If you're looking for some gourmet stuff, this is probably the wrong place. That being said, I've been coming here after my workouts for the past four years and this is where you go if you just want large portions of meat. All their plates come with a scoop (or two if you get the regular size) of rice, meats, and mac salad. For most people, I'd say a mini is just right in terms of price and portion size. If you're starving, get the regular size. As for things I'd recommend, if you're a first timer, try the BBQ Mix Plate and/or any one of their musubis. It's a great way to sample the food and decide if you ever want to come back. The chicken katsu is pretty good too, though maybe 1 in every 10 days you can kind of tell the fry oil's been through a lot, haha. In general, stick to things like spam, bbq chicken, or beef teriyaki. Anything along those lines, the quality is consistent and portion sizes are good. Their kalua pork can be dry and tasteless sometimes, so that's a gamble if you're looking to try it. Avoid the fried shrimp; it's breaded poorly and they only provide 4 or 5 per order. All-in-all, the place is great if you want a large, hearty meal. For college students on a budget, there are undoubtedly cheaper options, but wiki-wiki is definitely worth trying at least once. read more

when i got my mahi mahi burger from this place, i exclaimed "what a generous helping! how ever am i going to finish all of this?!?!" and i almost did, but unfortunately had a few too many bites of my dining companion's delicious lemon chicken. This place is not real hawaiian food..but it gets the job done. I'm from hawaii, and whenever I crave hawaiian bbq I walk here from my job. Whats good is the kalua pig and the spam musubi which I always get. The kalua pig is not dry, and taste just like back at home. Spam musubi is delicious because you can't go wrong with this because its such a simple snack. I hate that if your bill is under $10.00 there is a 0.50 cent charge, beware it can get a bit pricey with the regular lunch plates. It does get busy with berkeley high students at lunch time, because it gets a little rowdy. Does not taste very authentic. I ordered a combo plate of BBQ chicken and kalua pork. The mac salad tastes funky. I had a few bites and couldn't finish it. The bbq chicken had a weird texture as if it were dried out prior to being cooked, flavorwise it did not have that savory umami flavor the way shoyu or bbq chicken should have. So, admittedly I haven't had Hawaiian food that I was super crazy about in the Bay Area yet. I had a teriyaki bowl, figuring on playing it safe while getting a good amount of grub after a long morning. I sat down around lunch time and there was plenty of seating. The waitress was nice but she was distracted with her cell phone that kept getting messages while I was asking questions about the menu. The teriyaki bowl was a bit disappointing because the chicken was so fatty. I'm not used to having fatty chicken in my teriyaki so I ended up mostly eating the rice and veggies and picking around the chicken which was a bummer since I really was in the mood for good chicken teriyaki. With so many casual dining options in downtown Berkeley, it's easy to miss a storefront as austere and unassuming as Wiki WIki's. Even after passing it daily living nearby, I still didn't notice Wiki Wiki. Once I did, I found myself in the grips of an illogical fixation fueled by adoration at their cute, stout anthropomorphized pineapple logo and bemusement at the aurally pleasing term "wiki wiki." Not being a red-meat eater, I knew my options would be limited here. I went for the Wiki Wiki Saimin, the Hawaiian equivalent of chicken noodle soup. While the menu says that it comes with egg and BBQ chicken, I was taken aback that it actually came with a fried egg sunny side up, right on top of the soup! Slight prodding led to the trippy, and disgusting, sight of runny yolk streaming through the broth. But it actually tasted quite good! And by good I mean sinful, as the Saimin was incredibly salty and pretty fatty. I'm sure the combo of chicken, egg, and Spam (which I didn't have) in a generous bowl of noodles and both makes for awesome hangover food. But it's not for the health-conscious. As others have noted, patronage at Wiki Wiki appears to be light at any given time. This is one of those places that does not have any pretenses about innovation or marketing towards mass accessibility. You simply have to be on a mission to get your fill of rich meaty meat, island style. With such goals, and a lack of fussiness over nutritional value, I'm sure the proprietors will welcome you with open arms. read more

