Passed this place on the way to the hotel from the airport so I tried it for dinner. I ordered online and picked up the takeout on time. Staff was pleasant and attentive after I waited a few minutes. They have bottled beer in a large ice chest behind the counter, no tap. I came to find out While Hog is not a 'Local' place but a version of a quick BBQ. Not your BBQ Grille Atmosphere. I ordered a two meat plate with brisket and pork loin. Side of baked beans and coleslaw. I also had a salad with raspberry vinaigrette. My first impression was the servings were on the small side. I'm all for portion control but still this was a little weak. The meat although very tasty and moist left me wanting more but there wasn't any. The salad or should I say lettuce with two cherry tomatoes and a pinch of cheese was not wilted. I did the plates of ribs coming out of the window and they looked great. SO.GOOD. The pulled pork was awesome and I loved the bbq sauce! I had pulled pork with green beans and fried okra. The green beans weren't amazing but not bad. The okra was great! My husband got the pulled pork and brisket with baked beans and Cole slaw. The baked beans are AMAZING!!! Do yourself a favor and get those beans. Overall great food and super nice people! I was in Springfield for a work trip and stayed at the Drury Inn. I noticed the whole hog was just a short walk across the parking lot so we decided to give it a try for lunch. When you walk in, there is a chalkboard menu that includes any current specials. There are plenty of options for bbq plates, sandwiches, salads and more. When you place your order, you pick your own seat and they call your name when it's ready. I was impressed with their SIX different sauces they offer at every table. We had the pulled pork sandwich, catfish special with hushpuppies, coleslaw, potato salad, and green beans. Everyone enjoyed all their food and the sauces we tried were excellent. The coleslaw is a creamy just the way I like it. They do have seltzers and beer if you want alcohol. They also have one of those cool Coke machines that allow you to electronically choose from several sodas, seltzers, and more while adding flavors and customizing to your liking. Been eating bbq for over 60 years all over the country. I have never seen brisket sliced so thin ever.... nowhere. It seemed dry to me -- needing extra sauce. I like my brisket juicy so I don't even need sauce. Sausage was ok. Pulled pork was average. Bread that was served was like a school lunch roll. How about some Texas toast or something? Service: the man at the register (bald with what a appeared to be a sweatband) was terribly ill mannered. When I ordered a Bud Light, as was advertised by a neon sign and a chalk board with prices, he responded quite rudely that they don't sell beer. I pointed up at the signs, he responded with " I don't know why we don't sell it and I don't care!" A gal came from behind and started to talk about a trough issue etc... Please note, when we called ahead we were informed that they did indeed sell beer. 2. Cleanliness, the place was FILTHY!!!!! There was something greasy and almost snot like on the screen of the drink machine Bathrooms were filthy, and stunk of sewer. The floors were covered in trash and dirt streaked. 4. Food Quality. What was supposed to be hot was warm and what was supposed to be cold was warm. How in good conscience can you sell chicken nachos with chips you see in high school concession stands and fake cheese product? After a 10 hour car ride we were hungry and we really wanted to try the local bbq place that was recommended. We get to the door.... and they had just closed. Now what? We see the drive thru open and walk over to maybe take food to go to the hotel. The owner Abby was so nice. She said "cmon - you are out of town visitors, I'll let you in!" The front staff DJ and Kaela were so friendly. DJ even made us some Asian wings he recommended and they were awesome. Sweet and spicy and so yummy! We had a sampler of pork , brisket snd ribs. We came in on a Sunday afternoon, the crowds were minimal and our group (though fairly large) was able to order quickly, find seating without trouble and be served while people were still serving themselves drinks. The food was great, I especially enjoyed the pulled pork as it is a great favorite if mine. And the sides had variety and lacked nothing in flavor. If your looking for a quick stop for BBQ on the north side of Springfield THIS IS YOUR PLACE! I'd give it a 7/10 overall, merely because it is no fine dining establishment and I reserve the three utmost stars for restaurants of that style. Excellent choice for