We absolutely love Bassetts!! It's our favorite restaurant in Poolesville!! You can get burgers (which are the best!!), fish, chicken, Mexican, crab cakes- anything you want! Took my Mom here for lunch on Sunday and we loved it! Poolesville is such an awesome small rural town and this restaurant is staffed by locals and clearly attracts mostly locals given the waitstaff new all the customers. The building appears to be a very old home but recently renovated and upgraded. the parking lots (2) are behind the building. There are 3-4 small dining rooms and it's a very cozy mom and pop type vibe. The staff and the customers were all very upbeat and happy and the menu is amazing - so many really great choices. We both got the fish and chips - it came with 3 decent sized portions of crispy cod and fries with old bay seasoning and light coleslaw. Delicious. Bassett's is a great restaurant and we always have a wonderful time there. The drive to Poolesville is nice and relaxing. The restaurant is cozy , with several rooms and a bar. It feels like a house. The menu is great and the drinks are good. I think a good test is the bloody mary and i really enjoyed them. Great selections of apps- my fave was the Southwest Chicken rolls. Everyone loved their mains. The cauliflower mash is as good as any potatoes. The menu has something for everyone. I really enjoyed my salmon. It was not dry or slimy. It's hard not to order the steak with the smell of the place! The service was excellent as was our whole experience. Our experiences at Bassett's have always been positive. We love Bassett's! A wonderful restaurant located in the middle of Poolsville, Maryland. I dined there as a guest at a family function. Very nice interior with ample tables throughout the restaurant. Very nice side bar with several televisions to view all the current sports action. I had the single crab cake which was delicious and for appetizers had the crab dip and also the spinach dip and they were delicious. Service was excellent and meals were served promptly as I was with a large group. Plenty of parking in the rear of the restaurant. I did see a Maryland State Trooper vehicle monitoring the intersection outside the restaurant, so please drink responsibly. read more

We visit Bassetts a few times a year when we are out riding the Hog, or coming back from cutting a tree at the Christmas tree farm in Buckeystown. Last year (2022) the place was packed, and every table filled and not enough servers. This year, we were the only table in the restaurant. That is very sad, as the place is charming, and the food is good. The closing of Whites Ferry had definitely hurt the town. The large pretzel comes with a delicious white cheese blend. The burgers are great and cooked exactly to temp. Stopping here always feels like a mini vacation out in the country. It is nice to get away from the Beltway. read more

First off, I don't understand the "Fine Food" logo when your menu is mainly burgers, sandwiches, breakfast, etc.... and then your tables are covered in glitter with shellac. Plenty of parking. We were there Sunday morning and when we ordered, we were the only table. The waitress read back my order and still bought me the wrong eggs (over medium is not SCRAMBLED !!). I generally like Bassetts. Food is pretty good, bartenders friendly. But, their cooks or kitchen doesn't follow deviations from menu very well. Like if you can't eat dairy. Every time I ask for them to leave off the cheese on a salad and they always forget or just don't read the instructions. This restaurant was confusing at first! Their Yelp page is titled, Bassetts Fine Foods. Looking at the menu, it has fried chicken, sandwiches, pizzas, nachos, and other things that are not associated with fine foods. The ownership history explains everything. It was originally a gourmet restaurant owned by Leo Bassett. It has changed ownership at least twice. The latest was in January 2022. It is now homestyle cooking. My wife and I got the Asparagus Wrapped in Prosciutto, the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake sandwich, the Grilled Calves Liver, the Toll House pie, and coffee.    The Asparagus Wrapped in Prosciutto was an appetizer on their specials list. It had stalks of asparagus and mozzarella wrapped with prosciutto. It was grilled and then drizzled with a balsamic sauce. The flavors from the balsamic sauce and grilling were good. The mozzarella added no flavor to the dish, and the prosciutto was too salty. This dish has potential as a regular appetizer with two changes.    The Jumbo Lump Crab Cake sandwich had lettuce and tomato in a potato roll. It came with a choice of fries (hand-cut or crinkle) or potato chips. I picked the hand-cut fries. It had decent sized lumps of crabmeat. The crab flavor was decent, but it had no seasoning except for some flavor from the small amount of bread filler, mayonnaise, and egg that binds it together. Mixing some Old Bay and Worcester sauce into the crab cakes would help! The fries were chewy and not crispy. BOOO! It had the potato skin on them. That was great! A tip to the owner: freeze the fresh sliced potatoes in a single layer for an hour. Keep the slices separated. Then, store them frozen in an airtight container until you need to fry them. They'll be crispy.    The Grilled Calves Liver came with brown gravy, onions, and strips of bacon on top. The sides were carrots, green beans, and mashed potatoes. The liver was tender and moist with a good liver flavor. The bacon was crisp, not salty. The onions were cooked well but sour tasting. That was odd and not good. The brown gravy tasted like a simple thickened beef broth. It had no depth of flavor. The carrots and green beans were simply boiled. The mashed potatoes were made with real potatoes. It was a little lumpy with no seasoning or butter flavor. The sides were edible and nothing special. The liver and bacon were the standouts in this dish.    The Toll House pie came with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate drizzle. The pie filling had the taste of semisweet chocolate morsels with brown sugar. It wasn't too sweet. The whipped cream was very light and mildly sweet. The ice cream and drizzle were typical. Overall, it and the coffee were an enjoyable finish to this dinner.    The coffee was medium roast, smooth, and not bitter. It wasn't strong or burnt. It came in a tall 8 ounce cup with a saucer. The creamer was half & half. Nicely done!    The service was excellent! Responsive, attentive, polite, friendly, and relatively quick. It doesn't get better than that!! The dining room and restrooms were clean but dated. There were 2 unisex restrooms. One had a toilet, and the other had a toilet and a urinal. They have outdoor seating in the back of the restaurant next to the parking lot. There were 4 sections of dining rooms and a small bar. Overall, this is a nice neighborhood restaurant that could be great with some improvements in the cooking. read more

