This place feels like it should be really good. It's cozy, the menu is small, and it has a decent reputation if you ask around. However, I think the 3.5 star average on Yelp is about right. The food is just OK and it doesn't capitalize enough on it's small, hole-in-the-wall vibe. I got the fish tacos and they were good, but not amazing. They were actually pretty tasty, but mostly in the way that fried fish and a decent Mexican slaw is delicious rather than anything particularly exciting or new. My wife got the the seared tuna salad and it was really only OK. The tuna was tough despite looking as though it had only been seared and the greens and dressing were nothing to write home about. In the end, there wasn't anything bad per se, but just nothing to hugely recommend it either. read more

I'll say this- I like the neighborhood vibe at Wild Tomato. It's a bit tiny in winter when there's no outdoor tables, but it's more cozy than crowded. The "famous" fish tacos are good (but not great) and while some of the fancier pizzas looked pretty good, the basic margherita was fairly awful. Great neighborhood restaurant. My big fear is it gets done in by its success since there's nowhere between Glen Echo and Potomac worth going to for a sit down meal. I went there with a friend for my birthday. It was very pleasent. Service was great, attentive but not hovering. We had the Pumpkin soup (excellent and worth the drive back to have again), and myfriends chicken club was huge, and impressive. My Calzone was OK ust not too exciting, with the bread being very good. I would go back and try something different. All the meals though coming out of the kitchen looked good. Price was a little high until you saw the Giant size of the portions. I'll be eating Calzone for at least 1 more meal and the club sandwich could be shared between 2 easil. After a trek at Great Falls there is nothing like fresh food in a clean, relaxed setting. We stopped by this place, which is located along a few other small restaurants too. We were immediately greeted and seated by a friendly server. This small place has something for everyone! The menu has a good variety of salads, burgers, pizzas and regular entrees - and after we placed our order the food came out in good time. I had a Greek salad and my husband had the small Caesar and the chicken wings. The food was fresh - which is essential for salads - and the portions were just the right size for a hungry duo! disclaimer: I'm a pizza snob who rarely goes to run-of-the-mill pizzerias. The place is a self-styled "local joint," so maybe I'm expecting something I shouldn't. I found the pizza to be mediocre at best. The crust was fine: light, chewy, a bit of sweetness, though overcooked and dry at the outer edges. Cheese was standard jaundice-colored mass-production mozz that gives off a ton of oil. Could not really taste any sauce, it was barely there. Sometimes thuggish cheese can be saved by being counterbalanced by a chunky, zesty sauce's sweetness and acidity, but that was definitely not happening here. Mushroom topping was rubbery and flavorless, likely from frozen. Just thin-slice some regular ol' white mushrooms and it will taste much better than frozen "wild" mushrooms. I suppose the one upside is that these small (they only sell one size, about 14") pizzas have enough of the industrial cheese that they end up being quite filling, if you are one of those people who judge quality by quantity. In the end, about what you would expect from a standard New England town "House of Pizza," but sold to MD suburbanites at a markup. read more

Omg if you don't like this place, something's wrong with you! I got fish taco and it's awesome. The fish is tender and fresh. It has a great combination of flavors that do not over power the pallet. The fish is fried or sautéed to perfection and the fish was not greasy. The ambiance and setting made me feel right at home. My boyfriend got mussels and Bianco pizza. We have been eating there or taking out at least once a week (frequently more than once a week) for years. My faves are fish tacos, salmon entree, braised short ribs, cheeseburger and fries, pizzas, soups... Great selection of wines-huge pours. Strong drinks. Reasonably priced. Fun people watching - we run into friends, political and CNN types--my daughter chatted with a Potomac housewife show celeb. An exercise in mediocrity. Every time I eat here, I ask myself why this restaurant was opened. Certainly it is not the work of a creative chef or owner, as the menu reads like a legal document... hamburger, chicken sandwich, minestrone, cobb salad, macaroni and cheese... ... sorry, I fell asleep. This is food you can mostly assemble in your kitchen with little effort. If you are going to do simple, you should at least do it with great ingredients. Unfortunately, WT seems to be doing simple food with very average product. Surveying the area around Wild Tomato, you will find only an overpriced deli, two well below-average Asian restaurants, and a co-op which sells a lot of dried figs, oatmeal, and such, but nothing you could call a meal. I believe this is the only reason Wild Tomato survives. That, and my impression that the residents of Cabin John may not be the most adventurous of eaters. Meals I have eaten include the cheeseburger, chicken club (now retired from the menu), and chicken prosciutto sandwich. I've also tried some appetizers. All were incredibly boring, mundane renditions of the same old food available just about anywhere. They recently replaced the chicken club, which was at least it's own thing on its own bread, with the "chicken prosciutto," which is exactly the same sandwich as their hamburger, on the same roll and with the same toppings, but with a dry, flavorless chicken breast and some prosciutto thrown in as an afterthought, instead of the burger patty. The staff and service are on par with the food, which means that the bare minimum is good enough. I've dined in and carried out, and the experience is about the same. You get the sense that no one really cares about service. I'm never asked if I want ketchup for fries, or anything, really, other than for my credit card. read more

