Where to begin about how great our experience was with Markela and Dulce Cakes. Planning a wedding during Covid provided enough curve balls and challenges to make anyone crazy, but Markela not only rose to each challenge, but surpassed our expectations. She delivered a product that looked amazing and tasted even better - our guests universally commented how the cake was the best tasting wedding cake they've ever eaten. As we were designing the cake, Markela suggested we include the same flowers used throughout the venue. She even offered to arrange to pick up the flowers herself the day before our wedding. We provided the contact for our florist and they communicated directly to make it a reality. On the curve balls front, we learned long after setting the date of our wedding that the NYC bike tour was going to be the same day, with street closures cutting our venue off from the rest of the city. Markela assured us this was no challenge and she'd just make sure the cake arrived prior to the roads being closed. She coordinated directly with our venue to ensure everything would be perfect without us having to lift a finger. Then the week prior to the wedding a tropical storm began forming, which turned into Hurricane Henri. The night before our wedding and wedding day were at the time the rainiest 24 hours in the history of NYC. Even this didn't phase Markela and the cake was perfect! Bottom line, if you're looking for someone to make the best tasting, best looking cake you've ever experienced, all while making it so you never have to lift a finger in the process (except to taste the samples, yum), look no further than Markela and Dulce Cakes!! I'll start off by saying the owner is very enthusiastic and excited to help. My experience with her prior to receiving my daughters first birthday cake was amazing she was very hands on, helpful and always communicating with me to make sure we had the perfect cake. Now here was our understanding of the order for my daughters first birthday which was crayon theme. A crayon shaped cake with pink fondant. The cake was a confetti cake. ( which means sprinkles in the actual cake batter ) and dulce de leche filling. When the cake arrived: The fondant had a lot of bumps and crack in it. That were very visible because it was on the top portion of the cake. (However it did look like a crayon and it was cute if you looked past the imperfections) When we cut into the cake, it was just regular vanilla cake and there was sprinkles in the dulce de leche filling which isn't what I asked for. Nonetheless, despite those cons which were kind of a lot for a $300. Cake. The cake did taste good. The sprinkles in the filling bothered me looked stupid. And wasn't what I had agreed on. However everyone loved the cake because it looked like a crayon lol and the dulce de leche was tasty. Just wish the execution was a little better for the price. Moving forward I think I'm staying away from fondant for ever. It's hard, and not tasty at all. But besides that she was okay. She delivered a somewhat version of what I wanted. And at least the cake tasted good. Thank god I bought my daughter two cakes lol thanks to Veniero's bakery for the back up. Only thing is Veniero's doesn't do custom cakes but they are delicious like absolutely freaking delicious. Skeptical at first because I never tried her cake nor did I know who she was. I went with my gut feeling and messaged her she was always so prompt at replying back and always answering my questions. We ordered a buttercream icing cake....which is very clear on the invoice we got. The cake was delivered and was covered in fondant. I don't eat fondant, ew, not sure who really does. So I had my husband email her and she was defensive and said that's what the picture of the cake looked like it had. Sorry, but this picture looks exactly like our wedding cake and our wedding cake had buttercream frosting. The invoice said buttercream and nothing about fondant. Her emails just kept talking about the picture and she eventually just stopped responding and never tried to make it right. Oh, she did suggest just taking off the fondant and eat the inside of the cake, because yes, I did just pay $150 to pick apart something to find something that may or may not taste good. I lucked out on this custom bakery. I am from out of state, but recently threw my sister a baby shower in the city. Markela communicated with me every step of the process to make a few dozen custom cupcakes that were exactly what my sister and I wanted.
