I was so moved, even from my seat on the VERY LAST ROW, I bawled my eyes out for the whole last song. Then I realized it was only the end of Act 1. One of those gifts of life.. I then went on to enjoy Act 2 just as much. Amazing, amazing show. Even with my high expectations. I'm obsessed with the soundtrack now. Hands down the best musical I've seen. They raffle out free tickets before every show.. I went several times but never got it. Your chances are decent, they give out at least 10 or so tickets. It's just over 100 people show up (even in 20 degree weather in the dead of winter). Thank god for birthdays.. my friend took me and it was the best gift ever. read more

I have to follow everyone else's reviews and say that Wicked is also now my favorite broadway show. The storyline is wonderful, funny, and has a great message, and the set work and songs, voices, and music were just incredible. I highly recommend this show, especially if you're visiting NYC for the first time. Wicked has got to be the best Broadway show I've ever seen. Granted, I've only been to ~4 shows but none of them even compared to Wicked. The dialogue was hilarious and the score/songs were prefect. I was singing the songs for the show for the entire week after! We went the on 1/18/2014 and Alli Mauzey was Glinda for the night. She was absolutely phenomenal. She was so perky and enthusiastic and I loved every second she was on stage. Lindsay Mendez, who played Elphaba, hit all the notes perfectly. I just loved everyone's performance! Wicked is definitely a show for both the kiddies and the adults. I loved how they traced Elphaba and Glinda from when they were in school all the way until after the events in the Wizard of Oz. This is my third time seeing Wicked. The first 2 times, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth were starring as Elphaba and Glinda respectively. Truth be told, they owned the roles. I would give their performances 5 stars without a doubt. I wanted to share Wicked with my oldest daughter and she loved it. I am a bit of a harsher critic. The 2 actresses who played Elphaba and Glinda didn't bring anything new to the characters. They were basically mimicking Idina and Kristin's interpretation of the roles. Normally when new actors come to long running shows, they bring their interpretation of the character to the role. Change it up a bit. That was not the case with Wicked. The actors simply copied the original star's performances and unfortunately fell short. I would still recommend the show, but not if you saw it with the original cast. read more

Note: This is really a 4.5--5 from me, but this was my very first Broadway show and a 4 from my friends I was with who have seen Wicked multiple time. I watched a Thursday evening performance in mid-March. I was absolutely ecstatic to have this as my first Broadway show! We didn't buy tickets ahead of time--we went straight to "future sales" to get our tickets. For $147, we sat very close and had a great view of the show. All the sales people were quite friendly (for being in NYC), and we did spend a significant amount of money on t-shirts ($37 for a shirt) and memorabilia (~$60 for a snow globe). Also, if you want a drink, you have to get it in one of their "Wicked" cups, which can be good or bed since it's extra money, but you get a wicked cup! Just expect everything to be expensive--it's Broadway! If possible, rush to the bathroom lines. I spent the whole intercession waiting in the longest line I've ever been in for a bathroom, literally. But, with a bit of a jog, I definitely made it back to the show in time. The show was absolutely PHENOMENAL! I found myself laughing and close to tears at times, there were moments when I held my breath and smiled so hard it started to hurt! Both Glinda (Kara Lindsay) and Elphaba (Caroline Bowman) were amazing. Elphaba captured your attention every time she sang, but my heart really belonged to Glinda--she definitely made me laugh every time she opened her mouth! The cast was all great, with the exception of Fiyero. I thought he played the part well, but his singing was not as strong as I expected it to be. It's difficult to be paired with Glinda and Elphaba, but I thought that Fiyero, as a main character, would be stronger and capable of pairing with the female leads. The friends I was with have seen Wicked ~3-4 times and this specific show they thought was a little rushed. We listened to the soundtrack afterward, and I definitely heard the difference in timing. However, as a first-time Broadway seer, I thought it was terrific! I highly recommend this show! read more