I went today for lunch and ordered the Chicken & Waffles. When my food arrived, chicken was hot but my waffle was cold. It appears that they cooked the waffle before the chicken and just left it sitting. I sent the food back in hopes of getting a hot waffle. When the replacement order came out 30 minutes later, the waffle was burnt. Did they really serve someone burnt waffles and think it was okay? I will never patronize this restaurant again. Wow, Mondays are to be avoided. I ordered a full rack of baby back ribs and they were inedible. The texture and blackness under the sauce tells me these were made on the weekend, probably on Saturday . They were clearly cooked then refrigerated and then cooked again on the grill today. They were black, hard and stringy. The meat was difficult to chew . Waste of $27 . This has been a trend lately with them cooking the death out of the proteins. read more

My friend insisted on coming here for breakfast one Sunday morning. All the way from Silver Spring. I agreed; she was driving. It is way out in the middle of nowhere. It's charming though. The interior Christmas decoration are welcoming. The device was very cordial. The breakfast was good, but average home-style fare. Plus, on Sundays you receive a free glass of champagne or mimosa. I had French toast-something I never make for myself at home. It was three thick slices. So filling, I only ate half. At $6.00, it was very reasonably priced. So was $1.75 for a large glass mug of steaming hot chocolate. My friend had eggs, home fries and scrapple. While she ate it all (save a piece of scrapple for her pooch), she wasn't blown away by her meal. Overall though, it was a very affordable breakfast. I was tempted by the crab cake Benedict, but for $18, and with no pictures posted here on Yelp, I didn't want to shell out that much money. My favorite version in DC is cheaper than this. Bassett's has been a staple in Poolesville as long as I can remember. It's had it's great, good, and not so good times in my 28 years on this earth. It recently came under new management and I came here with my mom and her husband while I was home here before thanksgiving. Despite a packed parking lot on a Tuesday there was plenty of room in the dining area as I expected it was a lot of folks at the bar. While it took a while for the server to come initially service was great. They had a nice double IPA on tap at a reasonable price that I ordered and I got a Diet Coke (for some reason their fountain Diet Coke has always tasted better than all others and it has remained that way under new management). While it may be more expensive than under prior management I still think the food is a great deal (expensive for Poolesville but the portions are large). We ordered the large pretzel served with queso and mustard, tacking on the crab dip. Everything was fantastic and the portion size substantial. One of my favorite things about this place (besides the Diet Coke) is the side salad with ranch and it still lived up to my childhood memories. I got the French dip sandwich (large, juicy and flavorful, with an Au jus I could've chugged at the end of the night), my mom got a heaving chicken pot pie which looked delectable, and her husband got the Reuben which was also hefty. The fries were crispy and full of flavor. Overall, while they may have had some growing pains and some sticker shock from longtime Poolesville residents, this spot is an institution and I'm very happy it's still around and serving food on the highest echelon that I've seen them provide. I'm looking forward to coming back next time I'm at home. read more

REALLY DISAPPOINTING. Was a regular and now this place is now under new ownership. A little remodeling, new-looking menu. Anyway, went in last night with a friend and it took almost 15 minutes for a server to come to our table...pretty bad. There was "some confusion..." We were about to walk out but wanted to give it a try since we're in fairly regularly. Once we had a server assigned to our table, she was friendly...but the food was COLD with NO flavor. Ordered the turkey dinner...and the half rack of ribs...sad. We left with a bad taste in our mouths as the ants were crawling all around us in the enclosed patio area. This is such a disappointment that Bassett's seems to be going downhill. Hope they are able to get it together but I don't have high hopes. read more

