Our driver and guide Michael was an absolute star, tailoring the trip to our interests. Because we booked a private tour, we got picked up and dropped off directly from our cabin! Michael was super knowledgeable of the park itself, the ecosystems, flora and fauna. He shared lots of stories about historical figures who influenced this area in Colorado. We went to several lakes, waterfalls, and hiked in several different spots. We got to see lots of wildlife - moose, elk, deer, marmot, chipmunks, pikas, and lots of birds! The day trip was a highlight of our time in Estes Park and we're so thankful for the special care Michael showed our family. We had a variety of mobility amongst the members of our group and he was very accommodating to our needs.

There is a gift shop before you begin and at the top. The ride takes about 7=8 minutes each way. They have continuous one car up and one car down. Each car holds 8-10 people, depending on their weight. They do a good job of keeping groups together. The lines can be long and we waited about 45 minutes to go up and another 25 minutes on the way down. Once at the top, there are hiking trails, some great overlooks, and of course spectacular views. I would say that the views are worth the price. You can buy peanuts to feed the chipmunks, which seemed to be a popular activity. The chipmunks were happy and well fed. The reason for 4 stars is the long wait in line. The views are 5 star but you have to be patient for the payoff.

I had read Stephen Kings book The Shining when I was way too young and it absolutely terrified me like it should have. When the movie came out, I really enjoyed it but you can never replicate the book. Visiting this old and historic somewhat haunted hotel, I was ready to learn more about the imagination of Stephen King. His staying here many years ago brought about the inspiration to write the book. Although no filming took place here for the movie, the mini series was filmed here in 1997. We began the tour within the hotel and we had a fairly new tour guide all the way from Turkey. Unfortunately, I forgot his name but he was was well spoken, funny and informative. My favorite part of the tour was visiting the renovated caretakers cottage. It was decorated with period furniture and pictures of the original family that took care of the Stanley Hotel many years ago. I couldn't believe there was a 100 year old Victrola that still worked. Our guide was kind enough to play it for us. Upstairs they have recreated the Shining Suite which included a bed, the famous patterned Shining carpet and of course the bathroom from Room 237. Just walking in the bathroom took me back to that particular chapter of the book. REDRUM! Pricing for the tour was $30 and you can purchase tickets online. The hotel charges $10 to park and provides you with a $5 chip to spend in the hotel. A historical hotel tour is also offered here for $25. Outside of the tour, the hotel is definitely a place to visit. Location is phenomenal as it sits in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.

Jared is a very knowledgeable naturalist and he has a great entertaining, conversational manner. Not only did he find tons of wildlife for us to watch, he talked all about the animal behaviors we were seeing (that's not common in my experience - a lot of guides I've toured with end the conversation at "hey look! An elk.") Even in between seeing animals, Jared was unstumpable. I had questions about the trees in RMNP and the geology and he has so many interesting facts to share. It was 3 of us, including my 8-year-old son, and the conditions couldn't have been better--just a little snow, some mud, and plenty of opportunities for big splashes (which my son absolutely loved). We did a 5-hour rental, which felt like the perfect amount of time to explore without feeling rushed. The equipment was in great shape, and even the truck used to haul the ATV and trailer to the trailhead was well-maintained--everything felt professional and dialed in. The team really made the experience stand out. Everyone we interacted with was fantastic, and Andrew in particular was a superstar--he handled both checkout and check-in, made everything easy, and clearly cares about making sure customers have a great time. We'll definitely be back, especially to experience the trails in full snow. Highly recommend all around.

Rocky Mountain National Park is absolutely beautiful, but it's important to know before you go that…read moreit is not pet-friendly on the trails. Dogs are only allowed in developed areas like parking lots and campgrounds. We visited shortly after a major wildfire, and it was heartbreaking to see how much of the forest had burned. It really puts into perspective how powerful nature can be. One of the most interesting things we learned from a park ranger was that moose are considered one of the biggest wildlife concerns around dogs, even service animals. I never would have guessed that! The ranger explained that dogs can make wildlife feel threatened, which is one of the reasons the park has such strict dog regulations. If you're visiting with a service animal, I'd recommend checking with a ranger about recent wildlife sightings before heading out. That's just my personal opinion--you don't want to put yourself, your dog, or the wildlife in a dangerous situation. One unexpected highlight was spotting a beaver right along the side of the road while driving through the park! We completed three easy trails: * Coyote Valley Trail - About 1 mile round trip, completely flat with little to no elevation gain. Limited parking. * Holzwarth Historic Site - Around 1 mile round trip with very little incline. The trail leads to several historic cabins and buildings. Decent-sized parking lot. * Colorado River Trailhead - Our favorite of the three. It's also about 1 mile round trip and has the most elevation gain, although I'd still consider it an easy hike. Large parking area. Overall, Rocky Mountain National Park is an incredible place to visit with amazing scenery and wildlife. Just be sure to plan ahead if you're traveling with a dog and understand the pet restrictions before you arrive.

We drove up from our place in Glendale where we were staying. Traffic was light so it took just…read moreover an hour. Our first stop was the Beaver meadows Visitor Center. The Rangers gave us a map and a wealth of information about what to see. The Park has a new system where you have to get a special visitor pass to enter the park before 2:00 pm. After that you can enter with a regular pass. It was shortly before 2:00 so we dove out to the entrance. We showed our Senior Pass and Driver ID and we were off. We had 4 hours to see everything we wanted to see. Since we saw most areas when were were here last time we wanted to go out to the Alpine Visitor Center and enjoy the 12,000 ft elevation. We were surprised to see very little snow on the mountains compared to our last visit. I heard someone say there was a very dry winter here with small amounts of snow. This is one of the most beautiful of all the National Parks we've visited and one of the oldest. It is a must visit if you are in the area.
