The view as the sun sets.

We stayed at the Treebones Resort (where wild coast is located) and got the 5pm seating. Omakase (pre-set small plates of hyper fresh fish and Japanese flavors). Stellar. Amazing. Stunning freshness. We also got the sale pairing. Wonderful. The views, the ambiance, and the welcoming chef team made it a fantastic experience. Can't wait to return.

This place was worth every cent! The fish service and vibe is top quality. My wife and I just got the tasting and ordered a few drinks to go along with our experience. I would definitely do the drink pairing if I could go back. Chef was on point with everything. The fish melted in my mouth and their were flavor bombs with every bite! Highly recommended!

I basically died and went to my version of heaven: Treebones Resort and Wild Coast Sushi. Chef Yancy and DJ were both Godly in their creations. Treebones was incredible but Wild Coast Sushi took the entire experience up another notch. I booked the 5 o'clock seating for last Saturday and hindsight is 20/20... I wish I booked 5 o'clock AND 7 o'clock because I did *NOT* want to leave. My good friend and I opted for the beverage pairing and every bite was subsequently paired with the perfect sip whether it was sake, champagne, or tea, everything matched accordingly. On Saturday, April 23rd, 2022, Chef Yancy prepared an egg custard topped with sea urchin to start us off. The second dish was a scallop and oyster combo topped with chutney and edible flowers. It was this dish that introduced me to REAL wasabi. Full disclosure: I never knew what I was missing and now that I do, I will never go back to 'imposter' wasabi. The real freshly-grated wasabi was bright and green with just a touch of heat. Unlike the overpowering fake wasabi traditionally served, this was delicate enough to let the flavor of each fish shine. Our third dish was a lightly grilled fish served over a small bed of rice. Subsequent courses featured nigiri style sushi; the freshest fish over rice. Salmon and several types of tuna including toro were highlights for me. A unique take on a miso soup came next. A sushi handroll with three types of tuna followed and was yet another favorite course. The finale was a two parter featuring dessert, but not just any dessert. Cake as part of an Omakase sushi menu? I expected innovation here and Chef Yancy did not disappoint. He prepared a fish cake drizzled with delectably sweet honey. The last dish was a thin custard with strawberries. By that time I was fully satisfied by each of the previous dishes and beverage pairings. Seriously the worst part about this experience was the fact I couldn't have more. I have thought about Treebones and Wild Coast more times than I can count over the past week. I'm already looking at my calendar to see when I can return to the beautiful, serene atmosphere. Thank you Yancy and DJ! I'll be back!

Aaaah the tea.... beautiful toasty flavor.

This place is magical, Chef Yancy and DJ are both wizards and we were lucky ducks being able to sit at their sushi bar at the Treebones Resort. The bar only seats 8 people which is really wonderful and intimate - we ended up having chats with everyone in there. The sake pairing is a must - the variety of sakes that we were able to try was just mind-blowing and DJ gave such wonderful explanations about each one. Each bite of food/sushi was heavenly. From what I understand they are constantly changing the menu depending on what is fresh, and you can taste the freshness and the care and thought they have put into each bite. This is such a special experience - one that is worth planning and traveling for.

Wild Coast offers a lovely experience for guests with resort reservations and visitors. It's a great stop along Highway 1 to grab a bite or enjoy when you're staying at the resort. I enjoyed the passion and expertise for both sides of the restaurant. Wild Coast takes walk-in while the Sushi Bar requires reservations. The staff are so passionate and committed to the best ingredients. The Main Restaurant is open nightly 5:00pm - 8:30pm with lunch served 12:00pm - 2:00pm. I had a pizza to go and enjoyed it at my campsite under the moonlight. Another night, I had the 16-course sushi course. The Wild Coast Sushi Bar offers three seatings Wed-Sun at 4:30pm, 6:00pm and 7:30pm. There were 3 couples total at the open air bar. It's a small space with an open kitchen. Everything is prepared in front of you and served right away. I have to admit, I got a pizza after the sushi dinner. The food was amazing but portions were on the small side. Perhaps, my eyes are bigger than my belly, but the pizza managed to disappear.

