I ordered the Greek chicken entree. It was nothing to rave about. If you are looking for bland broccoli and rice, this is your meal. The chicken was overly seasoned. I was disappointed. My husband enjoyed his tortellini with peas. That's saying something because he doesn't usually eat peas. If you're into cannabis there is an apothecary at the entrance of the building. Thursdays are "family night" - prefix 3 course menu with a theme. Tonight's menu featured a blue cheese garden salad, fried chicken with homemade biscuits and a spicy, honey drizzle, and a smore-inspired dessert. The salad was a surprising delight - creamy without being overpowering - and a nice way to ensure some vedge made its way into the meal! The main course was the fried chicken, homemade biscuits and a side of creamy mashed potatoes and string beans. We enjoyed the gravy that topped the mashed potatoes (a chicken reduction that complimented the fried chicken) and the spicy honey that we drizzled liberally over both the chicken and biscuits. Passed by here on the way back from Mendocino and what a jewel! It's located inside a beautiful Mediterranean style boutique hotel that I believe specializes in marijuana tourism. I didn't know there was such a things as marijuana tourism, but it certainly makes sense to have this restaurant downstairs! The ambiance is cozy, much like a tucked away Italian taverna. The staff seem really happy to work there, laughing and joking with each other. They play a lot of fun 90s and 2000s rock and pop tunes. They specialize in wood fired pizzas, but there are lovely surprises like inventive salads and octopus with a sauce that you soak up with your pizza crust. We especially enjoyed the grilled oysters which are hard to find on menus. read more

A casual restaurant at The Madrones (a compound of guest rooms, tasting rooms, restaurants, and shops) in Philo, in Anderson Valley wine country. They serve lunch and dinner, inside and outside, and offer a seasonal, locally sourced menu. We enjoyed lunch outside in the their beautiful garden. We split a gorgeous beet salad and a nettle pizza with bacon added. Both were delicious! My dining partner enjoyed a glass of local rosé and I opted for a unique local kombucha. The pricing is reasonable and service friendly and attentive, yet relaxed. It felt like we were on vacation! Make a reservation. And then enjoy a tasty meal before or after wine tasting! What can I say about Wickson Restaurant that already hasn't been said. Nestled between the delicious wineries, we discovered this amazing dining experience that not only was tastefully decorated and served up tasty dishes! Since it was such a beautiful day, we opted to sit in their patio. Walking past the kitchen and to the shaded patio, I couldn't help but notice the already fired up pizza oven. I didn't even look at the menu and I already knew one of the items we'd be ordering was a wood fired pizza. But stepping through the kitchen felt so familiar, like I was about to enjoy a great meal at a good friends home. Reading the wine & spirit menu, I was happy to see that some of the wineries we visited were available here. I opted for a pinot from a location which we've not yet visited; the Phillips Hill pinot. We started off our meal with oysters and their patatas bravas which we savored. And as anticipated, we dove into a fresh out of the oven sausage pizza. I have to say, the Wickson is located in a cute little hotel. Our next trip to Anderson Valley will land us staying at this hotel, with another wonderful meal at the Wickson. read more

My group of seven stopped at Wickson for a last minute lunch before wine tasting and even though we gave them only 30 minutes notice, they whipped up a fantastic spread for us in no time. Everyone was so friendly and service was impeccable. I felt like I was at home, sharing a meal with loved ones in a space I was completely comfortable in. At the same time, I felt transported to some small town in Spain or the European countryside. The open wood fire stove was amazing, and to sit right next to it while our order was being prepared made it feel extra special. The food was spectacular. We ordered one of each appetizer except for the oysters and tartare. The surprising favorite was the Caesar salad and the quinoa bowl. The whipped feta was delicious. The The cocktail menu is also great, complements the food so well. Wickson Restaurant has become an absolute must visit whenever I have plans to visit the area or am just driving through. Next time I will be making plans to stay at The Madrones which is next door! I had the suckling pig tacos special with a glass of sparkling and a bite off of everyone's else's plate at the table. I loved everything! Not only was the food great, the service was as well. Our server, to whom I'm extremely sorry I don't remember your name, was extremely kind, provided great recommendations, knowledgeable of the menu and where food was sourced from, made sure we were taken care of the whole time. One of the worst dining experiences (anywhere), on our way from San Jose to Mendocino. No patio table, when it was requested while making reservation. We waited over thirty minutes to be seated when no one else was in line and another 30 minutes for one of the hapless servers to stop by. She had this bewildered look when we asked her to describe a certain Chardonnay - being a server in motherlode of the wine country, she was clueless. Later she admitted that she had never tasted any food at this place and could not tell the difference between white sauce and red sauce, on Pinsa. For that matter, we wonder if anyone in that whole establishment had any idea about what Pinsa is, which, here, turned out to be overly dried piece of flatbread with dull toppings sprinkled with tasteless sauce. On hearing about our experience, the gutless manager chose to talk to the only other couple in the dining room, who were determined to enjoy the evening by soaking their white sauce "pinsa' in a hot honey sauce, to make it edible, at our recommendation. Finally, for the Peach Cobbler, the resourceful kitchen staff somehow scraped the last morsel from the pan and served it cold, in what looked like a lump of dog 'poo'. And their motto is that if we scraped it for you, you must pay! This manager assured us that following our experience at Wickson, the remainder of our trip would undoubtedly go better. read more

