Best. Bike rental. Ever. What a great location and friendly, helpful staff. Reasonable rates that go down the longer you plan to ride. They provided us some different path choices, but recommended the river road last weekend since the lake path hasn't been cleared of all of the snow yet. Our group of four left the Resort at Squaw Creek, brunched in Tahoe City, rode around town and up and down hills for miles until we came to the lake, then rode back to the river, checked out fish, checked out of sun burns (despite all the snow around us, it was very warm weather), and then we returned our bikes and drove back to our home away from home. It was literally one of the nicest days ever, with lots of recognition going to the guys at Willard's. They sell lots of ski clothing/gear in here too (and summer gear) but winter stuff is on sale right now! read more

We rode to the Squaw Valley Olympic Village, had a nice lunch and tootled our way back along the beautiful Truckee River. I was in need of skis and went to every single store in Tahoe City and glad I waited until I got to Willard's. The sales representative was VERY helpful & nice, and really wanted to make sure I found the right pair of skis without feeling like she wanted to make a sale. She went through each ski boot with me and took the time to ask about various specifications that needed to be right to make a perfect ski boot. She also gave me some great ski tips for beginners that I never knew about. The skis I purchased were the best rate compared to all the other stores and the customer service was impeccable. My group of friends got the SnowBomb deal and decided to choose this place because it was closest to the mountain we wanted. This place had the worst customer service I have ever seen! They take 400$ out of your account for a hold! The guy behind the counter with long messy hair was SO RUDE. When we were trying on sizes, he acted like we were bothering him! They also had a very poor selection of sizes. They only had one pair of 7.5 and one pair of 8.5 boots! Unfortunately, I had to give my friend the smaller one! The next size up for women's shoes was a 10! What is that! My group boarded all day and came in at 5:15 to return our gear, and the rude long messy haired man was SO RUUUUUDE AGAIN. I heard him saying "they rented and came back at 5:30?!" all rude like! the nice bearded man told him it was okay because they stayed until 6PM for closing anyway! SO RUUUDE. When I got home from the trip, I checked my account to see that they had charged me a dollar. I didn't really care for the dollar, but I was curious to know what it was for! Like if I had damaged something, I wanted to know! So I just called and asked, and the woman that RUDELY picked up the phone told me that it was because they had to take the 400$ charge off my card so they had to charge me one dollar because I used a debit card....except I didn't even use a debit card, I used a credit -__-" If she wasn't so rude, I would have let it slide, but I felt very disrespected by her tone so I asked for the refund back on my card. She was even more rude. She was like "You want a dollar....? JUST ONE dollar?" And I told her yes, because I thought it wasn't fair that they would charge me for something they needed to do! It wasn't even necessary for them to take 400$ off my card! other places I have rented with have just put my card on record just in case something happened! Then she kept asking "are you sure it wasnt 1 cent? because that's what we normally do." No lady, I know how to read one dollar, and one cent! She said she would mail me a dollar, but I find that highly unlikely. I won't hold my breath for that dollar. Overall, all these workers except for the bearded beanie man are extremely rude and unfriendly. Normal places would have let us know if they were going to take $1 off our accounts. I really would not have such a problem if these workers weren't so rude and disrespectful. I WILL NEVER RETURN. I just called back to explain that I was so upset! Apparently I was arguing with the owner of the store...which makes things even worse because the owner should not feel so entitled! The lady I spoke with said she was the manager, and she was very nice. She explained to me that they actually do not make any money from the SnowBomb deal which is quite unfortunate. But it also explains the rude attitudes that come from the workers. From what I believe, if the workers were nicer to the customers, people would not even have to buy the snowbomb deal and would just come back to rent from them anyway. But that's just how I feel. Willard's has excellent customer service and provides the most candid advice when it comes to skis and boots, not trying to upsell the customer at all. I rented 2 single kayaks, 2 double kayaks, and 2 SUPs for our wedding in September 2018 and they were so great to work with! I highly recommend them for any of your outdoor needs. They were great in communication via email, very responsive and helpful (especially Kristine) and helped us figure out the best rental set up for our group. Kristine called a few days before our wedding to confirm and was just so sweet! They dropped the equipment off at a specified address right at the set 9 AM time and pick up the next morning for a one day rental. The equipment itself was in good shape, all worked great and came with paddles and life jackets. We loved having this memory in large part thanks to Willard's! read more