This is a case of long term planning that manifested perfectly. When I found out about the Human Nest at Treebones Resort a few years ago, I was intrigued. And when I found out they also served omakase on the grounds, I just knew I had to have this experience. So I booked the nest with a 7:00 PM Saturday omakase seating a year ago and finally the day came to trek down to Big Sur. I'll speak to the nest in a separate post, but with regards to omakase, this was definitely a unique experience. Not only because it's part of a super luxe glamping resort, but also because all the food is Japanese-inspired but very little is Japanese-sourced. That is, we learned through the night of how much of the food came to our plates, and the real Japanese wasabi for example was grown hydroponically within California. As far as the omakase course went, it was 16 small chef-prepared small bites with a few optional add-ons. I posted the menu and shots of each bite with this review so you can see for yourself how lovely and delicious each morsel was. The fish was incredibly fresh, and each nigiri came with a dab of real wasabi root which was finely grated in front of our very eyes, and had none of the sharp sting to the nostrils that a typical Japanese restaurant's wasabi paste from a tube might present. Many of the bites came garnished with edible flowers, and also were made with ingredients from the onsite organic garden (e.g., the first course of little tomatoes with mint leaves drizzled in honey made on the grounds). The add-ons I mentioned earlier included wagyu bites and an exquisite little bowl of indulgent uni layered on sushi rice. The sushi chefs were very friendly, giving us all equal attention while still keeping the food experience top notch. Eating omakase at an intimate seating while watching the sun sink into the vast blue sea and a sliver of moon revealing itself at sunset, is a beautiful experience that will keep me warm for years to come.

With COVID-19 not giving me the option to travel internationally for 2020 I instead went on a road trip exploring CA's Central Coast via 1/101. During this road trip I fell in love with Treebones Resort. It's one of the most unique places I ever stayed at and the stay itself is one of my favorite travel experiences, but it also helps that the hotel restaurant and omakase sushi is also one of my favorite traveling eating experiences. When I stayed at Treebones COVID-19 and the Dolan Fire greatly limited my dining options. The fine dining options at Sierra Mar and the Sur House were not an option because COVID-19 restricted the restaurants to hotel guests, which I refused to pay over $1K for a night. The more affordable options such as Nepenthe or Big Sur Roadhouse were inaccessible because Treebones was at the southern end of the CA-1 closure due to the fire. Therefore the best dining options were at the hotel and while the hotel's restaurant and omakase sushi were technically open to the public the hotel gives preference to their guests. Even in a COVID-19-free world seats at the sushi bar are hard to come by if you're not staying at the hotel - the option to reserve seats for the sushi bar are first given as you book your yurt/campsite. *** LOGISTICS Restaurant: Lunch 12-2pm, Dinner 5:30-8:30pm, reservations recommednded. Omakase Sushi Bar: Weds-Sunday 3 seatings nightly: 4:30, 6:00 and 7:30pm. 16 courses, $100/person, $80/beverage pairing. Maximum 6 people. The sushi bar is also separate from the hotel restaurant. Non-hotel guests have an opportunity to request seats a week in advance. *** ~Restaurant~ COVID-19 restrictions only allowed outdoor seating, but as long as I was layered up with a glass of wine I wouldn't have minded because the view beats Nepenthe's for the "best ocean view" in Big Sur. If you get cold easily there are heat lamps stationed every other seat at the front and towards the back heat lamps are situated up top every table. Entrees - Halibut (fingerling potatoes, summer succotash, red bell pepper coulis, arugula salad, $42). Paired with a Pinot Noir from Joyce Vineyards ($15) - Chocolate souffle (berry sauce, whipped, cream, $12). Paired with a Late Harvest Zinfandel Tobin James 2009 ($10) Halibut was cooked to perfection and the accompanying sauce and veggies kept it light. Vegetables are sourced from the hotel's own garden, which falls in line with the resort's sustainability practices. The Pinot Noir was okay but maybe I'm not so much into pinots from Monterey County. ~Sushi Bar~ Omakase Sushi menu: (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=xu6iJRdPXfg2gr-e8nDrQQ&userid=7gNtYzygF7dB8e7k1mWdjA) The main chef is Yancy, a SD expat (Wrench and Rodent). DJ is his sous chef. Apparently the owners of Treebones loved Yancy so much that they asked him to come to Big Sur and serve sushi to their guests. When I think of the "omakase" experience, Wild Coast will be my gold standard. Chef Yancy and Sous Chef DJ are an excellent team as they were observant with all their customers while keeping each course flowing smoothly. The fact that everyone talked to each other over the course of the dinner also made the entire experience magical. Because I was at the last seating the restaurant got colder with no nearby heat lamps but I also had a scarf that doubled as a blanket for that purpose. The first five courses were beautifully contained within a wicker plate served as a kaiseki (different cooking styles). The next seven sushi were assembled in front of us and presented in front of the counter. The final four were the closing dishes and consisted of the most beautifully decorated tuna maki I've ever seen, a dungeness crab hand roll and 2 desserts. Even though sushi was served from the counter I had no qualms eating from there due to the enhanced cleaning precautions. I had no favorite as everything was delicious in their own way and the strength of the menu ensured a well-rounded dinner. Chef Yancy did an excellet job preparing the sushi and the I could taste the quality of the fish - reminded me of eating sushi in Japan. Akami is not even one of my favorite cuts and the quality was just as a good as a chutoro. I took the time for each course savoring every bite. Drinks were good but my favorite ended up being the roasted buckwheat tea. DJ made an entire pot for me to enjoy back at my treehouse in addition to getting a golf cart chauffeur so I can make it with my tea in one piece. Even with COVID-19 forcing me to significantly alter my travel plans I found a silver lining eating sushi. It evoked similar happy culinary moments from my other travels in Europe and Japan. Upon the completion of experiencing this magical moment I changed my Treebones reservation so that I could eat here on my birthday just in case travel restrictions won't allow me to fly mid-2021. ご馳走さま でした, Yancy-sensei and DJ-sensei. Keep up the good work.

