My wife and I have passed by this restaurant numerous times, and today we made the excellent decision to dine here for breakfast. The Chicken Fried Steak was truly outstanding--arguably the best we've ever had. Additionally, Socorro's customer service was exceptional, deserving a perfect 10/10. As first timers the food was good just a weird after taste from the eggs, the service was good as well, our server was very nice and attentive. It's very nice to experience other breakfast places that are far from home and that are vintage western style, the only bad thing their bathroom was out of service, though my server warned me and told me at my own risk to check if they worked but I was left grossed out after seeing what was in the toilet.. couldn't finish my food after that.. Absolutely love this place! We travel to the Bay Area fairly often & this will be our stop in-between from now on. It's exactly what you'd expect a small town cafe/diner to be. The waitress was very welcoming. The place was clean with a good selection on the menu. I opted for breakfast (served all day) - Bruce's Skillet Mess. My son had the Deluxe Grilled Cheese & my husband the daily special, Waffle & Chicken. Everything was sooo good. I don't know who Bruce is, but he cooks up a good egg scramble - eggs, choice of pork, hash browns, onion, bell pepper, mushrooms & cheese. The biscuit was good but the homemade apricot/strawberry jam was delicious. My husband's chicken was perfectly breaded & my son left nothing on his plate. This little spot off the beaten path may have been overlooked had it not been for Yelp! We ate here for lunch and their breakfast looks great too, everything is served all day. Had a grilled chicken sandwich on fresh ciabatta bread. Should have gone with the added avocado recommended by the server but I wasn't thinking. Added a side salad which was split into two to share. Great ranch dressing on the side. We upgraded to the beer battered onion rings that did not disappoint. I found a near whole mushroom covered in mozzarella cheese on the sandwich with crisp bacon. It was incredible, everything I'd hoped it would be and more. They bake their own bread! Don't overlook this gem just off the 101, convenient and we felt right at home. Had to try it after driving by and using next door gas station for more than 45 years. Major mistake. My husband's "world famous Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich" was served burnt and my barbeque tri tip sandwich was greasy beyond eating. I opened it up and ate the meat which covered less than 1/2 the bread. The $4.00+ charge for the iced tea was the icing on the cake. Stumbled across this retro diner when looking for a place to have lunch. Got lucky with the Wild Horse. Nowadays, these sorts of places are few and far between, so it's always a pleasure to spend time in one, even if you don't choose to dine at the counter with the swiveling high-backed seats. (Regret.) The rearing horse sculpture outside is a fun novelty, but just the beginning of all things western that you'll find inside, complete with a bison head on the wall and horse-themed pieces for sale by local artists. With its location right off the freeway next to a gas station, most will think that it's just a place for truckers and road trippers. However, I overheard a few parties having the familiar "I'm a regular" conversations with the waitress and even two ladies (who had apparently run into each other there) conversing about a neighbor friend they had in common. Food was good--we had a grilled chicken sandwich on foccacia (choice of accompanying cole slaw or fries) and veggie omelet. They also have your standard greasy spoon items like biscuits and gravy. The waitresses were very nice and by chance we also got to talk to the owner who coincidentally was eating there with her great grandchildren. On the way out there's a convenience store in a separate building (same owner) where you can get snacks, coffee, and gum for the road...even the local newspaper. read more

I believe the Wildhorse was on some list of best truck stop in California. In an age of corporate travel center chains with 'mall' food court food, it's nice to see an independent truck stop diner. Ordered a chicken fried steak, the dish by which I benchmark highway eateries. It was very good, the service was prompt, the food came out hot and the price was about right (everything cost more now, it's hard to calibrate but the price was fine for a homecooked meal. ) I would stop again. On the drive back, I needed gasoline but I was hungry too. How convenient that this restaurant was right next it. I've always wanted to eat one of these cafes next to a gas stop, there is literally nothing else around except farms for miles. We were greeted by a friendly server and there was yelp voucher $17 for $20 which they accepted. I ordered a trucker's burger and my SO ordered a quesadilla with no meat, that subtracted 3.50 from the price of it. The food came quickly, the trucker's burger is no joke at 1/2 pound of beef with bacon. The french roll, is a bit weird as it doesn't encompass the patty properly but it tasted good and the portion for the price is pretty good. If I was hungry and needed to stop for gas I wouldn't mind coming back to this location. the servers are welcoming and the food is well portioned. read more

We stop here pretty frequently on our way down to the central coast to fuel up both the vehicle and our bodies. The food is homemade and good quality. Good breakfast items and diner-type fare. Even have homemade jam and salsa. The prices are fairly reasonable and the staff always provides VERY good, friendly, fast service. There is plenty of big rig and RV parking. I won't take off a star, but if I had a suggestion, run a box blade over your truck/RV parking area. There's potholes big enough to lose the whole rig out there. read more

The food wasn't up to to price. The portions are small. For two people it was 40 dollars for an omelette and french toast. I had to send it back because the first time it was so meet cooked. For less food and drinks or was ten dollars more than what we paid at Denny's the day before. We ordered the same thing french toast slam and an omelette. We went for a brunch for the 1st time on Saturday. Wow what a surprise. The food was fantastic. There was something for the adults and children. Our hostess was very good too. Restaurant is small and located next door to the Valero truck stop. It is very clean and offers the typical cafe style menu (burgers, cold sandwiches, breakfast, etc). There notable item on the menu is Chicken Fried Steak. I am not a fan of that meal so I chose a Wild Burger which was very good. However, if Chicken Fried Steak is your thing you definitely won't leave hungry as several other guest ordered it and their plates were overflowing with food. My husband ate Steak Asada and he said the flavor was wonderful. There was only one waiter working and they had a steady flow of customers. The young man has the best attitude and didn't get frustrated in the least. He was extremely pleasant and was attentive to each customer. OK is about the best that I can say for this place. I have stopped here 4 times over the past 3-4 years, at different times of the day, different days of the week. The quality is at least consistant, as it appears that the cook has little or no interest in his job...the servers are great, however. If I am northbound from SLO Co., I will usually just wait for King City, and go to any of the several better places there. The gas station has the best prices between Salinas and Paso Robles, and has great service. Parking at the cafe is sparse, if you go by the lines, considering the acres of pavement, and the place seems to be busy most of the time...maybe its just me. read more