I rented two bikes for two hours. I was told that they close at 5:30 PM when I returned at 5:10 PM the store was closed. Knocked on door and no answer. While sitting in car the older lady from the store poked her head out long enough to catch her attention. So we were able to come inside to pay. The younger girl behind the counter charged me for three hours and a overnight fee. So I explained to her that I was told you close at 5:30 PM and I only used the bikes for less than two hours. Oh good catch she said. Then charged me for two hours. The next day may account had both charges. So I drove from Tahoe Donner back to Tahoe city to get the charge reversed. I was refused the reversal of charges by the store Manager. Now I will have to go through my bank to deal with the problem created by the cashier who refused to admit her mistake. read more

I don't really get the hate on this place. A convenient location to rent bikes and other items. You get the price, you pick a bike, ride it, return it, pay for it. The prices are high here but you are in Tahoe. Buy your raft at Wally-world before you go if the price tags are so shocking. I agree with all the negative posts (there are quite a few that express the same type of concerns). Very disrespectful and rude employees/owner. No greeting when you walk in, no smile, nothing. Let me explain..... Had a snowbomb coupon. Called them in advance to see what the snowbomb coupon was good for. They told me it was good for a free boots/snowboard rental. I asked them if there was anything else I needed to know about the deal. The person on the phone said no. I showed them my coupon when I got there today and after looking at the coupon the rude person at the counter told me that they ran out of snowbomb rentals. Ran out of "snowbomb rentals"?! What does that even mean?! The deal didn't say "limited availability". I asked if he could give a discount on the current boards/boots since we drove 3 hours to get there. He said no and the other lady shrugged her shoulders. They didn't even offer to sell us the inventory they did have!!! The least they could have done was offer us a discount or give us a chance to rent the equipment they did have. It doesn't appear customer service is anywhere in their employee handbook. The only thing we were grateful for was they recommended us to Dave's which was a very pleasant experience. Again, avoid this place at all costs!!!! read more

Boyfriend, friend, and I came here for snowboarding rentals because we all had the Snowbomb deal. Because the service was relatively good, I'm kind of sad that I'm giving this place a 2 star review, but there were some details that were just inexcusable, especially because there are so many other rental places around the area. DEPOSIT: First off, $400 PER PERSON is a lot to charge for a mere deposit. Second, the other places I've been to never actually CHARGE money; they just take a credit card imprint, and I assume they only charge the credit card if something goes wrong. Also, the deposit is usually $50; the most I've seen before I came to Willard's was $100. EQUIPMENT: They don't have much of a selection for women. I have big calves but small feet (usually a size 5 or size 6 at the most), so there were no boots that fit me here. The first pair I tried on was good on calves, but about a half size too large for my feet. Second pair was too tight on both calves and feet. The last pair they had in the 5-6 size range was okay on my feet but tight on my calves, but I gave up and just chose that pair. Big mistake - when I got to Homewood and tried walking around with both feet laced in, the boots cut off circulation to my calves and toes so badly and painfully that I had to take them off immediately and return to Willard's for an exchange. Because they only had one pair left, the pair I had tried on first, I spent the rest of my day getting painful blisters on the back of my foot because the boots were way too big. On the other hand, my boyfriend and friend's rentals were super awesome. My friend basically got a BRAND NEW pair of boots (the price tag was still inside, etc.), and my boyfriend said his boots were the comfiest he'd ever tried, and both of their boards looked brand new as well. SERVICE: At first, I thought the employee with the beard/beanie was angry/unhappy but then as he made (what sounded like) cheerful small talk as he helped us out, we realized he might just always have a poker face and just doesn't smile. The lady at the counter was also pretty nice, so customer service was good :) Unfortunately, they didn't service the equipment well; mostly, they didn't check if the boots fit with the bindings, which led to quite a bit of problems on the mountain. My friend's bindings kept sliding around his boots as he was boarding, until he realized that it was because the bindings in the back were set at XL length and fixed it himself. For me, the front binding (near my toes) kept falling off my boot, which was a HUGE problem because anytime I tried toe-stops or any toe-towards-snow movement, the bindings would hit the snow and make me trip. Needless to say, snowboarding was a difficult when I had to adjust bindings every few minutes. Sad day. OVERALL: 1.5 star for the great equipment my boyfriend and friend got and the great customer service we received, but none for the horrible equipment I got, not servicing the equipment correctly, and for the horrible deposit policy. read more