"Cabin John's Local Place" is the claim, and it lives up to it. I'll sometimes stop by for a salad and an Arnold Palmer on my own, and it's also a simple, easy place for us to go as a family. Relaxed vibe, outdoor seating, tasty menu. Cool in the summer, cozy in the winter. They don't overreach with their menu, which is wise for a small neighborhood place. I almost always run into neighbors when I'm there, which is nice. The mussels are consistently good (almost Addie's-level!), and I've enjoyed every one of their salads. One thing to consider, if you go with kids: The pizza takes a relatively long time, so be prepared to keep your hungry ones waiting. (Also, the mac and cheese is a tad inconsistent, sometimes a bit watery.) Once they arrive, though, the pizzas are happily devoured (even by the grown-ups who ordered something else but can't resist). Fish tacos can be ordered blackened, sautéed, or fried, and each option has been nicely balanced flavor-wise, and attractively presented. Wait staff has always been friendly and reasonably attentive; one of the daytime managers can be a little cranky, but takes good care of the diners and the dining room (sans smile). Desserts? Tony and I dined at Wild Tomato, a new restaurant (7945 MacArthur Blvd, Cabin John) in Maryland along with another couple last night. It's a small restaurant that seats about 45 people. Reservations are not accepted, so we waited about 45 minutes. There is a small bar at the back of the room, which was filled with customers waiting for their tables. In fact, the entry way was crowded with customers with no room to stand comfortably. It took a while for our waitress to take our order, as there were only three waiters taking care of this packed restaurant, one being the hostess. Tony and I started with the Thai mussels, which were tasty. The mussels were plump and tender. The broth was rich and I enjoyed the flavors of lemongrass and Thai basil. Included were a few slices of crusty bread for dipping into the broth. Our friends ordered the fried clams. I had a taste and thought they were the best I've ever had. The clams were not over cooked, so they didn't have a rubbery or tough texture. Both Tony and I thought the quantity of the appetizers were very small for the prices they charged ($12 for the mussels and $11 for the clams). For my entree, I ordered fish tacos, which were highly recommended and I agree, they were excellent. The white fish was lightly battered and served in soft tortillas with guacamole, shredded cabbage and carrots, and a chili mayonnaise. The tacos were served with a side of fresh-made salsa and chips. I was stuffed by the time I finished my meal, although I did have some help. I will say my food was cold, but I'll come back to this later. Tony had a burger with a side of fried onion rings. He asked for it medium-rare and was pleasantly surprised it was cooked to order. The onion rings were thinly sliced and lightly battered and were not greasy at all. Our friends ordered the pizza with three types of meats, which he enjoyed; and the 1/2 chicken, also good, but wow, it must have been a 1/2 chick. Okay, so the food was good, but here are the negative points of this place and why I say it's "Just another Bistro." 1. Expensive appetizers for the portions you get. 2. Wine list. Ridiculous! $8 for a 3.5 to 4 ounce glass for a house Pinot Grigio. The prices of bottles of wine started at $34 and went too far up in my mind for a bistro. 3. Very long wait to get a table. 4. A very long wait to get our food. The waitress had told us, "I'm sorry it's taking so long but we had a huge take-out order." What!?? Shouldn't a restaurant take care of their in-house customers first? And if not, shouldn't she have kept her mouth shut? It made us feel as if we were the last on their mind. 5. My tacos were cold. 6. Tony's hamburger and onion rings were cold as well. 7. As a beer snob (Tony), their beer list is sorely lacking. Overall, it wasn't worth the wait for just another bistro. read more

