I seek out restaurants that use fresh, local products. I first came to Fireside Grill on my birthday. The place had a family feel to it, like everyone there knew one another very well. I ate inside the dining area, which was decorated with some eclectic pieces. The food and service were both excellent. I particularly enjoyed the steak with chimmichurri sauce my boyfriend ordered. I had high hopes for this restaurant, as I have heard so many good things about it from my family and friends. Perhaps tonight was an off night, but I won't be going back to find out any time soon. We were greeted by a rather unfriendly hostess who brought us to our table. We sat for 25 minutes before anyone even asked us if we wanted anything to drink. When the waiter finally did come over, we weren't even offered an apology or an explanation. If it wasn't already pretty late on a Saturday night, we probably would have walked out after the first 15 mins of waiting. However, we both decided to stick it out with hopes that the food would be better than the service. We ordered the crab cakes and cheese plate, which weren't terrible. Our dinners on the other hand left a lot to be desired. A solid 45 minutes after we ordered our food came out. My husband's filet was dry, as was my chicken. It was as if they had been reheated or left under a warming light. I asked for spinach and was given broccoli, and my "risotto" tasted like boil in a bag white rice. For a $100 dinner (we didn't even order alcohol or dessert), I expected a lot more. To add insult to injury, when my husband made the reservation he let them know that it was my Birthday. They even asked him what my name was. However, there was no mention of it by anyone- including the hostess, who clearly had to see it written down next to our reservation. I wasn't expecting them to roll out the red carpet, but I also wasn't expecting to have one of the worst dining experiences (fine or otherwise) that I've had in a longgg time. I've never written a bad review for anything before. I am always overly polite to waitstaff and I would never make a huge deal of anything to a waiter (I sucked it up and ate the broccoli when I really wanted spinach)...But I feel like I need to put this out there because our experience just really sucked. Came here on a Saturday night, I order a chicken quesadilla which it was really good but I also Odder a shrimps and pepper corn and I'll not say it was bad let me just say it's something About the taste that kept me wondering, something about it was not right, not sure if it was the corn that had a weird tasted or some of the other stuff they put in it but the aftertastes was just not pleasant I only ate the 3 Shrimps in there and after that I left it on the table just the way it came in other than that everything else was ok the service was really good, if I'm back in town I'll def consider this place. read more

I come here a few times a month and I keep coming back because the food is amazing. Everything I've ordered so far is rich and tasty. Ambiance has a cozy, earthy feel, always with candles burning for dinner. Best calamari I've ever had! Fresh, crispy, and delicious. Potato soup is amazing as well. Wasabi glazed salmon is amazing, tortilla crusted salmon is great. It is always cooked to perfection and melts in your mouth. Steak is great, HOWEVER, they don't always have steak on the menu or on the specials menu, so if that's something you're looking for - call ahead of time. Owner is very friendly and personable if she sees you come back after a couple times. Very often she is there, serving drinks at the bar, and making sure the that everything in the restaurant is operating smoothly. read more

Spectacular! The professional staff is welcoming, and experienced. The server, a true pro who knows the regulars and recognizes newcomers as potential repeat customers, which I intend to be. Sadly, my first mediocre experience here. Was unaware it was Hudson Valley Restaurant Week, when we went. So there was a special menu available. The menu was 3 courses, 3 app selections, 4 entrees and 2 desserts, with suggested wine pairings. Opted for the Butternut Squash soup, BBQ & Beer Brisket and something called the 7 bar yummy dessert. After ordering some of the suggested wine pairings, our server returned to say the Brisket was no longer available and they had added Short Ribs in it's place. Strange that they would be out of Brisket as it was early, about 7pm, so I accepted the Short Ribs. The soup was fantastic. Not a great fan of butternut squash, but took a chance and it was a great choice. There is where it went downhill. The Short Ribs had little flavor. I am a true carnivore, but I actually didn't finish it as I was not enjoying it. The dessert was like a super sweet granola bar. Should have had the carrot cake. My wife had the Califlower Steak and was quite pleased with it. Was initially unsure of the Restaurant Week menu but the food is always good at Wildfire and BBQ Brisket would have certainly been good. Perhaps that's why they were out. When I learned the Brisket was done for the night, should have gone back to the regular menu for the Prime Rib. This one experience will not stop me from returning though. Wildfire Grill offers a five star culinary experience in the cute and quiet village of Montgomery. I have enjoyed going to Wildfire for over a year now and every experience I have had is phenomenal. I am big on customer service as I have worked in five star hotels - Wildfire exceeds all expectations - your water glass never goes empty, you never have to ask for a cocktail, and every team member is super friendly. I also appreciate their attention to details - all of the staff wears black, the dining room is clean and decorated with unique artifacts from around the world, the mood lighting is perfect, and the dish presentation is top notch - something out of a culinary magazine! I was so excited to finally try this restaurant as there seems to be so little to choose from in Orange County. I have to say I was a little disappointed. Our server was nice but she seemed to forget about us a lot. We had the calamari to start and it was ok nothing spectacular. I had the chicken roulade and my husband had the steak. Both were ok but not overly good. My husband wished the side dish portions were a bit larger. We ordered the chocolate cake for dessert but weren't told until we were waiting for quite some time that it had to be cooked to order. It was a long dinner and reminded us both of how long it takes at John's Harvest Inn. I think the biggest issue for us was the price of the meal which seemed steep for the quality of the food. I think the prices and slow service will probably keep us from making this a regular addition to our restaurant list. read more

