The crew did a nice job. The low rating (which would be a zero star rating if possible) is because of the outrageous fees charged by the company AND because of the shady business tactics used. I would never have agreed to pay upwards of $2,000 for a 5 mile move. It was a small 3-bedroom house, all the packing was done prior to the movers showing up, no appliances had to be moved. White Star moved my large home into a condo and a storage unit. It was amazing how much they got into the unit. Stacked like only someone that had been doing it for years could do. I have had the same crew several times. Nice of them to check my file and know I thought the guys were excellent and send them again! They explained all of the costs upfront and there guess of how long it would take was spot on! (Even though I forgot about several things!) My movers were Troy and Neil! Moving was an emotional thing for me and my wife. Once the truck pulled up, my wife started crying and was upset. The movers made us both feel comfortable. My parents were moving from the house we grew up in to a much smaller condo. A lot of big items, small items and everything inbetween. They showed up, early, and never stopped working from that minute. They were kind, friendly, and honest. They beat the estimated time and saved my parents $200! They had to move most items into a storage unit and took the time to unpack the unit then repack it the right way for us to make it an easier move in the future. They then came out to my parents new condo and moved everything in without a dent. Everything was great from my mom's first phone call to the lady for an estimate until the moment they left. White Star and Mayflower have awful scheduling and have a tendency to not communicate the status of the move with the customer. Moved out 1/31. Now 2/19 and still do not have my belongings. The move is from Michigan to Wisconsin (I know, huge move). I am now having to wait until 3/2 to get my belongings, which doesn't seem long, but you count every day when all you have at your place is a camping chair and an air mattress. I have a really hard time believing that the industry standard is not being able to communicate a time window to you more than a day out. My moving experience was great with White Star. The guys showed up on time and were friendly, professional and knew their stuff. I was a bit frustrated because one of the guys had a bad knee so the other guy had to do most of the running up and down of steps where I moved to. There were a few nicks/scratches but Debbie at their Sterling Hts office was great to work with. She sent the furniture guy over and he fixed it right up. A few weeks later, I noticed a few shelf hooks missing and screws from my mirror dresser but Debbie sent over a couple of guys who happened to be in the area. They couldnt fix it because the screws were missing but they ran out and got some from home depot and came right back without me asking them to. Super pleased and happy with their customer service. I just ad two of the most polite and helpful movers here at my home. They took out an old mattress and put in a new one. It was king sized and I have narrow hallway. They did an excellent job. They were courteous, friendly and very professional. Would recommend this moving company in a heartbeat. They called to let me know they'd be at my home in 15 minutes and were well within the time for delivery. The truck was big and happened to take out a branch on my city owned tree by the road. No big deal to me and as I was going to remove it, they took care of it. Very surprised at this. This is another reason why I'd recommend this company. By the middle of the move I was in tears from White Star Movers horrible poor customer service tactics. Chris misquoted the weight of our house items by double the amount and left out our 3 bedrooms. Henry lacks people communication customer service skills and needs to learn how to talk to a customer. He was argumentative and cold from the get go, 20 years of this maybe you need to retire if you do not know these basic skills by now. Debbie did not want to help at all and kept insisting that my husband told Chris to leave out our bedrooms because he didn't want him in there because the kids were sick. He told them he would break down all the beds not leave them off the bid. I had 4 bids and all the other bids were in line with this bid by $100 or so with our weight and bedrooms and 2 truck runs. Our boxes were clearly marked and many boxes were put in wrong rooms. we ended up having to pay for them to come back out for the items missed on the first run another day but it was like pulling teeth. They did not take responsibility for any of their mistakes made even after calling their in tears. I had an appointment with Whitestar/Mayflower today. He never showed up and never called to reschedule. This is after a month in advance booking and a reschedule for or original appointment two days ago (I got a reschedule phone call an hour and half before the appointment time) because the guy who was