I have such a love hate relationship with Wiki Wiki. You know that feeling when you shouldn't do something but you do it anyways because it feels good while you're at it? Well that's how I feel about this place. Every single time I think its a great idea to eat here until I realize I should have stopped halfway through my plate and saved it for seconds for another meal. Why is that? The addicting macaroni salad! Actually all their food is pretty good, not just their macaroni salad. I usually get their grilled chicken (teriyaki?). I used to also get the katsu chicken, not anymore. I have plenty of calories without breaded, deep fried chicken strips, tasty? yes, healthy? NO. The plate comes with some white steamed rice, mac salad and an entree. Their plates are actually quite big so maybe sharing with a friend is a good idea or even taking some to go. read more

This place is very very BAD !! I will never come back again! Their Cashier is very mean and ruled, she is about in her later 40's, she served me the food with no forks or chopsticks and when I went to her to ask about the fork, she was too busy to talk to me, so I just sand there to wait for her. about 2 mins later she suddenly turned around and yell at me says,"What you want ? "with her angry face. I told her I have no fork to eat my food, then she realized her bad attitude so she just give me the fork and left. I have no idea why they have such bad service and I do believe I'm not the only one to complain about their bad service. Besides, their food sucks. I had been eyeing this place for a long time because I like Hawaiian food, but never went in because it looked pretty dingy, rarely had many customers inside, and the windows weren't very clean. When I finally went to Wiki Wiki, I ordered the chicken katsu, which seemed to be very popular in Yelp reviews. The guy who took the order was really friendly. Unfortunately, however, the fried chicken was really bitter. I think this might be the result of using very old oil. Got the Chicken Katsu burger which was average. It has lettuce, tomato, and onion. The Katsu itself is nice and crisp but the hamburger lacks flavor. Not bad for $3 though. Also had the kalua pork lunch plate that comes with Mac salad and rice. The pork was pretty good though salty while the mac salad was delicious. This one was around $10. I LOVE Hawaiian takeout!!! Whenever I'm on the west coast I always try to get some chicken katsu or some spam! Mmmmmm SPAM! We had dinner plans but it was a few hours before and we were STARVING. We needed a snack, stat! We ended up at Wiki Wiki (which is the best name ever) for some musubi. Bestie had never had musubi so we ended up getting a spam musubi and a chicken katsu musubi to share. This place is located right on a main street, so parking is a bitch, but it's a cute walk way to go on a date. We both ordered the BBQ chicken plates. Macaroni salad was A++++!! I finished that first. They give you a LOT of chicken and it was soooo good. My friend and I weren't able to finish it, so we put it aside for a couple hours, and finished it later. A very generous portion of chicken, fried to perfection with a side of sweet lemon glaze with just the right amount of tartness. If that weren't enough, Wiki Wiki dishes include a healthy heaping of creamy macaroni salad and sticky rice. And that was for the "mini" portion. You can get a regular size for just a few dollars more. Unfortunately, this place is tucked away in an undesirable neighborhood, as I witness some teens grabbing plastic cups intended for the water (which Wiki Wiki graciously provides for their guests), and they stole pop from the soda fountain. I've only had their musubi but it was pretty awesome. Enough to go back the next day. Got the Chicken Katsu Musubi and then the Spam Musubi. It's a pretty amazing find for Berkeley. Probably can't eat this every day cause the food is pretty heavy and the portions look pretty huge. The "mini" plate is 1 scoop of rice, and 1 scoop of mac salad, and the regular plate is 2 scoops of rice with 1 scoop of mac salad. The price is pretty cheap, and they do offer 2/$3.65 deal on certain items. Now...it is just a "O I haven't had it is forever so lets get some". No real desire for this anymore unless I really want chicken katsu or masubi. They are all the same now. For the prices they had a pretty good portion especially for the college budget. It got a bad rap from the Daily Cal, but I thought it was decent. I only go to this place when I am really desperate to get food and I am too lazy to go anywhere else since I live right around the corner. They have pretty late hours which I like. The chicken katsu comes with A LOT. rice, macaroni salad and the meat was loaded into the plastic box to the max. A regular order can easily be split by two people and both be very full. I sometimes crave spam masubi which you can get from the value menu for like $2 to $2.50 but I've had better tasting ones at Hawaiian bbq in Richmond. The ones here a little dry so I always end up dipping them in teriyaki sauce anyways. Other items on the value menue include a hamburger and french fries. The burger wasnt that bad, just a little boring but what do you expect for $2.50. At least it included veggies too. This is the only hawaiian bbq place that I am aware of in berkeley campus area so its not a bad place to get your hawaiian bbq fix. I go here sometimes when I'm too lazy to head over to Asian Ghetto for some food, and since I live right around the corner from this place, that makes it even better! I always order half chicken katsu and half BBQ chicken, and although they charge extra for that, I'm still quite pleased. The portions are HUGE and fills you up. I don't think this is authentic Hawaiian food, but hey, it's super cheap. If you get a so-called "lunch plate," you can order some type of meat that comes with mac salad and rice. For this option, there are two sizes: mini and regular. A mini includes one scoop each of mac salad and rice, while a regular includes two scoops of each. I went with a mini BBQ Chicken and it filled the whole paper plate for $5.55 for dinner despite the menu calling it a "lunch" plate. Pretty cheap, no? The rice was on the dry, hard side but the chicken was tender and the mac salad...well, I haven't really come across any place that has managed to mess it up. The place is small, but good portions. Surprised they're not busier than ever since the closure of Dot Island in Sather Lane, but doesn't stop hungry college students during deadweek! Right on Channing x Shattuck this spacious place had GREAT food at pretty good prices. They even have a couple Pick-2 deals for cheaper options. The Chicken Katsu was fresher and better tasting than I've ever had at Dot Island, and the portion sizes were incredible (3 stacks of katsu gmfu). I am a fan of anything involving a mish-mash of different tastes and textures and saltiness. I got a so-so noodle soup cause it was cold and rainy and I wanted hot soup. It was merely adequate, so I helped J finish her loco moco. Tasty! Why can't everything be covered in gravy? The chicken-katsu musubi was not that great. Too much panko crusty stuff, not enough chicken and the rice was not seasoned at all. A little dip in Siracha made it slightly interesting, but all in all, not much to hoot and holler about. Having stayed in the Berkeley area for only 3 months while commuting to work in Novato, most of my gastronomical experiences consist mainly of restaurants on Shattuck. Luckly, Wiki Wiki was only a 5 minute walk from my apartments on Parker Ave. I will always have fond memories about this place. It was my go-to place for fast, cheap, good food. Not to mention, this was the place that got me addicted to the spam musubi. Just about everything is good here and pretty authentic too. From the Loco Mocos to their BBQ short ribs. All good stuff and the portion size are very generous too. After having what was the worse Hawaiian BBQ here in my new home in Los Angeles, I've come to miss Wiki Wiki and the Bay Area even more. :( read more

