After my kids and nieces took ski and snowboard lessons at Mt. Rose, we decided to look for a rental place the next day. I called Curtis up and he was upfront and informational on the phone. No appt. needed, just come in. We were smart enough to give ourselves ample of time before my ski lesson to process everything for the rental. This is small mom and pop shop and upon walking in Curtis greeted us. We told him what we needed and he got all the girls sized up. My niece didn't like the color of her boots (oh no I thought) and he happily exchanged them and even let her pick out her own skis. We rented two snowboards, boots, and helmets for the teens and two skis, boots, helmets and gloves for the girls. We got waxed us up and we were on our way. Some observations, It's a small place so if Curtis is with someone else, expect a wait. PLAN AHEAD so you're not short on time. This place gives you a home feel and Curtis is like a family member, he's straight up, forward, open and honest. I really appreciate a casual encounter and conversation. The gear for us was great, no complaints at all. He has excellent rates for decent and good gear. If you're looking for some top of the line fancy gear, make sure you're willing to pay for it. Also, call in advance and let him know what you need and expect, to see if this is the place for you. My experience was excellent. This place is super close to Mt. We have rented touring equipment as well as snowboards here when we have visiting guests. All of our experiences have been positive. The owner and his son are very friendly. They also have reasonably priced hats, gloves, goggles, etc. for sale, should anyone renting, need them. This little place can get pretty crowded if you are there at height renting or returning times, but they get everyone in and out as quickly as possible. Additionally, they do ski/board tune-ups. They are thinking of offering mountain bike rentals for the summer. Since they are at Sky Tavern & it has numerous Mt Bike trails, this would be a great idea. ATTENTION!! this place let you sign a contract mentioning that you cannot complaint about the equipment you rented. Which means whenever you have your stuff you cannot come back if there is any problem. As well even though the contract does not mention that there is "no exchange" you cannot exchange your skis or anything else whenever you go out of the door. (Contract picture attached) The owner is good whenever you are renting the equipment. If you come back for anything but return your equipment, the owner will be very mean, shout at you, and he can kick you out of the store. This review is backed up by several reviews giving 1 star to the store. Yes the renting is cheap. However you get what you pay for. The quality is not as good as other places, equipments are wear, and you are risking your ski day as you are signing on a "no complaints" policy. I discovered Mountain Top Sports in 2017 after the sting of rental prices at Mt. Rose. A local skier I met recommended M T S and Curtis saying he had the best prices and was the most knowledgeable person when it comes to equipment as well as those adjustments - Curtis almost knows what sizes and skill you have the moment you enter the shop! On my first visit, I was very impressed ! Curtis asked a me a couple of questions and had me on my way in less than 15 minutes!!! I've rented from Curtis a dozen or more times since that first visit and I truly enjoy and appreciate the personable vibe he gives off. I live in SoCal and make 4-5 trips up each season . So renting is much easier in my situation and its easier to fly without the gear. Hands down, Curtis has the best prices and is super convenient just a couple miles before the resort. Last December there had been a storm overnight and I didn't think we could make it up the mountain to ski- it was our last day. I called Curtis in a panic about just getting the equipment returned due to chain restrictions in place a few miles up from the interstate. Curtis calmly said, he could meet me on his way down after he closed for the day and not to worry. I was beyond amazed and grateful. A few hours later the chain restrictions were lifted and I was able to drive up, ski for a couple hours and return the equipment after all. However, I was so appreciative that Curtis was happily able to help me out and this has stuck with me ever since , Im a year late writing this review but Curtis deserves to be recognized as a great business owner with a great business . Today I went to Mt. Rose and just needed to rent boots and bindings. Their shop was closed, so they sent me to Mountain Top Sports. When I pulled up, they were closed, but I called if anyone was inside to see if they could just help a guy out. It was pouring snow today, my three friends were already up on the mountain, and I just needed a pair it boots and bindings... They picked up, and I told them my story, and they proceeded to start to rent me a snowboard package, since it would be easier than unscrewing bindings... totally understandable. As I started to fill out the paperwork, a lady came down from upstairs and starting yelling, "No! No! No!" I looked at her and asked if she was saying no to renting out a board, and she said, "WE ARE CLOSED!" I told her that I understood that, but that I was already there, and just looking for someone to help, since I was already at the top of mount rose and it was pouring snow, and the next rental place is nearly 20 minutes away in that condition. Anyway, she refused to rent me a board, even when I asked to pay $100 on top of the rental, just so I could join my friends and not have to drive further down the hill as it dumped. No rental. I just don't think this is a good way to treat people. I don't understand the hesitation... she said she was worried about me suing her if I got hurt even though I was filling out the rental/waiver agreement, but because the place was "closed"... she couldn't do it. Super rude. Super unhelpful in kind of a desperate situation. Just a bad example of human decency. Don't go here. They don't deserve anyone's money. read more

It's our third time here. Super convenient location. Only about 5 mins from Mt. Rose Resort. Their gears are much more updated than Sports Basement but their price is about the same. Of cause their price is way cheaper than Mt. Rose rental shop. The staffs are always friendly and helpful. Also the owner knows a lot about the mountain and the weather. Last time we wanted to rent for two days. The owner suggested us only rent for one day because it would be too windy the next day and it would not be worth it. So we only rented for one day instead. And he was right. It was snowing crazy and so windy the next day. We are so impressed with his honest and knowledge. This time we rented for three days but he allowed us to do an early return and only charge for the days we used, which is really nice of him. He actually went out of his way to push as much snow beside and under my car as he could using his truck-mounted plow. He then shouted a bunch of profanities at me for parking near his shop. Doesn't seem like a business worth supporting, or a good environment for kids. I'd recommend the other rental shops closer to town over this place. read more