supposed to come, apparently went out of town all of a sudden. To put icing on the cake, I called their office and no one will answer the phones and no voicemail is available. I understand this may be due to a large storm we had last night but our power company is not reporting outages in their area right now, I checked). None of this excuses the fact that NO ONE contacted me to let me know he was not coming (Good business practice is to have contact info for your next day's appointments in case of a setback or possible early arrival). I am not even going to mention the confusing emails I continue to get from their company telling me that I do not have an appointment and that I need to reschedule (according to an office employee, it is ANOTHER clerical error caused by the fact I contacted corporate first??? Really?) These types of clerical issues are issues I DO NOT need on my move day, and their office has shown me that they are not capable enough to handle a smooth move day, since they cannot even get the estimate appointments squared away correctly. I understand there was a huge storm last night, I was in it too. But everyone in this area is doing business as usual, and that is after not having power most of the night and some of this morning. Yet I was still able to find their phone number, know I had an appointment and made sure I was available during that appointment time. If you were my friend and I was giving you advise on whether or not to use Whitestar/Mayflower in Detroit Metro, I would say, STAY AWAY from them and go talk to Untied or Allied...THEY SHOWED UP and were SUPER professional! read more

Thanks to the 2 young men that did all the heavy lifting, Brett and Brad. You could tell they were experienced the way they moved some furniture pieces others have found difficult in the past. This is the worst company I have ever worked with. I would never recommend them. They were hired to deliver my furniture order and sent it on a truck with 2 delivery persons who were unable to handle the weight of the items. The weight of the items is listed on the manifest. My items were damaged, my wall was damaged, and a job that should have taken an hour took 4 hours. During the 4 hours the delivery persons were hanging around my office, they didn't even finish getting the handles attached to the furniture, my office staff did. They talked on their phone, complained about their company and cursed. (Actually one person was very considerate, just not informed how to do his job and not strong enough to do his job, following a leader who was very disrespectful). Kaitlyn who represented herself as an owner, I don't know if she is, refused to assist with sending a backup crew to help them and suggested that the desk that was laying in my hall because they couldn't get it any further, and it only got that far due to my staff assistance, be put back on the truck to be delivered another time. If they barely got it in, how do they get it out? Now it's not protected with a box and we were the first delivery of the day. They still had half a truck of items to deliver. Eventually 2 people were sent over and it took 10 minutes, as I said it would, to get the 2 desks in that were the real issue. 4 hours of arguing for 10 minutes of assistance that could have been avoided if someone had read a manifest properly. All this and arguing with me, and avoiding the company who sold me the furniture, which I assume they just got the contract with since this is my 3rd order this year and my first delivery from Whitestar. Worst Customer Service. Worst delivery service. Worst Service all around. Never use. read more

Guy came out to the house and gave us a quote. Then my wife and I talked it over, since it was $2000. We decided to go with White Star, so we made the reservation to have them move us. The big moving day came and they NEVER SHOWED UP!!!!! They "had no record" of our reservation. We had less than 48 hours to be out of our house and they were NOT able to do anything to make up for their HUGE mistake. I just retired from the Army a few weeks ago and White Star Movers were delivering my final household goods shipment. I am very pleased with their service. Someone called me the day prior and said they would be at my home between 11:00am and 3:00pm. They arrived well within that time at 1:15. My movers were Luke and Mario and they were very professional and careful with my things. I directed them where I wanted boxes placed and they complied with no problems. They also asked if I wanted them to open the boxes. I told them to open some of the boxes just so that they could take the packaging and stuffing back with them. I'm a satisfied customer. I would use them again but I'm a civilian now! It's time to settle down so hopefully I won't be moving again any time soon. Hooah. read more

