White's Market is a small, rustic market. If you need to do a large grocery run, need to feed lots of people, and aren't ready to spend $100+, I'd recommend taking a longer drive off the island so that you won't feel the sticker shock. If you need to pick up a few staples or items that you need for your home cooked lunch or dinner in your summer/rental home, this is the most convenient marketplace for extra goods in Barnegat Light. Purchases here support a local business of the island, which is a nice mental reframe. There's not a large variety of different packaged items, but it does the job when you're in a pinch. They also have household goods, snacks, and produce. There is a butcher in the back of the market as well as pastries and bagels tucked away (I heard they're delicious, but unfortunately I could not have any as I'm gluten free). They also have a mini fridge in the back which hoagies to go as well as cheese. If you want a sandwich made fresh for you or cold cuts to go, they do that too! They also have free tootsie rolls by the butcher which I thought was a cute touch. Note: they are no longer "Cash Only" and accept credit card as payment! Grab a free local newspaper (The Sandpaper - haha so cute) here as well if you want to know high/low tides within the next week. read more

I'm sorry. We order there quite a bit for lunch. And I must say. Some of the sandwich makers are just horrible. Today was one of the worst. Besides the fact they barely wrap the sandwich and shove it in the bag so everything falls to the one side. For the price. At least make it look better than a wawa hoagie. Excellent meats, but pricy. Their breakfast sausage is also really good. Produce is fresh and everything is good quality. It's just expensive because it's seasonal and the only thing nearby. I can't really complain. $25 a pound for ribeye is pretty crazy though. But it's great beef. read more

So I am updating my review from two years ago. Whites is still the best! I cannot wait for summer every year as their steaks are amazing! I have started to buy my sandwiches there also. They are fresh and delicious packed with cold cuts and well worth a trip from the beach to order a hoagie and take back. I only wish they were opened past Labor Day because I would make a trip from home just to buy a few steaks. I usually stock up at summers end to last me a few months. I kept seeing folks make a beeline to the baked goods section, when I went one morning. Every. Single. Person. So obviously I had to take a peek and when I happened upon a blueberry bagel, I nearly did a jig. It was so delicious. Yes, this place is a tad pricey, but I couldn't beat the proximity to our rental house AND the fact that I was able to support a true local small business. My family has owned a house on LBI for over 36 years. Living on the North end of the island, one of necessity learns to plan their grocery trips, since the nearest full-sized supermarket is several miles away on the mainland. For the occasional item, White's will do in a pinch, but keep your expectations very low. First off, Nick is right -it IS a dump. It's small and cramped, and it reeks like a diaper pail. I've heard the brownies they get trucked in daily -and leave out in the open- are amazing, but I can't confirm that, because I can never get past the flies that swarm all over them (seriously... invest in a friggin' pastry case). And yes, given that it runs on a summer tourist economy, the help are often snotty teenagers with rotten attitudes, who apparently resent having to work while the beach is within walking distance. Oh yeah, and bring cash, because the owner is too stingy to pay for a debit/credit card terminal, and his ATM is a ginormous ripoff. read more

I walked into White's, expecting great things... well, bucko, my hopes were shattered very quickly. First of all, it's a cash only business, so prepare to assist them in tax evasion. Also, cmon guys, we know your market sounds like it is run my outdated dwarves, but it is 2018 so get with the program. Now, don't get me wrong, i am fully expecting to be bent over by the high prices of LBI this summer. But whites takes this to a new level. They must be have a bike pump installed into their cash register, because there is no other way that prices should be this inflated. Staff was elitist and rude. I have been a Barnegat Light resident for the past 20 years- cant wait for Whites to open up Memorial Day weekend every year and hate to see it close on Labor Day. Awesome little grocery store for all those last minute things- their sub shop is always packed, the bagels/pastries/desserts are some of the best around. The homemade breakfast sausage and bacon burger are local secrets- and the steaks are off the roof good !!! I LOVE White's so much that I rent a house a few blocks away so I have easy access to one of the most classic places in the state!