The area is not a destination by any means, where it's near a decent apartment complex, a dollar store, and several other businesses. This place will get most people full, where less than $10 will get you enough for 2 meals, maybe 3 if you do not need to eat that much. Most meal combos come with rice, a scoop of macaroni with mayonnaise, plus your choice of meat. The Mahi Mahi fish combination is great, plus short ribs or any beef dish is nice too. As of the day of this posting, there's another deal where you can have your choice of 2 of the following: hamburger, fries, musubi, or your choice of soda or water for $3.59. I love the wiki wiki saimin and the spam musubi here. Those plus a strawberry lilikoi are my standard order. (They have all/almost all the hawaiian sun drink flavors.) The saimin is savory goodness, topped with some of their bbq and a fried egg. YUM. The spam musubi is great too, they pan fry their spam in some kind of sauce (teriyaki maybe?). It's also the YUM. I have been to many different Hawaiian eateries up and down California and was kind of sketchy about going to this one when we pulled up due to the eatery not looking like your typical Hawaiian food place, but when I ordered the Loco Moco here, OMG! Wow...it was delicious. They, the workers or owners working here, who took our order and the cook were really nice and were smiling all the time. Tables were clean and there were no little bugs flying around the concession area, these are a definite plus, since I have seen this at previous franchise Hawaiian food eateries. Eh, I'm a real big fan of lots of meat and rice. I always get the BBQ Mix Plate, and I love their Teriyaki Chicken. However, their Spam Masubi sucks; the Spam and rice seem to be dried out. It's not the best Hawaiian BBQ, but there aren't many Hawaiian spots in Berkeley, so I'm thankful for this place. The only thing I dislike about this place is the wait. Even when there aren't any customers there, I always end up waiting for about 15 minutes just for a regular plate. Maybe it's time to hire another cook. read more

When I lived on the same block as this place, I came here when I wanted something quick without waiting in line. I usually got either the Chicken Katsu, a Cheeseburger + Fries, or Spam Musubi. All are pretty good for the price :) There's plenty of seating inside, so it's great for groups! Of all the times I've been here (and I've been here pretty much all times of the day), there's never been a big crowd of people. So, I was always worried this place would close down...but so far, so good! You can also place your order over the phone and easily pick it up without waiting for your food. So easy! The people who work there have always been nice to me. One time I forgot to get cash and was under the minimum to use my card, but the cashier kindly let it slide. When it had just opened, I got the chicken katsu, and I've never gotten it since. it was dry and soggy. The wikiwiki saimin is decent, but on the salty side and greasy. The bbq chicken musubi is average. If you're not picky about your Hawaiian food and you want something cheap, this is the place to go to. They have burgers that are only $2 (but they definitely aren't worth any more than $2), and sometimes their fries are crispy and slightly tasty. If you're looking for some gourmet stuff, this is probably the wrong place. That being said, I've been coming here after my workouts for the past four years and this is where you go if you just want large portions of meat. All their plates come with a scoop (or two if you get the regular size) of rice, meats, and mac salad. For most people, I'd say a mini is just right in terms of price and portion size. If you're starving, get the regular size. As for things I'd recommend, if you're a first timer, try the BBQ Mix Plate and/or any one of their musubis. It's a great way to sample the food and decide if you ever want to come back. The chicken katsu is pretty good too, though maybe 1 in every 10 days you can kind of tell the fry oil's been through a lot, haha. In general, stick to things like spam, bbq chicken, or beef teriyaki. Anything along those lines, the quality is consistent and portion sizes are good. Their kalua pork can be dry and tasteless sometimes, so that's a gamble if you're looking to try it. Avoid the fried shrimp; it's breaded poorly and they only provide 4 or 5 per order. All-in-all, the place is great if you want a large, hearty meal. For college students on a budget, there are undoubtedly cheaper options, but wiki-wiki is definitely worth trying at least once. read more

This place is not real hawaiian food..but it gets the job done. I'm from hawaii, and whenever I crave hawaiian bbq I walk here from my job. Whats good is the kalua pig and the spam musubi which I always get. The kalua pig is not dry, and taste just like back at home. Spam musubi is delicious because you can't go wrong with this because its such a simple snack. I hate that if your bill is under $10.00 there is a 0.50 cent charge, beware it can get a bit pricey with the regular lunch plates. It does get busy with berkeley high students at lunch time, because it gets a little rowdy.