We moved 150 miles across Michigan to Battle Creek and the White Star Movers did an outstanding job!! Eric came out to give us an estimate and we felt so comfortable with him that we hired him on the spot!!! Nash, Nathan and Luke took control and emptied the house in no time. DO NOT USE THIS MOVING COMPANY! They guaranteed a move date and then three days before the packing date, they said they could not move us on the date agreed. We were moving out of state and already bought our plane tickets. They then said they would move us as close to the date promised as possible. They packed and loaded a 7,000 sq foot house in ONE DAY and in sub zero weather. Needless to say, our furniture was a mess. I contacted an attorney but unfortunately, it would cost more in legal fees than what I would get back from the company. My only recourse is to warn other patrons to stay away from this company. I was fooled to think that Mayflower was a reliable company however, they outsource their moving business to thugs like White Star Movers. All I can say is stay away from this moving company. WORST COMPANY!! SUPERIOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!?!?! .... I called to ask for a moving quote. After telling the man who answered the size I the dwelling and where I am moving from and to I get put in hold (that's ok, no problem yet). When he picks back up the guy asks me to describe everything in each room, room by room, that I was planning on moving. I then requested that they do an in home estimate (free per their website) instead of explaining everything over the phone and the man just said "yeah, I don't think so" and hung up the phone. WILL NOT PAY FOR PROPERTY DAMAGE CAUSED BY THEIR MOVERS!!!!!! United quickly paid for the damage to the items damaged by Whitestar, but damage to property/the house is left to a third party chosen by Whitestar...Estes Relocation in Estes, TX owned by Penny Estes. Estes Relocation was quick to pay for the $175 wall damage from the crib, but the floor damage would require their 1/2 of the $1700 top coat estimate ($850) and move out of the first floor furniture (free to their moving company or 1/2 of the $3000 estimate if a local Iowa company handled the move), plus 1/2 of the local $39.99 hotel costs per night ($20) for the 5 days for the new top coat to be laid and 5 days curing time. So for $950 - $2450 depending on if they did the move for them to fix my newly refinished hardwood floor they damaged. Their share is only 1/2 because the flooring company made a mistake in my flooring in a separate room from the 2 rooms where the top coat was damaged by the movers and the moveout, top coat, and hotel would need to occur anyway. I did everything I could to get the moving estimate as low as possible for my 1700 sq ft first floors of 1 continuous hardfloor with no breaks...putting the smaller items on different floors in my home, putting my Pottery Barn furniture in a POD in my driveway instead of storage, just moving the large furniture items, etc. When I spoke to Whitestar, they said "Penny [Estes] handles all of our claims. I said that I spoke with her after she offered me a $250 "good faith" settlement for the floor damage which is a joke and she received the estimates for the cost to fix my floor. She told me to call you and provided me with your number, now you guys are saying to call her. Someone needs to fix my floor." This has been going on 1.5 years. I notified both Estes Relocation and Whitestar companies that if they did not fix my floor, that I would contact the gov't travel office to terminate their contract with the government, leave a negative online review, and sue for damages. They responded in a letter I received today (13 June 2017) with a reminder of the $250 "good faith" offer and it would be their final offer. This company might be OK for junky furniture and local moves if your don't care about damage and just want it moved. IF YOU HAVE VALUABLE FURNITURE OR OTHER BELONGINGS, OR A HIGH VALUE HOME.... DO NOT HIRE THIS COMPANY!!! Their packers and movers are sweet young kids that will not wrap things properly and have no regard for your home. "Throw it in the box, scoot it in the home across the floor causing damage, don't wrap furniture causing deep gouges to where the furniture will not be the same even after repair, shove it in the room, gouge the wall" seems to be their moving motto. Sloppy and unprofessional. Their claims are worse than the moving itself. How horrible to treat a military family this way even after they charged the tax payer top dollar for this move for top quality service and that did not happen. Please go with a nationally known company if you value your belongings or your home. Description of work: Military PCS move of 12,000 lbs from Michigan to Iowa. I had broken glass from items not being wrapped properly, broken heirlooms, autographed items thrown in with exercise weights in the same box with no wrap, military heirlooms destroyed, heirloom furniture gouged from not being wrapped, and the movers did damage to my newly painted walls from gouging the wall while moving an heirloom $1K+ crib and newly refinished historical home hardwood floor by scooting a heavy dishpack across my floor causing tape damage to my fresh floor top coat. 3 flooring companies stated that the top was damaged and the first floor would need to be top coated; it could not be buffed out. I obtained 3 estimates and provided the cheapest estimate in my claim. read more

