Basa Seafood Express is a no frills spot that took over Dell's Cafe on Castro Valley Blvd. Offering poke, sashimi, rolls, some fried items and clam chowder. Order at the counter and a buzzer given to alert you when ready. I happened to order online and the estimate was about 30 mins but got there in 15 mins and waited. Be sure check in at the counter as your order may be ready sooner than estimated. :: SOFT-SHELLED CRAB BURGER - coated in panko and fried. Light (not greasy) crunchy crab with simple mayo, slices of red onion, tomato and spring mix on a sesame bun! 4/5 stars - I made a garlic/lemon aioli to add to my sandwich and yum! :: CLAM CHOWDER - thicker than ones I've had, tad sweet and can taste the cream. Clams present with chunks of potatoes. This was decent 3.25/5 Service pleasant and no nonsense. I'd return for the soft-shelled crab burger and clam chowder and make small mods at home. 4 tables for dine-in but most orders were for take out. Private lot parking.

One thing I did not appreciate is that they asked me to write a Yelp review BEFORE I even ordered in exchange for 10% off! I told them no.

As for the…read morefamily house of fish and poultry, I applaud its longevity and its status as a staple of their community. First, I must acknowledge my bias because I'm from New Orleans, and Catholic, and went to many of the fish frys, so when I'm describing their fish, please understand I'm comparing you to decades of eating fried fish from New Orleans. I found their portions to be smaller than I am used to, and the fish's breading was bland. I tend to like my fish more seasoned and with much more cornmeal than flour in the breading. The fillets were rather small. I got the six-piece. I was expecting a fillet of fish, which is usually 8 to 10 inches, but these were more like what I would call in New Orleans, fish nuggets. The potato salad was OK, and the lemon cake was more like a buffet muffin than a slice of cake, which is what I was expecting. I thought the product was adequate, but if you have ever been to Oliver's Fishhouse in Antioch, I would ask you to make your own comparison.

The vibe is awesome, they have a great bar area with a couple of TVs playing sports, and the music was definitely bumping. The staff was incredibly nice and super attentive to our table the entire night. Food-wise, this spot doesn't miss a beat. One of the best surprises was that they offer fresh crawfish, which is pretty rare to find at most seafood boil places. Everything we ordered was packed with flavor, and the garlic fries were amazingly good. Honestly, this boil spot isn't lacking a single thing. Whatever they are doing, they need to keep it up! This has easily jumped to the top of my list as one of my absolute favorite seafood boil spots.

I was looking forward to trying Backyard Bayou, but unfortunately my experience never made it past…read morethe waiting area. My party arrived around 6:38 PM and added our name to the waitlist for dinner. While waiting, it became increasingly clear that more than half of the dining room had already finished their meals. Many tables appeared to be staying simply to watch the soccer match on the TVs. I completely understand wanting to enjoy the game, but at the same time there were 4-5 parties waiting for tables, with groups of various sizes. This raises an important question: at what point does management step in to balance hospitality with serving waiting guests? While no one should be rushed through their meal, when tables have clearly finished dining and a long wait is building, there should be some effort to manage table turnover during peak dinner hours. After waiting about 45 minutes with no indication that seating would happen anytime soon, we decided to leave and eat elsewhere. Ironically, we didn't receive the text that our table was ready until 8:07 PM--nearly an hour and a half after we first checked in. The food may be great, but based on this experience, the waitlist management left a lot to be desired. I hope Backyard Bayou reviews how they handle busy nights and finds a better balance between accommodating guests who want to linger and serving the many customers waiting to dine.
