You can tell a lot about a shop by how they handle a bad situation. Wild Birds is upscale and unscrupulous. Here's what happened to me, a customer of fifteen years., after an inattentive WB clerk accidentally slammed into me, knocking me off my feet and face-first onto the floor, where I was badly bruised and with lacerations and a concussion. Returning the next day to ask, "what happened," I spoke to the clerk who injured me. She entirely acknowledged her fault and apologized. Shortly after, she disappeared. I assume Owner Bob Ross and wife didn't kill her, but they might have fired her--not because she hurt me, but because she admitted it. Then Bob Ross told me, irritably, not to come back and talk about the accident to staff. Thus I, a loyal customer of 15 years, became a trouble-maker. That's the ugly trick life plays on you (with some help from the Bob Rosses of the world), i.e., you become a trouble maker because you are a trouble to them after you get injured in their store. With the clerk gone, WB's insurer, Cincinnati Insurance, tried to construct a new narrative about the accident so that they could part with as little money for a large injury as possible. Everyone smiles at the cash register, but watch out for their true nature to emerge in times of trouble. That is one nasty owner. So, get your bird seeds just as fresh and a lot cheaper at Farm and Fleet, hardware stores, or garden suppliers. read more

We are used to shopping at a Wild Birds, Unlimited in Green Bay, Wi, so unfortunately for the Madison store, we have them to compare to. The store in Green Bay is much smaller, but also more customer service forward. What I mean by that is when you walk in the door, you are greeted immediately by their staff. Super friendly and helpful! The Madison store is pretty friendly, but you have to seek them out generally to get help. But even more importantly, the Green Bay store hours are much more customer - friendly! I mean, with this type of store... Why would you not be open on a Sunday? Also, they close super early at the Madison store, where Green Bay's hours are more friendly for working folks. We have gone so far as to order our birdseed from Green Bay and utilize free shipping as opposed to driving over to the west side. read more

A good selection of quality feeders. I purchased a squirrel resistant tube feeder about ten years ago that's still going strong. I'm not very impressed by the seed mixes. Most contain millet, which attracts invasive European House Sparrows. Please don't feed millet, folks; it contributes to the decline of native bird species. The fruit and nut mix has many good ingredients, although some nuts are very large (get stuck in some feeders), and the size might attract squirrels. The mess free mix has a lot of contaminants -- sunflower in the hull and some millet. No big deal, but manufacturing/packaging standards look a little low. Last time I was in the store, the person who helped me seemed to be a little lacking on knowledge on the seed mixes -- they had to read labels to answer simple questions. Again, no big deal, but seems a little odd. read more

So great to find the perfect place to buy a new bird feeder and seed from the Guys Who Know. I needed something that I could hang off the side of my Chicago 6th floor juliet balcony, that would attract wild birds, and hopefully not just bring in the hoards of sparrows and pigeons that my current setup had. They guided me to a seed mix that far more appealing to cardinals and chickadees, a feeder that is set up with perches that are better for finches, and a suet block that already has had a downy woodpecker in attendance. All employees are very knowledgeable and can help you with which feed to get to attract specific birds, as as well as correct feeders etc. We purchased one of the squirrel proof feeder systems and are now squirrel free as well as attracting a large variety of birds due to the multiple feeding stations on it. Really well stocked with all kinds of feeders & seed types plus knowledgeable staff to help you match them to the type of birds you hope to attract. I was also happy with the improvements to their feeders to make them last longer & be easier to keep clean. Plenty of pretty decor as well for your home and yard. I just had a had a very bad experience here. I bought a cylinder feeder for $16.99 and a hanger for $10.00ish. Bought it two weeks ago in March. The feeder completely fell apart in the rain. I went to the store to tell them and they said it should not be out in the rain. When I explained that the salesperson did not tell me that and that it is March...it Rains...they should have told me that. I asked for a discount on a new one or a replacement of a suet feeder instead (That can withstand rain) they refused and said they could give me a 10% discount....$1.60!!!! I will no longer shop there. too bad, I spent a LOT of money in that store...BAD customer service. read more

We took my nearly 89 year old mother-in-law (who uses a walker) there to buy a bird feeder. While she and my husband were helped by a friendly sales person, I browsed. However, once I finished browsing and was waiting for my family, there was no place to sit to wait, so I wandered the store, which seemed to arouse suspicion with the owner, who kept sending staff to see if I needed help (or so it seemed.) After my mother-in-law had her items rung up to the tune of nearly $200.00, some set up was needed on her feeder which we were informed we had to wait for the owner, Bob, to do. That was fine, but it took a while and there was no place for my mother-in-law to sit down to wait! I even asked for a chair, and my request seemed to induce some anxiety in the employee I spoke to ... and no chair was forthcoming! Don't get me wrong -- the employee tried, but I feel like she met resistance. What the heck? The temperature outside was pushing 90F, so sitting in the car wasn't an option either. C'mon, Wild Birds! I really prefer to shop at locally owned businesses, but was pretty unimpressed with the [lack of] accessibility of the store, and had the distinct impression that the owners micromanage their staff in an unpleasant way. Also -- they need to reconsider their choice to carry Vortex Optics (and only Vortex Optics,) since Vortex states on their website that they are a proud supporter of the NRA! read more

In addition to having wide variety of seed, nuts, and suet to customized to attract a particular set of birds, they also carry a stellar assortment of bird houses and bird watching equipment. The staff are a wonderful to talk to and very knowledgeable. While their products can be a bit pricey when not on sale, the quality of the in-store experience justifies the extra expense. read more

Wild Birds is simply delightful. Not only do they have a wide array of seed, nuts, and suet to attract a fantastic array of birds, but also bird houses (and associated apparati), yard decorations, and gifts. The staff are very knowledgeable, a pleasure to talk to, and have never allowed me to carry a heavy bag of seed to my car. The store often has a live feed from a raptor's nest, which sometimes attracts a small crowd of oooh-ing, ahhhh-ing gawkers. It's relatively pricey, as noted by previous reviewers, but it's worth it for the expertise and the overall experience. read more

Here is a store that is a gem and not well known. There staff sports experts in all areas dealing with nature, and especially birds and birding. They back their products often with lifetime guarantees and I enjoy their monthly seminars. Frequent visits pay off with their customer club that makes their seed and products cheaper than anyone.