Wicked was my first Broadway show. I loved how the story line was engaging and how they connect it all to the original Wizard of Oz. This show does not disappoint! The show was beyond anything that I could have expected, the singing blew me away and gave me chills at times, the costumes were so elegantly made with imagination, the special effects worked great with the transitions and the cast was simply phenomenal. This show is good for everyone, young and old and for everyone who grew up watching the Wizard of Oz. Wicked had me engaged throughout the show, had me laughing, nearly had me in tears, and had me wanting to come back for more! Definitely worth the price! Amazing show!! Great storyline, funny, and the actors kept the audience entertained. The theater is small, so no worries if you don't want to spend a ton on tickets, but I do suggest sitting in the middle. These were the most comfortable seats I've sat in compared to other theaters, but the space between rows is an it tight. WARNING* do not attempt to purchase any hard liquor here. you will be paying close to 20$ for a 1/2 shot of liquor and a cup full of juice. Stick to beer/wine. Drinks come in a lovely wicked cup, which is great as a souvenir. Especially since the gift shop is extremely overpriced compared to other shows. Parking garage located in front of theater, alone with metered parking on the street which I highly suggest to save some $. Get there early, or you'll be waiting outside 10 min past show time. During intermission, zoom to the restroom before anything, the wait time was approx 20min for the female restroom. read more

I waited to watch this show for a couple months. My date finally won the ticket lottery on his 4th try! So, we got front row seats for $26.25/each compared to the $300 ticket-seats behind us. I could see the actors spit - and they spit a lot. I could see the wrinkles on their faces. I could see the wig lines. Anyways - you get the point. - I was close. The set was amazing, perfect to every last detail. I thought the singing was great and powerful. The story/lyrics was well-written as well. After years of procrastinating, I finally crossed it off the bucket list of shows to see. Wicked has a very beautiful and elaborate production. The cast had amazing and strong voices. The acting was great. The story was sentimental and offered a few surprises. Great storyboard. However, the play felt extremely long in some acts. There wasn't one song that stood out since they all sounded similar. Simple and easy dialogue was sung which felt unnecessary. This was such a wonderful experience that I would recommend to anyone! It was my first time going to see a Broadway play and it exceeded all of my expectations. We were seated in row K, which was the perfect seating! I couldn't imagine sitting anywhere closer because it would have been too close with a lot of the action happening above. The cast was amazing and the show was an emotional rollercoaster (I definitely shed a few tears from both laughing and crying). The musical itself is amazing, the storyline is impeccable and it's fun to see how they weave it in the original Wizard of Oz story. On top of that, the Gershwin is phenomenal. It's a beautiful theater. You can't go wrong with this show. It's good for any and all ages. I never thought I would like a musical...this was the first one I saw and loved it. This is my favorite musical- so far! I've seen many Off-Broadway and Broadway productions including: Book of Mormon, Newsies, Kinky Boots, On the Town, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, Avenue Q, Sondheim in the Park- Into the Woods, as well as a couple of others. But Wicked is really spectacular. I've been lucky enough to win the lottery twice, once in 2012, back when you could score front row seats for less than $30, and the second time was last night. It's not a wonder how they've been open for so long since it's such an amazing production from the costumes, the singing, the dancing, to the special effects. I'm especially a fan of the songs from the Wicked soundtrack. And, it's so much better to listen to these songs live- so many instances where chills were sent through my body, super invigorating. If you've seen The Wizard of Oz (because who hasn't?) then you need to come and see this show- the untold story. read more

I grew up singing along to many songs from Wicked and am thrilled to finally have seen it on Broadway. This is one that's been on my list for a really long time. We pulled the trigger during my "Christmas week" celebration with my guy, and splurged a bit on nice dinner and Broadway tickets. Got them on StubHub for about $268. Orchestra section, but all the way off to stage right, with a partially obstructed view. The distance from the stage was actually pretty decent - just wish we were centered a bit more. As for the actual play, it was everything I'd anticipated. The cast was wonderful, the songs as great live as they were on my iPod Nano in middle school. The story was so touching and, although Dorothy from WOZ didn't actually make an appearance, you do see the other main characters towards the end. I'd recommend trying to buy last-minute box office tickets to avoid Stubhub fees. read more