After reading all the reviews, I knew this was going to be a must-eat at a sushi bar, and I was not disappointed. In fact, this may have been the best meal I have ever eaten. Attending during CV19, the bar is essentially at half capacity, with plenty of space between guests. The sushi chef and sous chef were truly a delight. Friendly, educational, and eager to feed you something special. If you ever get your chance at eating here, 110% go with the omakase option. Don't think, just do it. If you are feeling adventurous, go for the sake/beer pairing, but be warned, you will be feeling the juice by the end of the meal. I look forward to returning one day to experience this again and wish anyone else the best meal ever!

Wow. No words. Chef Yancy and DJ are the best. If you're looking for an intimate omakase experience this is a great one. The fish is sourced and caught locally, daily. Which means the menu can change daily. It was so cool to see and hear about all the different types of fish. We shared a drink pairing and the sakes were excellent. We definitely left the dinner feeling a healthy buzz! Great conversation with the chefs and other diners. My favorite was the three different cuts of tuna - the fattiest one melts in your mouth. Omg. The music was great too lending to the ambiance. And the views. Spectacular. Can't beat looking out at the ocean and a gorgeous sunset too. Hope to be back!

The food is exquisite here. We made reservations for 7:45pm on Tuesday evening. We ordered: 1) bone in ribeye with seasonal vegetables & mash potatoes: had the perfect sear, it was phenomenal 2) lobster & prawn pasta with asparagus: cheese , huge prawns, decadent, just perfect 3) grilled octopus with citrus salad $22: tastes great, refreshing 4) late harvest zinfandel, desert wine: fabulous sweetness 5) bowl of soup - kale, leek soup - just OK 5) bread served was good too! Sunset views while seated inside, we were blessed to stay at Treebones and to dine here at night! We want to come back for their sushi night in the future!

Honestly, the food here isn't 5 stars but because of my experience here, I'd give this place a 5! My boyfriend and I visited Big Sur for the weekend and we had no idea where to get food around there. It seemed like there were no restaurants nearby so we stumbled upon this place. First of all, the VIEW. We sat outside during sunset and it was perfect... we enjoyed our hot bowl of clam chowder while watching this beautiful view, it really couldn't get better than this. It got cold and windy really fast so the waitress was kind enough to set up a table for us inside! The service here is spectacular and really made us feel welcomed. We even came here the next morning because they offer free WiFi. We wish we could've tried their omakase though but you have to book that in advance! Definitely a gem in Big Sur :)