Second time going for a sit down Dinner here. The first time was pretty good I had a bottle of wine and a kale salad, can't go too wrong. This time not so much I went in with a few friends of mine. We first went outside because the weather was nice but the chairs weren't too comfortable(rusted many of them) and their were bee's bothering us so we went inside. One of the ladies informed what seemed to be like a manger/owner. She seemed very irritated and didn't bother to hide it. No big deal the waitress was nice. The food came. I had macaroni and mussels I had to add a ton of salt for flavor.. but whatever.. We then asked for our bill to be split by our waitress. Without any policy written or making us aware their was gratuity added. I asked the waitress is it something always done she said whenever a bill is split. Which is interesting because I had asked for a split bill the time before with no gratuity added automatically. Maybe it was a new policy but with how the "manger" seemed it made me uncomfortable. Was there last night very quaint neat little place with a attentive and personable staff. The problem I had was in menu choices outside they have a large menu posted not the case when your seated. They have a price fixed menu on wed and thurs night and an ala carte menu available. The waiter/ bartender was great and was well informed and made great cocktails. We ordered off the fixed menu 29.95 includes choice of 3 apps 3 or 4 dinner choices and 2 desert choices. My wife ordered the hangar steak which was delicious and cooked as ordered accompanied by sautéed zucchini and pan fried potatoes all very good. I had the fish tacos which I didn't care for the fish used it was fresh but had an odd flavor like it was a fresh water fish which I dislike it was also very plain 3 very small flour tortillas each with a tiny piece of fried fish some shredded cabbage and some chopped tomato and a lemon wedge. I don't think the fish amounted to 4 oz. total and the lack of any kind of Mexican inspired sauce baffled me and how about a piece of lime instead of lemon. I usually don't comment on portion size but for $30 this was a total rip. I should have asked what type of fish was being used my guess would be Swai or talapia which I feel should not be offered in a fine dining situation because everyone knows these are a cost effective farm raised junk fish which I won't serve at home no less order out. Desert was a peach cobbler no taste couldn't tell you if it was peach or apple and a chocolate expresso moose which was very good. All in all I might try it again but am very up in the air. read more

Stopped in for lunch after a visit to the art gallery in town. Great place for lunch with an interesting menu. We had clams with chorizo and cilantro, a short rib sandwich on ciabatta bread and a fig, pear and feta cheese pizza. This is one of those places that I eat at a few times a month and love it! The atmosphere is inviting. Thursday nights there is live music. The menu changes regularly and the chef puts a nice twist on traditional favorites. They do a farm dinner which I have never participated in but it looks interesting and would love to try it sometime! The owner is almost always in the restaurant and is friendly while making sure everything runs smoothly. It definitely isn't the cheapest place to eat but you get what you pay for. Food is good, but not spectacular. The decor in the dining room is African/Voodoo, which is a bit...unnerving. The small bar and tables in the entrance room, however, is awesome; try and sit there. They have wine on tap, if that's your thing. Worth a go, but it is not, as some have written, five star. It is a true four star: good food, decent prices (though some entrees are expensive), nice atmosphere and decent/sometimes slow service. Five stars in Orange County NY belong to more serious venues, such as Backyard Bistro just down the road in Montgomery, or Nina in Middletown. read more

We have been several times over the last five years. I wish it was closer. They put it all together here. The food is wonderful, service is on point and the atmosphere is rustic and charming. It really is not as expensive as other reviewers say. I recently had the duck. It was not the least bit greasy and the potion was large for duck. My GF had the homemade tortillini and it was great. The setting is eclectic, the chalkboard wall behind the bar, the bottles of wine scattered around - the randomly placed pieces of art on the wall are really more an afterthought more so than artful. We started off with the bread, butter and tapenade. The kalamata tapenade was divine - briny, tangy and glistening with just a touch of oil - with the freshly baked rosemary bread. Even the butter was at room temperature, which few restaurants take the time to set out ahead of time for diners to easily spread on warm bread. I was very very happy at this point. I was greatly anticipating the entrée. Sad to say I was disappointed. The main entrees were phyllo wrapped scallops with garlicky spinach and mashed potatoes and a chicken Oscar with a crabmeat topping. The scallops were pretty good but overly salted, the potatoes utterly bland and whipped into baby food. (While I do prefer my potatoes to have substance and be lumpy, there wasn't much flavor to make up for the airy potatoes.) The best part of the plate was the garlicky spinach - absolute perfection, cooked so it still had some texture with the garlic infused throughout. The other entrée - the chicken was absolutely perfectly cooked, tender and juicy, but the crabmeat on top was lackluster and tinny. If it was fresh crabmeat - they should get a new fishmonger. The broccoli was nicely tooth tender, but naked and sans any sort of seasoning. With the attention to the spinach on the one plate, the broccoli on the other plate seemed woefully lacking. Overall, it was a pleasant, although overpriced meal. The chicken was $28, which is astronomical, while the scallops were $26. Darn near Michelin prices without the oomph.... May try lunch next time as I've heard their lunch is much better than their dinner. The service appeared disorganized as it seemed they were training a couple of new employees - it was quite amusing to see them following their trainer like ducklings - but the service for our table was great so no complaints on that front! What was absolutely unacceptable were the 3 flies and a moth that wandered around the room. The only time I'd be okay with that is outside. It was a beautiful night, so the breeze was welcome from the open front door. HOWEVER- waving insects away from my food is absolutely disgusting and warrants not coming back. If we return it would be in the winter when we do not have to fight winged invaders for our dinner. They really should invest in a screen door as this is the second time we've been here and bugs were present the first time as well. We may come back for wine, bread and dip only. read more

After a nice brunch experience, I returned for dinner on a Saturday evening. The food is good, can be very good. Varied menu that everyone should find something they want to try.