Musical was amazing!!! Everyone needs to go see Wicked. The costumes and the sets were really good. Their singing capability was wonderful. They had strong voices. I really liked the characters glinda and elphaba. Glinda or Ga-linda was really funny with her selfish ego. Elphaba was really touching. But I felt like the book was sadder than the musical and Elphaba was always picked on and considered an outcast. My favorite songs in the musical was Popular and Defying Gravity. Loved it!! It has been some time since I have read the book but it sorta came as a surprise to find out that the Wizard was actually Elphaba's father. And how fiarro, Elphaba's lover was the scarecrow from Dorothy and the wizard of Oz. There's a lot of heart in the story and it moves quickly so you don't even realize how quickly things are going. The story ties into the wizard of oz nicely as a prequel and enjoyably so. A must see! Definitely not what you're expecting, but you'll have a great time. The boyfriend surprised me with tickets and some great seats. The show is almost 3 hours long - including starting late and intermission. Majority of the seats in the theatre are good, but the middle is the best, not too close and not too far. The show itself is great. Great songs, great story and there are funny parts as well. The story took a different turn that I was not expecting and I totally loved their take on Oz. Between the original movie, the play and the movie (Oz the Great and Powerful), they are all great and don't outplay the original story. You won't be disappointed. I love this musical. Yes, it's cheesy. Yes, it's commercial. Yes, the songs are sing-songy. Yes, the plot is somewhat predictable. No, the current cast will never be as talented as the original cast. (Ohmygod, how often I listen to the soundtrack.) Nonetheless, it still remains my most favorite musical. It is heartwrenching, sweet, and clever. The songs vary in genre, which keeps things interesting. It is so entertaining and is truly a journey in two and a half hours. I've seen this show in front row (I still have my 'I won the Wicked Lottery' button!) and in Melbourne, Australia, and both times were fantastic. There's a reason it always sells out. I almost cried during the musical, but caught myself when I realized it was *just* a story and not a tale that I was interconnected within. It is everything a Broadway musical should be - a magical feast for the eyes (you're always left wondering how they did certain stage tricks), catchy songs (I can't even hear the word 'popular' without going "LAR!!!") and a strong storyline to create a foundation. read more

How can you live/visit NYC without seeing Wicked? I read the book (which I thought was dark) and walked out of the show humming the catchy songs and feeling inspired. This was a great Broadway experience, the theater wasn't too large so it felt intimate, the costumes and cast were phenomenal and props to the bartender who made my $18 glozmopolitan because I was super buzzed by the intermission. So we were worried the show might have been cancelled due to the weather and to be honest I was hoping it would've been because I didn't want to venture out into the cold. However, I am so happy that wasn't the case. I've heard nothing but great things and it lived up to my expectations. We sat in orchestra row x 5,7 and had a great view of the stage. Our tickets were not too bad since we took advantage of Broadway's buy two for one deal. Apparently there was also a promo code from broadway up which allowed our friends to buy tickets the same night at the same promo price and sit in our row. The reasons this is a 4 instead of a 5 star review are: The guy taking tickets and directing people to their seats was so unfriendly and ornery it took us aback. Clearly someone was hoping for a snow day. They don't announce or give any indication you need to take your seat before they start playing music and characters run on stage at the beginning of the show or after intermission. There were a few obvious flubs from the cast and times when they broke character. Some of the songs were a little meh and glinda was really over acting in the scene where she and elphaba become friends in their dorm room. It started off low energy but I must say got a lot better. The singing from the wicked witch was truly fantastic and the set design and transitions from one scene to the next was well done. read more

I have not seen the Broadway show for Wicked, so take that into consideration. I expected more from "Behind the Emerald Curtain" than it delivered, particularly for $38. The "tour" consists of two parts--one is standing around the theater lobby while someone discusses the sets and shows off some costumes and photos, and the other is sitting in the theater watching a DVD play on a 20-foot screen. The lobby portion is crowded and uncomfortable, and it is difficult to see the speaker and costumes as she is discussing them. The theater portion is like watching portions of a DVD that involve a few interviews with the show's creators. I learned a bit about the mounting of a Broadway production, and it was impressive to hear about the thought that went into the sets and costumes, but this certainly wasn't the sort of "tour" or peak "behind the scenes" I was expecting. I imagine a half hour searching online for Wicked information would yield about the same sort of information. read more

Best Broadway show I have seen! Wicked is hands down the best Broadway show playing. All of the cast members are extremely talented and have amazing voices. I'm not the biggest fan of musicals but Wicked blew me away. The story was intriguing and kept me involved. I loved all of the songs especially defying gravity, no one mourns the wicked, as long as your mine...actually I loved every song I heard! I ended up buying the CD and still listen to it. Wicked was the first ever musical I had watched on stage. A friend had bought me tickets when it came through SF 7 years ago and it's still one of my favorites. I've seen it more than a few times and it just blows me away every time. The singing, costuming, set were just wow - mindblowing. Being from San Diego, we knew that we HAD to watch a Broadway show in New York and I'm happy we did! I always heard great things about the Broadway shows, 'Wicked' being one of them. I don't like musicals much. I never really got into the popular tv show "Glee" because of all the singing and the actors breaking into chorus. But I, admittedly, really enjoyed "Wicked"!!!! The actors/ singers were all amazing! I especially fell in love with Rachel Tucker's voice, she played Elphaba. Glinda cracked me up! The cast was hilarious and fun to watch!
