I had a truly poor experience with Dr. Michelle Volchonok at AV Periodontics (now Tetra Health) in…read moreGreenwich CT and NYC and I deeply regret spending $25,000 on my cosmetic dental work with her. I am 25 years old and I initially sought a full set of 10 upper porcelain veneers with 4 upper porcelain crowns to correct and replace 2 fake teeth (bridges) that I had put in place at 18 due to genetically missing those teeth at birth. In addition to the crowns I chose to have the veneers placed so that the teeth color of all teeth were consistent and to correct some gum asymmetry. I did not know, nor was I told, that she had very little experience in this type of work as she had only graduated from dental school 2 years before and had no fellowship. She joined her brother's practice, Dr Alex Volchonok (AV Periodontics) and it was Dr Alex that I had originally gone to see because they advertised cosmetic dental work near my parents home in Greenwich CT but also had an office in Manhattan near my work. Upon my appointment with him, he referred me to his sister who told me she had done lots of this type of work. I wish I had done more due diligence as it was only after my bad experience with her that I found out how little experience she had. Issues I had with her and her work were many and I won't go into details here but my end result is so unattractive that I sought out 2 separate second opinions with highly experienced cosmetic dentists in NYC at my expense hoping to have someone validate me in what I had been telling Dr Volchonok throughout the entire process of the 3 sets of temporaries and now the final product, which is that I was not happy with the size, shape and color of my teeth. In fact, both dentists told me that my final smile looked like a "before" picture. One told me they were old looking - not "youthful". In fact, both dentists told me to ask for my money back if I had no confidence she could fix them because the cost to repair and redo the work would probably cost me more than I originally paid Dr Volchonok not to mention the time, anguish and pain I will have to continue to experience in correcting her work as I would not trust her to touch my teeth again. I did ask for my money back and they offered a small reimbursement of 8,000 or to have the work corrected by another dentist in their practice to fix Dr Michelle Volchonok's work. Unfortunately I had no confidence in the dentist they offered as I had previous experience with Dr Linkous when one of my temporaries fell out and he affixed them crookedly and I had to come back a few days later to have that corrected! For this comparatively small reimbursement or to chance having the work corrected by Dr Linkous, I was told I would have to sign a NDA where I would not be able to write a review or hold them at fault legally. What is most infuriating is that Dr Volchonok dismissed all my concerns throughout the process. Each time I expressed discomfort or dissatisfaction with each set of temporaries, she brushed me off saying "the finals will be perfect". Now Dr Michelle Volchonok and AV Periodontics (now Tetra Health) is shifting its marketing approach to a "biological dental practice" claiming to focus on "holistic well-being." Given my experience, I question how seriously they take their patient's concerns or their overall well-being when I have left their office multiple times in tears over pain, discomfort, frustration and overall displeasure of the appearance of my teeth. I would not recommend Dr Michelle Volchonok or Av Periodontics (now Tetra Health) to anyone. The skill/experience/talent needed, expected and assured to me by her during my consultations for my type of cosmetic work was not met. The bottom line is that Dr Michelle Volchonok at AV Periodontics and Tetra Health has left me with an unattractive smile that cost me time, money, pain and anguish that I will now have to have fixed elsewhere. If you care about your smile, please look elsewhere.

The book gave protocols on how to prepare nutritionally for the required X-rays, as well as important facts on health and nutrition and how to live a long and healthy life, and how our oral health opens that gateway. Unfortunately, overtime the service diminished and my experience has not only pushed me not to trust dentist but has caused racially traumatized me. Also, as a women who is black and autistic it made me very anxious. For my first few appointments, which changed on the spot very quickly, became more expensive and were focused on a teeth clean. And fixing a tooth's that was broken. The dental assistant was rude due to me being only 5 minutes late because I got lost and I called "Dana", the office manager, and she said it's ok still try to make it. The assistant fussed while in the back the whole time. Then my next visits were Dr. Zeines seeing cavities and wanting to remove the mercury fillings. Now I was ok with the mercury fillings but the cavities were only suppose to be two but turned into five. These sessions were out of pocket for the cost. The left side appointments were a spur of the moment decision. My actual appointment was suppose to be for a cracked tooth on my right side. I wanted to use my insurance to save on money and this cause the harsh treatment towards me. My insurance would only give so much (which is pretty normal for dental insurance) and when the office saw this they made up excuse to why they couldn't use my insurance. I was told that I didn't have good health insurance and that the work was already stated. The insurance company stated that their images were not well done and they could not see the request the office was asking for. I was yelled at over the phone threatened by Dr. Zeines and "Dana" (which I'm sure is just his wife) that I had to come in due to Dr. Zeines preparing my tooth, that I didn't request and it was my fault I have this insurance (which is very good insurance by the way). "Dana" stated I should talk to the insurance to see if that would help, but yet she states she has had 30 plus years of experience...interesting that someone with that much experience would need help. Dr. Zeines office mistreated me with unprofessional behavior and the dentist I have now had to redo a tooth's he "fixed". Also, I have yet to receive a ADA receipt for all the work done on my even after requesting it on more than one occasion. This is considered illegal under the state of NY. I would suggest if you are a person of color DO NOT go to this dentist. Even if he may be "good" at his job he is not good for people of color and people with developmental disabilities.

It was rather shocking to have the first cavities of my life at 30! Anyway, one of the fillings was extremely painful for months afterward and the dentist who did the work wanted to redo the filling, saying "I might have cracked your tooth". Needless to say I was in the market for a new dentist and a friend of mine (knowing I was going to NY) referred me to Dr. Horri. She agreed to see me even though she really does cosmetic stuff. I was so happy with her, that now I go there when I need to see the dentist. She earned my trust by explaining that minor decay in the enamel can just as well be watched and given extra brushing etc. She didn't see a reason to make a bigger hole for no reason. It really made me wonder if I needed that painful filling in the first place. Anyway - besides knowing that I can count on her not to pressure me into treatments that I don't need - I got my teeth whitened, just a little botox, and lips plumped (that was conservatively done as well - so my mouth doesn't look like an inner tube). After looking at all the before and afters from the major mouth makeovers, I was almost convinced that I should have veneers - she talked me out of that!

I enjoyed the fact that I wasn't being rushed while he was doing his procedure and I appreciated the fact that he patiently answer all my questions. Matter of fact, he was so informative about the questions about nightguard (for grinding teeth) that I went back a couple of weeks later to get a nightguard made by him. The process was seamless and I was in and out in during my lunch break. Now I'm enjoying my perfectly fitting nightguard which has improved my sleeping dramatically. Overall, this has been my 3rd dentist since I moved to NYC and it looks like I'll be sticking with this one for a while.
