This was a comically bad dining experience. Walked in about an hour before close. The attendant at the counter didn't say hi, didn't welcome us in, just wanted to wash off the barbecue sauce containers, clearly eager to shut down the place; she opened with "we are out of pork, we are out of chicken, we are out of turkey"... we interrupted to ask what they did in fact have available and were told that they had the sausage and chopped brisket. Went with a couple of brisket sandwiches. The attendant had to ask whether we could get slaw added to the sandwiches, even though it states clearly on the menu that you can have that as a free add. Throughout the experience she continued to do nothing but wash off the containers. She clearly wanted us out of there as quickly as possible. Dropped about 30 bucks for the two sandwiches. As for the food itself, mediocre. My sandwich was about 25% fat and solid, charred, inedible chunks. The only reason I'm not giving it one star is because the barbecue sauce itself (the mustard bbq) was really tasty and my guess is that we just got the dregs of the brisket. That and the sauces. If we ever came back I would get tenders and the sauces. Skip the rest I don't come out to eat at places who aren't cooking and just reheating premade food, I can do that at home for a lot cheaper. The Medford location had great service, clean and comfortable environment. Nice vibes. But the food is meh. More Than Q, Dickey's BBQ, Mission BBQ... all significantly better in every way. The food here is fine if you're starving. The greens, the mac and the beans are actually awful. I had to combine the mac with the sausage and load the beans with sauce to get through half of the portions. There was no fixing the greens. Our meats were served lukewarm. The best part of the meal was the side of fries. The original sauce is actually very good and if the meat was hot it would've been decent. The other sauces are just ok, but the spicy ones have no heat... bummer. The jalapeño cheddar sausage was actually decent. Again, this would have been much better had it been hot. In all, a three meat combo was enough for my husband and I to share and we didn't leave hungry. Wouldn't go back, though. read more

I've eaten here a few times as the brewery next door is a favorite of my in-law's. It's very convenient that you can order food from Whole Hog and bring it right next door to the brewery. This time around my husband and I shared a brisket sandwich and a side of the seasonal corn. The brisket was as good as usual and I always appreciate that they have a spicy bbq sauce option as I much prefer that to sweet bbq, but the star of the show this time was the corn. It had a bit of a kick and was very creamy. I could have honestly just had a side of corn to myself and called that good for dinner! I don't know if they will have it next time we are in town visiting, but I am definitely looking forward to it! read more

You are really relying on sauce when your eating the food, which unfortunately means it's a tad bland. Bunch of kind young ladies working around the shop. Decor looks very millennial inspired. Got the platter of 3 ribs, brisket, and jalapeño cheddar sausage. For $23 it filled up but left a lot to be desired. By the time I finished eating the Mac and cheese and potato salad the brisket was cold and rubbery. Corn bread was dry. The great American BBQ was nowhere to be found tonight as we visited Whole Hogg Cafe. I had high expectations for a tender, juicy bite of perfectly sauced brisket, but it was not to be. I was a little disappointed at the brisket. Our group of nine was comfortably seated at the communal picnic tables in the heated outdoor space. I ordered what might be considered the standard fare in most BBQ joints, a Two Meat Combo with cole slaw, a green side salad and cornbread. My brisket was not as juicy as it may have been earlier in the day, so I slathered on their spicy sauce which was delicious. The meat had a nice flavor despite being slightly dry to the chew. My pulled chicken was tender, juicy and very delicious. We ordered at the counter and carried out to the picnic tables. Very disappointing. I stopped in with my wife and we got the smoked turkey and brisket sandwiches and cheesy corn. The turkey was pretty good but the brisket as many others have said he was so dry I could barely choke it down. There are reviews here going back over a year ago saying the same thing so clearly there has been no attempt to improve which says a lot. The flavor is fine and the #3 spicy sauce was excellent but I don't know how they can serve brisket that dry. I also don't know how a side of corn with that much cheese could have so little flavor. read more