"Organic" American cuisine gone totally wrong. My family came here on the way to catch a flight. My margarita come out watered down and devoid of alcohol. Then I was greeted by a soggy, undercooked, and completely inedible mushroom pizza. My fathers bbq was over cooked, and my moms fish tacos were over seasoned and hard. Our doe-eyed teenage waiter didn't come over to ask how things were until my parents were half way done with their meals, and my barely touched pizza lay across the table from me. Luckily my dad said he'd take the pizza home and have it for lunch. We didn't ask them to remake it since they proved their lack of quality across the board, and I wasn't interested in another soggy pizza. It's nice to have a place that could easily be your nice neighborhood place, if you lived in that neighborhood. :) It's small and cozy and welcoming and a great place for just a nice casual dinner with friends. Our server was very nice, and everyone on the phone was as well. My food was... not that amazing. The veggie burger is not vegan (so sad, when it sounded so good and so easily could be) so my only option was pizza without cheese. Always a good solid option, but theirs was just kinda lacking. The toppings sounded neat, but it was all pretty boring. My friend got the special pizza of the day with duck bacon and a number of other toppings, and hers looks quite delicious, though I imagine the crust was the same and the crust was pretty eh. A little bit pricey for food that wasn't amazing, but the atmosphere is well worth coming back if you want a nice cozy casual place to catch up with friends. read more

A bistro type restaurant was much needed in Cabin John. I thought that Wild Tomato would fill that need when I go shopping at the Bethesda Co-op next door or ride my bike on the C&O canal. I am writing this review after my third lunch experience at Wild Tomato and I won't return. Limited menu, food is not that great to the exception of the Ahi-Tuna Salad. Their real problem is service: nonchalant servers who don't really acknowledge you and don't follow up on your requests. The place is not that big and I had to wait 6-7 minutes to get a glass of water while servers are chatting at the bar. Another time I had to ask for the sugar tray 3 times. read more

Wild Tomato is a great spontaneous stop if you live in the neighborhood or are passing through on a bike hike, but it's not really worth a special trip. Family-friendly offerings include lots of different pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, roast chicken, nachos, and a giant cupcake, offered on a menu typed in a font perilously close to Comic Sans. It's that kind of place. My dinner date and I had the nachos and veggie pizza. Both were solid. The nacho cheese was fresh; my pizza crust was nicely crunchy and chewy, with a lovely combination of fresh toppings. I ordered a sauvignon blanc from the personable, sweet waiter, and when I got a refill, he accidentally topped me up with chardonnay. An oblivious wine dummy, I was happily drinking away when he came over with an apology and a free, cold glass of sauv blanc. That was one drunk bike ride home!! But the gesture was appreciated. The food was nothing you couldn't get in downtown Bethesda or DC. 2 Amys and Paradiso both offer better pizza, and there are a thousand comparable family-dining options around town. But it's great to see an actual restaurant on this stretch of MacArthur. read more

Was baffled by the outside seating which looked like someone had taken their old lawn furniture and sporadically placed it awkwardly along the sidewalk.... the inside was cold and the AC was turned up... but cute and had a nice bar. Ordered the BBQ chicken salad, thought the chicken would be more shredded, as opposed to four slices thickly sliced. When asked if I could have a side of avocado, I was handed a small dish the size of a teaspoon of avocado. 5 slices max. Disappointed. The women next to me were as petty as Bethesda moms could be-- talking about the other moms in their group. This placed fix my need for a fresh salad, I'm pretty sure this is a good neighborhood joint. I see some negative reviews on here for the Wild Tomato, but I believe those people come to this place expecting something that this restaurant is not. Wild Tomato provides a neighborhood restaurant that Cabin John has been missing for years. The menu is very expansive and this really makes the Tomato a place that you can go for any type of occasion. Go there for a nice dinner and they have a variety of options from Steak Frittes to an ever changing daily special which usually centers around seafood. Big game going on tonight? Get carry out from a huge pizza list, pilled high nachos and some very solid wings. It's a shame that I no longer live around here, but every time I come back home me and my dad can go get a beer (they have a seasonal and IPA option) and have a great meal in the process. Pizza and salads here are really yummy. I think it's a bit pricey for what you get but it's by far the best food option in the area. Considering they're tucked away in a strip mall, the space is quite charming. It's small and can get crowded but the waitresses are nice and the food is always tasty. The white pizza is my favorite. The onions are caramelized and the crust is sooooo good. If you're in the neighborhood, it's a perfect place to grab a bite. Great neighborhood place in Cabin John that we hit once every month or so. It can be a bit busy, but the tables turnover pretty quickly. All the entrees are good, sometimes there may be something off but very rarely. Very affordable wine list with some good bargains on it. Staff is attentive and helpful. Some menu highlights include fish tacos that I think are better than the fish taco place in the same shopping center, a delightful steak frites, and an excellent burger for when the mood strikes. The pizzas also appear to be popular, but haven't sampled them myself. But, the key thing here is the chocolate pie martini dessert. It will change your life. My wife gets annoyed that I always get dessert after a big meal here, but its like going to Egypt without seeing the pyramids - you have to have it. read more