I finallY decided to check out this little jem in Poolesville. The restaurant has been around for years and come to find out my FAVORITE BARTENDER JEN, works here. I have been following her for ten years. She has the best customer service skills and LOVES what she does. Bassetts food and music choice is Great! I had the fried chicken, baked potato and Mac and cheeese and I have to saY WOW! So good. The owner Eric was very welcoming and made you feel like family. These folks have made a sincere effort towards safety. We were outside, under a tent with tables well spaced. While it felt like a wedding reception near a parking lot it served its purpose. Dig this place! I've been here a few fall Sundays and its a great place to watch football. The bar is full but not packed. Bartenders are awesome. Patrons are all cool and respectful locals. Dinner with friends tonight.. The restaurant had few diners tonight but the kitchen was rather slow considering we all ordered salads.2 salads came out without the accompanying dressings - quickly rectified by our waitress. 3rd salad came out, however mine did not. A few minutes later the waitress came by to let me know they forgot my chicken - the salad I ordered came with chicken. She said it would be like 2 minutes and then disappeared. Several minutes go by still no food and no sign of waitress. More minutes go by and by now my dinner companions are nearly finished their entre salads. By the time mine came out I was done. I wish I could say this was a one time occurrence but it is not. We even told the waitress that anytime I order a salad they forget my chicken. How hard is it for the kitchen staff to make sure a entre salad comes with the items that is states on the menu? I really want to support this local business but it's getting difficult with hit and miss food quality and consistency. The waitstaff are nice and try hard but don't seem to get the training they need, and certainly the mistakes and oversights by the kitchen don't help. read more

So we arrived as it took more than 5 but less than ten minutes to be welcomed. We then had to wait another 5 minutes to ask about the menu and order drinks. Drinks then took 15 minutes to arrive. Then we were still waiting to order. Finally, we ordered. Then, after we were served, one member of our party was told they were out of his dish. No one came back ever to refill our drinks or to get our orders for the bottomless menu? What a waste of money that was!! And getting an alcoholic beverage is impossible. No shot of that. So finally my husband still has no food and it's way past time for us to leave. We get a "sorry, there were server failures" and nothing else. They were nice and took my husbands food off...which he never got......so kind of them. Never Coming Back!!! My family and I had a lovely Sunday lunch on the patio. We certainly came for the fried chicken, but we enjoyed everything we ordered. We got a few plates that we shared amongst our group; the portions were great and everyone got well more than the "bite" they expected. We started with crab and artichoke dip. Very good. We followed it up with French toast. At only $6, this plate is a steal. And very yummy. We then shared the brisket, mashed potatoes, and green beans. There was a lot of gravy- which I loved- but if gravy isn't your fave, just be aware. The fried chicken itself really hit the spot and made the drive to Poolsville worth it. The service was great; our waitress was extremely attentive. So glad we made the trip! read more

Not a very good place. As someone else pointed out on here, theres not a lot of places to eat in Poolesville, so unless you wanna drive 30 minutes to one of the surrounding cities, your choices are pretty limited. Bassetts has pretty much taken advantage of that fact, as I'm pretty much convinced that its the ONLY reason anyone would eat here. That, and its mostly full of locals who have lived here their entire lives, swear by the place cause they've eaten here forever, and refuse to accept that theres better food outside the town, for whatever reason. My fiancé and I have been here twice, first when a relative moved out here, and again after we did and received a free meal for becoming residents. We weren't impressed at all either time, by anything about the place. First off, it looks like it was just somebody's old house that they turned into a restaurant. Theres no place for people who are waiting for tables to wait other than a hallway that runs straight through the middle of the restaurant. The place is full of odd, old trinkets, especially bird themed things. There are even little bird statues hanging from the ceilings in parts of the place. Just weird, dimly lit, terribly outdated and unattractive. Not at all a place that makes me feel comfortable or hungry. The service, as others have said, can be good or bad depending on when you go. The first time we went, it was not good. Our server was very awkward and though the restaurant was not at all busy, took very long breaks between the times she came to check on our table. The second time was better. Our server was very personable and attentive, even though the restaurant WAS busy this time. On to the food. It's honestly some of the worst food I've ever gotten at a restaurant. Terribly overpriced and most of it, you can tell is not fresh. Both times we got the crab and artichoke dip as an appetizer, which has a VERY strong flavor of....something. There's one ingredient that completely takes over everything else in the recipe. The second time I got a steak, which I'm completely baffled as to how you screw up a grilled steak, but it was burned and flavorless. Luckily, that was from the free meal we got, because the steak was definitely not worth the $20 price tag. All in all, like I said, one of the worst places I've ever eaten. Great spot with a local, friendly, neighborhood feel. We came to Bassett's before heading to Markoff's Haunted Forest, which is just short 10 minute drive away. Bassett's was packed before 6pm and it was clear why! They had a very extensive menu as our group of 9 found ourselves wanting to order everything on the menu. I went with the Chicken Parm and left more than full. The table also really enjoyed the scallops and fish and chips. We also ordered the hot crab dip which came with warm toasted break. This was delicious! They also have warm apple cider drinks with bourbon and rum, which provided a perfect fall blend to warm us up after a day of apple picking at the Homestead Farm and before heading to Markoff's.
