if we leave the table. I was happy to see that they are taking the situation seriously. We lingered for a while, our eyes resting on the horizon of the Hudson Valley. A willow tree keeps watch at the edge of the vineyard. I believe this was the most relaxing, welcoming outdoor moment I've had in a long while. I hope to come back when they start offering tastings again. Today was the maple syrup brunch and demonstration - what a treat! The talk about making maple syrup was informative. The brunch was absolutely delicious, and we got a choice of a glass of wine - also very good. There were 3 of us enjoying this event, and each glass was better than the next. The staff is great and we were delighted with our Sunday treat. We've been here before, but never for an event. We look forward to our next visit. What a great time we had at this wine tasting & tour. Our day started with a box lunch which was actually quite tasty. They served us a turkey sandwich on Seven Grain with their amazing White Silo Mustard (so good), served with a Quinoa Salad (amazing flavor), mini cheese plate, mixed nuts and a Chocolate Turtle Bar. At first I thought the box lunch was not going to be good but it was GREAT! next we went on a tour of the winery and although it was a bit cold it was not bad. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the winery and it's history's had plenty great stories to keep the tour fun and lively. We finally got a tour of their new wine making facility where we were able to sample a wine they were in the procedure making. Last but not least was the wine tasting which was good, as we tasted the bartender was able to explain the complexities of the wine and suggest what food and chocolate pairings would be best with the wine we were tasting. I suggest you try their cheese board with the wine, it was really good and made the wine even more enjoyable (see pic). Our tour guide explained how they hold several wine and food festivals throughout the year; we will defend back to take part in them. Overall we truly enjoyed the winery and will be back but definitely in warmer weather. read more

What a great day - a four wine tasting, tour of the "vineyards", munching on late ripening raspberries, a healthy and tasty box lunch, and a closure of chocolates and sparkling raspberry wine. This is a gem and cannot fail to please, especially on a nice day when you can sit outdoors, looking out over the vineyard to the mountains and enjoy the food and wine. We took the long drive out to Sherman today and spent a very nice couple of hours at the beautiful White Solo Farm. We had their Picnic Lunch special with a wine tasting and a tour. The only thing that could have improved the day was less rain and more sunshine -the bad weather truncated our tour of the grounds and vineyard. On their website, White Silo is described as a "family operated boutique winery specializing in small batch fruit and grape wine". That description is right on the money. They sell one sparkling wine, an $18 Red Raspberry. They sell six dry wines - a $14 Rhubarb, a $15 Blackberry, a $15 Raspberry, a $16 Black Currant, a very nice $15 Upland Pastures White (with Cayuga Grapes), and a $15 Upland Pastures Red. They sell four Semi-sweets- the Rhubarb and Raspberry are $10, a Cassis is $14, and a Blackberry is $15. They sell a $29 Sangria "kit" which is a box containing a bottle of WHite and a bottle of blackberry. We had a package deal that included their picnic lunch and it included a turkey sandwich (kind of bready), a quinoa-kale salad (excellent), a mini cheese plate (very good), some mixed nuts, a turtle bar (awesome) and a glass of their sparkling raspberry (excellent). The tasting normally runs $7 and lets you sample any 4 of their wines plus a sangria. I ordered four of the dry wines and my wife sampled all 4 of their sweet wines. I liked pretty much everything I tried- the standouts were the Sparkling Red Raspberry, Rhubarb (their top seller), blackberry, the White grape wine, and all of the sweet wines. Our tour guide Eric was very informative and entertaining and did a great job on the history of the property, the production of the wines, and explaining the many festivals (rhubarb, asparagus, raspberry, chocolate) that White Silo hosts. This was a pleasant stop on our way back from lunch after we realized we had to make reservations to get into any apple or pumpkin farms. They had live entertainment, which was enjoyable and house wines were generally good. My favorite was the raspberry but make sure you get the sparkling and not the drier non sparkling version - the latter unfortunately tastes very similar to cough medicine while the former was very refreshing and delicious even though I normally don't like sweet wines. If you make a reservation, apparently you can get pizza which looked really good and they had oatmeal raisin cookies that I heard are amazing. We missed the last one available by a few minutes I was told! Would probably go back and with a reservation. read more

The two stars are for the view, the wine was mediocre. We opted for one tasting (I was all tasted out, and planned to get a glass of sangria), my husband picked what he wanted to taste. I didn't love any of it. We ended up with a glass of sangria for me and a glass of cassis for my husband. We headed out to the beautiful seating area with our picnic food, part 2 (this was vineyard stop 4 of 4 for the day). I have had the sangria previously at the CT wine festival. I thought I was a fan, but it was kind of blah. Not super cold, no fruit, no carbonation, could have just used a little something extra. It was fine but I was not dying for a second glass. But I could have enjoyed that view all day long! I think they should consider adding some live music outside on the weekends, might attract more customers. read more

White Silo is on par with other CT or southern NY wineries I've tried...although if you're looking for a California or even larger Virginia-style tasting experience, you're out of luck. White Silo is almost all about fruit wines, with only a few grape wines thrown in. If that's not your cup of tea (um...glass of wine?) then skip this place. But if fruit wine is your thing, then you'll likely leave a happy customer. White Silo is small but cute. Like many CT wineries, they seem to make their business off people who want to spice up their day with a picnic and a glass of vino. My tasting partner & I partnered up so we sampled most of their menu with a bit of sharing (because for wine, sharing is caring). Surprisingly, my favorite was the white Cayuga wine. This is a grape I've seldom tried before, so it came as a pleasant surprise. But since I'm not much of a fruit wine drinker, much of their menu was wasted to me. I'd recommend White Silo to fruit wine aficionados and those willing to experiment a bit...but skip it if you're only into grapes. read more