Had the fist taco which was enough for my small frame but might be small for the average American. I've been to Wild Tomato a few times -- twice for dinner, and the other couple times for lunch. I definitely preferred going for lunch because at dinner time it was insanely busy and we waited forever for a table, not an easy task in the winter time and they have absolutely no waiting area. The fish tacos were pretty good and I ordered them a second time (a good sign). I'm pretty sure that almost everything else I've ordered was alright. Cons: No one who parks in the parking lot seems to know how to drive, much less park. Also, the tables (and nonexistent waiting area) are so cramped. I am wild about this tomato! I read good things about Wild Tomato in the Post, and decided to give them a try. The place is located in a small outdoor shopping center with its own parking. I ordered the Smoking Pizza, and Oh my god-it was love at first sight. This tasty pie has smoked mozarella, bacon, chorizo, marinated peppers (be still my heart!) and mushrooms. It comes on a thin crust that holds up well to the toppings. But the best was yet to come. I took a bite and discovered that the pizza sauce has been enhanced with chipotle to give it a nice kick in your mouth. This is a sauce to remember! I ate my entire pizza and yearn for more. I just had an amazing veggie burger here after a tennis game down the street. We happened upon it by chance. I did a quick Yelp search after our game. Wild Tomato didn't have the best reviews on Yelp, but someone mentioned eating there after going to the park, so it seemed like a good choice. We also didn't have anywhere to go but West, as MacArthur Blvd was all kinds of messed up (MD: fix one-lane bridge and four-way stops). So we trundled West, pulling into a lovely little shopping center. I like Cabin John, it has a fun name and it's one of many sleepy riverside neighborhoods along the Potomac. The restaurant is in a small storefront next to a deli. It has outdoor seating, but we ate inside, hot and dehydrated as we were. Our waitress was very helpful, and I enjoyed the veggie burger with cheese as she said I would. The burger was $12, which is pricey, but it came with an excellent salad, fresh avocado and a pickle. The pizzas cost around that much, and they look big enough for two people, although my friend didn't think so. I split my burger in half and was still full. I'll be enjoying a large second meal. My friend couldn't finish his buffalo chicken salad and he let it go in the trash. Some people simply refuse to split meals. The restaurant was busy at six when we arrived and busier when we left, so it must be a local favorite. I'll certainly be going back the next time I'm in Cabin John. read more

All I should have to say is fish tacos! That however wouldnt do justice to this beautifully quaint restaurant located exactly where something like this needed to be for the last 20 years. I grew up in cabin John my whole life and used to frequent the market next door before it was sold. Now that place sucks and thank god Wild Tomato is here to rescue us. Their sandwiches are all pretty much amazing (especially the turkey club) they use heaps of avocado which I love and the staff are all like family and treat customers that way too. I know everyone there personally now and they go out of their way to help me which isn't said about most restaurants these days. Art work inside is really aesthetically pleasing and they have TV's with sports playing so while I pretend listen to my girlfriend I can watch sports. I ordered the vegetable pizza last time and was amazed at how fresh and gourmet it was. This place is great for lunch and dinner. Sitting outside it also a great feature they offer. Wine list is acceptable and the beers are constantly rotating on draft. They usually always have a seasonal and an IPA which will keep any beer snob like myself happy. I had been flipping through other yelp reviews and found one from 2011 where they described an item no longer on the menu, "Smoking Pizza" which is a thin crust topped with smoked mozarella, bacon, chorizo, marinated peppers, mushrooms, and sauce enhanced with chipotle.