If they sense that your company will pay for your move, they will give you a low quote (less number of containers) initially and when you have no other option with half of the items loaded in the truck they quote a higher amount and you are done. My experience with Mayflower/White star moving company was terrible at best. We moved from a two bedroom apartment in MI to NH. Eric was very effective in canvasing their services and told me that my stuff will fit in two containers but there was a very small chance we might need a third container. He also added that if we get rid of some stuff we will easily fit in two containers. So we discarded some of our stuff and opted for two containers. He never told me about the difference in rates if we decide to add a third container later. My initial quote was 3600 dollars. I was so impressed that I had recommended them to 1 of my friends who works in my company. In the middle of loading, they said all my stuff will not fit in two containers and I will need to get a third container. I tried calling Eric and the office multiple times and had to wait two hours infront of the truck not knowing what to do. When Eric called me two hours later, he said to get a third container I will need to add 2500 dollars more and quoted a Michigan law. I realized later that if we had ordered a third container before they start loading, then I would have had to pay 900 dollars extra only instead of 2500. One of the workers who loaded my stuff said that the estimate was odd because the weight of the stuff in the order form would have never fit in two containers. They knew my company will pay for my move. I saw a foul play here and refused to take this bait . They took whatever they could fit and left back 10 boxes and some furniture, totes , a cycle and few suitcases. I had to rent a UBox from Uhaul and send the remaining stuff in it. I called my friend right away who was also planning to use them and realized they had started the same process with her. They had promised she will need only two containers and sometimes a third one. I warned her about this scam and she discarded/sold a lot of furniture and finally was able to just fit in two containers. She thanked me for warning her. The date of delivery was July 12. I was told they will come between 1-5pm. They never showed up and nobody called. I tried calling but couldn't get hold of anybody till next day morning when they said the delivery team tried to come to my apt and tried to call me on my phone. I am sure that they never did both. I never got a missed call ( I use google voice and so I get an immediate text and email real time for every voicemail or even attempted call). They didn't give me any evidence that they tried to deliver. After repeated attempts they finally delivered my stuff 9 days later. You can imagine how we stayed in an empty apartment for that period with a toddler and an infant. read more

I got something to be delivered using their services and I called to check the status, 1st time, they asked me to call the next day, so I did call the next day and they said they will call me in an hour to schedule. The day passed and I called the day after (3rd time now) and they said I have to call the place I purchased it from (which is weird since their job is only to deliver), anyways I did call and the place I purchased it from, said that this shouldn't be the case but still to help me, they called White Stat Movers and asked them to deliver my item, they asked to contact me to schedule the delivery today before noon. It is 2pm and no one called, I just called them and they told me it is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. I have a business and I've been shipping and receiving for over 10 years and this is the first time I see someone so unprofessional. I wouldn't recommend using them at all. read more

Neither of us had ever hired professional movers before, so we were not sure what type of service to expect from a moving company. Made an appointment a week in advance. Took the day off. 15 minutes before the guy is supposed to be here he calls and says he can't come out today but he has a few other days available. I get paid by the hour and since I took the day off I am already out 232 for the day. What makes him think that I would be willing to lose another 200 for him to cancel again? I called and wanted to talk to management and the lady wouldn't let me talk to anyone. It is November in Michigan. It is not top moving season. Do not hire these movers if you value your belongings. While they were efficient and got the job done, one of our dressers had two knobs broken off, two pieces of furniture were scratched, one bed frame was reassembled incorrectly so that the bed frame is now cracked and broken, and several boxes marked "fragile" had heavy things loaded on top of them and arrived partially crushed.