I have been to White Silo several times, but haven't been back since prior to the pandemic. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable of the wines. The atmosphere is peaceful. The wine is tasty and they offer both dryer and semi sweet varieties of the same type. So, you could get a dry blackberry wine or a semi sweet blackberry wine, depending on your preference. The hostess was willing to substitute sweeter wines for my friend who does not like the dry types. I loved their upland Pastures White! read more

What a gem in a small rural area north of Danbury, CT! Quaint, rustic old barn that has been turned into a winery. We signed up for the tour, wine tasting and lunch. Lunch consisted of a box lunch- sandwich on a multigrain roll, quinoa salad, cheese, nuts and dried fruit as well as dessert and small container of mixed chocolates. All served with a glass of sparkling raspberry wine. We ate outside on one of many tables set up around the property, all with views of the surrounding vineyard and hills. . Tour was very informative - history of the property as well as the wine making business. Tasting involved selecting four wines ( choose from sweet and dry wines) and their red sangria . Very personable! Great activity for a nice outdoor day but activities can all be held indoors. Learned they also have festivals and brunch events too so we will go back! read more

This was by far the most young, hip and social of the 4 vineyards we visited on the SW Wine Trail. While we were there, there was a Bacheleorette Party and some big Groupon deal going on. We were excited to stop here, as per their website "This year we are offering gourmet picnic lunch boxes for $20 per person" however, when we asked our tasting host he said they couldn't accomodate us and that it was only for the Groupon people? umm not per your website OR the board behind you??!!?? FAIL. The website also mentioned a cheeseplate we could order and he didn't even offer that. Out tasting host was horrible. He didnt explain anything, just poured. He kept forgetting what people wanted. He seemed stoned out of his mind or he had early onset alzheimers. The wines were all fruit based and my favorite was the rhubarb semi sweet. The Sangria was the real winner though. But it only came in a kit... Final comment: They need to get their act together, the place was total chaos. What a deal! The atmosphere inside was very cozy, the host very interested in educating us, and I loved their relaxing music. Their gourmet lunch included half a turkey sandwich, a small cheese and dried fruit tasting, a quinoa salad, a small container of mixed nuts, and the most delicious chocolate turtle bar. It tasted like chocolatey toffee! We enjoyed it outside at their patio tables and it was definitely filling. This winery features fruit wines in both the dry and sweet variety--raspberry, blackberry, currant, grape, and even rhubarb! My favorite by far was the dry raspberry. Had a very prominent raspberry flavor but wasn't too sweet, making it very drinkable. I prefer drier wines but if you want you can get the same raspberry flavor in a sweet version. Such a neat option! The wines are very afforable at $10-$18 a bottle with my favorite coming in at $15. Definitely recommend stopping by! Very disappointed. The person pouring the flats labeled them incorrectly which resulted in us ordering the wrong bottle. Instead of graciously changing the bottle out, after all we had purchased a good deal of food and tipped well, the owner insinuated that is was our mistake. He reluctantly agreed to waste the incorrect bottle if we paid an additional $4 which was the price differential. We decided not to. Not the way we expected business to be conducted. Instead of gaining a customer with a glowing review, they lost one and received one star....to update since I didn't care for the wine that my husband continued to drink, we went to have it corked. The owner had the $17 to refund us for the bottle. That added three stars. read more

White Silo, what a pleasantly pleasant surprise! I knew from reading the reviews that this winery mainly focuses on fruit wines, which are not exactly my favorite. My experiences have led me to believe that fruit wines are overly sweet, light, and usually taste like juice. I had no idea that fruit wines could actually be complex, bold, or dry, although the semi-sweet wines were equally as impressive. A few of the wines left my boyfriend and I stunned. STUNNED. I expected to like the rhubarb wine, since that's the one that gets mentioned most frequently, but I don't think I'm a big rhubarb fan. I wound up purchasing a bottle of the Dry Blackberry (WHOA), Semisweet Raspberry (WHOA) and a glass of their sangria to enjoy outside. The sangria is equal parts dry something and semisweet something, I can't remember, but that's it- no Sprite, no nothing, just straight up Awesome Potion. The only thing that could have made this visit better would have been a hostess who was a little friendlier and had more to say about the wines. Worst winery I have ever visited. Sarah K.'s review hit the nose on the head regarding the service. PROS: 1. As many have mentioned, it's a peaceful and serene place. Beautiful view. 2. The outdoor terrace and indoor winery have a nice ambiance. 3. Quirky flavored, homemade mustards (rhubarb, black current) would make a nice gift. CONS: 1. The most unfriendly service that I have ever received at any winery, ever. The young blond hostess never even smiled at us. In fact, she made it a point to speak with us as little as possible. It's very strange to do a tasting and not have your host or hostess try to educate you about the wines while you are tasting them. Aren't they trying to sell you wine? It's one thing to ignore customers when it's super busy, but to ignore them to their face when it's not is just plain rude. We asked her how large the grounds were so we could walk around and explore and she just looked at us blankly and said, "I don't know." And made no effort to find out from someone else. She didn't even say thank you when we paid. She obviously doesn't want to be there. We are guessing that she is a relative of the owner or partner (there was a strong resemblance to the bartender) and that is why she continues to work there.... It's a shame, because I really liked the ambiance despite her disinterest in us and would have brought visitors from out of town. As it stands, we never want to go back and take the chance of dealing with her crappy and miserable attitude ever again. 2. The wine. I wasn't impressed by any of them. The sangria tastes like a wine cooler. The best one, by far, was the white grape varietal, but I have had much better wines at the $10-$15/bottle price point. The red grape varietal tasted super young, light, and bitter. Which is what it is, I guess--really young wine. Some of the super sweet dessert wines are okay.