Yurt, sweet yurt. Jamie W. and I really enjoyed our brief stay at Treebones (review: http://bit.ly/1EpCRN7), and we managed to eat at their sushi bar for dinner on both evenings we were there. I felt like that dining experience was discretely separate from the main restaurant, so I reviewed it in its own listing (review: bit.ly/1wtm7jv). That means what's left to review is the Wild Coast where we had breakfast and lunch. This is the dining room you walk into when you enter the front door of the main building. I did manage a peek at their dinner menu (photo: http://bit.ly/1EOMaDG) and was frankly startled at the exorbitant prices for the entrees. Venison chops in a blackberry reduction were $42. Was the deer raised on organic alfalfa or something? A filet mignon was $36. Oy. Given that guests would have to drive for quite a while on Hwy 1 in the dark to find another option, it would appear they are held captive by these expensive choices. On the other side, breakfast was complimentary, and while it mostly consisted of cereals and pastries, the one ringer was the self-service waffle which I have to admit was quite delicious (photo: http://bit.ly/15HRqwI). I'm not sure what exactly was in the batter, but it was definitely a grade above the gluey globs served up at a Best Western buffet spread. Lunch was a simple menu of a daily special soup, a couple of salads and a selection of burgers and sandwiches (photo: http://bit.ly/1Cg3Bip). I ordered an $8 bowl of the soup, a Butternut Squash and Carrot combination, which was perfectly decent (photo: http://bit.ly/1BwKXjl). I also had the $14 Roasted Veggie Sandwich which had a bit of a Middle Eastern flair with yellow squash, zucchini, mushrooms, eggplant, tomatoes and greens enfolded into a thick garlic naan and spread with a Siracha aioli (photo: http://bit.ly/15NDqBk). Presumably all the produce came from the organic garden on the grounds, so it was quite fresh tasting. Jamie had the $16 Tuna Melt which added tomato, cucumber, red onion, pepper jack and greens in thickly sliced wheat toast (photo: http://bit.ly/1zwFw6D). Both of us received veggie chips as part of our baskets, and while satisfying for a leisurely school-type lunch, it was all a bit underwhelming for the surroundings and the second mortgage we had to take out. I'm not sure what choice we really had. FOOD - 3 stars...unlike other aspects of Treebones, it's the expense that lingers the most in the memory...except for the complimentary waffle, of course AMBIANCE - 4 stars...by contrast, the interior is casual and comfy SERVICE - 3.5 stars...it looks like everybody at Treebones has multiple jobs (our masseuse was our waitress!) TOTAL - 3 stars...a captive audience will pay what they need to for food

What an amazing experience! One of the best sushi tasting we've had in a long time. Chef Yancy and DJ were great hosts. It was entertaining to watch them prepare the food. If you are staying at Treebones, definitely book a spot here.

We all looked at each other but agreed as we didn't mind enjoying the view while we waited. She set down a clip board that looked like a waiting list so my sister took it to write our names. She then rudely grabs it from her and says "that's not how it works! Just tell me your name!" She was obviously overwhelmed and not enjoying her job but we just brushed it off. The views are absolutely breathtaking, the restaurant is spotless, and even the restrooms were immaculate. You can tell they take pride in every detail. The service was exceptional. My son is a very picky eater and pretty much only eats salmon and Wendy's nuggets. Even though salmon wasn't on the menu, the staff went above and beyond to make it happen for him, seasoned simply with salt and pepper and cooked extra well done. He loved every bite. That level of customer service is hard to find. The food was outstanding, the staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating, and the general manager was genuinely kind. They were even hosting a private event, yet still found a way to make room for us and made us feel completely welcome instead of rushed. This unexpected side quest ended up being one of the highlights of our drive along the coast. Amazing food, incredible service, unforgettable ocean views, and a team that truly cares about its guests. I would absolutely recommend Sur House to anyone in the area, and I'll definitely be back the next time I'm driving through.

We got lucky and seated at the terrace on this misty weekday evening. There's a NY strip off menu which was perfect. It had chimichurri, trumpet mushrooms, whole grilled onions, and mushroom sauce. My husband doesn't even like mushrooms but he enjoyed this entree. The halibut was so delicious. The flavors and texture was everything. High quality fresh ingredients. The citrus butte black was incredible. Even the guy seated at another table behind me said that he was doing everything not to lick the plate. I assume he was talking about this dish. Lol. The view was good but foggy, the food was great, although I would have loved if the restaurant provided something special or any little thing to make it memorable for celebrating our milestone here.

Between the amazing people who have become friends over the years to great home cooked meals and atmosphere (the ocean is practically across the road), I cannot get enough of this place! This trip I took a longtime friend with me and although it's been two days since we were there, she's still saying how impressed she was. She was absolutely floored that they use real butter and the portions were huge. In fact the portions were so big that I couldn't even finish half of my food! And I was HUNGRY! LOL Maura and her brother (which I apologize I can't remember his name) both helped us. Maura sat us and we spoke for a quick minute, and her amazing brother served us. I can't believe it don't recall his name! But everyone there is AWESOME! I was tempted to get the super fresh salad, but decided instead on the clam chowder (as did Alicia), and the salmon was perfectly cooked. The veggies were so fresh and flavorful and the rice was exceptionally fluffy and seasoned perfectly. Not to mention the garlic toast was next level. I can't wait to get back over there! Their blueberry pancakes are calling my name! Trust me, if you want a good old fashioned stick to your bones diner, this place right here checks all the boxes! Plus it's pet friendly, if you choose to sit on the patio!

And the beautiful interior giving cabin vibes plus a warm cozy fireplace. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating and clean restrooms. Loved sitting by the big windows looking at the trees. FYI When dining in you have to grab your own utensils and water and condiments. Their breakfast was delicious. I got the veggie scramble with avocado. And an oat latte. It was strong.