barbecue. Pulled pork nachos were good, but adding a side of their baked beans ON the nachos was a game changer. My husband had the ribs, and being from Mississippi, is picky.. and he raved about the ribs. Fall off the bone goodness. Now let's talk about the staff. Only 2 people working through lunch on a Saturday. I'm guessing, given the times we are in, people didn't show up... but these two teamed up and got it done. The poor cook in the back was getting the meals out as fast as he could. And all in all, the wait wasn't really terrible. Neither was complaining about being short staffed, I only knew because someone asked why their meal was taking so long... and she explained "he's back there by himself."... didn't even mention she was too! Located directly next door to Ruby Tuesdays, the parking lot of Whole Hog stayed empty each time that we frequented Ruby Tuesdays. The Yelp reviews and over rating here were pretty good and my husband got tired of RTs, so we decided to give this place a whirl. You order at the front, so it's fast casual style and then they bring the food out to your table. The fountain drinks are self served from a fancy Coke machine. You can add flavorings to an assortment of soda and Dasani water options. They also have an array of craft beers. I was there on a Friday, which happened to be their pulled rib plate. You can choose just the sandwich, or the sandwich and two sides. I chose the meal with the sides, of course. The fries were more like breakfast potatoes, and they tasted freezer burnt or something odd. The nice lady who took our order allowed me to swap the "fries" for a side salad. The baked beans were ok, nothing phenomenal. I will say that my sandwich was tasty and filling though. My husband started with a bowl of chili. It was annoying that they charged an additional $.89 for sour cream when the picture at the register included the sour cream and she didn't mention the fee after asking if he would like cheese and sour cream. Not a huge deal, but I hate hidden and additional fees. He was still hungry after the chili, so he ordered burnt ends and they were the fattiest selection I've ever seen. He couldn't eat them and I didn't blame him... the waitress also said that they were unusually fatty. She swapped it out with brisket. The brisket cut was similar to swarma, not like the cuts that we've had at other places. Overall, I hate to be a Debbie Downer about it, but I'd probably give the experience a two. Having lived in Texas for 5 years now, I've had good bbq and not so good bbq. This is really good bbq! I had the chicken and ribs. Both have great flavor on their own and don't even need any sauce. Although I did buy 2 bottles of sauce to take home cuz it's that good. The rub and the smoke on the meat are great! The potato salad is amazing! Get it! Good slaw too. Why only 3 stars? Fruit flies kept buzzing me the whole time. Where there are fruit flies, something is rotten and needs cleaning. Idk what it is, but it gives me concern. Second I saw the cooking staff eating with their fingers. So I question their cleanliness practices. Absent that, they would get 5 stars for the food. I ate at a Whole Hog Cafe in Little Rock AR a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it!!!.... SOOOOOO I slam on the brakes and turn into this joint to get a late lunch. The smell of smoked BBQ filled the parking lot... my mouth started watering for their burnt ends and potato salad that I remember having so many years ago. I just hope I wasnt getting my expectations of the great BBQ I had in Little Rock AR. I stepped inside and checkout their menu board. WOW.. there it was... the Burnt Ends!!! So I asked the lady at the cash register if this Whole Hog was related to the one in Little Rock, She said that it originated in Little Rock and the Owner stops in at this location every once in a while... OK GAME ON!!! Burnt End: YES!!! Absolutely delicious!!! Potato Salad: YES!!! Last JUST like I had back in Little Rock for which I fell in love with... the chucked potatoes with bits of smoked bacon throughout... I even changed my own potato recipe to add bacon bits because of theirs!!! Whole Hog won BBQ championships 20 years ago. But the BBQ they are serving now is not championship worthy. I had brisket. Its was super thinly sliced, and was way overcooked. It looked STEAMED. Just finished the half rack of ribs that were amazing, possibly the best ever eaten. I am normally a sauce guy, but ordered these glazed that is a brush of sauce and with the perfectly done ribs, additional sauce was not necessary. I did however, try each of the 6 sauce offerings though, and the one i was sampling was