Wickson is so good! Everything we had was delish - the house bread is a must get! It's super yummy (think soft n fluffy focaccia with a nice crispy crust) and it's the pizza dough that may or may not get used, so it's a super clever way not to waste! The pastas both had the good chew of homemade pasta I expected. Everything was cooked expertly and with love. Chef Jason and Chef Jenny were both super friendly and welcomed me watching them prep and cook. We had dinner and went back for lunch the next day to try their pizzas and more food love. I would totally come back again and recommend it to anyone staying or passing through Anderson Valley! Also, this review is for Wickson post Chef Jason takeover a few months ago. They have a pretty limited menu (understandably why with the small open kitchen), but everything we had was done really well. read more

Recent experience dining at Wickson was not pleasant. First, there is no real area to check in for dinner so you just have to get lucky and catch a server coming through the gift shop or front desk area to let them know you're there. We had a 6:45 reservation but for some reason two groups without reservations were seated before us and we were not at our table until 7pm. Our server was friendly and checked on us often but we had to request our patio heater be turned on twice before it was done. Food was not at all special. Roasted chicken was so salty and came with a minuscule amount of asparagus. Sausage and potato meal was ok, but not anything I'd order again. And the charred cheesecake was terrible, it was virtually tasteless. For a meal that ran a good amount above $200, it all should have been much better. read more

From the moment we set foot in Wickson, it was off. We were a few minutes late (less than 10 and inside dining was empty; outside was not full). Although we had a reservation, they seemed to have nowhere to seat three people. The host was out of sorts and clearly annoyed. We were sat at one table and then moved to another. When we finally landed in a seemingly ok place, when I took a few minutes to comfort my child on the bench, they came and took my chair away. We were about to call it and just leave, but we were hungry and the reviews all seemed good for the restaurant. It took ~ 10-15 minutes for our waitress to come to our table, and when she did, she was clearly annoyed and overwhelmed. I asked to try a certain wine, because the gentleman (with his partner and their small child) at a nearby table had done the same - apparently I either needed to be a man or have a different waitress to be afforded that courtesy. (For the record, they were seated at a table that was ready for them, and they were trying wine and ordering dinner before we even met our waitress. We ordered a number of different plates to share; our food took an inordinate about of time to come out. We could see, and hear, the kitchen struggling; we asked for our food to come when it was available and even then, it took forever. Each dish was unceremoniously plopped on our table, often with a comment about how little room they had to put the food on our table - the table they put us at. Our party was two adults and a child, and we had to ask for a plate and a fork, for a five year old who looks 7 - a requested water glass and napkin never came. Our food was mediocre and nothing I would return for. The chef and staff were unprofessional and disturbing at times. I could understand they were in the weeds but I could not understand how little the chef was able to communicate what was going on in their kitchen. We mistakenly ordered dessert (our daughter wanted a treat after a long day) and 15 minutes later they told us they ran out of the chocolate mousse - we couldn't tell if this was just because no one was counting or if our waitress just never checked. They comped us the second dessert - the Creme Catalan - but it was inedible due to the awful, grainy and curdled texture. Over the course of over two hours at the restaurant (because of the food timing - we would have happily been there for a shorter period), we watched the chef, kitchen staff, and our waitress struggle to handle the night. Not all tables were taken, and things were being 86'd frequently, but communication was non-existent and we never felt welcome at the restaurant. Judging from the comments overheard from the table next to us, we were not the only ones left unimpressed by Wickson. I wanted to love this place; I wanted it to be an amazing dining experience, but instead I felt uncomfortable, unwelcome, and unsatisfied - and I never want to feel that way in a restaurant again. With any luck, the next time we're back in the area, there will be a restaurant suitable for that location in Wickson's place. read more

We have eaten here before and it was good. We came again for Easter dinner and, oh my goodness! There has been a staff change in the kitchen and it was a change for the better. Everything was so delicious and creative! We started with a quartet of deviled eggs that I thought was an interesting and cheeky nod to the holiday. Each one was different and beautiful. There was smoked salmon, caviar and I'm not sure what was on the other two but, they were delicious. We also had the Papas Bravas, and a stuffed artichoke that was so scrumptious I didn't want to share but, I did. For our main my husband and me both ordered the lamb shank. Mmmmmmmmmm! I arrived looking beautiful. I gave the shank bone a little tug and I slipped out with no resistance leaving the lamb retaining its shape. That's a good sign! The meat was soft and juicy. The potatoes underneath were velvety. The whole dish was so comforting and tasty. This was our favorite visit to Wickson. The whole place is run by women now and has such a joyful vibe. I think it makes for such a great experience when the kitchen and staff are happy. We felt so welcome and the food tasted like it was made by happy people who love what they do! The only thing that could make this visit to Wickson better was to get a room. Luckily we did! Thank you The Madrones and Wickson! We'll see you again soon! read more