I got 2 small extremely dry slices of brisket, and sausage that tasted a week old. I asked for sauce , both containers were almost barely filled. I noticed every time I go in now it's all a very very young staff, even back preparing the food in the kitchen. I always remember this place being great and in recent time it has not been. Today 4/2 we ordered a 2 meat platter with brisket and pulled pork, sides of coleslaw , collards and baked beans. We had accumulated a $10 reward which was used. I am glad we did as the food was subpar.An extremely small portion of pulled pork that was stuck together (size of a golfball) was charred and greasy, 2 pieces of brisket that was dry and difficult to chew even with BBQ sauce. The coleslaw had definitely been around awhile as it was so waterlogged it was translucent and limp, not edible. Food container with all 3 sides and a roll was only part full. We would have definitely gone back if this was not takeout and it was too far to go back again. If we do try again we will look at the food before leaving. What a disappointment! I suspect they do a lot of takeout but we always eat in. There's a microbrewery next door. You can order food here to bring over to the brewery. Each table has a caddy of 6 squeeze bottles of various flavors of bbq sauce to enhance your bbqd meats. It's fun to sample them. The food and the portions are good and the food is served quickly. This was my 2nd experience at Whole Hog. I've lived in Medford for most of my life. For a while Whole Hog was located on route 70 near Rita's. Not too long ago they moved into the Kirby's Feed Mill right on mainstreet. They have a nice parking lot that is shared with a few other businesses. I stopped by around 12:30 pm on a Saturday with my friend and his son. I see burnt ends on cooking shows (they always look so good) but I've never tried them. I was able to try burnt ends from another restaurant a few weeks ago and they were so bad I was hesitant about ordering them from Whole Hog but I'm so glad I did. I didn't want a huge meal. The portion of macaroni and cheese topped with burnt ends pictured in my review was around $9. Very generous portion size for the price. The Mac and cheese was good (not great) and cheesy. It came out within a couple minutes of ordering. The burnt ends had a great bark, tons of flavor, and were extremely tender. When I see them served on BBQ and cooking shows I imagine this is how they taste. From my understanding, burnt ends at whole hog do sell out. The first time I did try to order them they were out for the day. My friend ordered a brisket sandwich and chicken tenders tossed in wing sauce for him and his son. He was pleased with the quality of the food as well as the price. There's a brewery located right next to Whole Hog so you can order your food and bring it next door to eat while enjoying a beer or two. read more

Whole Hog is a big hit at my work. Every Friday we order lunch and this place is on our rotation since it's so close. I got to try it for the first time last week after hearing my coworkers RAVE about it. I had never had anything from here before and am semi picky- so I decided to do a kids meal because it seemed like a decent portion to try out something. Also was a great price and a good sized meal! I got the pulled pork with a side of mac and cheese and sauce #5 (I believe a sweet BBQ type of sauce?) The picture below shows the portion size. It says it's 3 ounces of meat, I'm assuming maybe half of a normal portion? Either way- delicious!! The sauce was great also and I love that it comes on the side. The mac and cheese was good as well. We came to town to pick up our rescue pup from his foster mom. Having driven from CT, we reached the Whole Hog Cafe just before opening time (11:30 am). The restaurant is currently operating as a carry out only right now. There is also no seating offered outside, so we opted to eat in the car. It's not the easiest thing to eat in a car, but we managed. My husband ordered the pulled pork, I ordered the brisket & cornbread with two sides (potato salad & coleslaw) and our son had the pork & baked beans. My husband added the Carolina style sauce as well as their standard bbq sauce to his order. He was happy he did, because the meat was slightly dry. My brisket was well cooked with enough seasoning and moist enough that I didn't need any sauce. The cornbread was great. It has a slight sweetness to it and it was not dry or crumbly. The potato salad was great, I couldn't keep my son away from it. If we lived in the area I would definitely visit this restaurant again. The people were friendly the establishment was clean. The staff wore masks and enforced the wearing of masks. It would be great if they could add outdoor seating, especially for out-of-towners like us. read more

They gave me one small plastic container of sauce, which was not enough. So it was cold and dry, just meat on a bun, nothing else (even though their site said it came with slaw on the sandwich). I asked for "hot" BBQ sauce and what I got was not spicy at all. If you eat in, you may get a hotter sandwich with more sauce, but I would not recommend taking it to go. read more

My only regret about going into Whole Hog is that I haven't gone in sooner. I've been in many times, but wanted to take the time to write a review now that they're in their new space at the Feed Mill. The new space is beautiful, spacious, and has a wonderful artisan/industrial feel to it. The food is as good as always, which is VERY good. My daughter and I came in close to closing 7:40 and decided to order takeout. We ordered a sliced brisket sandwich and wings. When we got home we opened the sandwich and there was 2 small pieces of brisket that was not sliced it was (best I can explain) a tube , skinny hot dog or about .375 x .375 by 4 inches layer across the bun. The wings were dry and did not have a sauce that we requested. I will say my daughter enjoyed her mac and cheese.