Had two spam masubis and a crispy shrimp burger. They were both very tasty and affordable! Definitely a filling dinner without being stuffed. My roommates have had the chicken katsu and that was tasty as well. Very solid macaroni salad! Yum! The owners of the place were so cute- one can obviously see that they're trying their best. They gave me lots of smiles but didn't talk very much and that's totally fine IMO. I think the key to enjoying any experience is to be relaxed and not have such high expectations. Sometimes you just gotta go with the flow. You can't expect anyone to be nice to you if you're not willing to extend the hand first. I just got a haircut next door from Hair Clips, and figured I'd give this little fast food restaurant a try (well, and especially since I parked my car smack dab right in front of it! :P ) I had the BBQ chicken. They have two sizes on everything - mini and regular (for like $1.50 more, for more meat and an extra scoop of white rice). I thought mini might be too small so I just ordered the regular. $5.75 + tax. When I got my food though, I thought, "wow, these be college-size portions!" Though, it came out looking more like teriyaki chicken, without your typical American bbq sauce. The scoop of macaroni salad was nice and creamy, and fresh-tasting. But I especially liked the sliced raw cabbage coating the bottom of the plate, on which they laid the chicken. Nice touch. All in all, it was a lot of food... I ate half at the restaurant, then took it home and then nibbled on it for the rest of the night. Scenario: Walking around looking for something 'different'. Product: The crab macaroni salad is a refreshing twist on an otherwise typically bland side. The BBQ pork is good, but not great. They have a wide variety of Hawaiian Sun drinks, of which I enjoyed the Mango Orange. The sausage musubi was a cool twist from the normal spam or chicken. One item I didn't like: the lau lau (pork with butterfish wrapped in leaves) was not enjoyable. To me, it was hard to distinguish the spinach-like innards from the leaf wrapping. The butterfish looked, felt, and tasted like hunks of fat. Prices are decent, but I think the Hawaiian Sun's are over-priced. Service: They stood at the other end of the counter, staring at us, while we were waiting to order for a couple minutes. They also don't announce the food very loud. Luckily the lady friend was starving and therefore paying close attention to what was coming out. Atmosphere: Hawaiian "fast food". Imaging a cheap, local-run burger joint but with katsu and lau lau and a few other 'hawaiian' things. It's on Shattuck but kind of down at the end, so foot traffic is a little lighter and parking is a tad easier to find. I have been coming to Wikiwiki since I came to Berkeley. I first must admit that I do love Hawaiian BBQ. I order the BBq mixed plate which comes with a hearty serving of BBQ beef, 2 beef short ribs, 2 boneless chicken teriyaki pieces, macaroni salad, and a scoop of rice. The BBQ Mix plate is filling, inexpensive and could be 2 meals. I also enjoy the Moco-Loco, which is a traditional Hawaiian favorite form of comfort food. It comes with 2 beef patties topped with gravy and an over-easy egg. Caution: don't eat this meal very often, because it may lead to congestive heart failure, but it is delicious. The spam musubi is also not for the faint of heart. I know, its spam... But I have to say that I am in that small population of people that love spam. The spam-musubi comes wrapped in nori, stuffed with white rice, tonkatsu sauce, and a slice of spam. To many is sounds gross, but for those that enjoy a salty piece of spam, it is pure spammy bliss. This scenario describes my experience with Wiki Wiki. I love Hawaiian BBQ, and since I've moved to the East Bay from Los Angeles I haven't had the opportunity to indulge my desires. I pass Wiki Wiki all the time, and so I'd been meaning to try it. I try not to eat out too much, but I had previous in the week gone to eat out a couple of separate times, so the night I decided to try Wiki Wiki I was already semi-wary of my decision. Then imagine my extreme disappointment when I learned that Wiki Wiki is just not very good. I love Loco Moco, but every time I Yelp Hawaiian restaurants I see a lot of people mention Kalua Pork, so I decided to order that. I'm sure good Kalua Pork is worth writing home about; this was meh. I needed to add a good amount of sriracha and teriyaki sauce to achieve a taste I was suitably happy with. My girlfriend ordered the short ribs which weren't bad, but I've had better. I'd seen people mention on Yelp that the macaroni salad here was super mayo time, and they weren't kidding. Their macaroni salad is a mayo bomb. If you like a healthy dose of textured mayo then this might be just for you. If I hadn't already been wary about eating out the night I tried Wiki Wiki I might be a little more forgiving, but since I was this was super disappointing. This is one of my many go-to's in Berkeley. The place is spacious enough and I the food is USUALLY (see note) delicious. I think the one thing that stands out about Wiki Wiki are their portions. Their regular-sized dishes should be enough for two people. I get the Katsu, Kalua pork, or the Seafood combination regularly and I'm definitely filled up before finishing. Note: The reason for four stars rather than five stars is that I feel Wiki Wiki may not always be consistent with their quality. Don't get me wrong, when the food's good, the food is good. But, and it's happened more than once or twice, the Katsu's been really thin or the shrimp/fish has more breading than fish. Still, definitely try it out for some delicious food! read more

Went there last night and ordered to go, a Ricebowl with steam vegetables, fried breaded chicken which I believe is called katsu? When I got home, I could see they did not give me what I ordered, and the cook hid everything under the cabbage leaves. There was bbq chicken cooked at various levels and obviously not all cooked same time. Today I took the food back for a refund and they said they could not do so because that cook who prepped the food was not there. Nor would they replace the order and that the person would not be back for two days. I guess I will be back with their moldy food. read more