always my favorite. The baked beans were a nice side-order that did not overpower the exceptional taste of the ribs. The Coleslaw was perfect for me; moist, fresh and great tasting. We found this place on accident, we were looking for another restaurant I had plan on taking my Grandfather to eat dinner that night, but we kept running into blocked roads from President being in town. We noticed by chance and Grandpa said let's eat some BBQ, so we stopped in and soon as we opened the door the sweet smell of BBQ meats filled he air. My husband and sister split a full rack of their ribs and couple of side and they loved it very much. They said said the meat was so tender and juicy, and by time I had got my grandfather settled with his ice tea he found out he wasn't fan of sweet tea, they had tried at least 4 of 6 sauces they had to offer to go on the meats. Grandpa and I had the special, pulled pork sandwich, burnt end cheesy corn and some potato salad . We both liked it but was just a bit to spicy for grandpa, but he still ate it all. Great portions and good flavor. Pulled pork was moist and better than the brisket; thin sliced. I was slid a small portion of burnt ends and wow, best of the three. Beans had some sausage in it and were okay. If you like spicy, go with their #4 Sauce, Traditional Southern Vineger & Spice. Shake it first though. For lunch, I asked my coworker to choose where to eat. He said that we should try Whole Hog Cafe. He had been there many times and since I'm from out of town and like BBQ, I agreed. The restaurant is pretty big. Once you walk in the door, there is a large menu board with all of the choices. It was pretty easy to navigate through the menu and I decided to get the 2 item combo. I ordered the sliced brisket with sausage and for the two sides, I got cheesy corn and cole slaw and the entree will also include a roll. They also have a freestyle Coke machine so you have a ton of choices of liquid crack to wash down your food. From the time to my order to the time that I got my food, it was about 10 minutes. Not too long of a wait. There were only about 5 others seated in the restaurant at two other tables. For lunch, I expected a BBQ place to be busier. Hopefully this wasn't foreshadowing. Wish I could have ordered ribs as part of my 2 item combo but ribs can't be included as part of the combo unfortunately. I decided that I wasn't that hungry and didn't want to set myself up for a food coma. I really liked the cole slaw. It was fresh, crisp, and had a nice sweet and tart flavor to it. The cheesy corn was decent albeit cold. So of course, we know when liquefied cheese gets cold or is served cold, it looks all coagulated and unappetizing. The roll was nothing spectacular.... it was a roll. Butter makes everything taste good, right? The sausage was very good. It didn't look like much sliced but I would definitely order the sausage again. I was just disappointed that the sausage was cold though. Let's get to the brisket. I've had good brisket at other BBQ establishments and I was hoping that this smoked brisket would be the same. The brisket slices looked really dull and drab from a color standpoint. Good brisket that I've had in the past usually have a brighter color to it with the skin being a reddish or contrasting color. This brisket was pretty much just one color. Unfortunately, the brisket was cold and it tasted like one color. I'm just trying to figure out why a BBQ establishment would serve cold food and I almost felt like my brisket wasn't cooked today but maybe a leftover from the day before that was pulled out of the oven. I was disappointed to say the least. Maybe I caught them on an off day. I've seen other reviews for WHC and they seem to be more positive than mine. Three sides...Cole slaw, baked beans and potato salad. All were yummy. I did squirt a bit of sauce #5 in the beans. The slab of ribs was huge and the rub on them was so good that no sauce was used. How this got 4 stars is beyond me. We stopped for lunch, hoping for some decent if not good BBQ. Brisket was tough and had no seasoning. The pulled chicken was chunks of chicken breast with no seasoning and just a tiny tiny bit of smoke flavor. I will give some credit because it wasn't dry. The smoked green beans were cooked to mush with some kind of meat in them and again, no flavor. Cheesy corn was just ok. Fried okra was typical deep fried, and credit for not being slimy. Soda machine yielded tasteless sodas.We did get our order quickly, served to our table by a nice enough kid in pj pants. I sincerely hope we just caught them on a really bad day and this isn't representative of Missouri BBQ. read more