This place is awesome. Have no complaints. Open on Christmas Day. My friend and I with our kids got there and we had no problems getting skis, boots and poles. The owner was very good and very selective on choosing the skis based on our skill set and even waxed the bottom of the skis which you don't get anywhere else. Have no complaints. I would recommend this place. Great that it is close to Mount Rose and cheaper and better equipment and faster to process than the ski resort. I'm not sure I believe any of the other reviews that are 1 Star (the guy with the broken board is not part of this assessment). My only conclusion was it might have been someone who thought they could get away with something for free since you have those type of people. read more

Easy access off the 431 Cons: Really small and cramped, if the line is long you have to stand outside One entrance/exit, bathroom is located in the back of the store. No ski insurance clause Charges a fee if boots are returned wet Bad customer service Owner doesn't know his stores products** **I have a story to tell about this. I came with my family to rent four pairs of skis poles and boots for two days after Mount Rose rentals ran out during holiday season. 1. Waited an hour outdoors only to be seated and the girl working didn't help us to fit the boots, instead began to help another party and forgot us and promptly left us waiting until they finished. 2. Three of us asked for shorter poles but the man who got them from the back room forgot to mark it on the rental sheets. Two of them were fine but for me he brought out weird, obscure brand poles wrapped in a rubber band. On the slopes i realized they weren't even the same size! 3. Next day upon returning, the owner promptly charged me for the poles, denying carrying anything besides "Scotts Poles", and accused me of letting his poles get switched or stolen on the slopes. Called back to clear the situation and was impertinent on the phone and wouldn't even consider asking the man who helped me. He did say however that other people have called and complained about the same thing. Clearly, he doesn't know what is going on back there and seems to be trying to clear his unwanted random old inventory by renting them out then charging people for it. RED FLAG! My advice: stay away. Rent from hotels, rent from resorts, rent from other small shops, rent from home before going up to the snow but DO NOT rent here unless you absolutely have to and even then be very mindful of the products they give you. read more

I've been going to Reno since I was about 7 years old and we've always gone to Mt. Rose except once we went to North Star to try it out. This place is on the way to Mt. Rose which is SUPER convenient since the rental line at Mt. Rose is ridiculous. Also, these rentals are pretty good and it goes fast if there's not many people in the shop. Besides rentals, they also sell hats, gloves, coats, pants, goggles, etc. My brother got a pair of goggles here for $40 but he said that they were really useful. My sister and I got skis here for $20 each so that was a pretty good deal! When you walk in the door and you tell them what you want to rent, they immediately have clipboards ready and then you tell them what shoe size you are and while you fill out the clipboard, they get you your shoes so you can try them on quickly. Also, when you return these rentals, it's a breeze because all they do is charge you and you return them(hopefully in the same condition you found them) and then you can leave! This quick, convenient service was VERY helpful, especially since there was a TON of traffic on the way home so we got home earlier than most people. This store is pretty small but there's 2 tables, a bathroom, and free wifi! I love how they had free wifi because none of the hotels gave free wifi so you had to go to mcdonald's or pay $10-$20 a night for wifi at the hotel you were staying at. Overall, this place has great, friendly, quick service and is certainly going to be my go-to place for rentals for the rest of my life! read more

Don't bother. Get you gear in Reno or Incline. These people don't deserve customers. On Christmas my friend locked keys in car on sledding outing with the kids. It was below freezing out and this shop refused to let her wait inside because her one year old baby was getting dangerously cold waiting for locksmith. Rented from here twice with my girlfriend: first time was snowshoes a few weeks ago, second time was 07DEC2017, along with my gf's aunt. We all had a great experience with the owner. I think some of the older reviews may have gotten his attention to be more personable and patient, and I had no problems at all. He was patient and enthusiastic about helping us, and I also observed as he helped others. Maybe understaffed, so your experience might vary on the weekend depending on the crowd. As far as price is concerned, I paid $35 for a snowboard, boots, helmet, and a jacket since I forgot mine that day. That's a steal, if you ask me. If you are heading to Mt. Rose and need ski and snowboard rentals, this is pretty much the only game in town BESIDES getting a rental at the mountain. Convenient if you are coming from Reno. Only a few miles from the parking lot. I rented just a board and bindings since I had my own boots. $20. For comparison, it was $25 at the mountain. I didn't have to stand in line, but I also happened to get there right at opening. However, if you are looking for new, hi-end rentals, I wouldn't recommend this place. It was just sort of a mess of older boards and bindings, a little beat up. Mt. Rose offered fairly new burton boards and bindings. Bottom line. Cheap, convenient but older, random boards. Can't speak to the ski inventory. read more

My son and I have rented ski equipment on 3 occasions over the last 2 year (skis and poles) and in all cases the equipment was in good shape and every effort was made to make sure the ski boots (for my son) fit well and were comfortable. On 4/10/2018 my own ski boots broke and Curtis looked them over and decided that they could not be repaired ... I ended up buying a used (and very comfortable) pair of used ski boots at a great price. Curtis and his store are the only place that I will rent ski gear from plus it is so convenient to Mt. We were on our way to Mt Rose to ski and one of the members in our group needed to rent skis. Luckily we say this place along the way since we heard later Mt. Rose rents skis for $49 and this place rented them for $20...big difference! There were 2 people ahead of us when we got there but they were served quickly and so were we. The guy (forgot to get his name) was very direct but super friendly. He took his time finding the right boots for her since her calves are kinda big and most boots don't fit her right. He waxed the rental skis right before he handed them to us and then we jokingly asked him to was our other skis in the car. He surprisingly said yes and we brought them in for a free wax. That was an awesome touch! I don't usually give 5 stars but he went out of his way to find the right fitting boots and also gave our skis free wax without any hesitation.