I have been to Willard's on a number of occasions and they never disappoint. I always prefer to shop locally but that doesn't always mean you get what you want/need. Willard's has Everything! Including amazing service and friendly staff. I purchased ski boots not a cheap item and felt the staff (Shane) was knowledgeable and patient. He made sure the fit was right before I left and made sure I knew that I could come back to "tune" them free of charge up to 1 year after purchasing. I also rented demo skis for the week but the weather took a turn for the worse and I brought the skis back early. The owner only charged me for a single days rental!!! I did not at all expect that but it really made my day. I will send all of my friends to Willard's and they are my go to shop whenever I'm in Tahoe. Thank you Willard's!!! read more

We were initially impressed with their customer service. Good selection of bikes. We rented some really nice E-bikes for a good price. Dax gave us some trail riding advice and points of interest locations to visit. Upon returning the bikes my wife enjoyed the great selection of women's clothing deals on the rack. They pulled a sweater off the mannequin because it was the last one in her size. We returned the following day and rented a kayak for the 2 hr minimum rental, unfortunately the weather conditions took a turn for the worse and we returned to the rental shop early. They understood why we came back early and actually refunded us for the portion of time that we didn't use. They didn't have to do that, it just shows good customer service. The final thing I want to add is that they have a food truck that sets up in their parking lot that makes amazing food. I suggest buying some sandwiches and taking them on your adventure to enjoy along the river bank. read more

Looks as though a lot of people that shopped here share the experiences that me and my friends went through. Me and my friends also bought the snowbomb deal and this shop was on the way to the homewood ski resort. This place had very very very poor customer service. The guy at the cash register with the blue LRG jacket didn't even greet us when we came in. The whole time he helped us he was like Mr. Serious like he didn't even want to be there. Can you smile dude? And then he told us that a $400 hold on our cards was required per person in order to rent. I asked him if he was serious, and he gave me a smart remark like, "how much do you think a snowboard costs?" Well for the stuff you're giving me probably not $400 man. I didn't have that much money, so my friend had to cover for me and have the $400 charged on his card thankfully. The guy helping us out with the board rentals wasn't very welcoming either. The only nice guy that had some idea of customer service was the dude with the beanie and beard. When we came back to return the rentals the same LRG jacket guy releases the hold on my friend's debit card. But then my friend notices that he also charged him $1 to release the hold WITHOUT TELLING HIM. Like bro, 1 dollar isn't a big deal, but it's COMMON COURTESY to let the customer know what you're doing, especially if they're unaware of you making any extra charges towards them. And they told us that charging a dollar would release the hold immediately and the money would be there right away. Turns out my friend didn't get his money back until like 2 days later and he was broke for those days which kinda ruined the trip a little bit. The following day we went to the Rainbow Mountain snowboard shop and they only required one hold of $50 for the entire group! Willards needs to reconsider their terms of business if they want to become successful. My experience here was disliked very much. read more

But most important bike quality is very poor. 4 bikes. 1 had a seat issue. 1 had a bent wheel. The tag along (kid extension) was very bad and dangerous. I stopped by Willard's at the recommendation of a friend who works at Squaw Valley to rent some demo skis for myself and get some gear for my 3 year old son and was very impressed with the knowledge and service of the employees and the owner Dax. They were all genuine and incredibly friendly and went out of their way to make sure we were taken care of which made for the most epic weekend of skiing ever. We will definitely be back and can't thank the team at Willard's enough. I highly recommend everyone going to North Lake Tahoe stop by this ski shop. They have everything you need from beginner to expert gear and are super easy to get to. It's directly after the only stop light in Tahoe City on the right. Enjoy! read more
