Whenever I come to NY, I always, always, always hit William Greenberg Desserts to bring my clients the absolute best baked goods in town and hands down THE BEST BLACK & WHITE COOKIES ON THE PLANET. This trip's haul did not disappoint. I tried the raspberry hamentashen and both a taste of the large as well as the small B&W cookies as well as the rugelach (oink oink). The hamentashen was perfect, buttery triangular cookie with a delicious, fresh raspberry filling in the center. Sometimes hamentashen can be dry with a tasteless cookie, but that ain't the case here. Wonderful. The rugelach was also perfect with its rich, flaky oh so creamy cream cheese dough (I looked that up because I was having a hard time placing it...I tasted the cream cheese but how the heck do they make it so deliciously pronounced here with the other flavor options like chocolate, raspberry, apple and cinammon??). I was always worried (why??) that the small version B&W cookies' flavors woild be muted but that is not the case at all. Both the small and large Black & WHITE cookies were moist and cake-like with beautuful white and chocolate icing. I bet people have a preference between the two...the white icing is delicious but the chocolate is awesome. I have had some B&W cookies before and the black frosting is just the white icing died black. Boooooo! Located on the Upper East Side on Madison Avenue (and the it's not just a bakery it's NY history. Started in 1946 when, Mr. Greenberg returned from World War II. He wanted to open his "dream bakery." Sometimes, dreams really do come true. Known for their iconic black & white cookies which, are my all time favorite. I've loved black my cookies since I was a child. These are rated #1 in my book! The cake part of the cookie is moist and really flavorful. The ratio of black and white frosting is perfect. It's hard for me to walk out with just black & white cookies. I love their rainbow cookies. These are so much better the rainbow cookies found in many other bakeries. The regular brownies and cream cheese brownies, make my mouth water. We came here with my in-laws as part of their NYC tour. My wife had been trying to get here ever since seeing it on Instagram and we used the special trip as an excuse. William Greenberg employees were not very cheerful and happy. They open 8am and I arrived around 8:30am. Someone already purchased the TWO Bran Muffins. I asked if I ordered them could they deliver. I was told based on my address they would charge $25! I was so flabbergasted by this I didn't ask if I could order and pick them up at this location! I left disappointed again after just visiting here last week to leave empty handed. I'm going to contact their customer service department to find out what the charge would be if I ordered a half dozen bran muffins without raisins and picked them up at this location. Black and White heaven in this tight shop on the Upper East Side! I waited until the following day to eat my B&W, so it wasn't fresh out of the oven. It was still excellent! The chocolate (black) side and vanilla (white) side were equally tremendous. Neither side was too rich nor too mellow. The cake part of the cookie was soft (but not too soft) and perfectly round. I have been going to this bakery for 50 years. In the past two years everything seems to have deteriorated. The service is miserable, the staff unhappy. The rugelach, which were wonderful, Have grown to an enormous size and taste like they have been frozen. I had cupcakes delivered that were smashed and had trouble speaking to a manager to explain the situation. It seems that no one is in charge. Sadly, this fixture of the UES has deteriorated to the point that they are losing business. read more

When you walk in you get in line, but it sort of falls apart if you want to walk down the case to look what they have: I made the mistake of wanting to look at the whole case before I ordered and "lost" my attendant and basically had to re-wait in line. What worked: -- lots of dessert variety -- line wasn't too long -- the cake part of the whoopie pie was moist but still had good structure, it didn't fall apart when I took a bite What didn't work: -- the red velvet whoopie pie didn't have much of a cream cheese flavour. Just sugary with no tartness or savouriness to balance it out -- no prices listed so you have to ask the price for each item. Not a terrible thing but it's definitely not ideal -- no seating available. Love William Greenberg Desserts. The double chocolate cake is outstanding and I order it every year for my birthday as a special treat. Their butter cookies are the best I've ever had. So are the Linzer Tarts and of course, the brownies and pies. As far as Im concerned, there is nothing this bakery makes that isn't 100% delicious. They also used to make special made-to-order "candy" cakes for special occasions, and my family has been ordering these since the 1970's. Not sure if these are still being offered. I used to have these a couple of times a month The jam is different as is the cookie itself, which is more shortbread-y as opposed to it's old crumbly texture. The associates are very pleasant and helpful when making a selection. I usually get the sprinkle cookie, that delivers a nice amount of sugary sweetness and a hint of coconut. Their famed black and white cookie was "okay". A little too sweet for me. It reminds me of a really sweet vanilla cake, with thick, super sweet, sheet frosting.