This is the new in-house restaurant at The Madrones. We ate there shortly after they first opened up. It was during Covid so it was outdoor seating only and it was during the fires so it was a little smoky. But the staff was excellent the customer service was excellent and the food was great. Part of the appeal at staying at The Madrones is onsite dining and onsite wineries. The Wickson is a welcomed addition and we look forward to many good meals here during our visits to Anderson Valley. read more

We all have off days, and I appreciate that Chef Jen was willing to go above and beyond to make our experience better. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Oof man, I don't love to leave bad reviews, but my experience at Wickson was so disappointing tonight that I felt it was my duty to post a review, since the latest reviews are from a month + ago, and the quality has definitely diminished recently. For context, I've been to Wickson a few times. Once when it was a restaurant called Stone and Ember, which was phenomenally good (they had this delicious chicken pâté), and again when the restaurant became Wickson and was run by a couple of Bay Area chefs (forget their names but I believe they were formerly from Chez Panisse). It was so lovely then- we had a wonderful roast chicken dish and several other appetizers that were delightful. We left impressed and eager to come back, even though it's a trek for us (we live in the East Bay). Fast forward to tonight, and we were notified when checking in to our hotel at the Madrones that the chef had changed. Cause for pause, sure, but the menu still looked good so we decided to keep our reservation. Unfortunately, the food was so disappointing! We ordered the baked Brie with mushrooms. Brie came out lukewarm (not melty), and the mushrooms were good but fairly bland. The crostini toasts that came with the Brie were oddly hard- like not crisp and crunchy like a crostini but tough and hard-- like stale croutons. The entrees- the wood-fired roasted chicken (which we had had before at Wickson and was delicious) came out extremely burned- literally the entire skin was inedible because of how charred and bitter it was. The chicken meat itself was moist, but had little flavor without the skin (which had imparted bitterness even on the meat). The broccolini was bland (just tasted steamed or maybe blanched) with some salt and the mashed potatoes were just average. We also ordered the seafood pasta... which for $46 was also wildly disappointing! It was cioppino-inspired but bland, the onions in the soup were undercooked and still crunchy, the pasta wasn't al dente (overcooked/too soft), and it came with like 4 clams. For $46, I was expecting way more protein and mussels than the paltry amount that came with the bland tomato-noodles. Unfortunately, we were way too underwhelmed with all the food at this point to give the dessert a try. Sadly, we will not be returning to Wickson again. Service was average. read more

Wow. What a find. Small place that is part of the Madrones hotel. Not easy to score a reservation, but worth the effort. Limited menu but everything we had was deeply satisfying. Relatively simple preparations, but lots of attention to detail with interesting supporting elements that made each dish shine. Definitely get the bread -- a star in its own right, but also an essential tool for wiping every plate clean. Portions were well balanced -- we ordered three starters and three mains for four people and that was more than enough (save room for dessert!). Chicken was one of the moistest pieces of chicken I have ever had -- they prepare it fresh for each order so is about a 40 min wait, but totally worth it, and they coursed everything else so we were never "waiting." We sat inside, but they have a generous patio that was bustling, even on a relatively cool March night. read more

We had a great meal here. Sat near the kitchen and BSed with the chefs. Waitstaff was fun. Not stuffy nor pretentious. Perhaps not everyone's cup of tea but we certainly liked the service. Feels like 2 stars is being generous for the quality of food and service, should have bought TV dinners for our wedding anniversary dinner instead. Service: non-existent. We literally didn't have a waiter the entire dinner. Never greeted by a waiter, hostess took our entire order, food was delivered, as they brought a check we had to ask if they even had dessert. Paying $200 for a dinner for 2 you'd expect someone to ask how the food was at least one time, guy at the store I bought sandwiches at earlier that day had more personality than this entire staff combined. Food: underwhelming is an understatement. The focaccia was great, after that just bad. The halibut had no seasoning at all, no salt or pepper, not even a splash of lemon and the vegetables were swimming in butter but again no seasoning. The pork was the most inconsistently cooked piece of meat I've ever seen, 2 pieces overcooked and grainy and one random piece medium. The peaches and cream where absolutely awful, the peaches were burnt to a crisp and the whipped cream was obviously made with cream that had turned because it tasted like sour milk then covered in salt. My plans worked out perfectly for a Friday lunch at Wickson! Kelly, server extraordinaire, made the day even better. After ordering, you choose a table in the garden area and Kelly brings your food and wine (you must have wine) to you. You may think you've had good grilled cheese in the past, and maybe you have, but the one at Wickson is my favorite, the standard for all others to meet.
